Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/15

Today’s workout was Gym Style Back Shoulders and Biceps. I did a timesaver which was 42 minutes and 204 calories burned. My average heart rate was 116 and maximum heart rate was 151. After that I did WS3 One Mile of Motivation for 15 minutes and 114 calories burned. I was really dragging this morning and felt like I needed a little cardio.

I use the navigation system in my car or my phone for directions, but I like having a paper map best. I want the electronics for backup.

Diane Sue, you are wise to keep your workouts simple and to give your body some rest. It must be reassuring to know that you don’t have a tear or another injury. Hopefully you can talk with your doctor soon. Your PT seems to have adjusted her therapy for better results and less pain.

Hello to everyone. Hope that you all have a wonderful day.

16 mountain goats this morning, easy to see. then we went mt biking in a new place and enjoyed it. not technical at all but no break uphill for a few miles and then back down, downhill ride of several nonstop miles. 5-6 miles. somewhere around 3 hours. very pretty out with seasons changing and so nice because no one around. found some bear tracks but just a cub. I'm pretty decent at spotting things like that. would be fun to see the bear but no luck.

Diane sue hope you get to talk to your doc soon who can interpret the results in meaningful terms. good therapy is helping. I never found anything specific on my shoulder issue, but it just disappeared. I hope you are as lucky as I was. the bet advice I got was to keep my shoulder down, and not hiked up on the right like I tended to do for no particular reason.

Carolyn I also like to use the phone for directions especially when in heavy city traffic when you cant read easily, but still like to have a paper map. we have had some epic failures with GPS directions. huge terrible errors that made no sense when you looked at a "real" map. things like the Interstate being in the wrong place, not a small thing.

Hi Everyone,

Monday I did a Peloton Pro Cyclist ride, then Tuesday I did ICE Metabolic Total Body With Icy Core 1 and I added a 2 Minute Plank. Yesterday I did a Peloton HIIT ride. That was extremely challenging! I will be doing more of those rides. Today I did STS Meso 2, Disc 13-Chest, Shoulders & Triceps.
My new availability was approved and it will start on Nov. 4th. It will be very nice to have less hours. I had 3 days off this week and have really enjoyed them.

Deb-It's cooled off here in the evenings but still getting up into the 80's during the day. It doesn't quite feel like fall yet but you can tell it's coming.

Valerie-I've taken Great Courses before. They have some good ones. Nice ride today!

Carolyn-Great workouts this week!

Diane Sue-I hope you can talk to your doctor soon. We tried using the Garmin mapping app on my iPhone when we drove to Colorado a few years ago. We gave up on it when it got us lost in Illinois. We switched to the mapquest app and that worked a little better.

Lori-So nice that you can workout at work! Having light dumbbells there is a great idea!

Judy

Good morning,

No workout yesterday except for taking IKE to a private agility class where I spent the time chasing him around. He is so curious about his surroundings, he doesn't have much focus as of yet.

Valerie, it sounds like much easier to purchase a bottle of that jam! LOL. Nice that you are getting to know your neighbors and they have similar interests.

Diane Sue, that is great that the PT person you are seeing has come up with exercises that help. Will you be able to talk with the DR about the MRI? They somehow think that we are all up on all that medical jargon that they put in the portals. I don't have 100 percent confidence in the Garmin either, but better than me trying to read a map! Our old Garmin took John 40 miles out of his way when he was going on a fishing trip. I wonder if it has to do with keeping them updated on line. The new one we have has been pretty good, but I always do updates that they offer. It's nice when they know all the detours that are there for construction etc.

Judy, nice combination of workouts, and getting use of that new bike. :). That's great that they approved your availability schedule.

Carolyn, good job on the rotation.

Hi to Lori.

Take care,

DH and I have always wandered way off the grid and still do. paper maps are the only reliable way. forest service maps, topographic maps. I'm good with maps. even now we have a road atlas for every state we travel in because the information is MUCH more complete and you can get the big picture, which is so very hard on a tiny screen. as you raise the magnification, you lose the larger field of view until you lose perspective of what you want to see. to get dirt roads, the magnification has to be so great that you cant tell anything and usually don't have numbers showing. If I'm looking for an address in a city I'll use GPS, but if I need to get to a trailhead or campground in the mountains I would not trust anything but paper, or GPS verified by paper map. usually there is no signal either.

Deb, I never knew about chokecherry jam until this last year. last year my niece was looking all over for the jam as gifts , but I didn't know how available the fruit was if you pick it yourself. I have a boiling water canner, unused in a long time, so maybe next year I will try it. I might buy chokecherry jam to see if it's worth it. I don't eat much jam but it is a specialty product in Montana. this year I realized how common the shrub/tree is here and just 2 weeks ago I saw all the fruit that bears and birds know all about! the fruit in the bushes is not that obvious but when we were riding uphill on our bikes I saw all the bear poop ( hard to miss) and realized they were eating some kind of fruit with pits, so I looked for the fruit and bingo! chokecherries. riding uphill at altitude gives you a lot of time to see details, but bears also leave evidence of what they've been eating.

a weight workout later today. we did some outside work and now its raining. need a quieter day anyway.

Judy did you enjoy the Great Courses you took? I didn't care for the first one which was history based, mostly got annoyed with the guy doing the course. doing one on paleontology now that is interesting. I cant do anything real strenuous and still pay attention. what is HiiT Peloton?

Today I did RWH Low Impact HiiT Two for 30 minutes and 201 calories burned. My average heart rate was 125 and maximum heart rate was 152. I also did the RWH Abs Two separately from the cardio which was an additional 13 minutes and 41 calories burned. I had my appointment with the new doctor today and I was very pleased with her. She was very thorough and attentive. While I know that she needed to stay on schedule, I didn’t feel like she rushed through the appointment.

Diane Sue, I had one of your grocery shopping experiences today. Two items that I bought were not in my bags when got home. I was very annoyed, but enough so that wanted to go back to the store. I will have to adjust my dinner plans for today .

Judy, nice work with the Peloton rides and STS Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps. The Peloton HiiT Ride sounds like a challenge. That’s great news that your new schedule was approved.

Valerie, I’ve considered doing one of those Great Courses each time that a brochure comes in the mail, but haven’t tried anything yet. I have never heard of chokecherry jam. I gather that it’s a regional item.

Deb, chasing Ike is probably a workout in itself! I feel like Cathe’s rotations help me maintain a well balanced workout program.

Waving hello to Lori.

Carolyn, it seems chokecherry must be rocky mountain area mainly. I know we have chokecherry on the east side of the Washington cascades but most places selling jam are MT, CO.

I think I am gradually getting better. Not much sleep last night though. Yesterday I just went to Physical Therapy. She gave me some new exercises to do with the bands and handles. Shoulder did pretty well till late afternoon after I did some house work. I did take breaks between tasks though. I woke too early and my arm and neck was hurting. I think I may have laid on it. This morning I did YouTube Jessica Smith low impact cardio 12 minutes and went straight to Lower body Circuit walk 12 minutes, then did my PT exercises and stretching. This took 90 minutes 211 calories according to Fit Bit. I am still waiting to hear back from the doctor. I am either coming down with a virus or my allergies are out full force. My eyes are so watery and irritated, throat scratchy, sneezing :( We took my car and got a new tire today. I don't know how it got a tear in the side, other than the road work I drove through last week.

Valerie, my parents used to pick choke cherries in Nebraska when they would find them. The Physical Therapist has me working on keeping my shoulders down and back when I am going through movements she gives me. Also head aligned right. It takes some work concentrating on the neck and shoulders while doing the band and handle exercises she added. I do tend to have one side that I hike up more than the other. That side has a knot in the back of the shoulder that really gets sore. I remember trying to use the cell phone for finding a cabin we were meeting family at and no internet signal. Directions were not clear and since we had T mobile we were not able to call family members to help. By luck we ran into some of them headed our way on a dirt road. It is good you have resources that help. I always have a fear of getting lost. I bet the cub was cute.

Carolyn, I am resting a lot. Even slow with the house work and take breaks between tasks. Today's work with Jessica Smith was really low keyed. I just want some movement for mobility. I have watched closer to make sure my things and bags reach my cart when I leave. I am sure I will let my guard down again and not get something. For me Sprouts is right around the corner. If it was Walmart I would have probably let them have my stuff. I guess it depends on how much the stuff cost.

Judy, I hope things work well and they keep there word that you get shorter hours. It will be so much better for you.

Deb, I think we did not always get the Garmin updated before we left. I distinctly remember my husband trying to update before and it was not updating. We had one quit when we went to some siminars he had for work in Tulsa once. We ended up going to Target and buying another one. It sits here in the drawer since we have the GPS in the cars. His is much better than mine. Mine, you have to do everything manually while his you talk to. Although it takes forever for it to understand what you want. Makes me wonder about Amazon's Alexa.

Diane Sue, the food that I was missing was about $8.00 in value, but I decided to let it go. The traffic is so bad in the area where the store is located that I didn’t want to go back. I saw the email from Cathe about selling Live downloads. She is offering one from the Glassboro Road trip for free and a discount coupon for purchases.

Today I did STS Meso 2 Legs before work.

Deb-Chasing Ike around sounds like a good workout!

Valerie-I took "Yoga for a Healthy Mind & Body" from Great Courses a couple of years ago. It was more on theory and types of yoga, rather than doing yoga. I did like it and I learned a lot. They have so many courses that I would like to take but I haven't really had time to look at them lately.
The Peloton HIIT class I took was intervals of 30 - 90 seconds high intensity with short rest in between. It was a 30 minute class and there were 17 intervals.

Diane Sue-I'm glad you are getting better. I think the shorter hours will be a lot better for me. I really felt burned out today.

Carolyn-Great workout today! I'm glad you like your new doctor.

Hi to Lori!

Judy

Diane sue, there's a lot lately about what is being called "tech neck". …. where people are leaning forward to look at their phones, and what a strain it puts on their neck and shoulders long term. heads are heavy, and looking down is an odd angle. also from bad positioning over a keyboard. I had a habit of hiking up my right shoulder from carrying a shoulder bag or suitcase. so not saying any of your issues are related to this, but it seems there are a lot of people with problems related to wrong posture. Hopefully PT will continue to help

I did 35 min on the rower, then 3 sets of 30 knee pushups, 16 bicep curls, hammer curls, concentration curls, and the Abs from High reps. I did a palentology lecture while rowing.

Judy that HiiT sounds rough!. there is a course for everything you can imagine. I like the idea but want to do it while exercising if I can.

No workout for me today. I just didn’t feel up to doing it when I first got up. I had an early appointment and decided to skip the workout.

Valerie, thanks for the information on chokecherries.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

not good weather today, so did some cooking, cleaning, and stacked upper body along with abs 2.
carolyn I didn't know about chokecherries until this year. I've seen them blooming in eastern WA but this is all new to me. glad you liked the info.
hiking tomorrow unless weather doesn't clear.
