Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 8/14

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Strong Upper Body Express live (40 min.).

I needed a short workout because of a morning meeting with our financial advisor. Unfortunately the humidity seems to be back.

Diane Sue, I am pretty sure I could not do those yoga moves. I am very impressed.

Deb, I don't think he should leave his spent shells anywhere. Bad gun etiquette according to Kim and the young man who works for him who is a hunter. I always get a good heart rate on Cathe's boxing workouts, especially if she does hiits with flurries and football runs.

Lori, if you are a Vigo Mortensen fan, you will like him in this film. I should watch the LOTR films again. Or read the books again. I am currently reading Liane Moriarty's Truly Madly Guilty and really enjoying it. At first, some of the reviews at Amazon discouraged me, but I have really liked all of her books, so went ahead. I think she has an ability quickly to establish strong characterizations and plot complications with no easy resolutions.

Today I did Kelly Coffey's Amped Up Cardio Live combined workouts, no drills. This was 44 minutes and I burned 281 calories. I then did Gym Style Triceps adding on the warm up and stretch 32 minutes, 94 calories. I added on Amy Ross drop set strength triceps , 7 minutes, 28 calories, and finished with Cathe's Yoga Relax 28 minute premix, 45 calories. I used the Bluetooth heart rate monitor today. It did not seem to drop out or sky rocket. 452 calories total, 1 hour 49 minutes. I was tired and not really feeling it today. I put in multiple workouts after Kelly's and would start and take them back out. Not much sleep has been happening here lately. I told my husband going to bed at night is more of a struggle than anything else. Just trying to get comfortable when the joints hurt, coughing and sneezing , and then add on nightmares. I am awake half of the night. I started Tart Cherry juice again at night along with my protein powder before I go to bed. The claims are that it helps get a good night sleep. I am waiting for that to happen. I added spirulina to my greens along with the butterbur capsule. It is supposed to be a histamine blocker. I just mixed it into my greens drink this morning. Hopefully that helps.

Linda, it is kind of funny that I can do crow and balance but when it comes to Cathe's levitation holds I have to have one foot on the floor. I just cannot get balanced into it.

Good evening ladies..

Ugh could not get up this morning. When I finally did I really did not have time to workout so I did SB's Bis and Tris target which is only 6 minutes. I did it twice so it was 12 mins. :). Even though it is was only a 12 min workout my arms felt it and glad I did something. Was a high rep non stop the entire time. Tonight KCM's new workout 2. Really like this DVD and glad I bought it.

Diane Sue...good for you that you can do those yoga moves. They look painful to me! I have Cathe's Yoga workouts and have only done them once. Hoping you can get some relief with your sleeping.

Deb...I checked out the JS Cardio Ballet and it is not for me. Too much Ballet and not enough Barre. Good for you doing it though. JS does has better barre workouts if you want to get the taste of it. On SB's new DVD that I just bought there is a promo code for a free month of her streaming (no credit card required). Code is BARREAMPED you should try it out for fun. You may get hooked though!

Lynda...love that express workout. Short and you feel great afterwards! Just talking about LOTR I now want to watch them. My husband is traveling for a wedding this weekend...gone Friday thru Sunday...I may have to have a LOTR and The Hobbit marathon!

Have a great night all!

Lori, I have had Barre Amped Strengthen and stretch in my save and compare list on Amazon for about a week. It looks good. I saw Suzanne Bowen on a youtube with Dr Axe the other day. She was showing him how to do barre work. I think when the allergies kick in it leads to more inflammation elsewhere and coughing at night increases neck pain. I ordered some of Dr Axe Collagen powder for joints. It has several different varieties of collagen together in it with a couple of anti inflammatory herbs. It hasn't arrived yet. My other collagen powder is almost gone. I don't want to be without it because my fingers start locking and I notice more knee pain.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Leslie Sansone-walk at home 5 boosted miles& XTrain Burn Sets, Biceps & Triceps. Total time was 1 hr and 40 minutes and calories burned was 440. Today I did a 2 hour Spinerval, 33 miles and 642 calories.

We had some heavy rains come through last night and we lost power from around 6 am to 10 am. I'm so happy it wasn't out all day.

Deb-you should try SB Barre streaming for a month, I bet you would like it.

Lynda-it's very humid here too. The temperature is about 20 degrees lower than last week but very muggy.

Lori-We got the Fluff and tried it out. Chris had a fluffernutter sandwich and really liked it. :) I had some mixed with peanut butter, no bread. I liked the taste, but it's so sweet I don't think I will have it too often. I can see why so many people like it though. It would be easy to eat right out of the jar.

Valerie-that is horrible that you have to put up with that casino :( I shouldn't complain about our condo-at least we don't have to deal with that kind of thing.

Diane-yes, the parking rule is terrible. The HOA has too much power. I'm sorry about your sleep problems. I can relate, as I have been having trouble sleeping too. I was awake half the night last night. I think my sleep issues are menopause related more than anything else. Usually I can go to sleep but I seem to wake up every 1-2 hours and last night I couldn't even go to sleep right away. It really wears you down after a while. I took a 2 hour nap this evening I was so tired.

Hi to Josie & Caitlin!

Judy

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, way too tired. I did get the shopping for the dog's food done, worked a couple hours at my cousins, and went to lunch with my uncle. He is amazing...87 years old, still drives, spry as can be and such a sweetheart.

Diane Sue, that is impressive that you can do those moves! I could never manage Cathe's levitation moves either. I feel for you with the sleeping...I hope the tart cherry juice helps. I didn't see much difference when I drank it, but I know that it has helped a lot of people. What do you think is causing nightmares? maybe a reaction to the butterbur? Can you link them to something you changed recently?

Lynda, the humidity has never left here...at least it come with a few downpours yesterday...it was great for the lawns and plants. Agree, he should be picking up those shells, no matter where they land...

Lori, those SB target workouts sound great when you don't feel like a long workout. Thanks for the code! Assume I need some type of app on my phone to stream it? Will check it out. Yes, the JS Ballet one was really ballet focused. I found a few shorter barre ones she has on youtube, will be trying those out. A LOTR and The Hobbit marathon sound perfect for you on solo weekend. :).

Judy, sorry about the sleep issues...it could be menopause...are you having hot flashes as well? Nothing wears you down like lack of sleep. Good that you were able to take a nap and get some sleep in. Hope last night was better for you.

Hi to Josie, Valerie, & Caitlin,

A workout, then making dog food, class tonight, and the dreaded dog club monthly meeting...ugh

Take care,

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live High Energy Kickboxing (48 min.). Really liked this one--a definite 5. I wore my 1 lb. gloves. Cathe didn't wear gloves on this one.

Diane Sue, maybe you should take some rest days or not workout so long if you are having joint pain along with your allergies and nightmares. It doesn't sound like you are really enjoying your workouts, but pushing yourself to add more calorie burn.

Deb, that's wonderful about your uncle. I have a friend who is 90 and she is energetic and so positive about everything. She still runs a b and b during the summer in her home. My MIL is 87 and sharp and lovely too.

Judy, menopause really affected my sleep too, but I had night sweats and kept flinging the covers off and on, off and on. What a pain! Things calmed down a bit when I started taking estradiol. Depends on how you feel about HRT. For me, it was a lifesaver because I had to teach, and hot flashes in the middle of a class were killing me. Everyone is different.

Lori, that sounds like a lovely way to spend a weekend alone--with hobbits, wizards, ents, dwarves, orcs--in a completely different world.

Today I did Ice Low Impact Sweat workout 1 no stretch, 25 minutes, 153 calories. I then did Ripped With Hiit Low Impact Hiit 1 and 2 combined, 51 minutes, 336 calories. I finished off with Ice Muscle Meltdown Biceps 4 rounds mix, 30 minutes, 136 calories. Total time was 1 hour 45 minutes and calories burned 625.
Biceps 4 rnds 5 exercises 12 reps each
standing curl 20, 17.5,17.5, 17.5
hammer curl 20,17.5,17.5,17.5
preacher curl 15's; 15; 15; 12
incline hammer curl 15; 15; 15; 15
concentration curl 17.5; 17.5; 17.5; 17.5
I got in a bit more sleep last night. Maybe some of the things that I have been doing is helping. I am trying to eliminate a late snack as well. I was mixing some collagen into so organic kefir with some protein powder near bed time. I have read that eating too close to bed time slows down sleep because the body is busy taking care of what you just ate. So, I have my collagen mix shortly after dinner or late afternoon snack instead.

Deb, I had the nightmares before I started butterbur. It is another thing that is better if I do not eat too close to bedtime. I have read spicy food can lead to nightmares. I am not sure how much truth there is to that. When I was going through menopause I used black cohosh. It caused terrible nightmares for about 3 weeks. then tapered off. I would forget about that and stop taking it for awhile and when I started again I went through the nightmares again. It sure helped with the hot flashes and clamminess though. Your uncle sounds like an 85 year old friend of mine. That little woman is going all of the time. She is always laughing. Maybe that is key. She is such an upbeat person.
I was going to grind up some chicken for Gertie last night but ended up having family for dinner so it went to the family. She had some of the I and Love and you canned dog food in her food last night and this morning. I put up all of the treats that has wheat in them and she seems fine with my homemade ones and a few of the limited ingredient ones. For the cost of some of the better canned foods it is probably cheaper to do the cook up of chicken. Gertie usually will not just eat the dry food alone.

Linda, I was thinking today that I am probably pushing the cortisol levels which is not a good idea when there is inflammation in the body. I have been working to bring my weight back down some. Generally when I do longer workouts there is a longer yoga/stretch type workout involved.

Lynda-if you don't mind my asking, how long did you take HRT and was it difficult to get off of? I had an appointment with my doctor this morning and he gave me a prescription for Mimvey Lo (low dose estradiol & progestin) for my hot flashes and sleep issues. I had planned on getting through menopause without HRT but hot flashes and lack of sleep has gotten worse the past few months.

Good evening ladies!

This morning I did several SB targets then one of her hiit workouts. Really great workouts. The plan tonight was to use the battle ropes but I worked later than anticipated and to tired now.

Deb...I love her targets. They are great for a short workout or as a finisher to another workout. Usually I string a few together for a longer workout. Forgot to mention the puppies. My friend's dog sired (is that the word?) two litters and they both had the puppies within two days. Both of the female dogs are owned by the same person. The sad thing is the yellow female had 5 puppies (all black). They seemed to be healthy but all died in the night. They think she rolled on them and they suffocated. Poor mommy. The chocolate female had 11 puppies (Black and Chocolate) and she has been overwhelmed with nursing so the yellow one that lost her babies has been helping out. She is missing her babies and has accepted some as hers. Seems like this was meant to be. So it looks like with all these chocolate and black labs we will get what we want which is a female chocolate or black. What are the chances that all 11 are male!! They will be ready for pick up 6 to 8 weeks from now. She lives in Philadelphia so Bob and I will take a road trip over a weekend to bring her home. :)

Diane Sue...I love her new BarreAmped stretch DVD's. Very please with this purchased. I agree with Lynda. Perhaps a couple of days off may do you good. I have a hard time mentally doing this but know at times it is needed.

Judy... Glad Chris enjoyed the Fluffernutter! Yes fluff is very sweet. I do not know how my coworker eats it right from the jar. I had unbelievable hot flashes and night sweats and sleepless nights. I did not want to take HRT so I tried a progesterone cream my pharmacist recommended. We have a small country pharmcy in the middle of town and he sells some natural rememedies. He talked me into it and it was amazing. It was expensive about $45 for just over a month. Took a few weeks to kick in but once it did I was sleeping thru the night and hot flashes were more manageable. One day I figured I did not need it any more because I was feeling great so I stopped. Big mistake! Quickly went back on. After a year or so once I had absolultely had no hot flashes I stopped and never had to go back on. I was fortunate that my hot flashes lasted just over a year and then I was done. Sometimes they can drag on.

Lynda....Yes great kickboxing workout! I now may watch the Harry Potter movies this weekend. I have only seen the first 3 so leaning towards this. Of course I will watch on our 120inch screen!!!

Have a great night all!

Judy I think it was a year. I had other issues, bleeding from fibroids so for awhile it was also a combination with the estrogen.

Judy I had awful trouble with hot flashes and sleeping. I had an abrupt menopause at 46-47. all was normal one month and then everything quit. I had hot flashes so bad I was panting. It alternated with shaking chills . then I would get loaded with 6 blankets, and it would reverse and in seconds I was so hot I was dripping. I was OK during the day, but nights were one extreme to the other. I had this thing where the skin on my legs felt like I had a rubber wet suit on over my skin. I can't explain it better than to say when I rubbed my legs it didn't feel like it was me. I lasted 6 or so weeks without meds. ( I was someone who smugly said I would just "ignore" the symptoms). I barely slept for at least a month, so exhausted I had a car wreck besides. so I told my doc it was not negotiable, I needed HRT, because I was not going to live if these symptoms continued. I took it for about 10 years although not full strength. started full strength and then tapered way down by using smaller does and then fewer days a week.
I know it's not true for everyone but menopause took my sex drive down to zero and that was also a reason I kept HRT going as long as I did. I had all my "parts" and never had any other problems until menopause. it was a challenge. I still would not hesitate to take HRT if it helps, but just taper as is possible. I used to taper until the flashes started up and would slightly up the dose until they quieted down. I was OK during the day but at night I was getting almost no sleep at all. went from hot to cold, hot to cold, it was horrendous. I had to "sleep" in another room because I kept us both up all night.

more tomorrow, too tired tonight.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. I did do agility class with Kylee. A good club meeting last night, I actually was able to go right to sleep when we got home.

Lynda, you are really exploring the Live kickbox workouts...:). Thanks for the review..another one for my future "to do" list.

Diane Sue, I agree with others...maybe time for a rest/stretch/yoga only week? Give the joints some down time? I also read that snacking close to bedtime can interfere with sleep. You are probably right about the cost of the good canned foods being more than making your own. As long as you are giving her some type of food ( the dry) that has vitamins and minerals in it. I am sure she would not turn her nose up to the chicken! :).

Judy, have you tried the black cohash? Lots of women have had good results from it. It helped my cousin a lot. She didn't have to take it for very long, but everyone is different.

Loiri, a new puppy! so exciting. :). Any reason why you are going with a female this time? So sad about the litter that did not make it, but good that she is able to help out with the other ones. .

Hi to Valerie, & Josie,

A workout of some sort I hope, and painting, if it clears up. It rained overnight again... Yay! :)

Take care,

Diane Sue/Lori,

have you have used essential oils for improving the air in your home? If so, what do you recommend? Is this something you can get on Amazon? I have read in Pinterest that there are good ones and "not so good" ones....

Valerie, I had a hysterectomy for cancer in my late 30's but kept my ovaries. It seemed peri menopause was forever. My doctor put me on Evista when I was about 48. I think I was on it for 2 years but I took myself off of it. Before menopause I always had piles of blankets when I slept. But during they were on and off and I would get so wet that I changed the sheets daily.

Deb, Gertie is back on her regular amount of dry food with the Castor and Pollux. I think she would even be happy if I tossed in a spoon of pumpkin only. She is doing great now. I have a hard time backing off on my workouts. Over the years it has become so routine that I have to remind myself that I can skip a day.

We went out yesterday to switch to AT&T. We ended up coming home with all of these new deals. Both of us got the Galaxy S7 on bogo, then my husband got a tablet and a new galaxy gear watch for free with just paying tax and service. I spent last night adding back in apps and reactvating them. We have to go back to the store today though to troubleshoot my husband's messaging on the tablet. It is in my name and I take notes so I guess I need to go. It was near 3 hours setting things up yesterday and my allergies kicked in. I ate all of the cough drops in my purse while sitting there. This time I am taking water with me.

Deb,

Oh my I remember that yoga pose. I could "kind of/ sort of" do it but not well. could get up and balance for very brief moments but I didn't like it and it was not "easy" like in the video. not everyone's body proportions fit together like that. I never could do levitation holds either. tried for years, and finally quit annoying myself. I was not doing something right as I was sure I was strong enough.

lori.. that is so dad about the puppies. Hope you still can get what you want.

we did a road ride yesterday on the way back from our trip. it was very nice, about 20 miles. if we'd been staying the night we would have gone longer but we still had a long awful congested drive ahead so we cut it short.

I took the Ice series with me but this is beyond what SIL can do. Plus, she is the one with the knee replacement that doesn't work very well. surely her fault to some degree because she didn't go to PT even though everyone told her to.. I still would like to get her an upper body workout. she and DH use a treadmill and a recumbent bike almost daily but they need to do more and I think she's maxed out on what her crummy knee can tolerate.
I need upper body workouts for someone who doesn't have any fitness there, and who can't get on her knees. so that means no knee pushups, or any of the cathe moves on her knees or her back with lighter weights.
she says she can't even do wall pushups because it hurts her neck. she has another other medical issue there too. really easy, really basic weights. Is Collage video still around? they used to have a variety of things starting very basic, but I was thinking they went out of business years ago. I think most of the titles we talk about are WAY beyond what she can expect to do. I got some interest from her but ,moves I thought basic and easy were not.

Today I did Ice Lower Body Blast with core 2, 61 minutes, 325 calories. Weights ranged from 4-10#heavier than Cathe's. I then did 21 Day Fix Extreme Pilates, 34 minutes (I did some stretching while it was loading) 104 calories. Total time 96 minutes, calories burned 439.

Deb, I have an oil diffuser that I use. I mix different oils for different effects. Sometimes I just use an oil that is a blend. I would go for a good quality oil like Young Living. There are several. I think Dr Axe has some too on his website. I tried some Aura Cacia from the store in frankincense and it left a greasy residue ring in the diffuser. The higher quality one I got from Melaleuca never did that. Some companies add inferior products and dilute with other oils. Doterra is another one that is supposed to be good. I have not used it. I just closed my melaleuca account because I hated being required to purchase a set amount of points every month. About 65 dollars worth of product plus shipping. I may go back though if I cannot find quality products for the price I was getting. They said I have 6 months. I also have a mixture in a spray bottle that I spray around in the air that is supposed to help with allergens in the air. Gertie runs when I spay it. Then she sneaks back in the room. I believe it has lemon and tea tree oil in it. I really do not remember what I put in it. I have to go find it again. I keep it in the workout room.

Valerie, that is too bad that the Ice workout would not work. Even slowly working into something would probably help her health a lot.

I forgot to mention the Acacia frankincense was 14.95 and the Melaleuca was 40.00.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live Metabolic Mashup (51 min.). Surprised at how these metabolic workouts with their compound moves get the heart rate up with the weights. Cathe talks about them building "stamina" in this workout.

Lori--how exciting to look forward to a new pup. That is sad about losing so many pups. Sows do this a lot to piglets, but I didn't think dogs had this problem. Enjoy the Harry Potter films. I saw them all in the theater, but they seem to be constantly on television too.

Judy, I really think everyone is different on menopause. It didn't hit me until I was in my 50s, and went on until I was 57 and had a laparoscopic hysterectomy. I still have my ovaries and cervix, but I had a fibroid the size of a grapefruit that caused a lot of bleeding and made me anemic. After the hysterectomy, everything seemed to calm down and I stopped the estradiol. I still remember complaining to my mom, and she kept saying, "Well your sisters didn't have any problems and neither did I," like it was my fault or something. Very annoying.

Valerie, take a look at totalfitnessdvds.com and if you find something there use promocode 10off. I think there are some upper body workouts for people who are chair bound. I have two friends who have had both knees replaced, and they were warned in advance that the PT was the most important part of their recovery and it takes time and absolute dedication. Both of them lead very active lives--hiking, birdwatching, swimming, cycling. One of them had both knees replaced at the same time, the other one at a time, about 6 years apart.

Deb, it sounds like your new club President is working well--no melodrama!

Diane Sue, that's a lot of time adjusting to your new tech gadgets!

Good evening ladies...

This morning was the 2nd portion of the 2016 Summer Kick Off. I love doinf this section for a little total body workout. Doing this section with a warm up and the cool down works out to about 30 minutes. I then did a battle rope workout. Was about 45 mins total. Forgot my HR monitor and I did not want to go back upstairs to get it. I love wearing it when doing the battle ropes. My HR is high and burning crazy calories for a quick workout.

Deb..we want a girl to have a complete opposite of Chester. He left such a hole in our hearts we felt it best. If the puppies were yellow labs then we would not get one. Agility class is your workout! Awesome to have a good nights sleep after your meeting. This is a first! I am a real newbie with essential oils. Glad Diane Sue chimmed in!

Diane Sue...I remember you mentioning at one point about the cancer. Must have been very scary for you. I like the Ice Lower Body Blast but felt there was too long of a rest inbetween for me....so using my Ipad I was able to adjust to my liking. This is why I love having her downloads. With her newest preorder I bought just the downloads. First time I have done this.

Lynda...metabolic workouts really get my HR up. Not sure if I have done the mashup. Today's live looks great. I will be bringing my husband to the airport early tomorrow so I will not be able to do a morning workout. I hope to get this in when I get home from work.

Valerie...that is too bad about the Ice workouts not working for your inlaws. My lunch ladies have come a long way. I have been so busy at work and they have been working out without me a couple times a week. I set them up with a workout of the day and they go for it! A few months ago if I was not working out they did not either. Next week I should be able to join them. Collage video is still around. They have new owners that brought the site back up. I would use Totalfitness before Collage though as Lynda mentioned. They have tons of dvds and a great reputation.

Have a great night all!
