Prayers to the Catheites in the Santa Cruz Mtns

Cathlete
I remember reading that a few of us Catheites live in the Santa Cruz mountains in the Bay Area of California. I hope your families and homes are out of harms way from the fire!

Sending prayer in your direction if you are there.

We are just over the hill on the East side and so far if the wind holds up will be fine. Have IL's just on the other side of Mt. Madonna though.

Last time it took a while to get out and the winds are horrible right now.

Are you on the north east side of 17 Christine?

Jacque - I live near Saratoga, so I'm okay. I have a lot of friends who have houses in the mountains, though. Certainly scary. I hope the winds die down quickly! They are gale force in the mountains.

Stay safe, everyone. As a precaution, get those tanks filled to the brim just in case you have to evacuate and get stuck in traffic. Also, pack those pictures and keepsakes in your cars.

I'm sending thoughts and prayers up north to all of you.

Thanks for your good wishes. I'm not far from the fire, but fortunately the wind is with me at the moment. If it blows right at us, we are in trouble. The biggest problem right now is that we are house-bound -- that is, if we leave, we cannot come back, so we don't want to leave unless we really have to. This could go on for a few days. Good thing we have chickens -- we may be eating a lot of eggs in the next few days. :)

I packed up this morning -- including a box full of cathe tapes! :)

Thinking of you Beth. Didn't catch too much of the news today but did I hear that the winds have another day or two with us?

Hope they can get it under some sort of control which is so hard with the winds.

Am just now seeing they expect approx 10K acres - will that affect you?

Please continue to post so we know you're OK:-(

My thoughts and prayers are with you all near the fires. It is so scary.
Colleen (just a 3 miles runner but I love you Cheetahs and Califorina Catheites)

Well, we can't tell, but we think it may be coming a little bit our way, but the smoke seems less than earlier in the day, for what that's worth. We are packed up and we're going to take shifts sleeping in the night so one of us is keeping tabs on things. If we have to leave, my husband will quickly drop the trees that are near the house (if there's time) and turn on the sprinklers that we put on the roof, and we'll get the heck out of here. The good news is that the local fire chief lives right up the hill from us, and his family will keep us informed. Hopefully we won't have to leave, but we're pretty well prepared. It's been a very surreal day....

Beth -

I can tell the winds changed because I can smell the smoke this morning, whereas I could not yesterday (but they could in LA and San Diego over 500 miles away - tells you how strong the winds were yesterday). I'm keeping you in my prayers. If you are evacuated and need anything, PM me. I'm right near you. I can PM you my cell phone number, too.

In watching this AM it seems the winds have died down and there's much more moisture in the air.

Does is seem to be helping Beth and Christine?

Sounds like it has slowed down quite a bit - but Beth are you still in the line of fire for those areas they have to let burn?

Thank you Jacque and Christine! Yes, it's very very smokey this morning, isn't it?! There is absolutely no wind, which is good. Yesterday, the wind was blowing the fire away from us. With no wind will that stay true? I don't know, but it'll be much easier for them to try to get it under control. It was very strange yesterday that although we were pretty close to the fire and we could see tons of smoke, we never smelled anything! Then about 9pm my husband and I both smelled it, and that made us worry. I still think we are going to be very lucky in this and we aren't in real danger. No school for the kids again today. We may be stuck at home again. Funny how on the weekends I just don't want to leave, but when I am sort of stuck here, all I can think about is trying to go anywhere! :)

thank you again, very much, for your offer, Christine!

Happy to hear it seem OK for now. Also that the lack of wind should help with the smoke factor which isn't good either.

Please keep us posted . . . thought I know this isn't going to be the first place you are thinking of spending time at this moment;)

Beth - if it makes you feel any better, we're inundated with smoke in the valley, too. It's even in my office's airconditioning unit as it pulls air in from the outside. My whole office smells like someone has a big wood burning fireplace going. I'll keep you in my prayers. I'm pming you my cell phone - if you need anything - call.

Just thought I'd check in this evening. The fire is still burning, but it's not gaining ground as it did yesterday with the high wind situation we were experiencing. We're even getting a little humidity and there's a slight chance of showers tomorrow. All these weather factors will help the efforts.

Beth, I think you are a lot closer to the fire's origin than I am. I'm about 4 miles as the crow flies on the backside. Yesterday, the air was crystal clear here all day since the wind was blowing everything away from us. This morning, the smoke was pretty thick, even was burning my eyes a little. My boys attend Los Gatos High School and they didn't have them go outside for PE.

12 houses confirmed lost. KRON states 3200 acres burned - although this is the same figure they quoted last night. ??? No estimate of when this thing will be contained.

I hope everyone can go back to their homes soon that have been evacuated and no lives are lost.

Diane

Hi Diane,

I was wondering if we'd hear from you. We experienced the same thing with crystal clear air yesterday up until about 9:00 last night. And yes, so thick this morning! It's looking pretty good now. We finally ventured out in the car late this afternoon -- the road is closed to all but residents. Well, hours later when we came back, the road had a "hard close" on it -- they weren't even letting residents go back home. Fortunately we all know the back ways and we were able to get through that way. Don't know what the reason for the hard close was -- maybe the fire has changed direction (seems unlikely given conditions), maybe a firefighter is hurt and they want the roads really clear to get him/her out, or perhaps most likely is that the sheriff they had stationed at road block down the line had to go chase looters or help with someone who is hurt, because there was no sheriff at the end point where we turn off. Anyway, that's the scoop tonight. I think it's going to be a quiet weekend for us.
