Presidental Election

Me too -- although McCain was not my first choice, he's our nominee so he shall have my vote. He's a little too liberal for my tastes, but I'm hoping we'll end up with a majority in congress again, and they will keep him in check. ;)

If you get HBO, check out the Bill Maher show. It's fascinating. He has many people on, from both sides of the aisle and of every "type" (policitians, professors, authors, reporters, actors, military folks, etc.). If find I hear about things on that show I don't hear anywhere else. And they actually discuss and debate topics. It's very enlightening.

I'm not wild about any of these folks. Really, is this the best we can do? Hilary is generally a nightmare. Obama, I can't figure out what he's done that has folks so starry-eyed. He needs to cook for a few more years and then he might just be ready. McCain, same old same old, though he may end up getting my vote by default.

Unless of course I decide to send my father into palpitations by writing in "Ron Paul". :D

Sparrow, my DH wanted Ron Paul, too. I wanted Duncan Hunter x(

As for Obama -- I have no clue what the attraction is.

Phew, glad it isn't just me!!! I was willing to vote for Hil to get her the nom over Obamy, but in the general election I'll be voting Republican. I wish I liked McCain better though. Not that this is related to anything, but he's not looking too good these days. Honestly, I look at him at those press conferences and wonder what is holding that man together? The last 4 years have not been kind to him. :( I actually like Ron Paul better too, but he doesn't have a chance in heck of getting the nom.

Im just gonna come right out and say it...and honestly I dont mean to offend anyone so pleaseeee dont take this the wrong way...and before I go any further I want to make note that I am an african american with this opinion...(taking deep breath) I dont think america is ready for a black president just yet...dont get me wrong...I think it would be an amazing accomplishment for not only black history but america as well...it would kind of show how far we have come as far as racism goes...but at the same time im concerned about his safety should he make it to the white house. Not saying he wouldnt be protected but there are alot of nuts out there...i dont know just a thought

Absolutely NO offense taken ;)

Really? I don't know if I agree with you about that. It seems to me that Obama easily crossed racial lines in his campaign. He wouldn't be in the lead if he hadn't captured the majority of white votes. If it weren't for the Rev. Wright fiasco, I think Obama would have the democratic nomination sewn up. Having said this, he doesn't appeal to me at all -- not because of his color (I'd vote for Condi Rice!), but because I don't like his politics.

ITA with Michele! Not only about Obama but about the fact that there is nothing offensive in your post :)

And, I have always believed that we will have a black/hispanic/asian male president before we'll have a female of any color.

I vote Pepper for Prez and Tuxedo for Veep

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1391/5430336/15019516/226753601.jpg

Pepper and Tuxedo 08 Clean up dirty politics :p

McCain is the senior senator from my home state and I used to really like him, in fact, I was hoping in 2000 that he would be nominated AND win the general election. Boy, have things changed, he scares the crap out of me now. With all his foreign policy credentials he can't even differentiate between Suni, Shia and Al Queda x( , not to mention his "bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran" comment WOW!!!! And then his temper tantrums and short fuse, not sure that will come in handy when he talks with foreign governments.

I was originally rooting for Hillary but how she carried herself throughout the primaries, the constant twisting the facts, overembellishing and attacks, really don't sit well with me. Not to mention that she is running high debt on her campaign and doesn't pay her vendors, how is she going to run the country if she can't manage her campaign?

And then Bill Clinton's defense of her sniper fire exaggeration in Bosnia. She was tired and exhausted late at night when she mentioned it, she mispoke once (no, she told the story on 3 different occassions - in the morning and afternoon). Makes me wonder how she handles that 3 am phone call then. I'd probably chose her over McCain though.

I was kind of leary about Obama at first but he is the one I would vote for now. I don't know what the big deal about "experience" is. If experience is longevity in Washington, well, then he doesn't have much. Abraham Lincoln only had 2 years in the US House of Representatives under his belt when he was elected president and he did pretty well. Obama has been elected and serving in public office for 10 years, Sen. Clinton for 6 years.

In my experience, however, years in a particular profession doesn't really equal experience. In my job I sometimes come across people with 20 or 30 years experience and when I read through their contracts my eyes start rolling manically

I guess some people are claiming that Obama has ties to terrorist groups but in the 90s it was also claimed that the Clinton's were involved in money laundering and drug dealers and were involved in the murder or unexplained deaths of several aides. Good grief!!

I like Obama's no nonsense and common sense approach, not your every day politician and I like the fact that he hasn't been screwed up by Washington politics YET. The way he runs the financials and other things on his campaign makes me hope that he will be able to get this financial disaster in our country under control. Does he make mistakes and says things that could be offensive? Sure he does, just like the rest of us. He seems genuine to me. Maybe I am wrong.

In any case, voting for any candidate is a leap of faith. We won't know what kind of president they will be until well into their first term. And whichever candidate will prevail about half of the country will be unhappy.

Ok I hate these kind of threads but here goes---

I am voting for McCain. We are military and Clinton wants to take away the raise just given to the military! They put thier lives on the line and are away from thier families for months-years at a time and she wants to take money away from them! As for her free health care-dont ya just wonder what free is like? Who is going to pay for that and you all know you get what you pay for.

As for the war in Iraq I know people want to pull the troops but that will be our downfall in the end. It will start another 9/11.
So I am voting for McCain although I am not happy with the choices-I too would have voted for Fred Thompson, now I am left with McCain.

Natural Beauty,

There was nothing at all offense about your post, and I applaud you for your honesty about the subject. In fact my DH has voiced the same concerns about Obama becoming president,we have come a long way, but there are still horrid racist people in the world who would hate to see a black man become president of the most powerful country in the world.
Thanks for being honest about the way you feel.

I'm strongly pulling for Hillary but will vote for Obama if he gets the nomimation. I actually wanted McCain in 2000 over W. but he got slaughtered by W's campaign machine. Because of W., I DON'T put a lot of stock in how well "run" a candidate's machine is purported to be. Frankly, the media sound bites and right wing radio talk hosts take away the meat of all messages and leave only condiments for mass consumption. I prefer to read my news rather than have it delivered to me via television, "pre-digested and analyzed for my benefit" by any network.

I couldn’t agree more. IMO socialized medicine in the US is such a staggeringly bad idea I can’t understand why so many people support the idea. Why on earth do people want the government in charge of health care? Is it because its done such a bang up job with the DMV, the IRS, the DOE, the USDA, the DOD, and FEMA? We have no shortage of general government boobery in our lives – why do people want more?!

As you say, people hear the word “free” and think “yippee!” But it’s not free. And the people who are going to pay for it are the same folks who are footing the bill for everything NOW: working and middle class people. AFAIAC socialized medicine will be just another way for the gov to bleed these folks dry, while robbing them of privacy (national health bank) and medical choice. The rich always find a way not to pay, and if the system allows for it, they’ll have private doctors and all the treatment they want. The poor already have access to subsidized health care through SSI, Medicare, Medicaid, disability and a host of other state and local entitlement programs. No politician with re-election dreams is going to touch that. The working and middle classes on the other hand will pay even higher taxes for yet another entitlement program that puts them in the belly of the beast: doctors they don’t want, procedures they can’t get, long waits for treatment, that sort of thing. These folks won’t be able to hire private doctors because they won’t be able to afford it, what with the high taxes and all.

What’s more, as my father liked to say when I was whiny kid, “he who holds the gold makes the rules.” If people think employers are overstepping by dictating lifestyle choices to people they insure, wait until the government gets its hands in there. Personally, I consider myself a fully-actualized adult, one who doesn't want or need the gov telling me when and how I get my medical check-ups, or what I have to weigh, or what recreational activities are are too unsafe for little ol' me.

I’ve lived under all kinds of insurance situations, including socialized medicine. And while they all have good and bad points, the bottom line for me is that I don’t want the government dictating and mandating my health choices. Ever. No way. Full stop.

That said, I think socialized medicine will eventually make its way here, because that is the way the nanny state winds are blowing in our country. When that happens look for the media, who love to do the Big Bad Private Health Care, “here’s Louise who can’t afford the medicines for her diabetes, hypertension, CPD, lumbago, hammer toes and gout, she’s also 350lbs and smoked two packs a day for 20 years but we won’t mention that” stories to switch to Big Bad Socialized Medicine “here’s Dinah who has to wait 2 years for a lung transplant under UHC" stories." <insert eye-rolling> Americans want the same system we have now, only for free, and that's not gonna happen.

(On a slightly related note,if anyone is interested in reading more about endemic government incompetence, I suggest The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans and the Mississippi Coast. While private organizations like Wal-Mart, Pepsi and Home Depot where busy flying supplies in by the ton and people out by the hundreds, FEMA spent days trying to cut through its own red tape, just to get a few porta-johns in to the Superdome.)

Sorry for the early morning rant! The right to be left alone is near and dear to me, and all this government encroachment terrifies me no end. No offense intended to anyone or his/her beliefs. I'm always open to having my mind changed. :)

Sparrow the Libertarian :)

Come to think of it...are we ready for a woman president? :) I think its about "the best man or woman" for the job of course. But when you think about how incredible it is that a black man and a woman are running for president, wow...it is actually really exciting isn't it?

I just wish politics weren't so phony and I could actually believe in someone, I just don't have that confidence in any of these candidates. They are all so full of you know what... Think I might vote for my dog George!

;)
