Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/W 1/10

Hi everyone--

This morning I did RS with 1 lb. gloves (48:00). Definitely made it more challenging to wear the gloves.

Deb, I hope the insurance adjusters don't try to minimize the coverage for your loss. I don't blame John for being skittish. I would be too because of how quickly it happened and the airbags going off.

Lori, that was one very long day for you. I bet you will like the Cronin books. It was definitely a bit tricky driving home yesterday. Just enough snow to make it slick on the roads. Very cold here today.

Valerie, Deb is right about selling the dvds. You would easily recoup your money if you sell them individually. My DH has a similar problem--a cracked tooth beneath a crown. Not sure what he wants to do about it. When I finally decided to have braces in my 40s, I had to have two teeth pulled. Perfectly fine teeth, but I had an underbite and crowding. I don't recall any swelling or even that much pain. I think the reason for no awards for Spotlight may be that it was an ensemble cast. Stanley Tucci, Michael Keaton, and Mark Ruffalo had the most substantial roles, but no real 'lead'.

Judy, I Shadow is better and it's nothing serious.

Hi to Josie!

Hi Ladies,

Did not ride on Sunday because we had had some rain the night before and the ride was canceled. I ended up staying home in my PJ's and stumbled on the movie Valley of the Dolls while channel surfing :). I went spinning on Monday, ran for 40 minutes on Tuesday and Karina came back and today it was a spin day.

Judy, hope that Chino and Shadow get better. Glad that you did not have too much damage .

Deb, so happy that your DH is doing fine. Accidents happen so fast and people ate so frazzled that its hard to remember things. Hope that you get a quick resolve.

Valerie, I feel so sorry for your DH. I know what he is going through, my teeth have been a disaster my whole life.

Lori, you are a good wife :).

Garance, the movie The Hateful Eight was not good at all in my opinion. It was two hours and 47 minutes with no intermission.

Josie

Good evening ladies!

Today was a rest day. No workout at lunch either. Heavy package day so everyone pitched in and we feel we got a workout.

Deb...I certainly understand why you are not feeling the workouts after what happened. The ladies so far seem to be liking the Barre Challenge. Tomorrow's workout is supposed to be an upper body but the one planned may be a bit challenging for the ladies. Do not want to demotivate them so I told them we will be subing in the Cathe band workout I made up a while ago.

Valerie...I feel your husbands pain. That happened to me years ago. Seal broke on a crown and there is no way of telling how much decay was going on. Ended up with a crown lengthening where they cut way some of the gum to expose more tooth for the crown to adhere too. Was horrible. I am sure they do things differently now. This was about 30 years ago.

Lynda...I am looking forward to reading the book. I just finished what I was reading today so I'll be starting tomorrow. Yes! Adding 1lb weights to the workout certainly changes things. I sometimes wear them during a cardio or step workout too. We received about 3 inches of snow last night. My poor little Nilla was freezing after letting her out this morning. I felt so bad for her I took a heating pad and let her lay on it for a while. I think she liked it a little too much. She was cute and I am a good Mommy. :)

Josie.. Awesome staying in your pajamas!! Valley of the Dolls is with Sharon Tate? I have never seen it but have always wanted too. Need to look this up. Oh that is so disapointing to hear about Hateful Eight. That stinks. Glad Karina is feeling better.

Hi to Judy!!!!

I am not a big fan of Quentin Tarantino. I realty loved True Romance, one of my favorite movies, but I pretty much avoid QT's stuff now. I'll skip Hateful Eight. DH can watch if he wants but I won't waste my time.

I am not bragging here, but my family has decent teeth. we do routine maintenance, brushing, flossing, regular check ups, and we are OK. DH has teeth from hell. no matter what he does, it goes south. I got braces when I was older, like Lynda. I was mid fifties. that was the first time I'd had any "difficulties" but I did OK. I didn't need extractions, and have only lost wisdom teeth early on. teeth needed to be spaced better and aligned. it was amazing how much nicer they looked. it took 3.5 years because they didn't move quickly, and I won't say it was easy. it was a tough process.
DH is awful. his 2 sisters have the same issues. anyway, he is doing better tonight but it was a rough day. Lynda, hope your DH has a good outcome. DH .......his tooth disintegrated, had to cut it out in pieces. his teeth get infected, disintegrate, terrible, awful. neither parent kept their teeth very long. they didn't take care though. I can't believe how much $$ we've spent trying to keep it working, and he flosses, brushes, reg check ups, the whole 9 yards.
today I did TTM and icy core 2. ( zero sound problems on this one) I found TTM worked the areas my therapy is working without squats and lunges. think I will do this one regularly for a while. it's kind of hard...doesn't seem like it should be, when you aren't moving much, but things like the ball roll ins may be reminding me tomorrow. like barre work. I didn't care for Core 2. seemed like a lot of little fussy moves that didn't work anything very well. didn't think it was hard, just "choppy". I like core 1 from x train best.

I remember the book Valley of the dolls...Jacquelin susann? I don't think I saw the movie. a blast from the past!
"Frazzled" is the right word Josie. everyone knows what happened but describing step by step clearly is another thing entirely.

Good morning & Welcome to Winter! :)

Lots of snow last night and more to come today. I wouldn't care if we didn't have to drive into the "snow belt" for the dog show today. Hope it is ok and we don't have to turn back.

Valerie, hope your DH is feeling better today. That had to be a horrible experience for him ( and you!). Besides good dental practices, I think a lot of how your teeth are is in the genes. My brother and I have great teeth, we got them from my Mom. My Dad had awful teeth, had to have all top removed and a full plate. I only have had 2 fillings, and nothing else ever done. John took out 2 wisdom teeth, only because he said they are better taken out before they erupt into an issue.

Lynda, maybe next time I do Rockm I will try it with the gloves too. I am almost done with A Place to Call Home. Have you had a chance to investigate what other good British shows may be on Acorn? Might as well use as much as I can for the full 30 days. I looked for a couple of shows that are no longer available on Prime, ( The Vicar of Dibley was one) but could not find them. I probably won't continue it.

Josie, great workouts this week! Wow, Valley of the Dolls....that is a blast from the past! I remember reading the book and the movie.....scandalous for the time.

Lori, I have been meaning to ask...what are the heavy packages and why only once in a while? Yes, I am being nosy! :). Would ICE Chiseled Upper body be too difficult for the Ladies? Poor little Nilla, I bet the snow was over her head! Nice "Mommy" to put her on a heating pad.

Hi Judy!

Dog show today, wish me luck!

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Shadow is much better. I think she had the same thing that Chino had a couple of weeks ago. It only lasted a few days.

Tuesday I did Low Impact Sweat 2, Icy Core 2, and TTM. Yesterday was a rest day. DH and I are fighting an upper respiratory virus that has been going around. Last week I was in CVS and the cashier was coughing and hacking like crazy :( I think I got it from him and I gave it to DH.

Valerie- I agree with you about Icy Core 2. I think the XTrain cores and Core Max are more challenging and a better core workout. Also, TTM seems like a physical therapy session to me. I will be doing it regularly too. I'm sorry about your DH. My DH has some dental problems too and I know how miserable it can be. I hope he feels better today.

Deb-Good luck with the dog show! I hope you don't have any problems with the weather.

Josie-great job with your workouts! I remember Valley of the Dolls too.

Lynda- It gets really dry here in the winter too. I'm so glad that I don't have to use room humidifiers anymore.
I like doing RS with the 1 lb gloves. It takes the intensity up a notch.

Lori-That's cute about Nilla and the heating pad. You are a good Mommy!

I'm going to try to do a workout today, will check back in later.

Judy

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. he's better today. still another 10 days, and soft food. the last time he had this done, the membrane came out and all had to be redone. it was also an upper tooth so he is being super careful.
Deb, yes, that's me too. I forget how many fillings I have, maybe 3 or 4? since old silver amalgams are gone, it's hard to tell. I've had few issues other than too crowded, leaning. the braces took care of that. they were able to file tooth inner edges down and give me more room without extracting. but DH...OMG. he and one sister have almost identical problems.

I'm pleased I 'm not sore this morning.... thought those ball roll-ins would get me. apparently my therapy has toughened up the glutes and hams. I'll do more indoor workouts while DH recovers. maybe RS again. no gloves yet. and TTM. Judy, yes, when I was doing it, it felt like therapy to me. It struck me how much easier it is to have a workout all arranged for you ... with the therapy moves, I forget exercises, lose count, no specific order. It's so much easier to load a disk and follow along on a routine all worked out for you. I wish I liked Icy core 2. better, this way I have to swap disks at the end to xtrain.

Judy, you and Lori amaze me with multiple workouts in a day. I have time, I just don't do more... though I could. I have no problem with long rides or hikes, but seem to wimp out after an hour at home.

so sad to hear Alan Rickman died. I LOVED him. I'd listen to him read a phone book!. cancer too, 69, just like David Bowie. guessing they were both smokers and lung cancer got them? I am only guessing but David Bowie was pictured many times with a cigarette in hand.

Good afternoon ladies!

No workout this morning. Chester had something going on last night, barking and crying. He seemed better when I left this morning but I am really worried so going to be leaving work early to check on him. If he is well then perhaps I'll fit in today's Live Ice Metabolic class.

Valerie...yes very sad about Alan Rickman. Loved him in the Harry Potter movies. Glad your DH is a little better today. I too have been around the block with dental work. Not someing I am proud of but doing my best to keep them. Glad you like TTM.

Deb... Think you would like RmSm with light weights. Makes a great upper body/core workout. Every Wednesday our office ships packages to our 88 restaurants. They are usually filled with payroll and training materials. Sometimes (like yesterday) we send out marketing materials (menus) that can be heavy and bulky so we certainly get a workout. I usually gather up a team of 8 people and we are done in less than an hour. It actually gets very comical. I my ladies woul like CUB. I will make up a premix for them but will need to take out all the bear crawls. they do not like a lot of planks so I try and keep the planks to a minimum.

Judy..yes a great workout indeed! Glad you too are enjoying TTM. So glad Shadow is better. I hate when I am out shopping and the cashier is hacking like you mention. No way to avoid it. Hope you and DH are better soon.

Lynda...is your office complete yet? I think you mentioned you had a few things still going on.

Josie...I finally mailed out the Zumba DVD's today! Let me know when you receive them. They were the first set of DVD's when Zumba first came out. Still fun though. Just not for me. Enjoy!

Have a great afternoon all!

Hi everyone--

This morning I did the Metabolic workout (47:47).

Deb, I finished the DM series and I was happy for the way it ended. Now I can start A Place to Call Home. Good luck on the dog show and wishing you a safe trip there and back.

Valerie, that must have been awful for your DH if they had to get the tooth out in chunks. I loved Alan Rickman too. He is hilarious in Galaxy Quest and was the perfect Snape. I even loved him as the romantic lead in Sense and Sensibility opposite Kate Winslet. I will have to check, but I don't think True Romance is by Tarantino. Love the ending of that film--a hilarious shootout.

Lori, I'm sure winter is hard on little Nilla. You will have to tell me how you like The Passage.

Josie, they didn't give you the 10 minute intermission?? Did you see it in 70mm?

Judy, I agree with Valerie--don't know how you manage to do multiple workouts. I pat myself on the back for doing one every day. I probably should have done two today because I had lunch out with friends and indulged in lobster mac and cheese. Couldn't eat it all, but it was so good and so rich.

Lynda you're right about True Romance .....Tarantino wrote the screenplay but tony scott directed it. I knew I associated QT with it somehow. I thought the cast must have had a ball making that film.
I always recognized Rickman instantly. I didn't see any harry potter movies so missed those roles.

ETA a workout at PT this morning. then later I did 20 on the elliptical and core 1 from xtrain. actually turned out to be a decent day with a lot of variety.

Good morning & Happy Friday!

The dog show was a bust, neither dog qualified, but the weather was good so the ride there and back was uneventful. Kylee did all the exercises, ( not pretty mind you), but blew the last one. Tomorrow is another try. The insurance adjuster called John's car a total loss, so he will be getting what we paid for it back. I guess we will be car shopping again soon. He wants to get the exact same car, color, model etc. He said besides the guardian angel that was watching over him, the Subaru saved his life. I agree.

Judy, glad Shadow is better...they are inside cats right? how would they catch a cold? I agree with others, not sure how you and Lori can do double workouts!

Valerie, funny, I did not get sore from TTM either, but then again, I did a premix without the ball stuff. You should show your PT person TTM and see if you can use that instead of those regular exercises. I know what you mean about forgetting some of them, not doing in order etc. I did the same with my back PT and even recently when I was doing them for my hand. I had wished there was a DVD to watch instead.

Lori, poor Chester, I hope he is ok today. Maybe his ear bothering him?

Lynda, how we have to see if there will be a season 8 of Doc Martin! Last night I watched The Manners of Downton Abbey. It's about 50 minutes, on Prime....a look into how they make sure all is historically correct on the filming of Downton....it was really interesting, from the clothes to setting the tables, how they act etc. Anyone who is hooked on Downton would really like it.

Hi Josie!

Taking John to work, then I have a DR appointment, and going to try to get my hair cut/colored today.

Any plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Lori hope Chester is Ok and having a bad day. I took my kitty in today for annual shots. there were several older dogs waiting, I was reminded of how difficult it is when things stop going well.

I hate it when people are sick and you get exposed, but most can't afford to take a week off. I keep hand sanitizer in purse and car. I assume all public surfaces are contaminated.... cart handles, countertops, pens... I make sure I don't touch my face, and use sanitizer after. I've made a routine of it. I've greatly reduced the number of head colds I've gotten. It really makes a difference. rubbing your eyes or nose transfers viruses. if you don't touch your face, you have a very good chance of avoiding a cold.

I take back what I said about "not getting sore". the last 2 days of assorted "small move" exercises has got me feeling some discomfort. those floor exercises get you in little spots, not usually big muscles. PT wants me to continue doing their moves, working into squats and lunges. I will mix in Cathe as long as I don't get too tired of similar moves.

DH is doing better but still staying quiet. He doesn't want the packing and membrane to get dislodged like last time. he can't take NSAIDS, a real bummer. he gets stomach discomfort immediately. so he's stuck with Tylenol. Luckily the weather is crummy, gray and raining. yesterday was lovely out but we couldn't do anything. the weekend looks wet and gray but 45-50 range so we can maybe do an easy hike. I miss being able to mt or road bike, but another week..

Deb, good news on the car. too bad the doggies were being doggies! I keep a list of exercises PT wants me to do but , it's easier to follow a DVD. he showed me how to tape yesterday. it helps with squats and lunges if my knee cap is held out of the way. I should be able to do it myself, and will be able to do more moves without discomfort. we are working thru "The Killing". Does not move fast. really, it doesn't rain that much here.

The Oscar nominees were a bit of a surprise. I didn't read anything good about the Mad Max one and now it's a "best pic" nominee? Reviews described it as endless road chases.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Bootcamp (44:41). I do Amanda's mods on some of these and I don't elevate my step beyond 6 inches.

Lori, how is Chester's ear--is that what is bothering him?

Deb, I'm pretty sure I read that this was the last season of DM. Not sure where things could go anyway, unless they get into another major misunderstanding. I will check out the DA documentary. It sounds interesting. That is great news about the car. The Subaru ads are all about love and it sounds like John would agree with their sentiment.

Valerie, I watched the Mad Max film and cannot, for the life of me, figure out why it is nominated. The cinematography is pretty spectacular at times, and Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy are convincing warriors, but it's just a lot of post-apocalyptic mayhem. I just read Anthony Lane's New Yorker reviews of The Hateful Eight and The Revenant. Very negative on the first, and extremely skeptical of the second. He doesn't think di Caprio really grows very much as a result his suffering, and the suffering is so gruesome that an audience may well wonder if it can survive watching the film. I don't know if I want to see either one. I think I am getting less and less able to watch film violence or suffering. I stayed away from Room and I could barely survive Twelve Years a Slave and Unbroken. I do want to see Brooklyn and the Wall Street film (can't remember the title--The Big Short?) about the housing bubble crisis.

Not sure if I will go to a film this weekend or not.

Good evening ladies!

This morning I did Ice low impact 1& 2. No workout with the ladies today.

Chester seems to be doing well. Boy did he scare us the night before and yesterday. When I got home I immediately made an appt for 7pm. His balance seemed off and tilting his head and not himself at all. My DH came home and agreed he was off but thought we should give it a night and see how things go. We did and he seems to be his usual crazy self today. I guess older dogs can have a bad day like us. He does have a follow up appt on Wed for his ear. We will mention his symptons he just experienced as this makes sense if his ear was bothering him.

Deb...like Valerie said...dogs can just be dogs! Well at least the ride was nice. I can see why John wants to get the same car after what he just went through. I would love to watch the Manners of Downton Abbey. Thanks for mentioning this!

Valerie...I feel for your DH. Tylenol does nothing for me. Hope it is taking the edge off of things. I saw Mad Max and agree with Lynda. Would never had picked this one for Best Picture?? Very strange.

Lynda...my DH still wants to see Hateful Eight. I am trying to talk him out of it. I have no idea about the di Caprio movie. Haven't heard anything about it. Loving The Passage. Boy it just sucked me right in at the very beginning.

Tomorrow, I am going to start to paint the kitchen. We have about a 10 inch strip above the cabinets that I am painting cranberry then the rest of the kitchen is a really nice grey we picked out. I am on my ipad right now and unable to post pictures. Tomorrow I'll make it a point to sign on using my laptop so I can post a picture of the new countertops and backsplash.

Hi to Judy and Josie!

Good morning,

Raining and cold, but at least no snow right now. Good DR visit yesterday, although my cholesterol would be considered very high, all my numbers went down, except for HDL, which went up. He told his receptionist I was "healthy as a horse".

Valerie, glad your DH is doing better, that is a hard thing to go through. It sounds like your knee is on the mend. How much longer do you have PT?

Lynda, I really wish that they would continue DM. I wanted to see him have that dog sit in his lap and actually show him some affection. I always thought the Subaru ads were pretty schmaltzy, but now I have a completely different attitude towards them.

Lori, there is something that my vet called "old dog syndrome"...when one of my other dogs "Kelsey" was around 11 or 12, she started weaving, walking into the wall and her head tilted like she had had a stroke...we rushed her to the vet, but by the time she got there, she was back to normal. He said this sometimes happens in older dogs, they are not sure what causes it. She never had it happen again, lived to 15. He could also be having some reactions to the ear issue, maybe his balance is affected by the infection in the inner ear. Would love to see the pics of the kitchen and all the work you have done. :)

Hi Josie & Judy,

What is everyone up to this weekend? We are off to the dog show again.

Take care,

Good morning....here are a few pictures. the before pictures were actually half way thru the project. I already painted cabinets and started sanding green trim on countertops and removed most of wall paper backsplash. It was cute and country but ugly and needed to go.

Lori, I love the new backsplash....it is actually metal? how do you cut it to size and get it to stay on the wall?

I agree, very nice Lori. I've seen pics of metal but never saw one in person. that is very attractive and I'll bet indestructible. I would never put wallpaper as a backsplash.... even worse than paint! I guess it's OK if you have a kitchen where no cooking occurs. spaghetti sauce splashes, scrapes from pot handles, steam, oil splatters... it needs to be bombproof.
Agree too on the dog ear issue. Hope chester continues to improve. I think tylenol is a waste of time too. not even worth swallowing.

Deb, it's been such a short time since you got the Sub. a great chance to add or (or leave off) features after using them for a few months. we bought ours just before a load of new electronic features became standard. I'd want a back up camera, and the side warning devices on our next one. I just read some numbers, Subaru has the highest rate of repeat buyers of any car model. can't remember where I read it. I still get annoyed with the seat belt chimes, but on slippery roads, they are the best. Hope the dog show goes well.
I'll be doing PT for a long time. Not sure yet how long I'll be going in for therapy. I'm reaching the point where I will just need to continue working at it, taping when needed, and maybe getting a brace to use sometimes, if it helps.
ETA 30 on elliptical, therapy and floor exercises for another 35 min.

I took yesterday off. too many minor sore spots but feel much better this morning. so some kind of workout today.

so funny, I'd looked up Mad Max to read reviews just before the AA announcement. many were 1 star for tedious and repetitive car chases. I never thought about putting it on my queue after that. We may see Revenant. Not decided yet. definitely not Hateful Eight. Spotlight is my next choice but it's cousin's birthday, so he gets to pick.
