Protein Drinks and Bars

What type of protein drinks do you all enjoy? Right now I drink Secure Protein Drinks after cardio which have 70 calorie ,1.5 g of fat , and 6.4 of protein. Now after I lift i usually have a protein bar with about 220 calories 11g of fat and 17 g of protein. What are you using out there and why or why not you recommend them. I really don't drink any particular thing, this is just what I happened to buy. I would like to be a little more educated on this as far as how much protien in a drink or bar you would consume after doing say pub or plb or even slow and heavy as opposed to Imax. I would like a protein shake more so then a bar for the summertime after working out Summer!!!!! Ahhhhhh can hardly wait. Karen

I use Protoplex. It has 270 calories, 20 calories from fat, and 42 grams of protein. I use a lot of ice with the powder and blend it for a long time so it has a better consistency. The chocolate is the only one I've tried and the flavor isn't too bad.

The way I like to use this one in particular is to split the serving in half. I work out mid-morning, so I make half a shake and use it for my mid-morning meal (after the workout). Then I will make the other later in the afternoon as a snack. That spreads the calories out over a wider period and I feel it allows my body to better utilize the protein than having it all at once.

I'll use protein bars occasionaly as a snack, but they usually have so much sugar or fat that they are a last resort for me.

Hope this helps a little.

Lunacat-where do you get the Protoplex? 42 grams of protein..WOW! I get mine from Costco's, a Whey mix with 22 grams of protein. I also eat the protein bars too even though they taste terrible. The more protein in the bars, the worst they taste, but I don't always eat for taste...just for purpose.

I get mine from Vitamin World. I know GNC doesn't carry it, and the people there look at me like I'm crazy when i ask for it. It's made by U.S. Nutrition in Oakdale, NY 11769, that what it says on the back of a packet, so maybe you could find it online?

Yes, I'd love to know where you get the Protoplex. I have been using a whey protein that only has 23 grams of protein per serving. It tastes pretty good and only has 110 calories. I'd rather have the larger protein amount. Please let us know where you get yours.
Thanks, Celina

Celina,

What brand are you using? The numbers on that work out better than Protoplex if you double your servings:

Protoplex 270 calories.......42 grams of protein
Yours x2 220 caolries.......46 grams of protein

Hey, this is true...I always did hate math..hahaha
The name is ON's. I bought the double rich chocolate flavor. It is really good. I got it from GNC.

Hi Karen, I use Isopure zero carb protein powder. It has 210 cal, 50Gms Pro and of course no carbs. I drink it after I lift to make sure I replace the protien in my body. They have lots of flavors, mine is Alpine punch. You mix it with water and some ice. it is very refeshing. Lisa

Thanks this helps me a lot. I told my husband this year the Easter bunny better bring me some isopure, and protoplex in my basket . Question Do you drink the isopure or the protoplex after a cardio workout or just after weight training Karen

On cardio only days, I'll use the Protoplex whenever I feel peckish and need a snack. On weight days, I drink it immediately following my workout. I also eat a lot of high protein foods daily, like beans, egg whites, vegetarian meat replacements, etc. The goal for me is about 110-120 gams of protein daily. If I can meet that goal without the protein shakes, I will. But they are a good back up for days when all I feel like eating is oatmeal and salad!

Thanks Lucacat. I am going to go figure out how much protein I need now. Lately since begining slow and heavy I have increase my protein but for some reason am still extremely hungry.Maybe I'm not getting enough. Karen

I am using protiein bars. I bought a couple boxes from drugstore.com last week (they're Pure Protein bars). I had posed a similar question to the forum about whether I should get bars or powder. The consensus was that I should get powder (but I had already placed my order). Most people said the bars made them gassy. Well...I've had 2 of them so far and definitely know what the ladies were talking about!

I've got 22 more bars to finish, but then I'm going to switch to powder. Or maybe I'll just add a couple more glasses of organic skim milk a day to my diet. There's no fat, just as much protein, it's all natural and is fairly cheap. Plus...it doesn't upset my digestive system.

Hi Karen, I use Isopure when I lift and I use a whey protein powder that has some carbs after an intense Cathe workout. I am trying to cut carbs but realize you need some after doing cardio for over an hour. Take care, Lisa

I have used/taken MetRx high protein-meal replacement chocolate flavor drink mix everyday for over 10 years. I either take it after I lift or on days that I do not lift I drink it for lunch. I dont get sick as often and I gain that muscle I work so hard for. I cant eat the bars the coatings with mannitol make my tummy hurt. And I think shakes contain less fat, more protein, and a lot less sugar overall. TO each his/her own.

" Most people said the bars made them gassy. "

I have the opposite problem the Protein Powder makes me gassy- go figure.
