Question about Power Hour

I'm considering buying Power Hour, which would be my first Cathe tape. I was just wondering if it requires a step platform for any of the sections (like perhaps lunges or upper body). Just so I know if I have everything I need, should I decide to order. Thanks! :)

Hi!

I think I can help you out. Yes, a bench (or step platform) is used in Power Hour. She uses this for the chest and tricep sections. I use my step platform and my husband made me a 4" wooden platform to put underneath it to make it a little higher. You'll also need an adjustable barbell and dumbells.

Good luck with Power Hour...it's one butt-kicking workout!

Yes, yes, Joan, come over to the dark side...be at one with Cathe and her other converts...}>

There are a number of lying exercises, such as barbell chest presses, lying tricep extensions. Do you have a weight bench you could use, if you don't have a step? I used to use a piano bench many years ago...

In any case I imagine you can adapt to just using the floor as you would do for Firm tapes, you have to go light anyway.

If I were to compare this to any Firm tape in terms of intensity, I guess I'd liken it to Super Sculpting, if they put the segments together so you only did one body part at a time. You know those pulsing leg presses Nancy Tucker does that seems to go on forever...that is the general "feel" of Power Hour - for your entire body.

Do it! do it! do it!

Well, that is good news, since Super Sculpting is my favorite Firm tape. It's just getting way too easy though, even with heavy weights.

It's looking like I'm being converted....

You aren't going to reveal to me that you are actually my father now are you, Sophie Vader!! LOL

Hey Nancy

JMO, but I like Firm Bootcamp much better than Super Sculpt. It's my favorite Firm tape and, if you do the whole tape, it is a great workout!!

If you love to Firm you'll love Power Hour

I love Power Hour partly because it is the first Cathe I've done that reminds me of a Firm workout. Power Hour moves from one bodypart to the next in a methodical way-unlike Firms. And while I love that variety and constant change in Firm workouts I am really enjoying the way Cathe put this tape together. She gives you just enough time to change your weights and she doesn't blather on wasting time. I think you will love it if you love Firms. She also gets a fantastic burn going in each muscle group and you don't have to come back to it again!

RE: If you love to Firm you'll love Power Hour

Eek. I watched the little video clip here on the website and there is just one thing that worries me. The music. Is the music like that throughout the entire video. By "like that" I mean, heavy thumping beat techno music? Problem is, (and I'm totally sincere here) that music like that is a migraine trigger for me, so if the tape has it, I'm probably going to have to take a pass. Short sections of it I can handle, but more than about 5 minutes at a time and I begin to get sick. I'm absolutely not kidding. This is why I can't go to dance clubs.

I'm an experienced lifter, so is it possible that, if the music is this way that I can follow Cathe without the volume turned up? What do you think?

RE: If you love to Firm you'll love Power Hour

Hmmm..yeah the music is like that on the whole video. It's part of why I like it so much. Some of the songs really keep you going because of that pulsing beat. So I don't know how much fun it would be with the volume turned down. She does switch the counts around a lot as well. It's not a workout that I'm finding easy to remember, I need to listen to her cueing.

Crumb! You may be better off just passing on this one Joan.

Fancy meeting you here. I wrote a review of Power Hour which should be in VF's New Reviews. Regarding the music...it's pretty much the same throughout the video.

Step and Music

Hi Joan. I just wanted to add that I don't have a step and do the chest/tricep work on the floor and don't have a problem with that at all. I don't think either section has you working on an incline, so you don't need to worry about missing out on that part if you're doing it flat on the ground.

As for the music, yes it is that techno music throughout. However, I was surprised at how QUIET the music seemed throughout the tape -- Don't know it that would make a difference in terms of your migraines.

Power Hour Rocks!

I really mean that too! I like the music, but most of all I like the all weight format -- even the warmup is weighted!

I feel as though the Slow and Heavy and Power Hour are breaking another plateau for me! Move over, Firm, you've lost your edge -- I never thought I'd say that, but Super Sculpt and Boot Camp were just too, too easy for me. Cathe has taken weight training to new heights!

And as for Rhythmic Step -- I love, love, love it.
Love the music, love the choreography, love the cast......just love it! Of course, I love dancy choreography!

RE: If you love to Firm you'll love Power Hour

Bummer, Joan! The music is pretty much like that the entire time, as far as I can tell. It's not as loud as the talking though.

IMO you DO need to hear Cathe's cues. She changes the rep style frequently through the set - you know, three up one down, two up one down, etc. so unless you're quick to figure it out visually, you'll be out of synch with everyone.

Maybe you need a loaner to see if it'll work for you?
