I still have not read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See, which I heard about on this board. I know that a lot of you really liked it though. I did just finish her newest book called Peony in Love.

Has anyone else read this book? What did you think?

I'm currently reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and cannot put it down! Did you like Peony in Love?

I LOVED Snow Flower, it's one of my favorites. I've picked up Peony twice browsing at B & N, only to put it back. What did you think of it? I'm a historical fiction addict. I keep trying to read other things, but keep running back to my addiction. I just finished the Kitchen Boy by Robert Alexander. Another fantastic book and it has a slight twist of an ending.

I'd love to hear more reviews on Peony. I've just started Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which revolves around 9/11. Is Peony sad? I may have to put a funny book in between if it is. I love reading book reviews!!!!! :)

Another historical fiction lover here! I'm curious about the Peony reviews too. I'll be adding to my list at the library!

I took Peony in Love out of the library, but had to return it unread, since I had started re-reading the Harry Potter series. It's on my list though. I loved Snow Flower.

I loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I'd like to read Peony in Love, too, and it's on my list, which is very, very long -- lol! I don't care too much for contemporary fiction but Lisa See has a gift, IMHO.

So Karin, what did you think of Peony in Love? I'll tell you, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan would be a tough act to follow;)

LOVED Peony in Love, read it on vacation at my parents' house and had to RUSH through the last 1/4 of it b/c we were leaving the next day.

Very VERY good, but please note I have not read any other of her books, I can't wait to do so based on P in L.

Very satisfying read.

Ok, since you guys asked for my opinions, I will give them.

I was very excited to read this book because I heard such good things about Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Also, the kind of books that I really like to read are of the historical fiction genre.

I am totally on the fence about this book and wanted to see what everyone else thought. This book is about a teenaged girl named Peony who falls head over heels in love. This is basically what the book is centered around. It shows how her definition of love changes as she gets older. I don’t really want to say anymore about what happens though.

There are some parts of this book that I really liked, but generally I would say it was mediocre at best. I thought it was kind of silly and honestly I am not one of those gals that likes to read a whole book about being in love. I am just not that romantic. I am making it sound like a fluffy book, which it isn’t but I just wasn’t into the subject matter that much. I also thought it got a little long towards the end of the book and really wanted it to be over with. Am I being overly critical? Probably, but I have high expectations for books :).

If you guys read it, I would love to hear what you think! I don’t want to say too much and ruin it though. I would really love to discuss it. You guys have to move it to the top of your list :D.

What exactly is Snow Flower and the Secret Fan about? I still think that I am going to read that one.

Karin, I think you should definitely read SN&thSF. It was probably one of the best books I've ever read and I am a a picky reader. The book was about a relationship between two women set in China in the mid 1800's. The relationship is a special arrangement that is supposed to supercede that of family or spouses, it is a pairing of sorts. Over time there are things that develop both personally and externally between the two women that are life changing for both of them. It hard to go into without giving the story away but you should definitely read it. I thought about that book for weeks after I read it and it's one I'll definitely read again.

Peony in Love did not sound interesting to me so I'll probably pass on this one.

Tess, thanks for the description of The Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I will still keep it on my list of things to read, especially since you liked it and you are picky about books too :).

Tess gave an excellent synopsis of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I loved it, too, and I don't normally go for contemporary fiction -- historical or not.

After reading several reviews of Peony in Love I've decided I probably wouldn't like it.

I just finished SN&tSF and LOVED it!!! Just wondering, though, if PiL is the sequel? Peony was Snow Flower's granddaughter, so is this picking up where the first left off?

Oh wow, I didn't know that Peony was Snow Flower's granddaughter. Her grandmother is a character in the book, but I don't think she is referred to as Snow Flower. I also don't think it is a sequel.
