PowerStrike - again

Cathlete
Oh my sore aching glutes, shoulders, lats... yeah, you name it...

I have a martial arts background, and am very particular about my Kick Boxing. For the most part, I despise traditional kick boxing classes - they are BORING!! I like Cathe's because they are intense (really intense if you mix and match sections), but lets face it, her form is not 100%. I still love her, though.

I ordered these on the advice of other board members, and was very very skeptical. I had yet to find a workout that used proper form and keeps my heart rate up there consistantly. Okay, let's get the bad out of the way - the cinametography is pretty bad on these. They try to be artsy, but it's just annoying. But if you can forgive that and the real class atmosphere (reminded me a little of the older Billy Blanks) you will get one heck of a workout.

What I really like is that the punches, kicks and knee smashes are performed with proper form - and they go over that form at the beginning before the class. For a example on a knee smash - just imagine yourself taking both hands and grabbing on to the left shoulder of some guy who's attacking you and driving your knee into his stomach, and you'll know how that's supposed to be executed - they do it right here - from a fighting stance giving you plenty of momentum to get that knee hard into that stomach.

I could finish the workout, but I was tired. I'm in pretty good condition - IMax 3 is a challenge, but very doable.

So, if you are looking for a hardcore workout that makes you feel tough, try one of these. I never thought I'd recommend workouts on VHS, but I will these. HOLY COW! (Oh - and get PowerStrike 1 or 2 - Kathryn says PS 3 is not as tough - and a friend of mine confirmed it).

I was lucky enough to pick up all three of these from ebay last year. The person selling them said they just didn't click with her. Her loss was my gain! I haven't tried PS3 since I've heard here more than once that it is not as tough as the other two but I love PS 1 and 2. The other really great thing about these workouts is that they are low impact.

I Love, Love, Love, Love, Love, Love Love Powerstrikes!
I have all 3 Powestrikes Milleniums plus Powerstrike Advanced #1. They are all great. #3 is not as intense as 1 or 2. I think #2 is most intense.
#3 is still a great workout, and I'm glad I have it in my collection.

I am ending a rotation where I did Powestrike 3-4X a week for about 8 weeks. I've noticed more definitions in my obliques, flatter abs, smaller thighs, and my shoulder muscles have developed signifcantly. As an added bonus, I am able to do the all plank work at the end of Circuit MAx without dropping to my knees and am able to finally do big girl push ups. I couldn't do this before Powerstrikes.

I'm about to start a PowerStrike/Spinerval rotation. After today's workout I absolutely have to. I can definitely see where your shoulder muscles would develope significantly - my shoulders are aching in a way that even the GS series have not been able to replicate.

I just want to go down on my hands and knees (although I'm not quite certain I CAN right now - LOL) and bow to DivaGirl who mentioned these last week, and to all of those "enablers" who encouraged me to buy these. I am so happy I did.

How would you set up this rotation? Switch each day with a different workout? Would you add in strength training/pilates/yoga?

Just curious as it sounds like it would be a great rotation.

Rhonda

Well, I have the TLT's as well, so my routine will be something like:

Day 1: BBBB/Back and Spinervals
Day 2: PowerStrike 1/Shoulders and abs
Day 3: EFM/Chest and Spinervals
Day 4: PowerStrike 2/Biceps and abs
Day 5: SIM/Triceps and Spinervals
Day 6: FYC and cardio of choice.

That makes for a long day, but if you don't want to do the TLT's, simply take those out. Pilates could be subbed for ab days, and yoga to replace any of the TLT's.

I'll probably do this for 4-6 weeks, get bored and totally change it up. Which is how most of my rotations go. LOL

Looks good - I also have the TLTs. I would definitely need to do one in the morning and one in the evening. I will have to think about this. I haven't done any kickboxing in a few months and the spinervals I did one at Christmas time but that was a first in about a year. Since the beginning of the year I have been doing more walking/jogging than anything. Combined with yoga/pilates.
Thanks for the suggestion

Talk about enablers Christine!!!!:) :p

CRAP! Now I am going to have to buy these darn things and I don't even have a VHS hooked up to my workout TV! Not too worry - there are ways around this. Hi-Ho it's off to shopping I go.

Oh! Thank you for the review Christine. I too, have been skeptical of these workouts but now I'm going to go ahead and get them!

*grins sheepishly* I probably should have put a warning at the beginning that the poster has several years of sales under her belt and to take what she says with a grain of salt.

But seriously Rogue, you won't regret it. I am so pysched to have these, that it's killing me not to be able to do the second one tomorrow (my shoulders are so sore right now that I know I won't be punching tomorrow). My favorite before this was CTX Kickbox, KPC High Intensity Drill and CK drills (all at once - it's about 70 minutes), so I've done a lot of punching before and I know how to punch properly - but these get me some how. Maybe I was just so wound this morning that I punched extra hard...

Christine,

What are Spinervals?

Anyhow, I got Powerstrike 3 first - it is on DVD and thought is was great for the form and technique - I really liked it alot - for I am also into martial arts (will test next month for my black belt).

I ended up getting Powerstrike 1 about a month ago (I did hesitate because it is on VHS) - but let me tell you I am absolutely hooked - the audio and the filming is a little irritating - but the workout is a real kick butt one.

The one you just reviewed is that #1 or #2? I have thought about getting #2 - I heard #2 has more punches than kicks (which I do enjoy, too). But I absolutely love the kicks in #1. It seems to me that the warm up in #1 is at the intensity that #3 is at its peak.

So, do you think #2 is as good as #1?

I have TLT DVD's.too, which I love - I just need to know what Spinervals are.

Thank you in advance,

Cheryl

Spinervals are also kick butt. I'm going to do them both at home on my road bike hooked to a trainer, and at the gym on a spin bike. I'm picking up both of his audio workouts.

I don't have Powerstrike or Spinervals but thanks for sharing your rotation Christine. I was wondering how to incorporate more weight work in with the TLT's. I copied this down for future use...maybe this summer when I have more time to workout. What series do you use for the added weight work or do you do that at the gym? I may start this type of rotation only alternating extra cardio one week with extra weight work the next week so I can do the TLT's more often.

I have been *trying* to do a rotation kinda like that: 3 spinervals (2 ABB and 1 hard one), 2 kickboxing and 1 step for cardio. For strength: PUB, ME and L&G. On the other 3 evenings I have barre w/o, yoga or pilates, but give myself permission to cut these out if I'm too tired. I say *trying* because either I or one of my kids has been sick since Jan. I also have found out that my legs are not strong enough to do Legs and Glutes and cardio in the same day (especially not a spinerval or kickbox!). I still have the paper out and when I can get the whole gang well and outta this house , I'm going to do it. I have the powerstrikes on my "to get" list, but since I, ahem , uh, lets say "overindulged" on spinervals, I've cut myself off from buying for awhile. Marnie

Angela - you can sub any cardio for the Spinervals or Powerstrikes... I have all of the exercises from the GS series down on spreadsheets, and I'll take those to the gym sometimes. But for this rotation, what I'll probably do is add 15-20 minutes of the single body part to my work at home. So I'll do BBBB followed by some back work. Then either take the spin class at the gym or use the CD's from Coach Troy the I JUST ordered (and had shipped to my dad's house as he's in Maryland, which is where they're shipped from - so they'll get there when I'm there and I have the added advantage of DH NOT seeing these arrive TOO - oh he's going to kill me!).

Christine,
Crap is right!!! Do you have an extra bedroom I can move into after I buy these?? DH is going to kill me if he sees them. Hmmm....let's see, what day is he traveling to Idaho on business....just maybe I can get them delivered on that day and sneak them into the house without him knowing;).....thinking, thinking...........

Robin

Oh Robin - that's so funny - I will pay more for shipping so that my workout DVD's come when DH is on a business trip... And I still have to get the remaining TLT's! I think he's going to NY soon... *giggles* Oh, I have one sitting at home - FYC (got one every day this week - he's NOT going to be happy!)...

Marnie - cool! We should start a thread and list our progress. I would love to stick to a rotation like this - my backside would be sooo nice!

Cheryl - I'll let you know what I think about 2 once I do it. I'm thinking Sunday morning at dad's house before my bratty sister is up. She thinks she can sleep in because she's going to be away from her 3 kids (all under 4)... Jeez!!!

OH MAN!
You all have me wanting these powerstrike workouts and I hate VHS!
MY poor credit card, hope hubby won't divorce me.....
Thanks guys
Jen

*Does happy dance into thread* GOT HOME BEFORE DH! Picked up my little package with my TLT in it, unwrapped the cellophane and put the DVD on the shelf like it was there all along. *walks away whistling innocently*

Jen - I promise you you won't regret it - these are great!

I was looking into these workouts on Collage Video and I found a PowerStrike workout on DVD - is this not the same? I would love to get a great workout while learning better form!

Thank you -
