Pop Tarts

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone here eats pop tarts? I have heard that they are really bad for you, that they are one of the worst foods you can eat. I really love them and have one for breakfast a couple times a week. I don't understand why they say this about them. They are around 200 calories and I don't think they are all that high in fat so I'm wondering why they have such a bad rep. I know they are high in carbs, but so is a lot of other things. Anyone heard this? Anyone eat them too? I like the plain (with no icing) ones, strawberry is my favorite. I toast it and put a little butter on it (I know that is fattening) they are so good!

Someone can chime in here and correct me if I am wrong, but I think one of the main horrors of Pop Tarts is the fact that they are so "processed." My two children think that they come from the weirdest family in their schools because they aren't allowed to eat Pop Tarts for breakfast. I tell them that they should be thankful to have parents who care enough to make sure they eat a hot, nutritious breakfast. Also, I think that pop tarts are loaded with sugar, probably even the ones without icing. That filling has got to be just like eating a big spoonful of jelly. I know how it is giving up a food you love, though. It's tough. Why not try two pieces of Nature's Own Low Carb bread with some sugar free preserves in the middle? You might find out that you like that just as well, and I'm sure it would be much better for you.

Not an expert here, but it is the processing adn the sugar that bugs me the most about pop tarts. Another alternative is the Quaker brand poptarts that are based with oatmeal. I hear that they are very good, they are more filling and have better ingredients. The next timet that you are in the supermarket, compare labels :)

All that being said, if you like them that much, have them once or twice a week. Everything in moderation! I like many things that are not "the best" for me (or even down-rhgt BAD for me!) and I eat them once in a while.

ABout once a month, I have a couple Pop Tarts cause they are SOOOO YUMMIE!

But I don't have them more than that, cause they are overprocessed, and basically full of fat and sugar. But then again, that's what makes them so good.

This raises another issue to my mind...all the "fat free" products we have on the market these days. Instead of the fat, we are consuming the over processed and nasty carb items. I tell ya, we have to have the most "fat free" items on our grocery shelves and everyone in there has this stuff in their carts, yet we are the FATTEST country in the world!

A few rules I like to follow when shopping: Grab as many items from the periphery of the store and try to avoid the aisles as much as possible. Also, if it has a "sell by" date of the year 2010...might not be a good choice.

Also, everything in moderation! No point in living life if we take ALL the fun stuff away.

Yes, sugar! But are they ever tasty... I'm with the poster who said "everything in moderation." I wouldn't say I'll never eat one again, but I don't buy them. Pop Tarts are also an offender when it comes to trans fats (chemically altered fatty acids). I think it's only like 1.5 gr trans fats per tart, but they are bad for your body plain and simple. Manufacturers put them in to extend the shelf life of their products. Oreos are another biggie. Mmm... oreos... ;-)

Michelle! The strawberry (no icing) with butter is one of my fav snacks! (LOVE how the butter melts on them when they come out of the toaster piping hot. BOY, I'M A BIG HELP, EH?) I don't buy them anymore though! :-( I eat the whole box if I do. I am not the cleanest eater but I am trying. But, like they say, you have to eat a favorite snack every now & then. Just wanted to share your exact thoughts! :)

I love Amy's Pop Tarts. They are in the freezer section. I think they are really good and they are all natural.

I know they are bad for you...but I cant help myself sometimes. I eat a couple per month (more than my son).

I keep these for my grandchildren. I love brown sugar cinnamon ones so leave those at the store. Ah Debbie, why did you have to mention hot ones with butter? I never tried butter on them but bet is yummy. Now the temptation is there. We have raspberry, incredibles, chocolate chip, and hot fudge sundae. Kids choice:D

My all time fav is the chocolate Pop Tarts with the vanilla cream filling. I cannot, I repeat, I cannot buy them or I would eat the whole box!

I will get some once in a while for my little guy, just tried the new cinnamon roll ones this week just to give them a try. Otherwise I don't have them in the house.

I bought frosted blueberry for my husband last week. I ate one package, which equals two tarts. This week he said he wanted frosted strawberry. I dont like those very much, so I havent eaten any of them.

My favorite flavor is the brown sugar cinnamon. The cinnamon roll sounds really good too, but I wont buy them for me, too bad and fatty.

My husband breaks the sides off of them and only eats the middle. That gets on my nerves because he wastes about half of it. Sometimes I will see the break off pieces in the garbage but I dont say anything.

Love,

Madonna

Yum.....but they are so lacking in any nutritional value. I usually eat a whole wheat english muffin with a Tbsp of peanut butter for breakfast.

Every once in a blue moon the urge for a Smore's pop tart gets the best of me. All warm and toasty with a glass of cold skim milk....yum....:)

I never liked them, not even when I was a kid, but DH brings them to work everyday. He never has time to eat breakfast so he throws them in his lunch bag and munches on them while driving to work. I really should fix some healthy portable breakfast foods for him to take. I'm beginning to feel guilty!

I love pop tarts and only buy the flavors that don't tempt me for my DH and kids. Any of the ones with chocolate can't come in the house. I always tell my kids that the store is out of the chocolate flavors. If they come with me to the store, they are always excited to see that there are chocolate flavored ones on the shelf! :p

The S'mores are great, the chocolate with vanilla frosting, chocolate fudge, chocolate chip cookie dough - yummy! :9
