Question.. about working shoulders with both weights & kickboxing type

workouts. I am having a lot of trouble defining my shoulders and I am beginning to wonder if I am overworking them with both weight work for them and since you say that holding a fighting stance with arms up works your shoulders if both is overdoing it and thus making definition a problem?

I really want definition but as with any muscle if you work it all the time you break it down and it won't develop definition (unless I am completely off my rocker in my understanding).

I only do kickboxing type of workouts since I can't do Step anymore and I use weighted gloves during my workouts and I do weights on alternating days before cardio if it is a weight day.

Thanks for reading and any help is always appreciated.:D

Hi Annette!

You do work your shoulders when you hold your arms up on guard but you are working muscular endurance not strength. If you do not provide resistance to a muscle it can not build strength. As for the times you use weighted gloves for your workouts, this is generally a light weight of one to 3 pounds and this weight never really increases due to the nature of the workout. So in this case, muscular strength is initially built but as the muscles get stronger and adapt and no further adaptive changes are presented, the strength gains level off and muscle endurance once again becomes the primary benefit. Side note: I do not suggest using anything heavier than 3 pounds (in fact 1 to 2 pounds is plenty) in most fast paced kickbox programs as to not overstress your shoulder joint.

That being said, if you feel your shoulders are fatigued on a given weight training day, avoid doing shoulders on that day so they have more recovery time.

Good Luck!
