Q about Jari Love

I don't mind her personality, but the thing that gets to me is her constant talk of calories. Every five seconds, she's going into the stats on how many calories we're burning. I don't know, that kind of mentality just isn't motivating for me. I'd rather hear about how strong I'm getting or how much muscle I'm building. Some of her workouts she doesn't do this as much, but I found it really annoying on To The Core and 1000.

yeah she does talk about calories quite a bit, doesn't she!

And carbs. I get really tired of hearing about the carbs already. I burn carbs sitting here typing. ;) We all do.

That drives me nuts too. The way she says "carbs and calories", as if a calorie is a physical structure or a carb is energy. I know what she's getting at, but I guess I'm just nitpicky.

It's misleading as well. How could she possibly have studied and isolated the amount of carbohydrates someone burned doing biceps curls??? Does such technology actually exist??? I can understand calorie expendure. We can all estimate that at home with a decent heart rate monitor. But carbs??? Can that really be done??? It is simply a math formula that first assumes total calories burned or something??? At one point (I can't remember which workout this is in) she says something to the effect that when they tested this exercise, 100% carbs were burned. How would they know that???

I always take that as what Coach Sean is always referring to. We are burning our glycogen stores. I'm pretty sure glycogen stores come from carbs. After we deplete the glycogen stores, our body begins to dip into the fat stores.
I could have it ALL wrong, but that is what my take is on it.

That makes sense, and that's what I've always heard too. So really when Jari is saying this exercise burned 100% carbs, it's what anything intense but short-lived is supposed to do, right? It's not really the big deal or amazing thing she makes it sound like it is. I guess I'm just being nitpicky, but it's the way she says it ... like it's brand new science or something, that just irks me. I love her workouts. I just need to turn the sound off to do them. ;)

I tune her comments out. Truth is, her body type does not inspire me. She doesn't irritate me though. She has a calm presence about her. I like her workout routines for summer, as a calorie burner. I find her background exerciser's motivating.

What she's saying correlates with JB's teachings too. Eat starchy carbs within a 2 hour window of your workout. After we have depleted your glycogen stores. That is the time of the day your body is least likely to store them as fat. Jari is telling us that we are depleting our glycogen in a round about way.

It's possible she phrases it that way because she's Canadian?
I don't know:eek:
I'm curious, does she explain it in her bonus interviews at the end of the workout? I've never watched the interviews. I guess I should!LOL

I've never watched them either. I may have to do that one day, just so I understand where she's coming from. Her workouts are really, really good, and because they're different from Cathe's, I find it challenges me in good ways to switch back and forth.

Never watched them either! I've heard that any anaerobic activity tends to burn more carbs and aerobic tends to burn more fat, especially if you've already depleted your glycogen stores from your weights workout. I've never really read up on it too much though; I figure I'll just spend my time doing the workout and burning whatever it is that I'm burning :)

I realize she's just making a casual comment but still, I'm thinking "Explain yourself girl!". Maybe she could say "calories from carbs" or something like that. Or maybe we're all a wee bit anal retentive about it :p

Nadja,

I was never bothered by her carb comments. What bothers me is the "Great on you" comment.
I didn't know what the heck she was saying. She doesn't pronounce the word "on" the way I do. It sounds like she saying great anu.

ITA on that. I did one of hers last night and I was beat afterwards. Got some good sleep though ;) I like to mix things up and I really like Jari.

I kinda think her comments are "cute". I always heard 'great on you' though. She seems very warm/motivating but shes also calm/serious.

Another one I don't get is the "feel the power in the san"? Is she saying song? Or is san some zen type thing I haven't heard of? Same etymological source as "anu" I'm sure :p.

The one thing that actually brings a smile to my face is the:
"Where's the pump? Right here." I usually say it out loud with her in my cheesiest voice, it just makes me laugh.

I never noticed that phrase. I'll have to listen for it next time.
Calvillo, I agree. She is a calm/serious. I like that she is different. As much as I love Tony Horton's silly boy behavior.
We all can't be the same!

Carol,
I don't think Kevin is in SS- Firm it up. It was a black guy and he had great form.
I'll have to look for Kevin, but it sounds like I won't miss him. There is one background exerciser that annoys the crap out of me in P90X. I can't remember her name, but she's in the second half of the series. The second arm routine.
I know, I know, we all have our own little quirks. ;)

I'm thinking perhaps I should throw in a week or two of her workouts for my strength training. I've been rotating Slow & Heavy with Gym Styles ... but it might be good to mix things up a bit more.

I think she does say something like "feel the power in the song" or something to that meaning.

I just finished a rotation with the Ripped series.
I'm a big fan of that series. I rotated them for 6 weeks with zero dread.
I didn't purchase her rotation guide, but I found the rotation for intermediate and adavanced.

I rotated all 5 in the series for a few weeks and then moved on the advanced rotation that only included R&C, R1000.

Here is a good classification of each workout to guide you on how to rotate them.

- Original Ripped - strength (slower)
- Slim & Lean - high rep / medium weights for definition
- Ripped to the Core - compound moves
- Ripped 1000 - Circuit
- Ripped & Chiseled - Super Sets (2-3 exercises per body part before going to another body part)

Here are the two rotations I found on the net..... Beginning with the advanced rotation I completed. I'm going to revisit this rotation again next summer. It is a calorie burner!

Week 1:
Day 1: GR1000
Day 2: 60 min. cardio
Day 3: GR&C
Day 4: 60 min. cardio
Day 5: GR&C
Day 6: 60 min. cardio
Day 7: Rest or active rest

Week 2:
Day 1: GR1000
Day 2: GR&C
Day 3: 60 min. cardio
Day 4: GR1000
Day 5: GR&C
Day 6: 70 min. cardio
Day 7: Rest or active rest

Week 3:
Day 1: GR1000
Day 2: GR&C
Day 3: 70 min. cardio
Day 4: GR1000
Day 5: GR&C
Day 6: 90 min. cardio
Day 7: Rest or active rest

Week 4:
Day 1: GR1000
Day 2: 30 min. cardio
Day 3: Rest or active rest
Day 4: 30 min. cardio
Day 5: GR&C
Day 6: 30 min. cardio
Day 7: Rest or active rest

Intermediate rotation:
For weeks 1,2, & 4:
Do RTTC on Mondays
Do S&L on Wednesdays and Fridays
Do cardio 3 times a week on non-Ripped days totaling 30 to 50 minutes

For week 3 (a higher intensity week):
Do RTTC on Monday and Thursday
Do S&L on Tuesday and Friday
Do cardio one day totaling 30 min. and one day totaling 60 min.
Take one rest day each week
Hello, I'm thinking about doing this rotation, what cardio workouts did you do when doing this particular rotation...would insanity be consider cardio workouts? Thanks!
