pull up question

I've been trying to do these and can't. Is there a way to work up to doing at least one. I'm so frustrated. My boyfriend got me one of those no installation door chin up bars last week and I was psyched until I tried to do one:eek: I couldn't even pull myself up half way:-(

Any word on the new chin up product? I like my new bar but I'm excited to see Cathe's.

Most people (men and women) in the general populatino can't do a single pull-up, so don't be discouraged! In fact a new book out, "The New Rules of Lifting for Women", has as one of its goals getting women to do ONE pull-up. It starts with negatives (getting yourself up over the bar anywhichway you can, then lowering slowly).

Another way of working up to chin-ups and pull-ups is to use a kitchen chair with a back on that I you put my feet on, to lighten the load somewhat. Some people use what look like huge rubber bands to help.

You can also do pull-ups/chin-ups from a lower level, by using something like a ballet barre (for example, a Fluidity bar).

Negative pullups are a great way to start
Use a "Gravitron" if you have access to one
Jumping pullups also help build up that strength
One leg on a chair also helps

There is a thing called "kipping pullups" as well - some people will say this is cheating but its also just another modification of a pullup until you can do a few on your own.

I find chin-ups easier and pullups hard!

Thanks for the encouragement ladies and thanks Fit Fairy, I think I will join the chin up check-in. All of the modifications sound good. I wanted to make sure I understand the difference between a pull up and chin up. With pull ups you have greater distance between your arms and your working more of your lats & chinups your arms are close (more in front of you) and you feel it more in your biceps/triceps?

Chin-ups: Your palms are facing you.

Pull-ups: Your palms facing away.

I can do 7 or so chin-ups, but not one pull-up!

With chin-ups, biceps assist a lot more than with pull-ups, which is why they are easier.

>Excellent article - the best on pull-ups I've seen yet.
>Thanks for posting it!

Yes, thanks so much for posting this, HappyMomof3! What great advice!

Yeah, good article. But I'm a bit puzzles that it doesn't address those who can't even do one unassisted pull-up/chin-up yet (at least not that I saw in skimming it). The author seems to assume that everyone can do at least one on their own, which is patently false.
