Protein Bars

Can anyone recommend a good protein bar that isnt too high on carbs or sugar and has at least 18 grams of protein???

I have a protein bar every other day because I find that they are good and to feel as if Im not restricting myself too much.

Pure Protein has a pretty good one... 20 gms of protein at about 200 calories... They aren't too expensive and the taste is decent.
IMHO, the chocolate peanut butter one is the best.... I like to eat them with an apple for lunch if I'm not able to get some "real" food.
You can find them almost anywhere.. Sam's sells them in case packs. Target and Walmart have decent prices on them too as individuals.

Take care, Lynn M.

I used to eat Think Thin bars. Very tasty high protein some fiber. I haven't eaten them in awhile so I don't know the facts - you can google them though.
Right now I eat an ATkins bar - choc peanut Butter
Sorry, out at the moment but I think they're between 200- 250 calories
18 - 20 grams of proein
11 grams of fiber
sugar is low also I believe.

Oooooh. What a great thread. This is one of those things I should've asked but never got around to. I'm checking out everything that's not too pricey.

I actually really like some of the Balance bars...some of them are a little dense, but the mint chocolate one is really good, may have a few grams under 18G of protein, but are tasty. Odwalla's Super Protein bar is really good too.

i love supreme protein chocholate peanut butter bars. they have 2 sizes, one is 350cals which is the large one. I get the smaller one which has 200cals. They are soooo good.

I never heard of Supreme Protein or Think Thin. I have to look for those. I've seen the Odwalla ones's before but didnt know they were high in protein. I thought they were just nutrition bars same with Balance Bars I'll also look into those. I usually buy the Pure Protein Bars the Chewy chocolate chip one is my favorite one. I've tried the EAS Advant low carb ones, MetRx, Myoplex. I was looking for something new so thanks guys!!!!!:):):)

Most of the Odwalla bars aren't high in protein - only the Super Protein is. I'm currently switching between Luna bars (not very high in protein - about 9 grams - but 70% organic and low glycemic).

I like Think Thin bars- tastes good, high protein (@20 grams) and lowest in sugar compared to others.

I compared all the 'numbers' one time and found that think thin had the highest protein, lowest sugar and calories, as compared to all the others. Peanut Butter is the best tasting.

Costs about 1.69 each. Can get them at Krogers, Trader Joes and Whole Foods.

I go back to them time after time, though I try not to eat often, whole food is better. But a good fill-in when I can't get whole food in die to schedule.

Another alternative is a small bag of unsalted, whole almonds with rasins in my purse at all times. Clean food, great protein and stabilizes hunger and blood sugar if my schedule is crazy... keeps me on track with 5 meals a day.

I am not that much into protein bars but will eat them every once in a while if nothing else healthy is available. Jay Robb protein bars are about the only ones I eat. I prefer Larabars and Dr. Weil but they have no added protein and may not be what you are looking for.

Be careful with protein bars. Most of them are really not that healthy, even if you look at the ingredients list and it looks okay, it depends on what protein they use. Some of them are pure chemical "factories".

Also, you mentioned that you want at least 18 g protein. Many people are not aware that 18 g protein in one bar is not the same as the same amount in another bar. Meaning that it depends on the biological value and digestability of the protein. This website explains the biological value really well http://www.bodybuildingpro.com/proteinrating.html

Another one I forgot about but like alot is the Kraft's South Beach Bars. Not the ones you usually find at the grocery store granola bar aisle. These are usually in with the "protein bar aisle".

They are very tasty and have 19 gms of protein for about 210 calories... I believe there is about 6 gms of fiber in them too ( I don't have any here at home to verify that, though.)

The peanut butter and the chocolate caramel crisp ones are really yummy!

One more comment on protein bars to throw in.. be careful of the sugar alcohols in some of them that are used to replace the sugar to get the "carb" count down... Some people are very sensitive to them .. anything that has maltitol, lactitol, sorbitol... proceed with caution.. they can give you bloating, and/or an upset tummy. You may not be bothered by it, but just thought you might appreciate knowing, just in case it happens to you.

Take care, Lynn M.

I agree with Carola that you really have to be careful with the ingredients. Some are a far cry from clean eating. I'm hard pressed to find any without sugar alcohols (maltitol, etc) which make me become a balloon OR artificial sweeteners which I'm trying to avoid d/t migraines.

I'm ever hopeful when I go grocery shopping to find one that fits what I want. I've been hard pressed to find a decent one that won't tear me up.

Last I went to shoprite and bought the Clif Builder's Bar OMG!!! It was so goood ! Kind of high on the calories 270 but it has 20 grams of protein. Organic. I figured I did the 4DS cardio premix of bootcamp/kickbox so I could afford the extra calories.LOOL:D:D

I love the 20g Builder Bars too- I try to only eat them once a week or so because it is such a processed food. But they do cut the chocolate cravings and I like the high protein factor, so I keep eating them. :)

I love the other suggestions here- I'll have to check some of them out!

Carola- thanks for that link, by the way. Interesting and I never really thought about how efficiently your body uses protein based on the source.
