Progressing to higher impact?

I'm getting back into working out, have rediscovered Cathe workouts, and I'm LOVING them! I'm 46, just got better shoes, and am going to buy the health club step because the one I have now is just hard plastic....no "give" at all.

Right now I stick with lower impact moves because my knees and ankeles get sore, but I'm wondering, will my joints get stronger, and eventually be able to handle the high impact stuff? Thanks!
