Push-up Challenge - May 30/06

Morning all!

Okay, I finally got around to checking my baseline this morning, and I did 23 before my arms failed:) I'm pretty pleased with that. That means that I have 20 to go before March 2007. I'm positive I can do that. In fact, I'm so positive, I think I'm going to aim for 50!

HB - how do you suggest adding on? Should I just keep doing my 23 each day until I can add one or two and go about it that way?

Next time try for 24 or 25, and if you don't make it, you don't make it. Always try for a couple more than you did the last time. You'll be amazed at how fast you progress.

I did 300 total yesterday in sets of 25. Today I'll do variations in my Circuit Training class. The best thing about push-ups is that you can do them anywhere and at any time.

Everyone begs for a pre-prescribed "travel" workout, and all you have to do is push-ups, chins (if you can find a bar), and walking lunges. Then you walk or run for cardio, or jump rope in your hotel room. We always have to make everything more difficult than it needs to be.

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." Mark Twain ;-)

I posted my baseline the other day but I'll repeat it here since this is my official start day. I can do exactly zero push ups on my toes:eek: ;( . I'm going to try the method Cathe posted for progressing. She said to do a slow count 10 on the way down and then assist yourself on the way back up.

Wow, Shelley!! I'm totally impressed with your baseline stats.

How often are we supposed to do push ups? I thought I would do them 3 days a week for now but I'd love to know what the ret of you are planning.

Jumping in here if you don't mind!! I started doing pushups a couple yrs ago & could NOT do one manlie!! (boy style on the toes, whatever you want to call them) I think I could only do 10 girlies (on the knees). I had NO upper body strength! Anyway, I started slowly adding in more girlies til I could finally do ONE manlie!

I do at least 1 set of 25 a day, usually 2. I think the most I can do in a row is 45, but haven't tried lately (and just did PUB so I'm not going to try right now! ;-) ). I have done 100 pushups (in sets of 25) also.

Anyway, I think pushups are great for building upper body strength & core too! Just for those that think they'll never be able to do them, I thought that too when I first started out!!

Hugs,

The way I'm doing this and the chin-up challenge is to make attempts every other day (to allow for recovery--I have sometimes ended up doing them 2 days in a row, but my attempts weren't as good after that).

I plan to do as many as I can on my toes, then add in the amount to make up my goal total by doing negatives (get up to the high position, then lower down to the floor, put my knees on the ground and push up from there). Hopefully, I'll be able to add a rep or two a week.

Hi Everyone -

Baseline is 0, ;( but I just had a birthday so I have tons of time to get to 50. I think I will do a mix of working on negatives and doing pushups on my knees until I can do some on my toes.

I managed to do two with my shins on a 12" platform. I hope that qualifies. You know, I explained to Honeybunch that it is hard for me to do push-ups because I am tall and it is harder on the back when one is tall. She didn't go for it, but I am wondering if she really understood how tall I am. I think she believes I am 72 inches tall when I really am 72 feet tall. Hmmmm.....
Uh..Honeybunch. NO NO NO. Please forgive me. PLEASE!!!!!

Ok, everyone, I'm going to try this with all of you as well. I'm 33 will be 34 in September and my goal is going to be 100 push up on the toes. Today was my baseline and I did 41 on the toes. I think 100 is doable by Sept.

Is there any rules I missed or are we just doing them 3 times a week until we build up to the number. Thanks . I'm so excited. I was pretty syked I did 41. Who knew I could do that many until the challenge. I'm pretty happy.

Okay, question for all you guys doing the pushup challenge. . .

I did 25 on my toes yesterday and my goal is 41 by the end of June. (karenvictoria - you're already at my goal!) In order to increase the number I can do, should I focus on pushups only for chest work (skipping the chest presses and flies for now) or do my pushups before the rest of my weighted chest work? Doing pushups alone sounds boring but if it'll help me make my goal of 41 pushups by the end of June, I'm willing to do it. On the other hand, I don't want to needlessly torture myself! }(

Yes, I knew how tall you are, and I still say you can learn how to do them. BUT, you have to believe you can do them, and I'm not sure that you do right now. If you keep saying to yourself, "I can't, I'm too tall, and everyone know tall women can't do push-ups," then you won't be able to do them.

I NEVER said to myself, "Older women can't do lots of push-ups." I made my mind up that I could do 100, and I did it.

Sue -

When I first started to do push-ups big-time, I did other chest work, but now (and for several months) do nothing but push-ups. My strength has not suffered at all. If anything, I'm stronger.

I want to join this, but I think I will have a tough time getting there by my birthday, which is 2 months from tomorrow. I'm GOING to try though.

I can do 8 on my toes right now, and I'll shoot for just my age in push-ups (34). I've been pretty slack with my workouts lately, so this is just what I need

I'm sitting here thinking of my plan of attack to Sue. What I'm going to do is if I have chest in my rotation that day then I will do it. Other than that I am just doing the staight push up on my running days which are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday right now. I am going to try and add on 3 to 5 if possible like honeybunch said but never not doing 41 every time. karen

Karen -

Thanks for letting me know your plan of attack and I'll probably do something similar to you. Two days a week I'll do at least my straight 25 and trying to add on each time. One day a week I'll do 25 plus as many extra sets of negatives and knee pushups as I can.

Based on Honeybunch's comments and the DOMS I'll feeling in my chest this afternoon, pushups are more than enough chest work for me until I hit a plateau.

I'm excited to have a new goal to strive for! :)

Ok, I'm gonna play now ;) Even though I am in a foul mood today and skipped my scheduled w/o I did my baseline. I did 25 on my toes. So I will plan to go from there. Oh and just for good measure, I also did 3 chinups:p :p

Miss Honeybunch, I am going to do them. I know I can do them. I have always heard petite things like myself couldn't do them due to the long back but hHA!!! I am going to do it. I can squat and lunge heavy and I can do push-ups! Gonna take some work, but I am not afraid of work (well, calculus, that is something else, but push-ups are in my future).

Have you ever heard of Gabby Reese? She's a rather famous pro volleyball player, and she's 6'3". She does push-ups, real ones. The women of the WNBA are tall - they do push-ups, real ones. You can do them, too.
