Pull-ups ?

HPLECTRA

Hello Cathe,

How can I build up to doing better at pull-ups! So far I can do 4 underhand, 2 overhand, 3 (hammer style) and 1 wide (Y style if that makes sense) with good form and chin over the bar. :) (Using the Pro Fit Iron Man workout bar)
Oh...and no kicking off to get up there! ;)

Do you or anyone have a workout rotation for this?

Thank you for your reply.
Heidi

I'll have what she's having !!!!

Gulp, ahhh, Heidi, you are already there. Keep doing what your doing and the numbers will gradually go up. Way to go.... and no kicking off to get there??? You go girl!

Thank you Cathe! I guess by doing one or two extra each time I will eventually get to
20. ;)

Hey Melissa! Nice to see you are still with us! I am working on this because my boys have challenged me to reach 20! ;) I bought this bar for them for Christmas and they are really enjoying it. Lifting your full body weight is quite a challenge and works your bi's, chest and back muscles! I am feeling it!!!

Take Care,
Heidi

Hi Heidi - here is a trick that my trainer has me do. She has a band - not like Cathe's but more like a large rubber band - we use the black one. She loops it around the pull up bar and then pulls it down to my feet so I can step into it. So imagine me standing in what is basically a large sling shot. Try your pull ups this way - it gives you a little bit of a boost from the bottom, but you have to pull to get over that bar. This is sort of like a make shift assisted pull-up machine. I don't have the rubber band type things at home, but I did tie (super tight) a medium resistance band onto my bar and it works the same way. I just have to keep checking the knot every time I use it this way to be sure it's not slipping. Pull ups are tough aren't they. I really want to be able to do a bunch completely unassisted. HTH.

Hi Sherry! :) Ok....who is ready for this challenge? ;)

Lorrie: Thank you for the idea! That does sound like it would help.

The right of passage to the basement for my workout....do as many pull-ups/chin-ups as I can! ;)

Doing unassisted pullups is a goal of mine as well. I bought some rubber tubing from Power Systems and rigged something similar to what you describe. I can finally do a pull up, assisted of course. I figure that when I can do 20 assisted, maybe I could do 1 alone and work from there--we'll see;).

To the op--you definitely rock!

Hi Maggie!

That is a great idea from LSass I must agree.

So far I have not tried it but I am working towards my goal little by little. Yesterday I did 5! ;) underhanded. Still working on the other hand positions for these are much harder.

Good luck to you! Just try a few unassisted to see how well you do. :)

Take Care,
Heidi

Heidi, great job! I agree with Cathe-just keep at it. I love pull ups/chin ups. I couldn't do but maybe 1-2 chin ups before, but after doing a P90X rotation last year I can do sets of 8-10 reps of the different variations and I love what they do for my muscles:) And I can do more than my DH which is always a bonus;)

Good luck!

Hi Maggie,

Which of the bands did you get from Power Systems? They have several to choose from and I don't know which one would be the best to start with.

TIA

Look at those back muscles!!! Wow!

I am still at 5 pull-ups for underhanded unassisted. ;) It doesn't help when my boys starting counting and then make me laugh! I lose all my strength....what ever strength I might have had for more that is!!!! :)

Awesome job!

Thank you Maggie and Klaudia for your comments! I truly appreciate it! Off to try do more than 5! ;)

Hi there,

I bought the 25 foot length of black tubing and went from there. I cut two largish pieces from it, tied them off tightly to make loops and then sort of wrapped them around the bar until they hung down at the right length to give me the right support. My system is kind of unsightly, but seems secure.

Also, I googled "how to assist pull ups with a band" and found some visuals which helped with how to attatch the band, but I can't remember the website--try searching and I'm sure you'll find something helpful.

Hope that helps a bit!

Um, my jaw is on the floor!!!! :eek:What exercises did you all use to build the muscle for pull-ups? I have a trainer who helps me, but honestly I feel horrible doing them very often because she has to support so much of my bodyweight...it's rather embarrassing! I've tried laying under the Smith machine and pulling up from a prone position (sort of a reverse push-up) but even those kill me???? Any ideas other than losing about 100#s so I have less mass to pull up!?!?! :p
