Good Morning!

Went to my cousin's husband's 60th birthday party last night, it was nice seeing relatives that I have not seen in years.

HouseMax and have to go to the dog club, there is an obedience match today, and some training for stewards for the upcoming obedience trial. Otherwise nothing exciting here.

Things look scary in the NYC area with the storm/hurricane. We have not had a drop of rain or anything. I guess we are far enough west to avoid any of it.

Take care,

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Rockin' Models (70 min.).

Hurricane Irene is basically just a lot of rain--too much to go to Jacob's Pillow. They cancelled their performances for today, but we did get to see Mark Morris yesterday, and no rain until we were on our way back. We thought Irene might get bad this morning when the wind really kicked up, but it seems to have died down, and it's just heavy rain. No power outage, no falling branches.

Deb, I think we have been so traumatized by Katrina that the impulse now is to evacuate, shut down, and fill the larder with everything you need. I also think Bloomberg did not want to get the heat he got from the snow not getting plowed in NYC last winter, so he was being extra vigilant. Probably the state worst hit is New Jersey, and mostly from flooding of the rivers.

So, I'm just sitting at home today and reading and watching the rain come down.

Hope everyone else is having an Irene-free weekend.

Good morning!

Not even a drop of rain from Irene hit this area. I will say we are very lucky. I hope things settle down in the NYC area. It has to be chaos there.

Nothing new here, just getting set to ready for another week of work. I took Friday as a vacation day so I will have an extra long weekend.

Garance, when do you go back to teaching?

Hi to Valerie, Josie, Joan, & Cathy,

Take care,

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Sweat Express II (57 min.).

Nothing to report on Irene. We escaped unscathed, with 4.5 inches of rain though. It looks like Vermont is having some serious flooding, and the Catskills were hit really hard, too. We live on the side of a mountain, so we don't have flooding, just problems with our water bars, which wash out pretty easily with all that water coming down hill.

Deb, I have a paid leave this semester, and will teach my final semester in the spring, so I am off. Just doing some writing. This was part of my severance package, which happened to coincide with when I wanted to retire anyway. I actually get two years of my final pay after I retire.

Hi Ladies,

I'm back from vacation. It was fun, but now it is back to the grindstone. My DS is settled in San Diego, my DD is starting her last year of college tomorrow and I came back with $500 dollars from Las Vegas.

I did get in 4 bar method classes while I was on vacation, but was not enough and I gained 3 pounds. I need to do my cardio and burn it.

I will be back later.

Josie

Morning ladies!

Same old, same ole' here, up a few times a night to let the "vixen" out. Trying to get Keegan to drink more water and eat the nasty canned food that he hates. We were told no rawhides, which is his fav thing in the world. Poor Keegan, life sucks for him right now.

Garance, lucky you to be off the whole semester!

Josie, it is hard to get back to reality isn't it? At least you came home with some money!

Joan, how are you doing?

Cathy, any rain yet?

Off to get more coffee and
bath.gif
then get ready to head off to work...ugh...

Hi Deb and Josie--

This morning I did STS disk 19 for ch, sh, tris (69 min.). I am feeling kind of sore from this one.

Deb, do you ever have any time to work out now? I would be tired all the time if I had to get up so many times during the night. Reminds me of when my boys were newborns. Max's favorite treat (from Mother Treatsa) is Beggin' Strips, preferably the thick ones. We have also discovered that he loves to have me blow dry him when he gets really wet (as was the case with Irene).

Hi, Josie! How are you liking your barre workouts? I do one every week and much prefer them for my legs to squats and lunges.

Hi to anyone else who shows up!

Hi Ladies,

I'm getting a bit caught up, but I have meetings for the next 2 days which waste a lot of time in my opinion.

Today I will be going to the bar for my workout ;) I wish they served cocktails after!

Garance, I love the class and feel great after every class. I will definitely keep going.

Deb, I would also be tired after getting up every night. I will get better.

Hi to Valerie, Joan and Cathy.

Josie

037.gif

Very tired today. 2 more days of work and then a long weekend. Picking up some prescription dry food and treats for Keegan today. Hopefully this will make him eat something.

Garance, I have not done a workout in over a week. Not that there is no time, but I have traded in the workout time for hopefully an extra hour of sleep.

Josie, did you order the new series? I may have asked this already, if I did please excuse the memory lapse!

Take care,

Hi Ladies,

I went to my bar class yesterday and today my DD and I are going to the movies to see The Help.

Deb, I did not order the new series, but I will probably buy the cycling tape. If any of you want to sell it to me let me know.

Hi Valerie, Cathy, Garance and Joan!

Josie

Hi all, back from a short backpack. good to hear you didn't get flooded or blown away from Irene but several inches of rain causes it's own set of problems. I think government officials are being very vigilant about appearing max on prevention measures. No way to predict things like this so I think they were correct in assuming the worst and hoping for less.

I've been very active. trying to remember what all I did since last week. a bike ride, 30 miles GS chest triceps. and a 15 mile backpack for 2 days. not an epic or anything but we haven't done one all year due to very snowy conditions. we went to the east side of the mountains and it was quite lovely. all the flowers, a whole season, worth were blooming. Usually there's a sequence to it, but conditions forced most to bloom all at once. usually this area is pretty dried out and brown but this year it's still green and lovely. I picked our tent site and not until the next day when we were packed up to leave did I notice a hornets nest not 10 feet away. same color as the tree bark and not very big but a big surprise. not clear that night so didn't get the expected star show. Seeing stars away from city lights is amazing if you've never done it. not too much water on the east side so we ended up in the only spot with some water. couple other people there too but everyone was quiet and well behaved. Not a real steep trail either but most other choices were much longer and started lower in elevation and it was very warm the first day. I have pretty limited tolerance for heat and flies so the shorter higher elevation trip was the pick.

Deb, keegan won't starve himself to death. He'll get used to whatever he needs in time, though not without protest. How will you keep him from getting into kaylee's food or will they be eating the same thing? What kind of stones did he have? I 've always thought canned dog food was wretched to mess with. hated the smell etc and my dog fortunately liked dry food better anyway. Are there other options or is this the only choice?

I decided to order 2 disks plus the slider disks from the Low Impact series. ordered afterburn and slide and glide. I don't have a step and detest step workouts so if I missed anything good I'll order later. I have so many good workouts already that I will focus on those. I space my Cathe workouts with so much other stuff that I actually think I'll get more out of them if I repeat what I have so I learn them better. I really like the GS series and LBB and HR. I've only done STS total body once or twice and liked it too.

Anyone know where Joan is these days?

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did Zumba Cardio Party Live (54 min.).

Josie, I would be happy to sell you my spin disk. Don't plan on buying a spin bike any time soon. I will let you know when Cathe sends my package.

Welcome back Valerie! It sounds like you have had a very active little vacation. The flooding in the Hudson Valley and up in Vermont is pretty crippling. Houses just floating away, mud everywhere, and some places totally cut off (Killington VT). Joan is over at the 50s thread. She always starts it, and it sounds like she is so busy taking care of her grandkids and her mother that she probably doesn't want to post twice. (Hi Joan if you read this thread.)

Deb, I would do the same--take the extra hour of sleep. Keegan will probably come around when he realizes how hungry he is.

I missed a lot of the news coverage since we were gone but I know when we get that much rain it's a mess! and this is a pretty wet place to begin with. when all at once, things slide and move around causing so many unexpected things. trees fall over, roads & bridges go out, so I feel for everyone muddling thru it. we get that, but usually in winter.

Deb, If you can wiggle it in, even 15 minutes will help.... it doesn't have to be the full deal to count. I get crazy if I can't do anything for 2 days. today I took a rest day but I know tomorrow I will be getting itchy.

I really like the slider moves in so many of the later disks. I still use paper plates. when it gets humid they refuse to slide! I drag my foot and the disk sits there like it's glued in place! Hope the actual disk works more smoothly.

Lynda, that's right.. I sometimes look at the other 50+ thread but haven't lately. Hi Joan in case you read this thread but no time to post.

Getting ready for bed but thought I would post so you know I'm not dead.

This is the third week of babysitting and I'm exhausted. I know why you should have your kids when you are young. I have never felt "old" before but I have been lately.

No exercise but about a mile walk a day.

Dil told son to leave for a week because she was tired of his depression. He is actually much better and will go back to work tomorrow. She has told him she is mad at him because when the depression started to appear he didn't do anything about it immediately. Unfortunately part of his depression makes it almost impossible to do anything. He said at the time he couldn't even poor a bowl of cereal. She was aware of the pattern that about every two years his medicine becomes ineffective but she never mentioned it to me before now. I told son he should remember the house is in my name and if they get divorced, he would get the house and the babysitter. I also told him not to even mention divorce. I sometimes think it is a self-fullfilling prophecy.

We went to mil house last Sunday to start cleaning and painting to get it ready to sell. We will probably need to spend at least Sat. and Sun. this weekend to get most everything done. We will have to worry about getting rid of furniture later. I don't know how long it could take to sell a house in this real estate market in a small town.

Joan

Good morning,

Another night of getting up a few times, for puppy breaks, and also a thunder storm. I took tomorro off so looking forward to a nice long weekend.

Josie, I would have sold you the spin DVD, but Garance beat me to it! I will probably sell mine on Ebay. I never tried spinning so no chance I am purchasing a spin bike. I don't have room in my messy basement anyway.

Valerie, Afterburn and the Tri-Sets are the ones I am interested in. I may not even open the step one. Her step workouts are too complicated for me. I know you feel the same way. I like to do step, but just not Cathe's The old Gin Miller ones are about my speed! Keegan had calcium oxalate stones. We have to keep them separate when we feed them, Kylee has puppy food that Keegan would just take if he had the chance so we feed her in her crate.

Joan, glad to know things are ok with you. How are you feeling? (besides exhausted from babysitting!). Sorry to hear that your son is depressed. It sounds like this is something he has been controlling with meds?

Garance, we picked up the dry version of the prescription food yesterday, and also some treats. I mixed the dry with the canned, and of course he ate around the canned and picked out the dry food. He does like the treats though!

Well, off to another day, and then the weekend. Why do shorter weeks seem to be longer than a regular one?

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did disk 21 for back and bis (59 min.).

Deb, so Keegan actually prefers the dry dog food to the canned? Every dog I have ever had preferred the canned stuff to kibble. What was it in his previous food that caused the stones? I hope you have a sleep-filled long weekend!

Joan, nice to hear from you. I saw your post about feeling old on the other thread. I think anyone would feel old, given your busy days. Your dil sounds . . . . difficult. (I could think of less kind terms, because I just don't know how you get mad at someone suffering from chronic bouts of depression.)

So what did you do on your "rest" day, Valerie? Somehow I cannot imagine you resting.

Hi to Josie!

(If you are reading this Cathy, let us know if the wild fires are affecting your area.)

I didn't actually "rest" on my rest day but didn't do anything exercise related. grocery shopping. some light yard work. laundry. Started cleaning up the camper for our vacation. pretty benign stuff. I need a day like that once a week.
today though I went to yoga at 7, and when I got back DH had the bikes ready and we did a 30 mile ride, 2 hrs 15 minutes. decent time! NOW I'm pooped. we were going fast but still other riders pass us. it seems tall people have some mechanical advantage on bikes, but maybe we need better bikes. we seem to work harder and still go slower than others.

I need to run a couple errands this afternoon, nothing challenging. the weekend weather is looking warm and sunny....we make a plan of NOT trying to go anywhere on holiday weekends. too busy, especially with kids going back to school. everyone who can breathe will be out trying to do something.

Our dog liked dry food better too, he never would eat the canned stuff, whichw as fine with me.

calcium oxalate? that's weird. I'm trying to remember from my days in the lab, but it seems ( if I remember right) people would get calcium oxalate crystals( we called them coffin lids because of their shape) after asparagus was served for a meal. I need to check my facts, that is a loooong time ago. wonder what the doggie equivalent of asparagus would be?

Cathe's step workouts.... or anyone else's.... are excedrin headache #1 for me. I am so lame at step..... can't dance a step to save my life. I actually am kicking myself for not ordering the whole series anyway. the low cost including the slider disks made it a really good deal. I know I'd use only a few of the disks but cost wise I didn't end up spending that much less.

Joan, babysitting makes 20 yr olds feel old! I think many people have children before they realize what they're getting themselves into! I baby sat enough in my teens that I KNEW I didn't want to sign up for that job full time.
and guess what... walking a mile IS exercise. sometimes you need to settle for what you can squeeze in.
Is it possible you could use the mil's house as a rental? we've done it, and I didn't much like the process, but in this market it might be easier to rent than sell. Lots of people don't see home ownership as a viable route these days, and rental properties are in more demand now than a few years ago. that said, you need a property mgm firm to handle the process but it might be better than having it sit vacant on the market forever. sorry your son and dil are not getting along very well. sometimes even a lot of benefits (like free childcare and a house) are not enough to make people try to get along.

Josie, more expensive bikes? DH's bike needs some service and I wonder if we should consider upgrading. his bike was about $700 two years ago. not junk but considered entry level I think. we are riding consistently and often and I'm thinking maybe he should trade in this one and get a nicer one. I'm wondering what benefits a more expensive bike would offer.

Morning all,

How do you get a puppy to sleep more than 4 hours?? We intentionally did not let her sleep or rest after dinner, kept her playing with Keegan the whole time, running and rough housing etc. Went to bed at 9:30, she was up at 1:15, 3:30, and then at 4:15 for good. She would not go back to sleep. Ugh. I am going to need a whopping nap today.

Garance, yep, he likes the dry food. Has always liked crunchy things, he actually eats ice cubes. That is how I am getting him to drink more water, he will eat a bowl of crushed ice, but rarely drinks from his water bowl. They are not sure what caused the stones, could be the food, the rawhides, which he ate a lot of, or just how he handles certain proteins and minerals. Vets don't have a clue on this I have come to that conclusion.

Valerie, I wouldn't call what you did resting! The vets keep mentioning green beans as a cause for these types of stones. Who feeds dogs green beans? He did get a few sugar snap peas in his 3 years of life, but not many. when I would be packing them in my lunch, he would get one or two. Not that they are the same as green beans. Yes, that is why I pre-ordered the whole series, knowing I may not do some of the workouts, it seemed a better deal, free shipping too. I have no idea how to do them in a rotation, but I guess that will be part of the fun in getting them.

What is everyone up to this weekend?

Green beans? too weird. Our Dobie used to love crunchy things. DH & I always grew broccoli. the dog would go in and nip a broccoli leaf off at the stem end, and eat the crunchy 10 inch base. then he'd go get another. he'd eat all the bottom leaves off until the plants looked like little umbrellas. he ate other vegies, seemed to like crunchy, also preferred dry food.

Hope Kaylee learns to sleep thru the night soon!

It's hard getting animals to drink more water. as many water bowls as I've had around the house, our dog and all of our cats drink out of the toilet. I can only assume the water is colder? I keep a bowl filled "for show" but nobody ever drank from it as far as I can tell. can't use any toxic bowl cleaners around here.

Hi Ladies,

I went to my bar class last night. I plan on going to class on Saturday plus spinning and same on Sunday or a 35 mile bike ride. I have not made up my mind on the ride, because they are going up Pacific Coast Highway and I'm always a bit uncomfortable on that rout.

No big plans for the weekend other that cleaning the garage since I have more space now that my DS took the furniture that I had been saving for him for the last 4 year. I can spread all my workout equipment and set my bike up as a spinning bike.

Valerie, I don't think that buying a more expensive bike makes a big difference. My bike was also $700. and I love it. You can always change the components to make your more efficient. The more expensive bikes are a bit lighter.

Have a great weekend!

Josie
