Pure Strength Series

This is the only set of workouts I never bought from Cathe. Would anybody reccomend buying these for variety or are they too dated, etc. I'm tempted to get them but ..........

Thanks,

Adrienne

If you have (and like) S&H and the Gym Styles, you probably won't care for PS. I have them all and only did the PS workouts once. They're much more intermediate, nevermind being dated. Just my two cents, but her later stuff if much better and you're not missing much ;-)

Adrienne,
I have to disagree that the Pure Strength series is intermediate. I have not done them lately, bit I acquired them in a trade on VHS. If they ever went bad, I would seriously consider purchasing them on DVD. They are dated, but they have some good old fashioned exercises that get you to feel the burn rather quickly. There is some awesome floor work using a weighted bar (ankle weights or hand weights can be substitued) that make my outer thigh burn like nothin' else! There is a unique back exercise in the PS series also (unique in that I haven't seen it in any other Cathe workout...I have seen it in another instructor's workout). It's hard to say whether you would find them worth the purchase though if you have everything else. I sometimes appreciate the oldie but goodies, get a great workout, and have fun with the "datedness." Good luck with your decision!

Tough question ... I use the PS and feel more DOMS with these than with other Cathe workouts (including Butts & Guts), however, I don't have the Gym Styles. I have read on this forum that the Gym Styles are an updated version of PS. If anything were to happen to my PS videos, I'd get the Gym Styles just for the varity and update. Deb

I have to say the PS series is still one of my favourites. I've seen good results with it & recommend it highly.

Like other posters, I disagree that the PS series is intermediate. What makes any workout advanced is the weight that you use, the amount of rest that you take and the amount of effort you put in. All of these can be satisfied by the PS series. I used to do thr legs portion all the time. It was my standard leg workout and i grew with it as my first real entry into weight training. I still think it is efficient. I would alternate it with LL from the CTX series for variety.

However, I have to say, that now that I have the Gym Styles, these workouts are superior in my view. I like the music ofr the upper body sets very much, I ignore the music for the lower body because I am focussing so much on the exercises. The GS have a great deal of variety also and using the band and the ball, I think the burn and stress on the muscles is greater than that which PS can offer.

I no longer use the PS series. The S&H upper body work is my all time fave and it gets better results for me than the PS series can.

If you have the cash to burn, you could get the PS series. But, cash is always best saved for future Cathe workouts, I think.

You don't need the PS series. But, you could get it for the sake of variety.

Adrienne,

All of Cathe's workouts are fantastic! You won't go wrong in purchasing any of them.

I've been doing a little study on my own. I wanted to compare Cathe's workouts to bodybuilding.. I've found that the workouts that come very close to bodybuilding are: Pure Strength; Gym Style; and Slow and Heavy. It's always great to confuse your body with all of these great workouts.

These workout are 8-10 reps, and are great for building muscles, and any more than that, would be strength and endurance.

It depends on what you want to do. Build muscle, gain strength, endurance or cardio.

All are beneficial.

I have Pure Strength and I enjoy it. I don't feel it is so dated that I cannot stand it. This series works and the exercises are sequenced differently and are different than the Gym Styles.

The Gym Styles is the more improved version of Pure Strength. They are both split workouts which works nice. However the Pure Strength does not have timesavers.

I say they make a great addition and in my case I'm glad I have them for variety since I only use Cathe for my strength workouts.
