Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 8/14

My husband gave me my Fit Bit Blaze early so I am getting it set up to use tomorrow.

Lynda, I order from Total Fitness all of the time and forget that code. I also forget that I earn points or something and money off since I buy a lot from there.

Lorie, you are going to enjoy the new pup :) That is sad about the others. I have heard of that happening before. That is why they used to have those whelping boxes built with a ledge that sticks out or something to protect the new puppies. At least that is what I think I remember them being for. When I do Ice lower Body Blast and Cathe is still talking or showing a move I keep moving through whatever I was doing.

I looked and found ccollage was still around. Hard to find workouts that are this limited but still worth doing.
I haven't looked at Totalfitness site yet. SIL is mobile, not stuck sitting, but she has problems putting weight on the knee as you would during " knee" pushups or those moves where cathe is on knees and lifts opposite or same leg and arm. she does treadmill and recumbent bike wortouts but no upper body things at all. there is a premix in I don't know any one else with a TKR so not sure if this is "standard". she will need the second knee done in time, so hope she will do the proper therapy next time.

CUB has a premix where she is standing only, but I don't want to get a disk where she can do only 5% of the workout. I'll go look at the totalfitness site. I'm not sure SIL will actually do this, but I never thought she'd stick to the treadmill either. so hoping for the optimistic outcome.

Good morning,

Not much going on here...we didn't get to the painting yesterday, we had a problem with our boiler for the furnace which meant we weren't getting hot water. They came and said some of the points on the boiler were corroded...cleaned them and the hot water worked again. I guess we are supposed to get them in to clean it every year...who knew?

Diane Sue, do you have a birthday coming up? If so, Happy Birthday. Great early gift! I wish I had your enthusiasm for working out. I go in "fits & spurts". Glad Gertie is back to her old self. I think the pumpkin is a good idea to keep up. Phone stuff can be so frustrating! You will have to let me know how you like your Galaxy s7...I have the S6...I think I just got it under the wire before they offered the S7. Thanks for the info on essential oils. I may purchase some and use in a homemade air freshener that you spray. I made one with vodka, water, and some oil I had and it seems to work well. I don't like the idea of something lit like a candle or plugged in. I looked at the battery operated diffusers, they didn't seem to spread to far. Mostly for a small room.

Valerie, maybe some Jessica Smith YouTube videos for your SIL? If she has a tablet or something to use to view them. She has all kinds of stuff, different lengths etc. Also free so if you don't like one, you just go to a different one, no loss. I looked at Cathe's Basic one for Beginners, but they involve step.

Lynda, that is what I like about the Metabolic workouts too....I think if you do 3 of those a week, you don't need to do any cardio workouts. I guess I was pretty lucky with menopause. I had the usual symptoms, hot flashes, sleepless nights etc, but not bad enough to take anything. They lasted a couple years I think, in my 50's. Yes, I think we made a turn around with the club, finally!

Lori, I can see how you would want a completely different dog with the new puppy. A little brown bundle of love! So cute. Hopefully the breeder will send you pics of the puppies while they are growing so you can see her getting bigger etc. So cute! I need to go check out yesterdays Live workout.

Hi to Josie, Judy & Caitlin,

Any plans for this weekend? We have a 25th anniversary party Saturday and a dog show in Erie Pa on Sunday....wish me luck!

Take care,

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live Crossfire Quick Fix plus Core (34 min.). Definitely too advanced for me in terms of impact and some of the core moves. No way I am doing some of those jumps with the green band around my ankles. I can't do the walking planks without falling over either. I just left off the ankle band and did the best I could. I still was a sweaty mess at the end, and at least it was short.

Our younger son is coming this weekend, but he will probably spend most of his time at the golf course. Kim is haying, but I will probably go to an afternoon film on Sunday. There is always Housemax for me and food shopping. Not a particularly exciting weekend.

Deb, good luck on the dog show! Are you putting Kylee into an agility trial?

Have a great weekend everyone!

Deb, they have treadmill, recumbent bike in the garage with a TV and DVD player so something on disk is best. I don't know why they seem to be in marginal shape if they use this stuff daily like they say. BIL had hip replacement maybe a year and a half ago and did therapy and can't even tell he had an issue now. SIL has the replaced knee. the other knee isn't good. she has some sort of issue with her neck where the bone has deteriorated. for this reason she won't do anything where she might fall, like ride a "real" bicycle or movements where she'd potentially jerk her head. ( I don't want to suggest anything risky). Cathe goes to great pains to make her workouts wide ranging and varied, and I think SIL will be better off with simple lifting, curls, hammer curls, etc. assuming she follows through at all. getting on the floor is hard for her with the knee. to get on the floor is a major production, no way she will do crunches, sit ups etc.
diane sue, that is what I'm trying here.... get her to do some uncomplicated upper body work. she is over weight and moving "toward" type 2 diabetes. she of course is in denial. she gets pissed off easily, so I was hoping for Cathe since I think she is the least annoying person on exercise DVDs. but will look at the site you mentioned Lynda, and Leslie sansone, coffey Meyers , etc. when she said she could not do even a wall push up ... I downgraded my plans.

I agree on the metabolic workouts. I like them as long as no step. I can modify jacks. I hate those!
I over slept this morning. went to bed 8:30 last night. no good sleep the last 4 nights. I slept until 7:30 this morning! Feel caught up now. DH is off on a ride, he was just leaving when I woke up. I slept thru all his noise and prep! so will do a metabolic workout this morning. going to be a hot one today, in the mid 90's for the next 2 days, then a cool off. usually when it's this hot, the humidity is very low though so not as bad as it sounds.
I'm going to complain about something else now... pillow top mattresses! we have one, a king and I have never spent an entire night on it. we should have returned it. In laws had a new mattress in their guest room. OMG it was hot! even with the window open and 55 degrees I was too hot. that plus polyester sheets. or one of those mattress covers that reflects heat. when you look at new mattresses, almost every one has a pillow top or memory foam. I must be the oddball as people buy them and must like them.

Valerie,

How about KCM's "Start Here" from the 30 minutes to fitness programs she has: She is probably the most calm and upbeat instructor out there...also has a modifier in most workouts. Here is the link and write up:

Deb I think you did the work for me! I think that looks reasonable and coffey Meyers seems low key and not annoying. I will get this one for her and see how it goes. she may never use it or who knows? maybe she'll enjoy it and do more.
didn't do my workout yet...DH got home and called me out to visit with a neighbor, and then he wanted lunch. so I'm waiting a bit and will get on it in a few minutes.

Today I did Party Rockin Step #1, 54 minutes, 380 calories. I used my new Fit Bit Blaze and I did not realize that I had pushed the pause button 14 minutes into the workout when I kept trying to see the calories etc.. I saw it would flash pause and then go out. So, I took the avg heartrate for the 14 minutes and used my calories burned app to figure it. I am sure it was higher than this as I moved further into the workout though. When I did the weight workout I kept my hands off the watch. I can raise my arm and see the heart rate. It is just getting used to it. Today I did Ice Muscle Meltdown 4 rounds premix which is supposed to be 37 minutes. It took me 41 because I stopped to change some weights and between rounds I stopped to write down the weight changes. This only came to 103 calories. Reading on the way the watch works, it does not count calories as well using heart rate for weights. I have always noticed that with heart rate monitors so that is not a problem. Total time was 95 minutes and calories burned 483. It was nice working out without the strap. Fit bit gives all kinds of stats so it will be fun playing with it and watching all of the graphs. It shows so many stair climbs which seems funny since I go up and down stairs a lot. I am unsure of how it calculates that though. Right now it says 6 floors?? It has me at 7818 steps so far today and that includes going to Walmart and Sprouts this morning.

Deb, my birthday is not for another 8 days. My husband just pulled it out last night and offered it to me early. I have been getting e mails on how it works and researching a bit, plus I got to set it up when it first came so I could go ahead and register the extended warranty for it. I never get tired of fitness and new gadgets :) My diffuser plugs in but if it has a timer and shuts off . If you put it to stay on it turns off when there is no longer anything in it. My daughter got the diffuser twice with her young living oils. She tried another one that looked like pottery and it was odd. I thought something was wrong with it when I was babysitting for her and unplugged it. I guess when it shuts off diffusing the flashes these bright LED flashes that looks like some electrical catastrophe. It worried me. She got rid of it. I would not think that a battery operated one would work well. I got mine from Melaleuca. Spraying in the air periodically is nice. I have not used my diffuser as much this summer. It seems like it makes the humidity seem worse. That is probably because it is by my stool at the kitchen counter. I was using some oils for the allergies but it made me sweat worse.

Valerie, I am not sure what the difference is with pillow top mattresses. I would love to have something different. My husband is happy with ours. I put a 2 inch memory foam topper on it but I researched for on that did not make a person sweat. I read lots of complaints on that. Still it is not comfortable to me. We gave our granddaughter a queen size bed that we had purchased for out guest room at our last home. I miss that bed. It was so comfy and the mattress was not at the top of the line expense. When I couldn't sleep or wanted to take a nap I would go to the guest room. I have never slept well on the one we have and that is why I tried the memory foam.

Lynda, that must be one of the newer live workouts. When I do the dvd I usually do the less impact version but my problem with that is it repeats the gliding disc portion which I am not real fond of and has the core with upper emphasis. It hurts my knee doing jacks with a band around my ankles.

Good evening ladies!

No workout today. Left early to bring my husband to the airport then worked late tonight. I am tired so taking it easy.

Diane Sue...I tried to keep moving inbetween sets but I am inpatient! enjoy your Blaze and all the other gadets you recently got! I have done that with my apple watch. Hit pause and not realizing it. Hate when I do that. The workout Lynda did is new. Was from this past Thursday.

Valerie...I recently did the CUB standing only premix and liked it a lot. Still may be to tough for them listening to what you have mentioned. The KCM DVD Deb mentions sounds like this may work. I wish you luck. It is great you are trying to get them motivated. Leslie Sansone is a great choice. Jessica Smith is too. She has a lot of beginner workouts on YouTube and her Walk Strong dvd's are great and have modifiers. Our mattress is a pillow top that we have had now for about 8 years. We recently put a 3 inch memory foam on it and we are very comfy. Mattresses are so personal. Everyone is different. Our sheets our 1500 thread count and they seem to have a cooling affect for us. We buy them on Amazon and love them!

Deb...sounds like you took care of the boiler issues without any expenses. Love when that happens. We are looking forward to the puppy. Hoping our other animals will adjust.

Lynda...I like the workout is short and I love anything with firewalkers. But it sounds like a great workout with or without them! The plan is to try this tomorrow so we will see. I have had this yearning for Tabatacise so this may fit the bill. I cherish when my son comes to visit even when he is here only for a short time. Where does he live?

Tomorrow the plan is to go to Sears to buy a stackable washer and dryer. I am very excited about this and I am completely staying away from BestBuy!!! :)

Have a great weekend all!

,Valerie,

I would look at theclip before you order...make sure your SIL can do those moves. There are other KCM's that are more weight lifting focused... like Muscle Definition, and many others They all have great premixes too.

I did total body metabolic as planned.

Deb, I almost ordered that dvd then decided to look at a couple of the other people before I do. . that is generally what I am looking for.... but I think there might be too much leg involvement. Coffey Meyers is a pleasant low key instructor and may be better than Cathe. I will look at a couple of the Lori mentions too. It is my thought that SIL's first impression will be how this goes overall, so I want to be careful and not get anything too hard, but also not insultingly easy. I will be guessing. I thought for sure she could do push ups against a half wall. easy, no strain on anything to my judgement. I know she has some light dumbbells.

I absolutely hate memory foam. I feel like sinking into it is most unpleasant. I get very warm on it for the brief time I've spent. I usually take the topper off, or go on the floor. almost all new mattresses have some combo of pillow top structure, but I get over heated. cotton sheets are a help in heat control. more later.

I always buy high thread count cotton sheets. I remember my mother complaining about sheets when I was young and they put polyester in everything. She always said they got little pill balls on them and were rough and uncomfortable. I had some like that once and never purchased them again.

Valerie, Kelly has an older workout that is weights and I believe is divided into an upper and a lower body workout. Also I think Body Shop is pretty light. It has premixes. I used it after I had knee surgery quite a bit. Even the cardio was mostly boxing moves with a few moves that I modified. There s an upper only premix on it. Check Kelly's website. She has worksheets with the moves and lists of the premixes for each workout.

Deb, here is the link where I got the idea for a spray to help with allergens. https://draxe.com/essential-oils-for-allergies/

Good morning,

I traded a workout yesterday for stripping the wallpaper in our front entranceway. I think the workout would have been easier. I don't know what we were thinking when we put that in there...never again. I have some in the half bath too that is going to go.

Lynda, I looked at the clip of that Crossfire Live workout....nope....not for me...I sold the DVD and that reminded me why I did. What movie are you planning on seeing? The dog show is for obedience, we have both dogs entered.

Valerie, why the poor sleep? is all because of the mattress? If so, get a new one right away! We have a pillow top, I never tried memory foam but I heard that a lot of people really like it. Yes, the KCM's are all pretty basic, and she has good premixes like Diane Sue mentioned. Body Shop is a good one.

Diane Sue, that was so sweet for your husband to give you that gift early. I think I am going to keep with the homemade air freshener spray. The one I make lasts all day in the house. I have a verbena scented oil that I use to make it. I think I will try some citrus scent next. Thanks for the link, I will check that out.

Lori, those sheets sound wonderful...I think I will look them up. I have always bought sheets from Land's End...not sure why. They are good, but not cooling like you mentioned. Why a stackable washer & dryer?

Hi to Judy, Josie & Caitlin,

Agility class this morning then we have another anniversary party, 25 years this time. It is so hot and it will be outside... 88 degrees...

Take care,

Deb, I love verbena scent. I amusing Myers lemon verbena laundry soap right now. There are lots of scent ideas and mixes on pinterest. Stripping Wallpaper is a lot of work. I remember trying to avoid pulling off the finish on the wallboard. It will be a real change when you are done.

Yesterday turned out interesting .. I did my workout, showered, jumped in the car about 3 to head for Costco. I was heading for the freeway and saw smoke ahead. but all these cars were going by without acting like anything was wrong. I got to the spot.. flames are in brush and 15 feet up a huge tree already. I drove in the driveway, called 911, and pounded on the door to see if anyone was there. Pointed out the fire to her, asked if she had a hose that would reach. by this time another car stopped and we hooked up the hoses, and hosed it down as best we could. there was an outbuilding right there. flames were scorching the side of the building. it was under control by the time the fire trucks arrived. I could not believe all these people drove by & not called 911. this is a busy road. they were very close to losing a shed with a lot of equipment and a tractor inside. when I came home and saw the burned area , I was so glad I stopped and did something. geez. you can't assume "somebody else" did it or will do it.

Deb, we bought the pillow top because I thought it was comfortable! I have since eaten my words. I was having sleep problems I blamed on other things. I've slept on pillow tops in hotels, rental houses, relatives homes and I can't stand them. Every single one holds heat. I start out OK but wake later with the whole bed surface is too hot. DH doesn't sleep in our bed when it's warm. he gets over heated too, usually in the middle of the night. all seems OK at first but every calorie of heat you generate stays in those pillowy fibers. wakes us both up.
Diane sue that is too funny..little pill balls". yes! those old sheets did that. I tried 100% cotton and loved it. at first it used to wrinkle but they must treat it with something because not an issue any longer. much much cooler!

anyway, off to look at workouts. thanks for all of your suggestions .
I looked at a bunch of things, but decided the one Deb( thanks for doing my shopping!) mentioned, the KCM 'Start Here". If there are moves she can't do, she will have to skip them and move on. I'll see how it goes for her.

I am still getting used to this Fit Bit Blaze. I was doing great with Rock Out Knock Out till I put on the gloves. They turned the watch off. When I discovered it I put on my weighted gloves repeated the 6 minutes lost and logged that 6 minutes. I also did the heavybag portion but I wore my leather combat gloves an put them tight below the watch when wrapped it. I couldn't punch as hard. I still got in a good workout. Total for this workout ended up being 71 min. 449 calories, avg hr. 137 max hr 177 ?? I then did Muscle Meltdown Shoulders, 15 minutes, 50 calories, Pyramid Chest only, 7 minutes 11 calories (I hate chest work) and finished with Ab Circuits Yoga based abs, 15 minutes, 28 calories. My workout was 1 hour 49 minutes and calories burned 538. The Fit Bit does not pick up on weight work well.
I am not worried about it though. It is nice not having a strap.
Muscle Meltdown 3 rnds 5 exercises 12 reps
overhead press 15; 15; 12
upright row 15; 15; 15
standing side lateral 8; 8; 8
front raise 15: 15; 15
rear delt on ball 8; 8; 8
Pyramid chest 12, 10, 8, 10, 12 reps 12; 15; 20; 15; 12 #

Valerie, I bet the woman was grateful that you showed up. I would imagine that most people would just guess someone else had reported the fire. We Called 911 once when we saw a field on fire and trees were burning. No house real near but obviously not a controlled burn. You went beyond what a lot of people would do.

Hi Everyone,

Wednesday I did XTrain Burn Sets-Chest, Back & Shoulders. Thursday I did 4 DS Legs & Core, then the XTrain 100 rep challenges for Triceps & Biceps. I took a rest day yesterday and am getting ready to do a stretching session. I feel like I need a few days of "active rest". I started on the low dose HRT this week and will see how it goes.

Tomorrow we will be looking at some more houses.

Deb-I did try a supplement with Black Cohosh in it and it bothered my stomach. I know lots of women have good results with it though.

Lynda-I agree, I think every is different regarding menopause. I don't remember my mother saying anything about hot flashes and I know she didn't take anything, so I don't think that she had a hard time with menopause.

Valerie-I've also had hot flashes along with chills. I will put a hoodie on because I'm cold then take it off 5 minutes later because I feel like I'm burning up. I've never had any female health problems either, until menopause. I like the idea of tapering the HRT, and only using it as long as I need it.
That's great that you stopped and helped with the fire. Unbelievable that no one else stopped and just assumed someone else would take care of it.

Lori-I have heard a lot about progesterone cream. That's definitely something I will look at too. I bet you can't wait to get your new puppy! I can't wait to see photos! Chris is already talking about us getting a puppy when we move to a house...

Diane Sue-Nice that you got your birthday present early! Great workout today!

Hi to Josie & Caitlin!

Judy

Did CUB and Icy core 1. went fine. I really don't like the windmills, they feel awkward and potentially troublesome. I would not add weight over 5 to those.

Deb, I don't think she can get into trouble with 'start here". I can't see the whole workout but most of it seems benign especially with < 5 lb dumbbells. I don't have her health problems but she has let herself get pretty (very) overweight in the midsection. I know abs are "made in the kitchen" but she can probably turn around the type 2 diabetes if she gets a little weight loss going soon, and the treadmill is not working. .

Judy my understanding is that if you have not had any "parts" removed, you need to take estrogen in combo with progesterone. prempro was one drug combo, there were others I don't know all the names. people who have had a hysterectomy can take plain premarin...... without progesterone. I manipulated things taking both.......... started at full dose,. and then dropping the dose to 5 days, 4 days 3 days, etc.

back when my mother went thru menopause, she had a hysterectomy, and was immediately placed on high dose HRT. I don't think there was much discussion as it was thought this would keep women "young". she ended up with breast cancer, a curable type, but I think related to long term high dose hormones. I had decided would never take HRT, and then reality interfered. I was incredibly stunningly miserable. I have concerns about things like black cohosh, and others like red yeast rice (for cholesterol) because they may be natural but the concentrations are not measured or regulated. poison oak is perfectly natural and so are bee stings, but look at the trouble they can cause some people. kjust because it's natural doesn't mean it's OK and doesn't need to be regulated. .
