question about the walmart barbell set.

Is this set also rubber coated as the troy lite set is?
Just wondering which is the better "deal". I have a regular barbell that is metal and I can't use it behind my neck for squats, it just hurts.
I'd like a new one I guess, but I feel badly I just got the other one recently. :-(

Hi,

The troy set is higher quality and the weights are metal covered with rubber. The Walmart weight set uses vinyl weights with concrete inside. I think you will be pleased with either product, but for only $19.99 you can’t go wrong with the Walmart set.

It is rubber coated like troy lite. A friend of mine got it for her sons & she is very happy with it. One thing to keep in mind is that those bards are metal but hollow.

Instead of getting a new bar, roll a hand towel around your bar for padding.

I have the Walmart barbell and I like it a lot. I have had it for a little over a year now and have never had any problems with it.

Don't forget that you can buy a cushioned tube to put around your barbell to help with the discomfort. Also, there is a piece of equipment called a "manta ray" I think, that is shaped just like its namesake, and also helps prevent the discomfort of holding a barbell on your neck.

Hope the link works!

I do a lot of DIY projects around the house and was thinking that pipe insulation might work nicely to cushion the bar. Has anyone tried this? I seem to remember that I've used two types of pipe insulation: a rubbery kind and a foamy kind (I know - I'm not good with technical terms), but maybe the rubbery would work. Just a thought...

Yes, the soft black pipe insulation would work, but you can only get the kind that would fit around your barbell in really long lengths - like 6 ft at a time. And then you only need about 12-15 inches of it.

Unless of course, you have pipes that need wrapping in your house.;)

For only a few dollars you can get a proper one at the sports store, usually with a velcro closure and mine has "suede" on the outside for comfort.

Well what's so scary about my house is that we always have those kinds of odds and ends already on hand!
