Popcorn suggestions?

Have you tried one of those old-fashioned, hand-crank popcorn makers (you can get them in aluminum or stainless steel, Whirly Pop is a common brand)? That and a bit of coconut oil make some awesome popcorn! (buy a jar of Orville R's popcorn).

Since this is a regular treat for you, you might want to invest in a popcorn maker like this: http://www.amazon.com/Maxi-Matic-EP...2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1259016323&sr=1-2

That looks neat, Kathryn, but I don't know where I would put it in my apartment, and it looks like it would have to be cleaned regularly.

[I've been eating a bag almost every day for several years now! (Don't even get me started on how useless the FDA is!!)

..I work for FDA, and the Agency really isn't useless - underfunded (until very recently) and overburdened with unfunded mandates. Truthfully, we work very hard for very little.

I agree that the FDA is underfunded, and I do not blame the people who work there at all. I think the government should place more emphasis on food and drug safety. Unfortunately, the FDA has essentially become almost useless to me, because I now have to research everything myself before using it.

Wow, 42 replies for a thread on popcorn! You go Nancy!

I take regular Orville Redenbacher popcorn (comes in a jar), put it in a brown paper bag, fold it, tape it, and microwave it. Then, there's the old-fashion way: popcorn, oil, large pot, over the stove, make sure the top's on! When it's done, I put my own salt/butter on it!

Hee-hee! I like that instruction. It is good for blonde's like me;).

My only problems with doing popcorn the old fashioned way are 1 - I have an electric stove and 2 - I need to buy pots that aren't teflon. Steel pots work the best for me...on a gas stove!

Underfunded as long as it comes to doing their job when it comes to drug makers and big food industry but they have plenty of money to conduct armed raids at naturopathic clinics, vitamin makers and sending "warning" letters to Dr. Weil and the likes to "stop recommending supplements that booste the immune system".

I just want the FDA to stay out of my business because I don't take anything they say seriously anymore.

Glass Bowls

I just use a large glass microwave safe bowl for my popcorn. Be sure to use a dishtowel and not a lid b/c any condensed steam from the popcorn will cause the popped kernels to stick to each other. This works great and eliminates having to buy papers sacks. Also, if you buy "popcorn" salt as opposed to regular (or finely grind some of your own sea salt) this will be so small that it sticks to unbuttered popcorn, or popcorn w/ very little oil.
Sorry, this method still leaves you w/ a bowl to wash, unless you eliminate all oils from the process, and then the bowl isn't really very dirty at all :)

Also, I've always heard that if you keep your popcorn in the fridge, very tightly sealed, that is stays fresh longer, but I'm not sure if there's science to back this up or not. Maybe someone will google it for us!

Happy snacking :)

Good tips, Mattea! I just googled and opinions are varied regarding storage. I think my salt is popcorn salt, but I have to double check.
