Question For Plantar Fasciitis Sufferers

For those of you who suffer from Plantar Fasciitis, do you think it would be okay to continue with spinning classes while I try to get this latest flair up under control? I've an appointment scheduled with a foot doctor to discuss my options, but it's not for a few weeks, so I'm hoping in the meanwhile, you experts might know.

I figure I can still lift weights, do Pilates and ride a stationary bike (and hopefully go to spinning). What about using an elliptical machine? The impact is low, but since I would be standing, I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not. The last time (which was really the first time) I had an "episode", I gave up everything but weights and Pilates. I'm hoping not to have to do that this time.

Any ideas on non-impact workouts you might have (other than swimming, which isn't an option right now) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Shelbygirl

Spinning and ellipticals are great for when your PF flairs up. I have done it. Just make sure you still wear your good athletic shoes. I also tape my foot and have inserts (cheap ones--Dr Scholls)

I just had PF a couple mos ago. The podiatrist told me that biking, ellipticals, and swimming were just fine! I was even able to continue running, but had to get orthotics for my shoes. Weights & Pilates are great also! Another thing that will help is ibuprofen since it is an anti-inflammitory (although I was on Naproxen- the podiatrist prescribed it). But you need to be regular about taking it at least a couple weeks.

A couple other things that help is to roll a ball under your feet & on your arches (I use my dd's super bouncy ball or you could use a tennis ball) while you're sitting down. I keep it by the computer chair to roll while I'm sitting here. Do NOT go barefoot or wear flip flops, make sure to wear supportive shoes at all times! And stretch your calves & hamstrings really well too, I try to stretch out even before I get out of bed which seems to help too. (if it's like mine was it hurt like crazy to step out of bed in the morning!)

HTH some & it gets better for you! Mine only took a few weeks to heal up which I'm glad for because I was starting to hobble around like an old woman!!

Hugs,

Just to add re: the rolling of a ball, you can also roll a can of cold pop, the coldness helps with inflammation.

Thanks so much for the advice, Jess and Lala. I'm glad to hear the elliptical and bike are still good options. Coincidentally, I just purchased a bunch of those Cardio Coach CDs, so that should keep me amused while I heel (no pun intended there!). I'll have to do much better with the stretching though, from the sounds of it.

Thanks again,
Shelbygirl

Shelby Girl-
Spinning will be great because you can get the cardio you crave without the pain. In 1999 I had PF on my left foot and DH bought me a bike for home. It was very helpful. Last year I had PF on my right foot. It was harder to get rid of this time but, I found doing the prescribed stretches 5 to ten times per day really helped. It sounds obsessive, but it it works.

After 7 years of wearing custonm orthotics, I switched to an over the counter type that works for me. They are called Power Step. A reader on this forum recommended them to me. I bought them on line and highly recommend them. Check them out:

My dr. suggested only non-impact cardio, bike was ok. Elliptical sets my PF off as does the stairmaster.
