Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/10/2023

Judy report back after you've used the rower a while. I personally think the problem was the rower. sloshing water sounds seem like they fit with rowing but it was annoying. I try to focus on watching something and the on-off noise interfered. still we could not get heart rates very high. maybe 115 if I remember right. we tried.

these rest stops are on I-90. Busy all year especially summer weekdays or weekends. dozens of trucks, cars pulling in and out constantly, doors slamming, kids hollering, dogs barking. not great for "rest". freeway roar too. even the ramp we pulled off on to change the flat was extremely loud and busy. I stood guard while he worked on the tire so we could both run if someone was passing too closely. you're right, many good samaritans and police officers have been hit on the roadside because of inattentive drivers.

I just could not live with dumping 3 brand new perfectly good tires. am really happy I summoned the courage and called the tire place. I felt stupid but I felt even more stupid acting like it didn't bother me. we didn't have room for 3 or 4 extra tires on our way here but could have picked them up on the way back but shipping them was a much better idea. the manual also said you could fit the flat tire in the well where the mini spare was stored but it didn't fit.

diane sue we've had cars where the low tire light came on and off if the road was bumpy. you can manually check the pressure with a gauge. or maybe the next time you start the car it will have gone away.

This morning was STS 2 Lower Body 1. I must say the one thing these workouts have done is really tighten up my legs and butt. Upper body, too, but that isn't nearly as noticeable.

The guy on the motorcycle was totally just chilling. Using the motorcycle like a bed, laid back, arms crossed, eyes closed. Gotta have nerves of steel. I-94 is crazy with semi traffic as it's the Detroit to Chicago highway. My travel rule when I have a choice is go north on Sunday when everyone is headed south, and come home on a weekday. I can't remember the last time I went north on a holiday weekend. Traffic is scary and the wait to come south across the bridge can be hours.

Diane Sue nice job with CDorner Tabata Style Cardio Kickbox and stretch.

This morning I did P30 Low Impact HiiT which was 30 minutes and 198 calories burned. My average heart rate was 127 and maximum heart rate was 147. After that I did STS 2 Chair Yoga.

Valerie, great job with the hike in Yellowstone, XTrain core, therapy exercises, and upper body exercises.

Judy, I’m sure that you will enjoy having the rowing machine. Nice job doing core workout after work.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner tabata style cardio kickboxing and stretch.

did a mountain bike this morning for an hour and 45. our usual road but with caution as a grizzly has been seen there recently. we were noisy and careful and rang our bells regularly. and here I am, so it worked out ok. does add an extra element to the ride. road has not been open to vehicle traffic so its pretty rough with loose rocks, mud, puddles and tall weeds. a lot harder than it used to be but it doesnt look like it will get fixed anytime soon.
tomorrow is shopping day. next week some neighbors from WA visit and stay for a few days. this will be a busy week.

cathy I-90 is similar to I-94. how can anyone sleep or even rest there?? different physiology for sure!

Today I did a 30 minute Peloton ride and a 30 minute strength circuit with Chris at the gym.

I work both days this weekend but fortunately shorter shifts and in paint, which is physically much easier than garden. Working at the paint desk is like having a spa day compared to garden.

Cathy-I’m sorry about your sump pump motor. I hope it’s something that can easily be fixed or replaced. Great job with STS 2 Lower Body 1. I-94 can be a nightmare. I hate traffic and it seems to be getting worse around here.

Diane Sue-Great job with CDorner Tabata Style Cardio Kickbox and the stretch.

Valerie-I’ll definitely post a review of the rower after I’ve used it a few times. I’ll be curious to see how high my heart rate goes and how it compares to other cardio. Great job with your mountain bike ride.

Carolyn-Great job with P30 Low Impact HiiT and STS 2 Chair Yoga.

Today I did a combo of Raw Timesavers, warm up (7 min), cardio (18 min), Step Intervals (13 min) Total of 38 minutes, heart rate 130/169, 201 calories, 3351 steps. I finished with CDorner Powerful Mobility Flow stopping at the meditation, 25 minutes, 53 calories. Total time was 63 minutes, 254 calories. I almost didn't work out as I was not feeling real well. Sort of lightheaded and nauseous. It helped though to get up and move. Hopefully I can fit in some weights tomorrow. I have some dinner prep and things to do tomorrow for family day. Monday is that bronchoscopy so I know I will not be working out then.
My husband ordered me a really nice Breville expresso machine that will be here tomorrow. It will be fun figuring it all out as I have never had one before.

Just finished STS 2 Upper Body 1. Using the orange fabric band I did 16 push-ups on my toes! Almost didn't make it, but when I got to 12 I decided to stick it out. Today is Nick's 25th birthday. He got home from work about 8 this morning and will be sleeping most of the day, but we are supposed to FaceTime him later and then he's going climbing with a group of his friends.

Diane Sue great job with Raw Timesavers and Powerful Mobility Flow. I hope you are feeling better today.

Judy nice job with 30 minute Peloton ride and a 30 minute strength circuit. I absolutely hate I-94, but there is no back way to get to my parents that wouldn't add 45-60 minutes to the trip. One of those areas where it's just the only real option. And right now, there's the bonus of long construction zones in three areas I go through. The biggest pain along with having to replace the sump pump, thankfully it's not supposed to rain for a few more days, is that when our water softener runs is drains through it, and our iron level is incredibly high. So, at some point everything will start turning orange. I know I'm not doing MY laundry till it's fixed.

Valerie riding through an area a grizzly had been in recently must add quite the level of adrenaline to your ride! And it sounds like it was challenging terrain even without the bear. For all I've lived in Michigan my whole life and hiked in areas where bear might be, my sightings in the wild have been limited to one very distant one, and going to dumps back before they changed the regulations and everything got buried everyday and you couldn't just go park at them. Last time I did that was in the early 80's up in the Keweenaw Peninsula. At least 1/2 dozen bears and a LOT of gulls scavenging while at least a dozen cars sat parked with spectators.

Caroline great job with P30 Low Impact HiiT and chair yoga.

Taking the day off mostly. maybe therapy later. did shopping this morning, costco, REI, and albertsons . have to go to Bozeman, an hour each way so I use a serious list. its 1:00 and all is put away so we were effiicent.

so many times alternate roads to interstates are not divided highways. if there is an accident either direction, everything stops both ways, and they are more likely head on crashes. I dont like interstates but they get the job done more safely than state roads. it would take us twice as long to get here using state roads even though the mileage might be a little less.

our neighbors dog went missing yesterday evening. around 6 we and other neighbors went out looking for him. he is an older dog, usually stays in the yard with their other dog. he is blind in one eye but a spunky little guy. he was found at the trailhead to where we rode earlier in the day. sometimes our neighbor walks the road for exercise, so for reasons only the dog knows, he went several miles from their house to the trailhead and was patiently waiting for her there. there is the local grizzly, coyotes and cougars right there, so it was very good he was found, on his way back down the hill.

cathy, black bears and grizzlies are very different but both love human food and garbage. here trash must be secure, inside a building or in bear proof cans. Even parks used to have dumps that they set up for bears to "entertain" visitors. unfortunately, bears learned to connect people to food and they didnt stop at the dumps!
Now collection locations are locked &chain link fenced. A fed bear is a dead bear. if bears learn to associate people with food, they are doomed. it's about 1000x worse to have a grizzly than a black bear raiding the trash, but once they get conditioned its almost impossible to "unlearn" the connection of people and food. black bears hardly ever attack people but grizzlies are bigger and WAY more aggressive. the local bear(s) here killed someone last spring right near this trailhead. we learned the bear was sleeping in a snow spot, the hiker ( looking for shed antlers) actually stepped right on the bear after setting his pack and bear spray down a short distance away. the bear had no history of causing trouble so he was not tracked down and killed. that's what wildlife officials pieced together after reviewing the incident. our neighbor works for Fish and wildlife.
when we ride we dont go early morning, make noise talking/bell ringing, stay on the road, travel in a pair, carry bear spray in the bike water bottle holder or front of a pack. we've had many benign encounters with black bears with all parties retreating quickly. we've come upon grizzlies too, but not as close. it is a totally different feeling walking alone in the wild compared to being in a car. a completely different experience on another level, especially with a grizzly. it will get your heart rate up like nothing else!
its possible almost anywhere here to come across a grizzly hiking or riding but some spots need extra caution.

Diane sue we have a Breville unit and love it. we got one of the less elaborate ones. gets used every day and has held up for years.
judy it felt to me like high cardio rate was not really the point with a rower so DH just bought the wrong kind of machine for what he wanted.

Today is my rest day. I went to the Farmer’s market and the other specialty markets. It rained the entire time so not very comfortable at the outdoor market. I was extra quick with no browsing.

Valerie, great job with your mountain biking. Having a grizzly in the area certainly made it an adventurous ride!

Judy, great job with the Peloton ride and strength circuit at the gym.

Diane Sue, nice job with the Raw timesavers and CDorner Mobility. You will enjoy the Breville espresso machine. I had a different brand of espresso machine some years ago, but it developed a leak and I never replaced it.

Cathy, great job with STS 2 Upper Body 1. Someone posted a beautiful picture from the Upper Peninsula on WW Connect this morning. She was hiking there. The rocks and rock formations in her picture were awe inspiring.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

**I just looked at the Peloton Rower video clip. It seems to be quite an aerobic workout. Judy, I will be interested in your review.
