People undermine working out at home

Cathlete
DH and I went to a party last night and we were talking to this lady. She was telling us that she was a size double zero and was always in music videos and all that before she had here child. Then she said she needed to go to a gym and work the weight off. DH told her that I was an exercise freak and she suddenly asked me what gym I went to. I told her I worked out at home. Then she looked at me as if I was crazy, giving me one of those you've got to be kidding looks. Then she looked at my "body by cathe" figure and said that I must have been born like this; no way I could get these results from a video. I promptly told her about the different varieties of exercise videos, but she wasn't intrested. She would get her results the right and proper way. Why do people downplay home workouts without even looking into them properly? It's infuriating.

i haven't been here in a while(busy with kids out of school) but read this post and just had to add my rant to it. sorry to put it this way but what a bitch. i get respect for my result and ppl are surprised to hear that i do it at home and it mostly comes from videos. i think some have been fed this crap at the gym and they are sticking with that mentality. and who says working out home isn't right or proper?!?!?! its certainly working for me as i am sure its working for you as well. here my neighbors have a saying for a gal like her, HATER.

She sounds very self-involved.

Even my chiropractor was a bit surprised, it seemed, when I said I worked out at home. At first, he then assumed I had a workout machine/station, and was even more surprised (impressed?) that I just had dumbells and barbells (oh, yea, and all that other 'small equipment,' like medicine balls and stability balls, etc.)

It's always easier to come up with something to say after the fact, but a good "Oh, yea, I guess some people can't get motivated enough on their own to workout at home, so they might not get their best results."

Look on the bright side: since you don't go to the gym, there's no chance you'll have to spend your exercise time with this woman!

I don't get offended anymore, I just chalk it up to ignorance. Most people, when they think workout video, think of Richard Simmons or Susan Powter. They have no experience with the wide variety that is out there, especially Cathe! And then, even when you open their eyes to it..if they are so willing, they don't want to do her tapes anyway cuz they are TOO DAMN HARD for most people.

Just know that you work out at home harder than 99% of the people yackin' at the gym.;)

I think Kathryn has it right and that much of it has to do with motivation. Just like I can't understand my bootcampers wanting to do their workout in a park every morning for $10-15 a day every morning M-F for five weeks, they can't understand my working out at home!

To each her own, I guess, and bless us all for being motivated (or rich enough, LOL!!) to use our bodies.

I think if my bootcampers saw my living room/gym area, they would be even more confused, LOL!!!}( :7

So you have a living room/gym as well? LOL! (Though sometimes, mine is more like a gym/living room!).

I don't bother much telling people what I do to stay in shape. It always weirds people out when I tell them that they can get a complete workout program at home; it also always weirds people out that you can get a superior, vigorous workout in the pool that goes way beyond traditional swimming.

In fact, it's become a minor species of vanity for me that I'm in superior physical shape in all major categories (cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength / endurance / mass fitness, overall body composition and bone density) precisely from home Cathe workouts and my own aqua workouts.

OP, all you need to say is, "You paddle your canoe, toots, and I'll paddle mine."

So you just have to imagine all the island decorations gone... but this photo is taken from my front door, right as you walk in!!! LOL- do you think I mind being surrounded by workout stuff?? NOT A CHANCE!

I think you nailed it, Janice - most people think of exercise videos as being filled with lots of spandex and heavily made-up "hair bears," as we used to call 'em in the 80s. :) They don't know how far things have come - esp. with the beauty of chaptered DVDs. Working out at home has never been more convenient or cost-effective. I've been debating whether or not to join a gym lately, and I've concluded that I don't really *need* to at this time. I really believe that Cathe has me working out harder (and w/ correct form) than I would be if I were on my own at the gym. It really is like having a personal trainer in your living room.

That being said, when I've been asked lately what I've been doing to buff up, I've also gotten some skeptical looks/responses. But it really doesn't matter to me. They can think what they what they think. I know it's working, I feel great, and the results speak for themselves.

By the way, that woman sounds like an idiot. Who has to announce at a party that they were a double 00 and a former music video star? I'da been tempted to snap her in the head with a Dynaband.

ETA: lol about Joanna's post. I didn't see yours while I was typing mine. Guess we both had a bit of a violent reaction to that! :)

You would think that just by looking at the results, they'd think of at-home workouts in a different way. I mean, what better "proof" that it works than by looking at the fantastic shape you guys are in?

I still find these attitudes whenever I talk about working out at home. It's annoying, but I just tell myself it's their loss that they haven't tried the Cathes of the world (not that there is any other :))! And I agree with what someone posted above--if they ever want to give you grief again, try handing them IMAX3 or Boot Camp or something, and let's see how they fare!!

I was thinking that, too, but would you really want to lend your beloved workouts to someone like that in the first place (who would probably 'lose' them, or damage them in some way.

I find it quite insulting that she didn't believe you. I think I'd be just as sceptical about her being a double 0 (oh, a nasty zinger comes to mind: "when you said you were a double zero, were you refering to your IQ?").

LOL...Good one, Kathryn! :)

That's why I don't bother to tell anyone about my "obsession" with video fitness. If they ask if I workout I just tell them I have a gym at home. No one ever asks any further questions so I've never had to elaborate.

I joined dh's gym so I could occasionally use the pool - and got a free intro training session. The trainer I met with was super nice, but when he asked me what I've been doing he told me that videos weren't strength training but were really cardio. I didn't get a chance to say they were Cathe dvds ... then the trainer next to him about bit off my head going on for 5 minutes about how lame they were and how Richard Simmons wasn't the answer, etc., etc. He was the type where it was just better to bite my tongue than get into an argument with ... anyway, if Richard Simmons does help some people get off the couch, what's the harm??

Gwarrrr ... needless to say, that was THE last session w/them, free or not.

I have had the same experience when people ask what I do to work out. They are clueless as to what quality home workouts are out there obviously. I also get the "isn't boring just standing in front of your tv, doing the same workouts over and over?" I actually get tired of explaining/defending it. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one.

A very simple reply would be, "Miss Snooty 00, you can't agrue with results. Period, case closed, nuff said."

Oh geez, why do you care? Seriously ... you know what Cathe's workouts have done for you and others on here so why do you care what this total stranger thinks? Just think of her trying to do a Cathe workout and falling flat on her face in the first ten minutes. I will never understand why people think their way is the only "right" way when they haven't even tried something else. She's probably like this in other areas of her life as well. You'll never see her again so just laugh it off.
