Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/12

Good evening ladies...

Just noticed I typed this up last night but never hit post!

Today at lunch we did 21d Upper Extreme. This is a really great workout and boy you work it for these 30 minutes with hardly any rest. For today's SB's challenge it was an upper body workout but I subbed in Arms with Ball because it was a little shorter as my arms were actually tired from earlier.

Had my annual physical today and lab work. Hoping cholesterol and sugar levels come back good. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Valerie...hoping you are feeling better by the time you read this email. I have not heard the story about that plan crash. Amazing that girl walked out of that terrain never mind after surviving a plane crash. Just was not her time.

Deb...so I tried the cables I use to use and I only get sound. No video at all. This is what happend with the older TV we have upstairs when I tried the other day. Since I never streamed to that one I wanted to be sure and use a TV I know absolutely worked. Same thing - sound and no video. That just really stinks. I really wanted it to work for you as I know you would love Cathe Live. I do more Cathe Live now than her DVD's.

Judy...lol on the DHs getting the used and us getting the new!! He is the one that actually suggested it since I do so much on my Ipad. When I upgrade I plan to get one with at least 128g. Unbelievable to do an hour of cycling after Turbo Barre!

Josie...we are still doing the workouts. Everyone now has transitioned to just loosely following the diet. We all have increased our calories a bit but kind of still following the plan. It really taught all of us portion size which is really great. That lagoon sounds amazing!!

Lynda...lol on the all nighters. I agree completely! How is your FIL? Been meaning to ask.

Hi to Dawn!!!!

Hi everyone--

This morning I did RK with 1 lb. gloves (55:15).

Ooh, Valerie, that sounds like a nasty virus. I hope you are feeling better today after plenty of sleep and rest.

Judy, I agree with Lori--very impressive to follow TB with an hour of cycling. Your legs must be fried. Because we had so little rain in April, the tree pollen around here was horrendous. My car looked like it was coated with pollen. DH has ragweed issues too, but that's usually in late August.

Deb, are there any nursing homes on your list for therapy dogs? My mom just adored dogs and would light up at the sight of a little lap dog. She wasn't in a nursing home, but in apts for elder housing, and they didn't permit dogs. She loved being at our place when I took my sister's miniature schnauzer after my sister died, and would have her on her lap the whole time she visited.

Lori, my FIL is better--getting around more easily. His eyesight, though, is still troubling. DH is worried about their continuing plans to return to Florida in the fall. DH does not want to interfere or intervene unless he is asked. I don't know. I personally have a bad feeling about their situation, with a condo here and a house in Florida and no long-range plans if something happens. DH feels if his sister were alive, she would be the one to step up and they would listen to her. His youngest brother is out in Idaho and is a musician in a bluegrass band and his other brother is here, but they don't really confer very much about family issues because they have never been very close. He's reliable in an emergency.

Hi to Josie and Dawn!

I'm just back from a 32 mile ride, and I'm fine. just slept a lot and stayed quiet most of yesterday and whatever it was, assume virus, got up and went. Didn't feel like a cold. Going to try a hike again tomorrow. DH did one yesterday.

I haven't followed up on the plane crash yet but very impressive that this 16 yo was able to not only survive the crash, but was in good enough shape to walk out. It just feels very weird when one is very very familiar with the area where it must have happened. I have a feeling she didn't cover that much actual mileage but the whole area is quite steep and even a half mile off the hwy... walking cross country would be very difficult. Trails are often where they are because much of the area is not easily walked. I'll post a link after I go look up the updates today.

Lori, that has happened to me..apparently forgot to press "post" and when you come back, you intended post is still there.

ETA here's a link to the story. when this was first reported, there were some fantastic pictures of the area which is what I REALLY wanted to link to. It's such a great spot but this only shows a map location. http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/passenger-of-missing-plane-possibly-found/

this is a view from Easy Pass to the northwest. DH and I have been all over this area. the valley you are looking at leads away from the highway. there's a trail down to the valley floor that goes several directions. this was the pic I was looking for to begin with. not me or DH in the pic, but I have taken this shot a dozen times at least. it's a really lovely spot. this hiker is just approaching the pass.

Good evening ladies...

Today we did 21 day Lower Extreme and it was an awesome workout. Really hard for the ladies but with modifications all did well. Reminded me of Cathe's RWH contrast training...weights followed by a similar plyo move. One of the ladies said she thought she was going to cry at one point. She managed to stick with it and felt so accomplished when she was done. We are all looking forward to doing this one again. No workout for me tonight. Got home late and I am very tired.

Lynda...Glad he is getting around better but very sad about that entire situation. I can see how this could turn into a problem. So your DH had only one sister? That is so very sad.

Valerie...wow that picture is breathtaking! I can see why you love to hike with scenery like that. Glad you are feeling better. I was up early watching the news and playing with my ipad when I noticed it was just sitting there and never posted.

Deb...we have had some rain but not a ton. Think it will be here tomorrow though. You girls must have looked comical soaking wet! Bet there were lots of laughs at lunch. My DH just went a year or so for some allergy testing and did not have all those shots. What they did was put a huge patch that pretty much covered his entire upper back that had all the allergens on it in little circles. He had to keep to on for a few days and then when they took it off they could clearly see where the reactions were.

Hi to Josie, Dawn and Judy!

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did KCM Start Here and Abs & Core.

Deb-I'm not sure about how they do the allergy testing now, but it probably does involve injections. I just noticed Lori's post, that method sounds a lot better than the injections.

Valerie-I used to feel pretty bad after mowing FIL's lawn so I'm sure that being around all that grass didn't help me. I also notice it when I'm out running or walking.
I love the photo you posted! What a beautiful area.

Lori-good luck with your physical! I bet your numbers will be great! 21 day Lower Extreme sounds awesome.

Lynda-My legs were pretty sore today.
The tree pollen was really bad here too this Spring, it was all over the cars. Maybe that's what triggered my allergy symptoms this time.

Hi to Josie & Dawn!

Judy

Good morning,

Not a good sleep last night...attended the dog club Board meeting....and was so wound up I could not get to sleep...at 1:00 turned the light off, and around 2 or 3 had a puking dog wake me up....:(.

Lori, I hope your numbers come back good for cholesterol etc. You need to have someone at work take a pic of you and the Ladies after one of your workouts and post here. Would love to see the group. Thanks again for trying those cables, I guess it's just a forgone conclusion, I would need to either switch my TV's ( put the HD in my workout area and the old clunker in the den) or buy a new HD for the workout area. I may do the switch, since we have not watched the TV in the den for about 2 years now. Then if I do that, I can tape The Good Wife, and PBS shows again with my VCR! I have kind of gotten used to watching those shows on the iPad in the living room though, so maybe no taping...decisions, decisions...LOL. :)

Lynda, glad your FIL is getting better, maybe after they think about what it would take to go back to Florida, they will decide to stay....yes, I will probably get a nursing home on my list of places to go...also, I was thinking I would see If the assisted living place my uncle is in would let me bring her there too. The airport one is not sounding like I thought it was, I would be ok to go to the "pre-security" areas, like the counters and baggage claim....nothing after the security line area. Now who is sitting around in those areas? Most people are rushing to check bags, print boarding passes, or get their baggage and go home! I was disappointed in their program for this...it's not like it was described. She told me that they have only a couple people that can go to the other side of security, lots of clearance and background checks needed.

Valerie, that picture is beautiful! The reports on the plane seem pretty sketchy...they don't even really say that the "grandparents" were killed....I guess you have to assume so, but they are keeping all the details quiet for some reason...not like a normal news report, that's for sure.

Judy, I definitely like the way Lori's DH had his allergy testing! Maybe you should ask for that if you have to have it done.

Hi to Dawn,

Vet appointment this morning, then no other stuff except gardening or cleaning, my two stand by chores...

Take care,

Hi everyone--

This morning I did AT (56:00).

Beautiful weather here! The humidity dropped incredibly, and the temps are only in the 70s. Off to Jacob's Pillow this Saturday, but it sounds like the heat and humidity will be back. As long as it doesn't rain.

Yes, Lori, the sister was killed on her bike in that terrible accident. I think I will do my RWH contrast training for legs tomorrow. I have only done it a couple times and I modify the impact quite a bit. It sounds like you are working those ladies pretty hard but they are liking it.

Deb, FIL is much more worried about staying up here during the winter. Something about the dry air really affects his breathing. His blood pressure is finally under control after so many doctors have had their say. DH also wonders if his medical care would be better down in Florida, where there are so many elderly people and a lot doctors practicing geriatric medicine.

I'm interested in the Amy Schumer film Trainwreck. I will wait and see what the reviews are like, but she is funny and irreverent.

Good evening ladies,

Today we did Upper Fix. Had been a while since we did this and it was a good workout after doing the past 2 extreme ones. The funny thing about the lower extreme is no one wanted plyo but wanted a good weight leg workout. We decided on that one without reviewing. Boy they were swearing (with love) at me throughout!! Lol! But like I said they all ending up really feeling great and we now will be adding this one into our rotation. Tonight's workout was keeping with SB's challenge which was Upper Body.

Deb...so sorry about your lack of sleep. Sounds like a win win with the switching of the TV's! I will update my Live Spreadsheet and will send to you and Judy again. There are so many workouts now it helps me decide what to do. Taking a picture of the group will never happen! Some of the ladies are so uncomfortable in their workout clothes that they are changing in the closet so no one in the office sees them in their workout gear. I am sure they will RUN if I pull out my camera!!!

Judy...when do you go for testing? Hoping you have the patch my DH had. He was really breaking out bad and most likely was using something causing this. Which they discovered was the case. Not sure of this would work with the sinus allergies you have though.

Lynda...the RWH contrast workout is a great workout. Definitely more intense than the lower extreme. Again, so sad about your sister-in-law. I do not want to stay in NE at my age. Can't blame them for wanting to leave!

No results yet from my lab work. Hoping to get something tomorrow.

Have a great night all!

Good morning & Happy Friday!

Nice day yesterday, I met my friend for lunch after the vet appointment.

Lynda, I hope the weather cooperates for Jacob's Pillow today. I can understand how your in-laws would be reluctant to stay up here for the winter, with the cold and nasty weather, but at least they have close relatives in case something happened. Which RWHIT workout is the leg contrast one? Just the plain leg one? with the blasts?

Lori, I would be interested to see if your lab work numbers come out better with the weight loss...especially overall cholesterol. I have not put a dent in the 20 pounds I committed to lose to see if it would help the numbers..:(.

Hi to Josie, Judy, Dawn & Valerie,

Haircut/color today, then agility class tonight,

What does everyone have planned for the weekend?

Take care,

Good morning.. did a lovely & wonderful hike yesterday. it was cool and cloudy to start with, around 50 which helps me immensely. got warmer later on but still not bad. the flowers were wonderful, scenery fabulous. it's much prettier with some clouds. probably 7-8 miles RT, lots of elevation gain. not too far from a college so plenty of young kids up there. I felt OLD!!

The Cascades are really beautiful mountains, especially the north cascades but they are not easy traveling. the story about the plane crash settled down quickly. the girl provided enough description to get them focused on the area. the crash site was located, bodies of her decreased grandparents removed. I have tremendous respect for this girl to get thru all that and walk out. if you can call any part of this 'lucky" she was fortunate to have crashed in a part of the mountains with accessible trails, not too many miles off the only road. a lot of small planes use the hwy as a corridor to fly up and if they get off course there are big peaks everywhere. interestingly there was a similar crash in another part of the cascades the same day, but no survivors on that one. we've come across plane crash debris several times when hiking. not sure how much gets removed as a rule. Deb I think the media was vague about the description of the possible crash site to keep thrill seekers from showing up, interfering, causing problems.

Deb, that is a rough night!!. nothing like the penetrating sounds of a puking dog to wake you up! we plan on riding one day this weekend, as it's heating up both Saturday and sunday here. humidity is low so won't be too bad.

Lynda, I think about your sister often when I ride. It's one big reason we ride trails more than roads. you are so vulnerable on a bike, and drivers are so often distracted. Hope FIL improves... they don't sound like nursing home people... but assisted living has a wide range of levels of services. my aunt started out a low level but now has advanced to much more care. she had to switch care facilities midway so it's something to consider when picking a place. some other senior housing facility?

Judy I had desensitization shots long ago... I think it helped?? pretty dim memory of it. avoiding the allergen was the best course for me so finding out specifically what is the problem is useful. I've read all kinds of ideas... like getting rid of carpeting, especially in the bedroom. we get a lot of tree pollen from cedar trees. you can see clouds of it blowing in the wind! but supposedly it's not an issue for allergies.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did the Lift it Hiit it Legs--the one with the contrast training (40:35) and last night I took Max for a 3 mile hike.

I think the real issue with FIL and MIL is that they cannot move into an assisted living place unless they sell their two homes. They did look into a place down in Florida that was very nice, but they have done nothing about selling the condo and house. Florida is definitely a better place for them, but the house is on a golf course that they have to pay some kind of member's fee, which was fine when at least one of them was playing golf--FIL (MIL lost interest a few years ago, but loves the church she goes to down there). The whole situation is too complicated. The place up here has been comfortable for them, but there are water issues (they were flooded last year) and several empty condos next to them, which is a sure sign no one is in the market for them to sell. DH rushes over there all the time when there is a heavy rain to make sure the sump pump is going, and if power is off, the backup generator gets it going. Finally, yes, there is the distance, which was the problem this year when FIL had a stroke in S.C.

Enough on all that. It's just too complicated for me to ponder very long.

Valerie, after my SIL's death, DH and I kept hearing from people who had tragedies about bicycles--deaths, injuries. I honestly don't think I would ever get on a bike again.

Deb, yes, it's the leg workout with the blasts, which I try to modify or do in a kind of sloppy way. Can't click my heels together, but they jump in a little! Can't do flying angels with legs wide open and elevation, but I get a little up in the air.

Off to Jacob's Pillow tomorrow--a ballet company from San Francisco. Looks very good.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Good evening ladies,

No workout today at lunch. Tonight I did SB Lower Body. Wow my legs were shaking!

Deb...Well my lab work came in and I am not happy. Sugar levels about the same but cholesterol is up to 239! What the heck!!! LDL is at 140 and with diabetes it needs to be below 100. So with all the clean eating my cholesterol is higher. Makes absolutely no sense to me. So I now have a prescription to take which I was trying to avoid.

Valerie...sounds like a nice hike. I know what you mean when you are surrounded by young people! The story of that teen survivor was on the news today. Amazing to survive.

Lynda...not that I ride very often but when I do I also am more aware of the dangers. Enjoy Jacob's Pillow!

We plan to go out to eat tomorrow to celebrate our anniversay which is Tuesday. Other than that no plans for the weekend.

Hi to Josie, Judy and Dawn!

Lori, it really is an amazing story... luckily it was not that cold when she was up there. the mt weather can be completely different from what we have in the lowlands. but the crapped out weather was the reason for the crash to begin with. anyone (like me) who hikes the area and knows the topography... well, it's hard enough when you know what's there upfront, and choose to do it... with food, water, maps, and all the right gear.... boots, warm clothes, snacks, the whole 9 yds. Being dumped in the middle of unknown terrain with her grandparents dying in front of her must have been very very difficult. She has a lot of guts. so glad she made it out. this story resonated with me like no other. I don't know her.... but I'm so proud of her!

bummer on the labs. sometimes it doesn't help to do all the right things. DH eats a lot more than I do, but to a great degree, the same things. he eats easily 2x more than I do and he is not that much bigger physically. he eats more ice cream and goodies (like chips) and M&M's. regardless, his labs suck canal water and mine are textbook perfect. it's definitely NOT FAIR. once on meds though, it's easy to let the other measures slide.

Good morning,

We should have some decent weather this weekend, although they are predicting some more rain intermittently for both today and tomorrow. It's Italian Festival weekend here in North Buffalo, where thousands of people will be walking up and down Hertel Avenue for 2 days/nights. It's about a half mile from our house, (so glad for that)...and lasts until 6 pm tomorrow. It's amazing to see how crazy and crowded the street is, and the mess it causes...then Monday morning, it's like it never happened...the clean up crew is amazing. We have not gone in years, it's too crowded, noisy and hot!

Valerie, that hike sounds lovely. The fires are now going across the freeway....
http://news.yahoo.com/wildfire-sweeps-across-california-freeway-burns-cars-231415671.html

Lynda, yep...those Blasts are not fun...that is why I do the premix that eliminates them. :). I am looking forward to a new series. Enjoy Jacob's Pillow.

Lori, :( about the cholesterol numbers. What was the HDL? As long as your sugar levels were good, that is the most important right? I don't think 239 is bad at all! I would love to have that number and so would my DR! The HDL is more important. Is your total higher than it was the last time? I know it's so frustrating, when you are doing everything you should, good eating, losing weight, working out all the time, and the numbers go in the opposite direction. If your sugar is good, and HDL/LDL ration is where is should be, you should think about whether the meds are right for you...your decision. There has been a lot of change in thinking about cholesterol levels recently...and the old "under 200" is not as important as it used to be.

Did anyone watch "Transparent" on Amazon Prime? Apparently it got 11 Emmy nominations....I started to watch it but stopped for some reason.

John will go fishing...( why did my font changed???) , I have an agility class this morning, and will do stuff around here...

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Lori, I'm sorry about your cholesterol numbers :( I agree with Deb, the thinking on cholesterol has changed. My cholesterol was 240 total with 142 LDL, but I have high HDL and low triglycerides. I am trying to lower the numbers on my own, but I'm not going to take any medication for it. I get a cardiovascular screening every year and everything has been fine there.
