Pilates equipment......

I am wondering if there is anyone on the forum who actually owns the Pilates table-like exerciser, and if so did you start out doing Pilates this way, as opposed to mat work ? How different is Pilates using the bench than using a mat ?

I am wondering because recently I read that mat work is a lot more harder than using the Pilates bench/table/equipment (whatever it is called !), and Pilates teachers recommend that you start off using the equipment before moving on to mat work.

So, anyone out there a Pilates equipment user ?

Thanks

Anna :D

Anna,

I have a pilates reformer (or "Performer" is what the one I have is called). I got it from Nordic Track a long time ago. I never really liked it.I always liked mat work better. But I don't think I ever really gave it or pilates a chance. I feel like I can control my moves better with matwork and that I get more of a benefit from the moves. My Performer is gathering dust under a bed. :-(

I wish I could make myself do pilates regularly, but I always end up going back to the floorwork from Firm Volume I and PS floor. I know pilates is good for you, but I just can't make myself keep it up. But then again, I know a lot of people that love it and swear by it!

Anna,

The Reformer provides adjustable resistance, so I wouldn't agree that mat work is more difficult. You can add resistance during mat work with circle, balls & bands, but it's not significant.

Some more advanced movements are easier to learn on the Reformer. But there are also lots of Reformer exercises that can't be done on a mat. If I had the funds, I'd do at least 1 Reformer session each week with an experienced instructor.

You'll hear differing opinions, but my first Pilates instructor recommended taking a few mat classes before investing in Reformer sessions. Except for people with some serious back issues, it was easier to introduce them to different positions & modifications on the Reformer in a private session.

Thankyou for your replies,

They have given me a renewed interest in Pilates. It is nice to know that Pilates can still be done and enjoyed as mat work, remaining to be effective.

Anna :)
