Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 8/28

Josie, both DH & I are short. 5'2", 5'6". DH has a long torso while my inseam is longer than his. I had trouble reaching far enough forward to shift and brake, and have cheater brake levers. my legs aren't particularly long, but my torso is very short & I couldn't reach far enough forward to the bars when I got my seat/legs right.
I'm not wanting to spend money just to spend money. just something we're considering because people go by us like we are barely moving. I know clipless pedals might help, DH has stuck with them but he's getting left in the dust by people who don't look like they're working as hard as we are, but going faster with less effort.

I had no clue we'd end up enjoying this so much but honestly, I'd never go 100 miles in one trip on this bike. maybe it's me, not the bike?

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Fat Burning Fusion (46 min.).

Deb, it really sounds like you have a newborn at home with you. I remember being exhausted all the time and sitting with my babies watching whatever was on TV at those strange hours. Don't want to go back there again. Hope Kylee starts needing more sleep--soon! Our younger son is coming here this weekend and we will take him out to dinner tomorrow night. He's playing a round of golf with his granddad. Sounds like the last bit of truly summer weather this weekend. Saw friends from NY today and went to the Pissaro exhibition at the Clark. We had Thai for lunch and then did a bit of clothes shopping at a new boutique in town.

Hah! I knew you weren't resting, Valerie, on your so-called rest day. Tomorrow is my "rest" day, but it's when I do Housemax after sleeping in to 7:30.

Sounds like you have a exercise-filled weekend, Josie!

Hi to Joan and Cathy!

Good evening,

Saturday and Sunday we will be painting and cleaning again.

DS had two days of work and everything went fine. I had dinner with him Monday and he sounded so much better. It's amazing how the medications work. The first 2-3 weeks he is usually tired and then they kick in and he is fine. I was so afraid of him sitting alone in a hotel room. I wanted him to stay here but he didn't want to bother us.

Garance I will be glad to see the last of summer. It was 102 today and will be 100 tomorrow. This is the 4th hottest summer on record for our area.

Real estate taxes are so high in Illinois that I'm not sure we could get a rent that would cover taxes and insurance. I'd like to try to sell house first and then see what happens.

Joan

Good morning ,

Well it's Labor Day weekend and the official end of summer. It has sure been a strange one weather wise, no matter what part of the country you are in.

Joan, with temps in the 100's, Cathy roasting in Texas, Valerie with cold snaps, and the east coast with hurricanes, and the wettest spring I think we ever have had.

Valerie, I never realized how much was involved in getting the right bike until reading about you and Josie and what you have.

yes lots of dogs do like drinking out of the toilet because of how cold the water is. I wonder how it stays so cold? Keegan would probably like that water, only we never have given him access to it or to any of our other dogs, by just keeping the lid down. I have been doing a lot of research on the stone issue, and seem to conclude that it is the type of protein, not how much. Certain food is higher in purines, which is what can cause the stones in some dogs. Beef is one of the higher ones, (organ meat, liver being at the top). I think it may be attributed to all the rawhides he ate. We gathered them all up and he is not getting any now. That, and the special food and treats, I want to see if it makes a difference in the PH level of his urine. This is how they can tell if he is doing better.

Josie, it sounds like you have a nice workout schedule for the weekend!

Garance, there is a reason why people are supposed to have babies ( and puppies!) while they are young. I may be too old for this! Sounds like a nice weekend. What do you think of the DWTS line up? Will you be watching?

Joan, glad your DS is doing better. He doesn't live where you do? I guess I must have misunderstood something, or is he staying in a hotel because of what DIL said?

Well off to get more coffee and wake up!

Did GS back biceps yesterday and am sore today. band work always bites!

Lynda, Housemax is not "rest" either. I think a day of intense house/garden work can burn off a bunch! I love Thai, especially in a restaurant so I can order my high star level and not worry about burning DH's head off. I've never been that successful in recreating those flavors at home. and curry, as much as I like it, seems to hang around no matter how much I scrub. I can still smell it days later. so I love it in a restaurant but not so much at home.

Deb, you spend a lot of time in the same position on a bike so getting the mechanics right is important. for casual riders not so much but repetitive motions like pedaling, if the angle is wrong or your leg is too bent or too straight.. over time it can cause problems. Like most sports gear, I think taller people, men in particular, have an advantage because designs favored male proportions. My bike is fine but if we upgrade I will be a little fussier about details.

Joan, those temps have to be miserable. some areas, property simply isn't selling. people aren't even looking! just meant rental as a possible fall-back plan. we held onto a rental for several years and sold it when the market for houses was good & made a good profit. the rental years were not a picnic though.

we are finally getting very pleasant weather. 80 and sunny. I can't complain about august this year. no really hot days and most nights have been cool and pleasant. will do Gardenmax today, DH is on call so better if we hang around here.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

Just checking in after Housemax this morning.

Deb, I hope you have a rest-filled weekend and Kylee begins to settle down at night. We don't give too much rawhide to Max (just every now and then), but he does like the occasional marrow bone (uncooked). The vet does not recommend bones, though, because it might eventually be bad for his teeth. Right now, they look super clean.

Joan, that's good news about your son. Doesn't sound so good on the marriage front if he's staying at a hotel. DH's parents have a house in Florida in one of those exclusive golf course developments, and a condo where we live. Not sure what would happen if one must seek assisted living or dies. Our weather has really been pretty nice this summer. No extended heat waves, no excessive rain or drought, and temps mostly in the 50s and 60s at night and into the low 80s during the day. I guess that's what they mean by a "temperate" climate.

Watched Red last night with ds. Pretty good and funny. Aging assassins played by John Malkovich, Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren.

I like hot food, too, Valerie, and I often make Szechuan Chinese dishes. No ethnic stuff tonight, though.
