Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/5

this is a video from the day before the ice cave collapse killed 1 and injured several more. you can see people go right back to the edge even after a section falls, and 4-5 people come out from deeper inside. it is SO easily accessible there really is no way to keep people away. when it's hot, it would be tempting because inside it's cool and beautiful. also deadly if the timing is against you.
mt rainier used to have ice caves but melting has eliminated them.

wow, I didn't know anything about Taye diggs. very handsome guy and good in this role. everyone is! a few average looking people but most are a little too good looking for real life. watching the last episode at lunch today.

I think of football, ice hockey as a "contact sports" with all the padding and helmets. I would guess (??) soccer is about like basketball, where there is definitely potential "contact" but less brutal than football. I'm kind of surprised they don't require some kind of helmet...but then the helmet itself can become sort of a weapon.

Judy I've never tried to brush my kitty's teeth. he only eats dry kibble so they stay pretty clean.

Good evening ladies!

No workout today. Came home yesterday evening and did not sleep well. It was so hard to say goodbye to Madeline. I am already planning my next trip to visit her.

Deb...I never got to the booty barre class and I was ok with it. Us girls (there were 4) decided to go to Macy's and shop all afternoon!!! When it was getting close to the time I needed to leave I let it pass. We were having way too much fun and spending way too much money!!! We all bought so much I ended up needing to put clothes in my DS' suitcase. :). Madeline would not be able to do the booty barre. She likes to walk but lately this is challenging for her. I was planning to go with her daughter.

Valerie...I agree with Judy you are getting some great rides in. My DS and his GF asked if I wanted to ride a rail trail they discovered. Not sure how many miles it is but looks like it would be fun. I missed the story about the ice caves. Sounds terrible.

Lynda...we flew Jet Blue. I find their prices are always great to Charlotte. I very rarely fly United thank goodness! So wrong about the pay structure. The game was amazing though! We loved watching it.

Judy...nice workouts! Good for you brushing their teeth. Sorry to say I was not very good brushing Nilla's. Considering her age though they are not too bad. Chester's are decent too. We give them the treats that suppose to brush them as they chew. I know I still should brush them.

Josie...my DS and I are very close and I am so fortunate. He and his GF have been together almost 5 years. I would love for them to get married and have babies! I can't imagine having a DIL that I did not care for. My heart breaks for you. It does seem that you get some great time in with your grandchildren which is so nice. They must adore you!

Dawn...I remember the first time I did the 1st Imax. I thought it was the hardest workout video ever! Did you finish up Xtrain? For the life of me I can not remember!

Have a good night all!

Good morning,

A nice day yesterday, walked/jogged with my cousin at the track, then did stuff around here, weeded for a while, cleaned out one of the junk drawers in the kitchen...this sounds crazy but it felt so good to do that.

Judy, how did the chiropractor appointment go yesterday? Is there improvement in your hip? My favorite on line vet ( Dr Karen Becker) did a video showing how to brush a cat's teeth...she used a cat that had never had it done, it didn't look too bad. She said to start with your finger, then slowly go to a brush. I have to get some pet toothpaste at the store before I start. Apparently human toothpaste is not good because of the floride.

Lynda, yes, raw bones are ok....but still good that he is with your DH in the truck and can be watched while eating. Maybe I should go to a butcher and pick up a couple raw marrow bones to see what our dogs would do...they have never had a bone.

Valerie, thanks for posting the video...the stupidity of people amazes me.

Lori, I can't imagine how hard it was to leave and say goodbye to Madeline. Nice shopping trip you had! Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. :). It's so great that you get along so well with your DS's GF. That makes so much of a difference in your relationship with your DS too.

90% chance of rain today, so not sure what I will be doing, a workout, and more HouseMax I guess,

Hi to Josie & Dawn,

Take care,

We did the jacks on our camper yesterday. all went pretty well. thought we might have gotten the wrong ones but first confirmed they were correct. as you sort of expect, one hole didn't match up. although the other 6 did. we put them on, decided we needed to drill a new hole, so took them off and then back on. they look and work well. really not that hard to do as we just replaced what was already there. we needed to get lumber for another project, so took the camper off the truck and went to lowes. lots of wood! need to build a rack to hold the camper when we're not using it. so no workout but a lot of heavy lifting.

Lori, that must have been tough. hopefully she will have a good response to therapy and you will have many more visits.

Still hot and dry here but moderating. also a lot of smoke from fires in British Columbia making for ugly air quality and poor visibility. seeing the pics from the mountains makes me not want to go at all. this is going to be a very tough summer if it doesn't rain soon.

we are riding again this morning. a trail ride since it's partial shade. supposed to be weather changes this by weekend. our garden is almost bloomed out already. we have a lot of area and usually don't water much at all. this year we could not possibly water enough to keep things alive. hoping we don't lose a lot of big plants. most are used to dry summers which is why we grow them, but this is beyond dry. it sounds so strange to hear all the rain you are getting.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did AB (54:00).

Judy, that bar is very interesting. You don't have to lean over to do the deadlift, but doesn't this make it more of a squat?

Valerie, I see what you mean about stupidity on those ice caves. I thought of you too after hearing about all the fireworks accidents. Some professional football players lost their fingers, and this is really stupid if you are a receiver--or just an adult for cripes' sake. That job sounds like a workout in itself. Yep, more rain headed our way. Everything is so green and lush right now.

Deb, yes, I bet your dogs would like a marrow bone, especially getting that marrow out. Max almost looks like he has hands when he holds it between his two paws and works at the center. He usually ends up burying the bone at a later date. We call it his bone garden, because on some occasions he digs them all up and there's a little exhibit of bones--at which point DH thinks it's time to throw them all out and Max can start over.

Lori, I flew back and forth to Oklahoma for one of my sisters several times, so, yes, I can imagine you will be making several trips. Is she doing chemo, radiation, both? It's too bad NC probably doesn't allow medical marijuana. I know it really helped one of my cousins deal with his issues after chemo. It sounds like you had fun despite everything.

Back from a 25 mile ride. very nice, went fast!.

The ice caves are a lot larger than it looks on that video. there is a huge steep accumulation of ice from avalanches that piles up there. some years it grows, some years it shrinks. this year with the heat and lack of snow, it's shrinking and the ceiling areas can collapse at any time. water running everywhere. it was a challenge getting the dead person out of there because rescuers could not safely walk in and retrieve the body. I believe they dynamited a hole and dropped in from the top. many many signs warning people to stay outside, but as you can see even when it's collapsing right in front of them, people waltz right in! the last death was a girl sitting 20 or so feet away who was hit by a large rock or chunk of ice. Like I said, it's a much larger area than it looks in a small pic.

yeah the guy who blew off his head with a firecracker will no doubt qualify for the Darwin awards. I wonder how much he had to drink first?

I used to give my dog big rawhide bones until we had an incident. he was outside and came to the door with something sticking out of his mouth. I pulled on it and it started to come out. so I kept pulling. out came the rawhide bone he'd unraveled and tried to swallow. it didn't bother him that much but I should have taken him to the vet immediately. I never gave him another.

Hi Everyone,

I woke up with a sinus headache and allergy symptoms so I decided to take it easy today. I did a stretch max segment this morning. I made an appointment with my ENT for tomorrow morning. I hope I don't have a sinus infection.

Deb-my chiropractor appointment went ok. My hip is better, but not 100%. I think I might have pushed it a little too much this week. Still better than it was before, but I'm going to take it easier for the next few days. I watched a video on youtube before I brushed their teeth too. It's not very hard. Shadow is easy to do, she doesn't mind it at all. Chino is more high strung and he fights it a little. Sometimes DH has to help hold Chino while I brush his teeth.

Lynda-yes, I think it's more like a squat. Maybe halfway between a squat and a deadlift. You can also do shoulder shrugs with it.

Valerie-great job on the rides! You are really getting some good mileage in!

Hi to Lori, Josie, & Dawn

Judy

No workout today ladies. Just wasn't feeling it. Madeline received the results and it is non small cell which would have been good if they caught it early. But with everything I have read when it is at stage 4 she has a 50/50 chance of being here in 8 months. Then it has metastasized so it does not look good which I knew last Thursday. I made up a video from our celebrating life this past weekend and I will post. There are a couple of silly jokes (poop) that you would only get if you were there. But it shows how we celebrated instead of mourning. My DS is the one with the tatoos. We are the first people picture and we are here and there throughout. Madeline is the redhead throughout. You do not need to watch it but at least you can see what I look like!!!

Judy...oh no! I had a sinus infection many years ago and it was horrible. Hope the headache can be controlled soon. Good idea to rest the hip.

Valerie...so sad about the ice caves...and yes that kid with the firecracker on his head. I read he pretty much blew his head off. Terrible.

Lynda...yup...that is what I will be doing...flying back and forth to Charlotte. She has another appointment of Friday that will plan her treatment. I am assuming chemo and radiation. She is so spiritual and really believes she is going to beat this. Such an amazing attitude. Lol! I can picture Max now with his bone garden!!! My little Nilla hides things throughout the house from Chester. It is very funny!

Himto Deb, Dawn and Josie!!

Good morning & Happy Friday!

Yesterday I did KCM's Split Sessions 2. (lower body)

It's a bit cool here right now, but it's supposed to get to the high 70's. I just hope no rain...it rained all day yesterday. Sheesh...how much more can there be? We were drowned with rain yesterday, flash flooding and all. John took off for fishing, got about 10 miles down the road and turned back, it was so bad he had to pull over and wait a bit before driving more.

Valerie, that was some job you did with those jacks. You and your DH are pretty industrious! The country seems to be upside down when it comes to rain...we are getting what you are supposed to have. Had a similar incident yesterday that you had....I bought a bag of those Greenies ( dog so-called dental bones) and gave them to them last night when we went to bed, good thing I didn't give them when we were out, Keegan tried to swallow the whole thing and I had to pull it out of his throat! They are going back to the store today.

Lynda, LOL at Max's bone garden. I need to get a couple and see what my dogs do with them. I will have to separate them when they have them though...it could start a little spat with how they are sometimes and I am sure they will be very territorial over them.

Judy, I hope you don't have a sinus infection...not fun.

Lori, that is so great that you made that video! I will watch in a bit. I am sure Madeline will treasure it.

Hi to Josie, & Dawn,

Having a "swim-lunch" with my nieces and cousin today at one of their houses, should be nice to all get together. Then agility class tonight...

Take care,

Deb, good you were there.. some dogs will eat anything! thinking about the dog who made internet news yesterday on all the clothing he ate. my aunt had a yellow lab who ate the drapery. they swallow but there's more fabric "connected" and no way to cut it off. her dog ended up having it surgically removed. my dog did the same thing with the rawhide "bone". he unraveled it so it was a long strip of flat material which he proceeded to swallow. it was a very weird sensation ( for me, and likely for him) to start pulling on it and have more and more come out. I threw it away and never bought another one. he got milkbones only after that.

DH is braver at mechanical things but I've got better and look at things differently than he does. together we balance each other and can get a lot done. the jacks weren't as heavy as I though, they package 2 in a box.
we have to take the tailgate on and off the truck, something I dread. it's a big truck (ford 350) , the tailgate is chest height and heavy. I'm always worried I'll lose my grip and it will land on my foot. we have a system to carry it and hook it on but no way around lifting one end up there.

Our summers are usually dry after june. june is usually cool and wet. july/aug usually little or no rain. this is extreme, plus the "no snow" winter. looks like we might get a little rain in the next few days, plus cooler. might change the wind pattern and we maybe will loose the smoke from BC fires. I didn't realize you got so much rain, especially in summer.
what a great video Lori. Hope things go well for her.

Lori - I'm so sorry for what you're going through with Madeline. Thank you for sharing your video. It's clear that you're enjoying your time together, and those good memories will hopefully comfort you. I did finish XTrain, and am happy with the results. Now that I'm back to doing the rest of my workouts, I have to adjust all my weights upward, so that's a good thing.

Today is Flex Train and running errands with my daughter. Have a good day everyone!

Hi everyone--

This morning I did KCM's Cardio Quick Fix, both workouts (44:39).

What a great celebratory video, Lori! A whole lot of twerking going on! It's great that you had this time with Madeline. I know some people tolerate chemo and radiation pretty well, so I hope this is how it goes for her. You look great, and your son--I can definitely see the resemblance.

Deb, yes, keep them apart or you might injure another finger separating them. A swim-lunch sounds very nice. We did get about an inch of rain, but it all fell last night, so yesterday was just cloudy.

Judy, sinus infections are no fun! I had one during one of my pregnancies, and of course, really couldn't take anything for it. Awful!

Dawn, I love Flex Train. I did that one at least 20 times. It's a perfect workout I think--a lot of metabolic weight work, so it feels like you get cardio as well. Reminds me of AB, which is a bit more cardio than weight.

Valerie, that sounds crazy with the dogs. I'm glad Max confines his chewing to bones. His only other bad habit is a crime of opportunity--licking the plates in the dishwasher when it shouldn't be open (bad humans!).

Have a great weekend everyone!

Forgot to ask... Wayward Pines? was there a discussion about this a while ago? Did anyone watch it? we watched the beginning episode yesterday and it reminded me of the one with kyle mclachan, cherry pie, in North Bend, Northern something? anyway was it worth a watch?

Valerie, Wayward Pines is very different from Twin Peaks. I have been watching it. It was on last night. I haven't read the books, but it looks like a post-apocalyptic fantasy so far.

Thank you Lynda.. yes, Twin Peaks!... we started watching Twin Peaks but I didn't last long. DH watched a little longer but quit too. we've watched 2 episodes (W.Pines) now and it now sounds more like "Lost" to me. I was so angry with myself for sticking with "Lost" as long as I did. my least favorite. DH quit "Lost" before I did. I'll watch a little more of this but not too thrilled so far. ...mostly because it makes me think of "Lost".

Good evening ladies...

Again no workout. Tomorrow I hope to get back into things. The video was fun to make and as you can see we had such a fun silly weekend which was wonderful.

Valerie...I like Wayard Pines. I read the books and was surprised it became a TV show. I agree with Lynda's description. There are a few people at work watching it that have not read the books and seem to be enjoying it.

Lynda...my son is a cloan of my Dad which just warms my heart. Like you, my Dad passed at an early age so to see my son looking more like my Dad than my brothers do is amazing. He is a spitting image of him. We had a lot of rain last night and today was really nice. The weekend is going to be beautiful!

Deb...omg!!! Good thing you were home to get that bone out. That is crazy. A swim lunch sounds so much fun. Enjoy!!!!

Dawn...I like Flex Train a lot, however, I made up a hybrid of FlexTrain and Great Glutes using the desktop workout blender which I seem to like more. Been a while since I have done this one. Congrats on finishing XTrain! Nice you need to increase your weights!

Judy...hope you are feeling better.
