personal question, sorry!

I am wondering if anyone else does not have a monthly cycle anymore since working out & eating healthy? I haven't had one in a couple years & my doctor seems to think it b/c I workout so much but from reading different posts on here about "that time of the month" and what's in your purse it seems like most still have it... I am just curious if anyone else has not had one? Sorry if too personal.

Hey, Jen. Mine has reduced to really nothing, except for the first day. I don't have PMS, never did really. But I do get hormonal headaches. I'd venture to say that you're pretty low in BF and that's why you've stopped menstrating. You workout machine!!

Even when you were heavier, did you have bad periods? Or pretty light?

I stopped having my cycles 3 years ago at 37. But for me it was premature ovarian syndrome. My ovaries don't work anymore (well technically they can "kick in" sometimes. I was having hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, difficulty concentrating and moodiness. My blood work showed an elevated FSH and low estrogen levels.

There are other things that can cause amenorrhea (no period). Thyroid disorders and even being on the birth control pill can cause it among other things.

Here is an intersting article on the female athlete triad:

If you fit into this category this is a serious problem and needs medical intervention.

Shirl -Yep before I worked out I'd have one every month!

Terri -Hey there, just e-mailed you! Before I worked out I'd have a period every month and I used to get horrible cramps too-to the point where I'd have to start taking naproxine the day before my period would start - i'd take like 3 every 4-6 hours and I'd have to do that through like the 3rd day of my period just to be able to function & be able to go to work.

I do go to my doctor yearly and I am very honest with her about not having one & she seems to think it is okay so I haven't been too worried about it but the longer it goes the more I wonder so just thought I'd ask. I am sure if I were trying to get pregnant or something, which I'm single and not trying at all thank goodness, I bet I wouldn't be able to.

Catherine - Thanks, I just read that & I don't think it applies to me, I do workout for an hour a day/6 days a week but I eat about 1500-1700 calories a day and on weekends probably more!

I haven't had any bone/muscle injuries the entire 3 years I've been working out, with the exception of a pulled groin muscle about a month ago but with taking a few days off of working out it got better and hasn't bothered me since.

When I first started working out on a regular basis I lost weight but for the past year or so my weight has stayed about 130 and I am 5'5" so my doctor says that is right in line with what my weight should be.

I've had very irregular periods for my entire adult life and my doctors have always wanted me to go on meds to start a period if I haven't had one for 3 months. The reason that they don't want me to go too long is because it's important to shed the uterine lining. If you're not menstruating, you could have a build-up in the uterus and that could lead to endometrial cancer. Please ask your doctor about this.

Actually no my thyroid hasn't been checked, I think I will ask her to check it next time I am there though. My mom has a thyroid problem & is on medicine for it but she has underactive thyroid which causes weight gain. My doctor is also my mom's doctor so she knows it runs in the family and has said that we need to keep an eye on it...would you think though w/ me not having a period it would be underactive or overactive??

I will for sure have to have it tested then, you'd think my doctor knowing my mom's history and knowing I don't have a period would just automatically test me. Thanks Catherine!

Hey Jen...I have started having much lighter periods in the past couple of years...but I am also peri-menopausal...It looks like from your pics you are nowhere close to that! I suppose as long as you are not looking to get pregnant the lack of a period is no big deal...but if you have had your body fat checked and it is not extemely low I would be a little worried about not having a period at all. It sounds like for your height, your weight is great, but not extremely low...So maybe you need to seek some other advice...

Just my 2 cents!

Jen,
ever simce I hit 35, my periods have gotten a lot lighter and less frequent. I went to the dr. and I was put on thyroid medicine and that has helped a lot. I have the beginnings of hyothyroidism. I have my periods now every 28 days exactly. Definitley get it checked out. I am kind of suprised that your doctor was not more concerned about it. I think just because you eat healthy and exercise that that should not interfere with the cycle, unless your body fat is super super low.

In the last few of months my period has gotten lighter than usual and I am 132lbs. at5'6" with hypothyroidism. Usually when my medicine isn't the right dose I have a weird cycle. Sometimes I'll have more than one period and sometimes I'll go longer in between that's when I know I have to get my meds readjusted. it would be a good idea to check your thyroid.

Mine has gotten very light. I usually only have 1 day. My doctor seems to think it is ok also. Personally as long as the doc is ok, I am happy with it.

Hi Jen,

Since I have been working out I have noticed a big difference in my cycle. I use to have bad cramps and they went away. Now I only get my period a couple of times of year. It goes away in the summer and then starts back in the fall. It only lasts about 3 days. I'm also 45 so this may have something to do with it. My twin sister Jean, who works out are like I do has a similiar cycle. I have 2 older that are 47 and 48 and they never skip a period.

I only have one day of it now. The thing that sucks is I have 1-2 weeks of pms only to have one day. My doc says that's what happens as we get older.
