progesterone cream & perimenopause

Dear ladies:

I have good reason to believe that my body is deeply entrenched in perimenopause and I have questions for you all about it. Those of you who have also experienced this, can you share?

1. Did you ever find a really good book on the subject?

2. Did you ever try progesterone cream to relieve symptoms? If you did, what benefits did you notice? How many months did you have to apply the crem for before you began to notice the improvements?

3. Did you make dietary adjustments that also helped you to better health and greater bodily stability? What changes did you make?

Thank you so much, in advance, for any advice, help, information you have to share with me, and others who may also be going through this.

Clare :)

Like Clare, I'd like to hear what you all have to say too. I am so confused with all the pros & cons with HRT, creams, herbal supplements and so forth. Thanks Clare, great questions!

I'm using natural progesterone cream for a different reason from the ones you mention, but have read plenty of good things about it. check out http://www.johnleemd.com

some good brands:
Emerita (available at health food stores)
Arbonne (available through a local rep - similar to Avon/Mary Kay - or online)

I'd advise you to stay away from creams with animal by-products in them.

Good luck!

This is a fabulously informative website, thanks so much for highlighting it. Debbie, check it out! I'm going to get Dr. Lee's book from my local library.

Hi there,

I'm a little too young to be going through perimenopause, but I have other problems that require me to take oral bioidentical progesterone. It has literally changed my life :)

Another good resource is http://www.drnorthrup.com/

She has written some great books on the subject.

I hope you find what you're looking for, good luck!!

I take .5 to 1 mg of melatonin every night for 10 years now, so I sleep well. I started to wake up and go back to sleep a lot when I was 38 or so.

I also use ground flax seed and lots of soy stuff. All my milk and protein powder is soy based. Plus I eat fake meats, tempeh, tofu, edamame, soy flour in baking, and all that. My weight is low (130 and 5'8") so I have low body fat. I was up to 140, but by losing this last ten pounds I have made my periods lighter. They were getting pretty heavy. Now they are normal again. I think the flax seed and soy make a difference due to all their good fats and phytoestrogens.

I also use Retin-A on my face to control wrinkles and age spots, use a lot of sunscreen, eat very clean, drink a lot of green and black tea. I'm 46 and have virtually no symptoms of any kind. I think I am holding them at bay with lifestyle choices. At least that's what I like to believe.

I've been using progesterone cream for several years. I get mine from a local compounding pharmacist, who will also ship anywhere. He makes the stuff up in his lab. He also recommended Dr. Lee's books and they are wonderful. As far as diet, I use a soy protein drink and take a calcium/magnesium before bedtime. Works pretty well and I'm OLD (53)! Alexis

I'll be 54 in 3 weeks. Does that count? I know I'm not old but I got bummed out yesterday afternoon. I rushed to get a pair of pantyhose for my DH Christmas party on the way home. I don't OWN a pair of pantyhose and I'm convinced that wearing them makes me grouchy! Anyway, the clerk was about my age and asked me if I wanted a free calendar. I said sure. She said, "Oh, it's a great calendar. All the senior citizen discount shopping days are marked." WHAT!?!?!? I was soooo stunned, baffled, POed, confused that I said nothing and then ran to my car to look in the rearview mirror. It's hard to beat down my ego so I decided that she was senile! But it still haunts me....... Alexis

Babe!

Alexis, Alexis, why do you do this to yourself? You are a babe, remember? Hey, my oldest sister is 56 and my mother is 81 and they are both younger than that person who said that to you! My mom was 53 when I was 13 and she has been and she continues to be amazing! She's very spry and if anyone implies she's old, she'll do a high kick and give them a dirty look. She did that last year when she visited for my nieces wedding! It was funny but it reinforced my desire to keep my bod limber! It is in the attitude, dude! (Did you just call me dude? I always say that when my kids call me dude, but it rhymed so forgive me , ok?)
Are you going to let some clerk who needs a stronger eyeglass prescription make you feel bad! No way! You toss out one of your famous zingers and let her know how tactless she is! Now, being that I am the boss of you, I am grounding you from all tv and magazines for one week! You have forgotten that real women get older and it's a beautiful thing! Circle of life and all that! Go to the following link and read!

RE: Babe!

Bobbi, You are my soul sister! What a great link! Gotta buy that book. I wrote the above on 3 hrs sleep, and we all know what we sound like when we're sleep deprived, don't we?;-) Dude, is OK, you just can't call me Al, mostly cuz it's my dad's name. I'll see ya at the "fort" to elaborate.

It turned out OK cuz then I went to the party and everybody thought I was a babe. Coulda been the soft lighting but I'll go with "natural babe." Alexis

Crones, Unite!

That explains it, Alexis, dude! On three hours sleep, I look AND feel like a centenarian! My cheerful and youthful demeanor go AOL and my life becomes tragic! The reason my demeanor is youthful is that I AM cheerful because when your skin is dry as a bone and you run for ten years in the Arizonan desert (Not to mention the smoking and boozing years http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/person/bandit.gif http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/party/drinka.gif http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/pfohnmacht.gif ) you don't look like those freaks who represent 40 year old's on tv.

RE: Babe!

Alexis - you rule! (now did you go for the thigh highs, or the suck your stomach in and can't breathe control top?)
Bobbi - you and your mama both rule!

:) kelli

RE: Babe!

I was afraid I'd lose circulation in my legs with thigh-high so I went with the full. I had visions of stockings at my ankles while I boogied the nite away. Did you know they don't make pantyhose WITHOUT control top anymore? Couldn't find a pair. No, I couldn't breathe. I don't need no stinkin control top!

RE: Babe!

eek. those control top hose are the pits! if we wanted to be totally uncomfortable all night, unable to breathe and turning purple, we can just buy a girdle! :p I hope you had a grand time despite the hose!

RE: Babe!

I refuse to wear them! Thank god I don't have plans to wear a dress becasue my legs are white and dry and mostly pretty hairy these days!

Kelli, when we were in Michigan last summer my mom jumped up on the counter to get something from the top cupboard. (she's about 4'11" these days) She is so spry! My kids couldn't believe her and she's strong because she raised 13 kids and cleans and launders and stays in motion all the time!

RE: Babe!

As my physical therapist said when my hip got really bad, "Motion is lotion" to the joints. And it's true. If we go on a long car trip, like a 15 hr drive, my hip hurts for a day or two after. That's why this girl is always moving. Alexis

In a desprate bid to drag this thread back to its original topic;-) ,
can I ask again, does anyone out there have a success or cautionary tale to share with me and Debbie about progesterone creams?

Thanks guys

Clare :)

Clare,
My good friend uses the progesterone cream and thinks it is a life saver. She said the main thing it's done for her is stop nights sweats and hot flashes. I asked her about cons and she said the only con is that she has to use it! Other then that she swears by it.

Edited to add: She's been using it for three years.
