Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/8

Good morning,

Garance, so sorry about your knee! Like Valerie said, after all that you do with Cathe etc, where you could "almost" understand an injury, it has to be depressing. What exactly happened? Did you fall or did he jump on you etc? Hope you get into the Ortho and it only needs to be iced and rested.

Valerie, I mentioned to DH that you ordered a new Outback, and now he wants to go look at them. He really wants me to get a new car. I am not sure why, since there is nothing wrong with my 2008 Forester. It only has 30K miles on it.

Josie, did you do Cathe Plyometrics from STS?

Hi to Joan.

What is everyone doing this weekend?

"New Car Fever" it's a contagious disease!! Our Forester is an 04, close to 100,000 miles hard miles but we'll keep it as a trailhead car.... as long as it's reliable and doesn't cost too much to keep running safely. DH has an 03 Toyo Corolla . it's only got 55,000 miles but when it snows it's useless and it has very low clearance so not good on mountain roads. we're trading that in. it has a rear spoiler so we can't put a bike rack on it either. does get great gas mileage. our truck is reserved for camper/heavy loads. costly to drive and big. great for when we need that, but not a great "around the neighborhood" vehicle. we want two all weather vehicles so when we get snow I don't get stuck here because DH needs the AWD car.

we thought the Outback seemed more solidly built than the Forester this time. otherwise they are quite similar. we are not big on fancy options. got the winter package for the better mirrors, wipers. I don't like sunroofs or fancy electronics. expensive stuff to malfunction. my experience with GPS is that it is wrong more often than it's correct and I think the screen is distracting

Lynda.. do you know what kind of move hurt your knee? I'm thinking a rambunctious dog can hit you right at knee level and maybe hyperextend the joint sideways or backwards stressing the ACL or MCL. Hope you can see an orthopod today and get a professional opinion. lots of time rest, elevation, ice, nonsteroidals are the best option. I have a shelf of various knee braces for past injuries.
I used cycling as a rehab method after my ACL problems. I had numerous injuries before learning my ACL was a slime thread. I'd take a misstep and hurt my knee, would swell and get stiff. I rehabbed that knee a dozen times! I'd spend several days with the rest, elevation, ice, nonsteroidals and then start cycling. a stationary bike lets you work the area but keeps your knee inside limited motion parameters. I used the same for rehab After ACL surgery. I was on the bike on sunday morning after friday surgery.

Valerie, I feel like you about all the "gadgets" they offer on cars nowadays. My 1994 Saab turbo doesn't even have a cup holder!! Now that I would want.

Garance, I cringe when I think about ACL surgery, as it reminds me of my poor Kelsey that went through it at 13. She took a long time to recover, about 3 months total, but of course, it's hard to get a dog to do all that a person can to recooperate.
I hope you find out what it is soon and that's it's something that rest/ice can cure.

TIFN....lunch time almost over..

So many people buy for gadgets.... I don't care about heated seats! that section of my anatomy is never going to get cold enough to need heat. we have them on the 04 forester and it's a fun way to annoy DH... turn on the seat heater!

my neighbor had a cadillac for a year...with all the gizmos, like tire sensors. the sensors tended to malfunction and it she was afraid it would shut down the vehicle itself and keep her from driving. no way to over ride the sensor and of course, nothing wrong with the tire. and the dealer could never figure out what was wrong because it didn't malfunction when the vehicle was there. the list is endless ...back up cameras. self park mechanisms. I do appreciate air bags, safety related things. but there's some new "lane drift" technology, and some new "side approaching" sensor that might have helped Joan in her accident. some of that stuff will get damaged in even minor fender benders, making repairs way more expensive. but yes, cup holders must stay!

Saturday

Good morning,

Agility class last night was fun. Kylee is a natural. She loves it. Keegan's class this morning, then I think we are going to look at bikes.

Garance, I hope your apt turned out well and you are going to be able to go on vacation.

Valerie, DH has the Forester that I wanted, but it wasn't available when I got mine in 2007. ( it's a 2008). It is black, with black leather and a nice sun roof. I could do without the sun roof, but I really wanted a black one. Mine is steel grey, with dark grey fabric interior. I like the dark red one too. I definitely would get dark interior if fabric. He had tan in his Escape and it looked awful after 5 years. My Saab has grey leather, it's 18 years old and it looks brand new.

Off for breakfast and then hope to get some HouseMax done around here before class..

Take care,

I don't think I've ever had a black car. it rains so much here and we drive on gravel roads sometimes several times a week.. dark colors look awful. I had company cars for almost 20 years and went thru a lot of different colors and settled on neutrals being best for us. I love how dark colors look when clean and spiffy but not going to happen here very often! I didn't want beige interior ...this is cloth/leather and dark gray. my current medium gray is nice, never looks bad and is easy to clean. I never could get the thrill of sunroofs. I don't like the bright light coming over the tops of my sunglasses and I like the air conditioning running. I never liked convertibles either. I'm an outdoors girl but not that much wind.

Did disk 11 so that's all of mesocycle 1. I'm not taking a week off in between, maybe a couple days. depends on what we do this weekend. weather got weird and very rainy/thunderstormy yesterday afternoon. we donb't get thunder lightning down low here very often and it was pretty exciting. was doing garden work and had to go in and out a couple thousand times it seemed.

Lynda, check in and let us know you're OK. you can restart STS or some other upper body workouts while your knee rests and gets better.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

Just checking in. I had to go to the emergency room because I was in so much pain on Thursday. I have a crack in my patella and they drained a lot of bloody fluid which reduced the painful pressure. Of course the er doctor is not very good at this, so it was pretty painful. He gave me a giant brace to immobilize the knee.

Yesterday I saw my orthopedic surgeon, and he drained a lot more fluid (he is a lot better at this), gave me a softer knee brace for stabilization (because he wants me to regularly bend my knee), and told me it would take 6-8 weeks for it to get back to my normal, which is a pretty questionable normal. I have a sub-luxating patella (sp?) and he said, the problem is that it doesn't take much (like Max bumping into my knee), for me to lock the knee defensively and with that pressure to crack it. What is a minor accident for others turns into a big problem for me. He broached the subject of knee replacement, because both of my knees are pretty bad, but then said, "Not yet," so I guess I must wait and plan on that for a later date. I actually thought he was going to say, "let's just replace this knee," but I guess not. He also said this has nothing to do with muscles, it's all about alignment and cartilage.

Anyway, we didn't leave today for vacation, and I don't think we can do this, because I'm really not walking all that well. I am improving. No longer with a crutch or cane, and increasingly able to bend my knee. I've been taking pain medication every 4-6 hours.

Not sure when I will be feeling mobile enough to do any exercise.

That is a bummer!! gosh, who'd think knees could be so fragile and unforgiving. max must have hit you just the wrong way.
DH has issues with knee alignment . and he's very bowlegged so i'm sure i will be learning more about knee motion. he had some swelling and tenderness after our hike last weekend and is talked about seeing an orthopod to get an opinion.

I've been thru knee rehab a lot of times. having good muscle support and being fit in all other areas will help immensely in how fast you get better. my SIL ( 58 yo)should be looking at knee replacement but she has such poor muscle and bone structure that they don't think it would "take"...so she will need to go on without.

Will this interfere with your planned vein procedure?

Hope you can get some vacation days in even if you ened to modify plans.
