Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 8/25

Hi all,

Still working on getting things back to normal in the basement. I did do 11,000+ steps yesterday.

Valerie, glad the camper is okay. It's like one of those "what can happen now?" things. Better news on your hand situation. I have a similar thing on my left hand thumb...the knuckle is larger than it should be and the finger is useless.

Carolyn, great job on B&G's! that is a long one for sure. :) Nice that you were able to connect with old friends.

Diane Sue, I can see how you would get those appointments mixed up. Good thing that you discovered it before you went to PT too early. That storm sounds nasty! Hail in August. What's next? Hope the ultrasound results were good. Hopefully the plumbers will only have to dig up our side lawn to get to the start of the sewer main.

Judy, Good that you are going to see the HR person again and let her/him know that you are not happy. Maybe they will give you a break with that schedule and can start working the hours you asked for. Or better, why not go to a competitor that you mentioned pays more, and with your experience get a part time job there? Agree that all those hours with that physical type work could end up with a serious injury.

Hi to Lori,

Take care,

This morning was 40 minutes of PT exercises and then I went to get my thyroid ultra sound. I am trying to get some things accomplished today. Got some cleaning done. Tomorrow I should be able to get in a little cardio before I go to the physical therapist. I guess it will be a few days before I get the results back on that test. At least that is what they said.

Valerie, I am glad that you do not have rheumatoid arthritis. My mother had osteoarthritis. I remember my grandmother having gnarled fingers. My mother in law had terrible arthritis in her hands. Your day sounds like a busy one. Have fun with your hike.

Judy, that is ridiculous that part time is that long of hours. Walmart always did that so they did not have to pay their employees overtime, but kept them working long hours. I have talked to some of the people that work there. My mother in law worked their jewelry counter for a long time. Then she got a job at a hospital which was much better. She retired in CA from a hospital working the desk and calls etc.. That was years ago. I got the vest and it looks good. I am looking forward to when I can do all of those workouts. I could understand not wanting to go heavy when you had to go to work.

Carolyn, the brand of the vest is Empower. I got both of them, 8 and now 4, from Amazon. Did they ever have to do anything about the nodules? I watched her mark and put measurements on them. Keeping my head tilted back and to one side was not so neck friendly though. She had a pillow under my back not my head. When she would pause for a minute I would try to move a bit to get rid of tightness.

Deb, I hope they don't have to dig up much either. The storm was kind of unexpected. When I went out today at first I was wondering why some areas had the signal lights off and stop signs sitting out and when I saw a broken telephone pole and tree, it dawned on me that it was because of the storm.

Diane Sue, I was treated with irradiated iodine in 2005. I went from hyper to hypothyroidism with that treatment and I have been on synthroid since then.

Good hike yesterday, not a terribly difficult one but it was very warm. several miles. a lot of up and down in the sun. we saw several porpoises, seals, and whole schools of small fish jumping out of the water. could not tell if something was driving them up and out, but fun to watch.

I'm glad its not RA too.

Going to road ride today.

Carolyn, my mother had the same thyroid issue, as does my SIL. my mother was horrible to live with until she got treated. it coincided with me entering my teens.

This morning I did Pyramid Pump Upper Body for 50 minutes and 243 calories burned. Average heart rate was 116 and maximum heart rate was 164.

Deb, I hope that you are making progress with your basement.

Valerie, it sounds like you had a nice hike yesterday. I was easily irritated at times before and after the treatment. It took a while to get the medication dosage right, but I am fine now as long as I take it. The generic version doesn’t work for me but the pharmacy always substitutes that one. I have learned to check each time before I leave the store.

Diane Sue, thanks for the information on the vest. I’ve been thinking about getting one.

Judy, I hope your work day is okay.

Hello to Lori. Enjoy the afternoon everyone.

This morning I did Kelly Coffey Cardio Sculpt Overload again, just the Low impact cardio & Lower Body mix. 29 minutes, 194 calories, met 7.0, heart rate average 141, max 173, 2,348 steps. I wore the 4# vest which worked well for me. I think it helps intensify those body weight lower body moves. I limited overhead movements again as this seemed fine last time. I then did Cathe Lean Legs and Abs mix #3 timesaver chair/firewalker and bonus barre. I wore 3# ankle weights for the barre work and used the blue firewalker band for that, also 8# db on thigh for the chair work. This was 37 minutes, heart rate average 97, max 151, 621 steps, met 5.5, 137 calories. Total time was 66 minutes, 331 calories, 2,969 steps. I figured I would stick with the workouts that did not bother me before. I really do not want to do spin every day and my husband is on the tread climber most mornings before work. They called from PT and moved my appointment to 30 minutes later.
PT is done and she added a couple of new moves for that shoulder to my others. I wrote them down when I got home as the latest they have added are not showing up on the app as I go through them. She really found that knot in my neck, shoulder, trap area. She would put pressure on and it would move. Boy did it hurt. After awhile it loosened up some. She concentrated more on the shoulder today. I got my next two weeks of PT set up to work with taking my grandson to and from school and to get them done before my doctor visit on the 12th. Hopefully things are really good by then. I am having a different PT next week. It seems they discuss the patients problems. When I went back to the first one last week he mentioned what he had discussed with the other one. I guess they would have to since it is more than one.

Carolyn, I am glad that they were able to treat the thyroid problem. I have read often that little differences made in a medication can alter how it works. Why they have to change formulas, capsules etc is beyond me and generic is not the best option for a lot of people. They sure want to push it though. I really like the 4# vest. It has a pocket in the front at the waistline, I think for holding a cell phone or something. It folds over and if I remember right I saw a picture of a woman running with her headphones coming from the pocket thing.

Valerie, glad you had a good ride yesterday. Women do not do well when their hormones are off. My mother had a total hysterectomy when I was 10. She had a lot of ups and downs and sometimes it was rough. Particularly for a child to understand.

Good evening ladies!!!

I have had a few long work days this week. Rest day was Monday and then had another today. Too tired to get up early. I will catch up over this long weekend - I am so looking forward to!!!!!!!!

Hope everyone is well!

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. We had a long morning/afternoon taking the dogs to the groomer etc etc It's a long process, about 3 and a half hours for him to do the 2 of them. Too far to come back home and then go back so we just go to the outlet mall and kill time before picking them up.

Valerie, nice hike, and seeing all those water animals! You must have been hiking pretty close to the ocean?

Carolyn, good job on Pyramid Pump...that is a great workout.

Diane Sue, I hope you get your ultrasound results soon. it sounds like the PT person you had the other day may have found part of the issue? When I was doing PT, I actually had 3 different people. The "head guy" was always the one I met with to evaluate my progress. He was the first person I had, then he had me go to an underling, then I was passed on to a different underling. All the time though, I felt that they kept my record up to date so they were all aware of the progress, etc. Any x-rays were always reviewed and explained by the head guy.

Lori, you deserve the long weekend!

Judy, same to you....I hope you have all or at least part of this weekend off.

Take care,

Good morning we did our regular road ride yesterday 26 miles.

Yes Deb it’s a park near the sound. Very cliffy with a small area on rocks above water so a good view place. Not busy because there is a state park nearby that gets most of the traffic . It’s a pretty reliable place to see porpoises . It has some high viewpoints and trails that work down to above the water. not that easy. Had it to ourselves since dog walkers don’t do the hard parts, unsafe for dogs on cliffs. had an interesting thing happen. 3 people were heading down toward the same area when we were on our way out. just as they passed, a woman ripped out a strap on her sandal. I always carry a bit of duct tape, so we were able to "tape her up" so she could continue. my good deed of the week. it is too steep and slippery for Tevas but I don't know if she continued all the way or stopped part way. DH and I are the ones with emergency supplies. we needed the tape about 2 yrs ago for DH when his ski boot disintegrated.

Deb, that's a long wait to get dogs clipped. I had no idea it took that much time.

We will be close to home this weekend. might do a couple rides but not trying to hike anywhere. the traffic and crowds are a real turn off.

My mother was able to take Synthroid and it worked OK for her but I have read some people do better with Armor thyroid. I think that's what its called. my mother got absolutely crazy for a few years and it was about the time I was early teens. she was terrible to live with and I was the target.

This morning I did Low Impact Step for 37 years and 271 calories burned. My average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 251. I also did Breath of Life Chair Yoga with Susan Tuttle for 30 minutes. That was 55 calories, average heart rate 95 and maximum heart 123. I was only planning to preview the workout, but decided to do it instead. It was a surprisingly good stretch, which I had not expected. It’s one of those that I purchased for my husband.

Diane Sue, you had a good workout yesterday considering your upper body limitations. Nice job. With thyroid medication I have read that it’s best to stick with the one that you started with instead of switching back and forth. I tried taking the generic three different times and it really makes me very sick. It’s as if I am not taking the medication.

Lori, the long weekend sounds like it’s exactly what you need. Hang in there and get some rest.

Valerie, it was very fortunate for the hiker that you had emergency supplies. I’m sure that she appreciated your good deed. I have also heard that some people do better with the Armor Thyroid.

Hello to Deb and Judy.

we take a few long strips off a duct tape roll and wrap it on itself on a wooden tongue depressor. I don't want you all to think I carry a whole roll. useful many times. the lady was very appreciative. she would have had a hard walk back with the sandal flopping uselessly.

DH has had trouble with BP meds, generics, when they switch the manufacturer between different companies or countries.

Hi Everyone,

Wednesday I did KCM Strong and Lean with the Bonus Extension then the Raw Legs & Glutes Finisher. I also worked 8 hours so had over 20,000 steps. Yesterday I did 60 minutes of Peloton rides. I had scheduled yesterday and today off. This morning was my annual exam with blood work. I should have the results by early next week. I also scheduled my mammogram for later in October. I do work all weekend, and Monday, but it's my own fault for not scheduling one or two of the days off ahead of time. At least I'm off Sept. 8-11 and October 15-20th, if I stay that long.

Deb-yes, I should look for another job. Almost any part time retail position would be easier physically than Home Depot. At this point I am more concerned about getting injured than anything else.

Diane Sue-I have the 8 lb Empower vest too. Great workouts yesterday!

Valerie-That's good that you had emergency supplies with you. I bet the person you helped really appreciated it.

Carolyn-Great job with Low Impact Step! I need to start doing some step workouts so I can be ready for Cathe's new workouts.

Hi to Lori!

Have a nice weekend!

Judy

This morning I did Les Mills Pump Step, 32 minutes, heart rate 139 average, 165 max, 2839 steps, met 8.3. I then did Raw abs finisher a little past the standing for 13 minutes, avoiding lifting arm overhead so I stopped at the sit up overhead with dbs. Before I have held the db in front of me, but did not want to push it. This was 41 calories, 203 steps. I finished with PT and some foam rolling afterward. 1 hour and 1 minutes, 80 steps, 80 calories. Total time was 1 hour 46 minutes, 3,122 steps, 348 calories.

Good Afternoon, Ladies. I couldn’t motivate myself to do Muscle Max, so I decided to take a rest day today . I’ve been out running a few errands and came home with a mild headache. I’m sure it’s because of hurricane Dorian out there playing havoc with the atmospheric pressure.

Judy, Low Impact Step is a good workout for practicing your step moves. It’s just a little more than Basic Step, but not complicated at all.

Hello to everyone and have a wonderful day.

We did a short mt bike this morning. about 6 miles. about 1 hr 45. funny, it used to be our "long" ride. we were there early and done by the time people were arriving. no horse people this morning, but a fair number of mt bikers. we only saw 3 people when we were almost back to parking area. we were there around about 8:30 so not even that early.
we gave up on holiday weekends long ago. can't do anything without mobs of people, and the drive anywhere is long and deadly.
