Potato chips for breakfast?

OK, far be it for me to criticize moms out there b/c, well, I'm not one. ;-) BUT, I went to the dentist at 8:30 sharp this morning & a woman was walking her 2 kids, about 2 & 4 YO, out the door, both shoving Lays potato chips down their throats as if they hadn't eaten for days. I presume they were on their way to school or daycare. I couldn't help judging her. Just couldn't help it. Wouldn't it be just as easy to give them granola bars or something like that?

And we wonder why our nation is obese. Actually, I guess we don't wonder, we already know. x(

Please don't flame me for this! It's not against my religion to eat potato chips for breakfast, & I wouldn't not vote for someone b/c they ate potato chips for breakfast, 'K? ;-)

This makes me wonder if Lays are better than some cereals or pop tarts....

I do give me kids cereal for breakfast (fruit loops, rice crispies, etc), but I make sure they have 100% juice and a piece of fruit to go with it.

I think some of the cereals could qualify for dessert!!

Hi Laura.

You are funny and I am not going to flame you. :)

I agree that chips for breakfast is not a good thing and I would never do it. Goodness knows I am not anti-junkfood as I treat myself and I give my son dessert after lunch and dinner every day as long as he eats his dinner. He can have some chips, a couple of cookies, 1/2 a donut, etc BUT he NEVER eats that garbage BEFORE a meal, or even worse, AS A MEAL! Yes, there are many other much healthier options that mom could have chosen for an "on the go" meal. ITA with you!!!

Ahhhhhhh, I can only dream of eating chips for bfast. ;-) Seriously, I would love it, but I won't do it. But is it really any worse than say a doughnut? Ummmm, took DH to the airport this am and got DS a doughnut on the way back. Ok not so good but he usually has a healthier bfast. Now if they could make a lays potato chip cereal. Hmmm. Ok, can you tell I have PMS or what?

You have a good point. This woman may feed her children quite healthy 99% of the time but for some unknown reason Laura just happened to catch her when they were getting an unusual "treat". Thanks for posting that!:)

Laura, didn't you know potato chips are the "new" apples & oranges? Duh. Where have you been :p

And ofcourse, where would this thread be with out a wise comment from Miss Smarty Pants Deb over here!:7 :p :7 :p

You know I'm just teasin', girl!:)

Well, potatoes ARE vegetables.

I agree: it's one thing if a grown adult makes the choice to have potato chips for breakfast, but to feed a kid that way? Let's just hope it was a fluke, and that they were on their way to a real meal. (Or maybe, mom promised them a 'treat' if they were good at the dentist's office. Though I'm not in favor of using junk food as a reward for good behavior, lots of people do it.)

Yuck! I love chips, but never for breakfast. We are total cereal lovers at my house. I think dry cheerios would be a better and less messy option. I like to give other moms the benefit of the doubt that this was a fluke!

Nope, never did see it! I was taken aback...completely surprised...just could not believe it! SHOCKED!

As a mom of 3. I try not to judge when I see stuff like that. My girls eat waffles with syrup and stuff that I would not say is great for them for breakfast. But they have fruit and veggies and other stuff throughout the day. I think it is all about balance. If I felt my kids did not get enough to eat for breakfast that day or didn't have time for a proper one, I would probably stuff something in there mouth I know they would eat, just to have something in them, especially before something like a dentist appt. Before I was a mom, I swore that when I had kids they would never eat crap and drink juice. You just do your best. Sorry ladies, I did not mean to preach:)

Susan -

As a mom of 2 I completely agree! Who knows what the circumstances were in that household that morning? Of course, if that mom feeds her kids potato chips TOMORROW morning, too, then I think a trend is definitely starting to develop. ;-)

MMMMMMMMMMM :)

Chips and a big glass (or can) of pepsi. The wonderful memories of when I could eat whatever I wanted and not worry about gaining weight. :-( Yes! I loved that for breakfast on Saturday mornings growing up.

But alas, I have developed much better eating habits in my middle years. And my 6 yr. old and my 15 yr. old are never allowed to eat such things for the first meal of the day. (just don't tell them ok ;-) ) lol

It's amazing how unhealthy the nation is and ads dont make it much better. One of the biggest jokes is Juicy Juice with 100% juice....sugar is sugar. There's a teaspoon of sugar is 4 gram, last time I looked I think a serving of Juicy Juice was 16 grams of sugar per serving (or something close to that) which is basically shoving 4 teaspoons of sugar in your child. Terrible for the teeth!

Yeah, but it is fruit sugar, not sugar that you would mix in your ice tea. I always buy 100% juice for my kids.

Sara

Lowers head...

My kids have on occ. had... cake for breakfast... ice cream compliments of my husband ("it is dairy")... other non-food items... I make sure they wash it down with pepsi... just kidding.

I do agree there are other on-the-go choices.

Just a thought. I remember when my dd was little and I was trying to get her to try healthy foods. Sometimes I would say if you eat ---- [bowl of berries, veggies, yogurt, whatever] then you may have some ------ [whatever junk they are requesting that day] Sometimes the trade is worth your children learning how delicious a certian healthy item really is, and with said trade they will enjoy it in the future without requiring negotiations. Just a thought.
