Premature ovarian Failure

x( EEK. I am 39 years old and my ovaries have shut down. Labs confirmed it this week. Although I have suspected it for over a year. My gyn poo pooed my suggesting it last year and I really didn't push it. I've been on birth control pills for endometriosis for a long time and started having hot flashes even while on the pill. Now the week off the pill (when you get to have your period) I really got hot flashes. Being a Nurse Practitioner- I stopped my pills for a month and no period but horrible and I mean horrible hot flashes and night sweats. checked my labs and even did a bone density test. Labs proved it and my bone density is mod low!!!:( So now I am on fosamax to rebuild my bones and have an appoint to discuss with my gyn. Mean time I can't sleep, my workouts suck- no energy and I am so irritable I can't stand myself!! I did start my pills back and things have calmed down just a bit. But this SUCKSx( x( Sorry to go on so long just had to vent.

thanks for listening!!

That does suck. The low bone density reading is scary especially considering all the exercise we ladies do, in part to prevent osteoporosis. The only good news is that you persisted with your suspicions and are now being treated. Good luck with the fosamax treatment. Can that help build bone density or does it just prevent further loss? What has the doctor said about high impact exercise? Can you still continue to do that?
We are all rooting for you. Keep us posted.

thanks Cathy
Yes fosamax does rebuild bone of course I have to take calcium too. I can still do impact but I am gonna tone it down a bit. Probably no tuck jumps for a while. I can only imagine what my bones would be like if I didn't workoutx( .
thanks again

Catherine I am sorry to hear that! Hang in there and it will get better. My neice who is 39 had a complete hysterectomy a few months ago because of endometritis which destroyed her ovaries. She was on an estrogen patch, testosterone cream and oral progesterone. She felt much as you did even after startng her hormones. She had bloodwork and discovered she was breaking down the oral dose and not getting it and she's switched to a transdermal cream. I wonder if the way your hormones are delivered might have some bearing on how your body utilizes it? Hound your doctor if you must. You will find the right treatment that will make you feel youself again and venting is good for the soul! :) I hope you feel better very soon!

thanks bobbi
yeah the patches work better and I,m gonna probably try that. Just wonder if it'll stay on with all the sweating I do-LOL. I was pretty shocked at my bone density considering I was on the pill and exercising the way that I do. But there is something called the first pass effect (which I won't go into) when you take certain med orally it's not all absorbed. But transdermally thru the skin puts it directly into the blood stream. Oh and hot flashes add a whole new meaning to working out and sweating!!!

Catherine, I'm sorry that you are going through this difficult time right now, but also wanted to thank you for sharing your experience.
Hang in there:)

Yes, hang in there..it's hard when your body does its own thing and you can't control it. :-(

Hi, Catherine -

My co-worker is also taking something for her low bone density. I'm sorry you're also going through this. Please take care of yourself and go easy for awhile. It is definitely a good thing you are exercising already!

And vent away if it helps! We're all listening!

hi catherine

oh my i can totally relate. i had a complete hysterectory 11 months ago and it has only been the last few weeks that i have felt half way decent. after the surgery (which was done vaginally and was a piece of cake) i went through hormone-hell trying to find the right blend. i am apparently one of a very few number of women who can't tolerate oral hormones and i became very ill. it took 4 doctors to figure that out, gyno, general, cardiologist and gastric. i had more test then i ever want to think about. and night sweats... for 4 months i never slept more than 45 minutes at a clip experiencing up to 12 complete soaking sweats in a night. i really thought that i might die from exhaustion. i kept saying it's just sweat how can it me ruining my life

finally found a new gyno who put me on femring which is a time released vaginal ring that i wear for 3 months. within 4 days the hot flashes were cut in half and by the end of two weeks they were almost gone. i still experience one or two light (hot but not sweaty) ones a night. but i am thrilled.

i am slowly working my way to normal. my hair has stopped thinning and is actually growing back.

my only advice is that YOU know your body the best. no one wanted to listen to me when i say could it be the hormones. one doctor wanted to send me to a shrink. like i could psychosomatic the sweats!

keep looking until you find a doctor who listens.

you have my complete and total sympathy

good luck,
debbie russo

Hi Catherine,

I have zero experience in this area, but I just wanted to send you some support anyway! You are right, what you are going through really does stink. I hope things start looking up soon!

Thanks to all for your support and well wishes.

Debbie Russo
thanks for sharing your story. I know I am not alone in my misery. I can not believe your doctor wanted you to see a shrink!!!
