Questions about pilates

Cathlete
I have recently decided to incorporate pilates into my routine. I was wondering if anyone does it? If so, how often, for how long, and any recommendations for good ones out there?

TIA!:)

i do mari winsor pilates. the advanced total body is about 90 min and i just do it when i don't feel like doing anything else

jes:)

Hi Tia.

I am not doing any Pilates exercises right now b/c pregnancy has made alot of the exercise difficult/uncomfortable, etc.

When I was doing them faithfully tho, I did it 3 to 5 times per week. I have mari winsor's infomercial set. I did either the 20 min work out in addition to a regular work out or I did the accelerated body sculpting (1 hour)which I would do by itself.

I have heard that if you are REALLY into Pilates that Romana's pilates is the best out there...but for me, Winsor worked great. I noticed a big difference in my flexibility and in the shape of my muscles (they elongated) after doing the work outs several times and my ab strength was definately improving as well.

If you are looking for ALL of the benefits that pilates has to offer, it is reccomended that you practice it a minimum of 3 days per week-according to mari winsor anyway. If you just want to use it on a light day or just as a form of stretching, then use it as often or as little as you wish.

Hope this helped!:)

Take care.

I do Winsor pilates too. Once a week (on my "rest" day). I don't really like her, though. She's pretty annoying.

I'm so sorry Melissa!! I looked for a name real quick in your post and the first thing I saw was Tia so that's what I wrote! DUH! lol Sorry about that one. :+

Donna,
LOL at the annoying comment. You know who annoys me? Kathy Smith. I have one of her videos and I like the exercises but I can't take the "YEEEEEHAAAAWWWW" yelling and such. I prefer Cathe and Tamilee Webb because they just tell it like it is and don't have to make noises (well, besides the grunting from the weights).

Did Kathy Smith do one of The Firm workouts? I popped in my 5 Day Abs a couple months ago and all of those instructors just made me want to pull my eyes out! I can't believe I used to like them!

My Dad and I were laughing about Mari the other day. He does her workout too and hates the way she says "squeeze your tushie". He's a 64 year old man, and not a bit feminine, so that really makes him feel dumb doing the workout.

I used to take a small (limited to 6) Pilates class 2/wk. We did mostly mat Pilates, but also used the reformer and the cadillac (which struck me deep with fear when I first saw it... it looks like a torture device!). I cannot communicate to you how much it changed my physique.

Things change! The gym was taken over by another company, and the instructors moved. x( Now I'm left to try to find a substitute. I've taken a few classes here and there, but it's hard to find something that compares! ;( So I got some of the Stott Pilates DVDs, because I heard good things about them. I think the basic principles are pretty good, but Moira (the instructor) sends me over the edge. Not exactly something you want when you need to be focusing on your body. Her high-pitched runsallthewordstogetherduringanexercisetoIthinkhelpyouholdaposition - and then the "release" of her voice back into something dogs don't bark at, truly bugs.

All I can say is that Stott seems to have some nicely structured workouts with a variety of levels and equipment usage... so if you can stand Moira, then it might be worth checking out.

Hi Melissa!!

I do pilates every other day on the days I do cardio. I don't like Winsor Pilates either. I can't tolerate Mari Winsor at all. The ones I really like the most are:

*Mind Body and Mat Intermediate w/Hilary Burnett
*MTV Pilates w/Kristen Mcgee
*Quick Fix Pilates Abs w/Keli Roberts

HTH
Aila:)

Thanks everyone for your responses. I think I am going to look for some shorter pilates workouts to include with the one that I already have (Winsor's Max Burn SS). I am new to pilates so I think I may have picked one that is a little too advanced for me, but I modify when needed. I think I have been spoiled by Cathe; I do not like workouts that have a lot of instruction in them because that becomes annoying when doing them over and over again! I don't like to be taught everytime I do the workout, LOL. I got a Living Arts one that was inexpensive that shows a lot of modifications but the sequencing of the movements does not seem to work me like the Winsor one does. Oh well. More reason to shop (like I really need an excuse!)

Thanks again!:)

I like pilates for everybody w/ Denise Austin, i also have 2 more of her pilates videos. I know a lot of people don't like her:-( Crunch burn and firm and fat blasting pilates are good too. Those 2 i would say were more excercise than stretching though but i really love the instructor.

I am also interested in incorporating some Pilates into my routines. Gaiam's Ana Caban vids were recommended to me on another board. I just purchased 4 of her VHS in a closeout at gaiam.com for $12.99 total plus shipping, and it included a Pilates book! I believe titles included; beginning pilates, intermediate, for weightloss & PM (a guess a low key version?).

Anyway can't give you my review yet, but thought it might be a good site to try some vids w/out a big investment.

Good luck,
Kim
