Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/09/2023

More rain coming tonight. It has been so wet. Hopefully no severe weather. I have not had to water the lawn much this summer.
My husband ordered me some Orthofeet Shoes that I have been looking at. They are a sneaker and cute. I got wide since that is what I got in the Hoka. They have a large toe box. I am looking forward to getting them.

Valerie, I was happy when I only had my primary doctor. When I was checked in for the CT I could not remember my heart doctor's name. The check in lady came up with it off of past check ins. I know his name, I just came up with a blank. I have all of my medical visits and doctors on my cell phone. I set up a group on my contacts for the repair people and lawn care etc., Ladies group etc. So far, I do not have much to keep up with for my husband. My daughter keeps telling me she thinks they will give me an inhaler because I have had a cough for many years. Nice job on Stacked Sets Upper Body and therapy work.

Carolyn nice work with Body Parts Legs express I was tempted to skip the elevated lunges. I just find them hard and if I am not balanced just right my knee will ache. I do it with the bench lower. It would be nice if the pulmonologist figured out why I cough so much. I like the upper foam rolling workout and the moves Cathe uses on it. Lower is what most show to do. I have kind of avoided the lower body because it causes me to use a lot of pressure on my wrists and it makes my shoulder ache. I did part of it on my forearms today. I wondered why she spent the entire time on her hands. She did show it on forearms further into the workout. I mostly do upper when I use CDorners rolling as well. Lower feels tedious.

Cathy, 3 in the morning!! I would really not feel like going shopping. My husband I went shopping a 1 in the morning during covid so that the store did not have many people in it. I would end up falling into bed at 3 and get up at 6:30 for virtual school with grandchildren. Talk about exhausting. We only did it every two weeks though. I just had no energy afterward.
My daughter told me one of the ladies in her office and her family went to an outdoor concert in Co. and there was an unexpected hailstorm with large hail like that. People were caught in it by surprise and not prepared. I guess their family had something that gave them a little protection, but her husband was hit and it nearly knocked him out.

Just finished STS 2 Body Parts Legs with the Bonus. I like this one better than the Lower Body workout. I did have technical difficulties part way through as our wifi is glitchy today and my stream froze so I had to switch to the disk. I realized after the fact that, in that transition, I skipped the second set of static lunges, but since I was doing the bonus I decided to not go back. Then I did most of the Step Boss lying stretch. I say most because I had switched back to streaming and it froze again, but I was most of the way done and called it good. Hopefully it straightens out as I have something to watch at noon. I also did ICE Low Impact Sweat 2 when I got up this morning.

Diane Sue I used my vest and a 35 lb dumbbell on those Close Grip Sumo Squats. 35 lb is my heaviest dumbbell, so it's the easiest way for me to go heavier. I remember seeing video of that concert in CO, that was really scary. I don't think I've ever seen much in the way of hail here that was even golf ball size. Usually about half that is as big as we get and it's rare that we get hail. Of course, now that I said that.... Great job with STS 2 Body Parts Legs.

As for sleep, I have a weird ability to have energy even after a bad night and then I crash later in the day. I often don't sleep well the night before a long drive and I've given up thinking that's a bad thing, because I'm always fine. Don't know why it is, but I'll take it.

Hi to everyone else!

Today I did STS 2 Body Parts Shoulders. My time was 46 minutes with 186 calories burned. My average heart rate was 114 and maximum heart rate was 149.

Diane Sue, nice job with Body Parts Legs and Foam Rolling. Using the Bosu for hip thrusts was a good modification. I hate elevated lunges but I do them anyway with a lower step. I use two risers most times and I go shallow. I don’t have the flexibility to do them any other way. I saw the story about the large hail during that concert in Colorado when people were running for cover. The hail in your area that killed so many birds is amazing. I’ve seen damage to cars and homes, but I never considered the danger for birds.

Cathy, nice job with Body Parts Legs + Bonus, Step Boss stretch, and ICE Low Impact Sweat 2. WiFi issues can be so frustrating.

Hello to Judy and Cathy. Have a wonderful day everyone.

we seldom get hail here although in the mountains and east its more common. it can really beat you up if you cant find shelter. also cars, windows and garden plants. a heavy hail storm can make roads incredibly slippery in a few minutes. we were in a huge multivehicle crash a long time ago because of a sudden hail storm we drove into. sudfdenly cars and trucks were ping ponging all over the place. dont remember anymore how many cars, maybe 20? a total mess. made me respect hail a lot more. I admit I never thought birds would be hurt but it likely kills many. lots of hail in CO yesterday!

we rode this morning, our usual 15 miler. 1 hr 15 min.

I've been using resistance tubing for curls. I get much better results than I ever got from dumbbells. due to the angle, I have trouble getting my hand and wrist "level". I never engage the bicep fully with a dumbbell. easier to position correctly with tubing even with heavy resistance. my barbells have very thick handles. the tubing and handle with a much smaller grip doesn't aggravate hand arthritis. going to try kickbacks that way routinely too. Ive been doing them every other day for 6-8 weeks now and I see a visible difference. cant argue with that.

I'm totally worthless the next day if I get so little sleep. I usually feel decent later on, like by late afternoon. I always have to pee at least once and often have trouble getting back to sleep. wish it weren't so.

Today I did STS 2 Body Parts Shoulders, 39 minutes, 90 calories, heart rate 94/118 followed by both STS 2 mobility workouts, 36 minutes, 55 calories. Total time 75 minutes, 145 calories, 876 steps. I lightened up and changed at least one of the options doing this workout. I have grandchildren coming tomorrow so am not sure I will do a workout. Also I am preparing food to take to one of my older grandaughters new house.

Body Parts Shoulders
warm up uses a 5# weight plate + 10 and 12 # dumbbells I used 8# as it was overhead press

Standing Overhead Press # 3 barbell 20# 8 reps
seated isometric hold w/ overhead press #1 I used the standing option 3# and 8# 5 for iso 8 reps each side
seated isometric hold w/ overhead press #2 I used the standing option 3# and 8# 5 for iso 8 reps each side
incline front raise # 1 (stability ball) 5# dbs 8 reps (tried 8's and dropped)

rear delt fly/hip hugger super set #2 5db/12 dbs 8 reps
banded single arm rear delt fly #1 tubing light around heavy db 10 reps
banded single arm rear delt fly #2 light tubing around heavy db10 reps
face pull using door anchor red light tubing 13 reps I changed and this and did the seated on the stability ball with 5# dumbbells

Cathy, nice work with STS 2 body parts legs and bonus today after having done Low Impact Seat cardio.. Good idea using the vest with the dumbbell. I have a 40 # dumbbell and my Bowflex select tech goes to 52#. The other option is using the dumbbell bars and adding more weight which I have done a lot. I could do a little more than 40, but worry about my shoulder joint picking it up.

Carolyn, nice work with STS 2 body parts shoulders. I have been using 3 risers for those elevated lunges.
The hail hit before the thunder and rain so I would guess the birds did not have time to go to a tree or something for some cover.

Valerie, nice work getting the 15 miles in today. That is great that the using the bands has made visible difference. I am finding that the dumbbells do cause more stress on my arthritic wrists and hands. I like the tubing work on the new dvds. I would have don the face pull with the tubing this time, but for some reason my door anchor would not work with the door I have been using. The door kept pulling open. I was wondering if it was because it has been so damp lately and the door was swollen a bit. Lightening up a bit seemed good for me. I am not hurting tonight after doing it. Today is the first day in a while that my back is not hurting up my whole spine.

Judy, nice job on the Peloton ride Thursday and Body Parts Triceps express today.

Today, I also did STS 2 Body Parts Shoulders with the bonus. I like having some new moves. I do love Al's expressions! He often is reflecting back how I feel. LOL

Diane Sue great job with STS 2 Body Parts Shoulders.

Judy nice job with the Peloton ride and STS 2.0 Body Parts Triceps Express.

Carolyn great job with STS 2 Body Parts Shoulders.

Valerie that's fantastic that you are getting great results from using the tubing. Nice that you were able to get your ride in. A few years back we had hail hit areas of our county, I don't remember how big it was, but it took out a lot of roofs and cars. I never thought about birds either, but a lot of birds spend the majority of time out in the open and would be vulnerable. I just googled it and hail storms have killed 10,000+ birds in one storm, and mostly waterfowl.

cathy I never thought of waterfowl! they are in the open and even marshy spots with reeds/ cattails would not provide much protection. if hail is intense enough to dent car roofs and hoods, imagine what it does to ducks. weve had hail beat up our vegetable garden especially corn.
I dont know why I never noticed before how much better tubing works for curls. I can get my hands much closer to level. I started kickbacks with tubing too. not as many issues with triceps for me but biceps have always been tough to align right. the tubing with handles works best. I like it better than bands. my heavy dumbbells have smaller handles but the 10 and 12 are neoprene ones and very hard to grip.

Today is my rest day. I find that I do much better if I have 2 rest days and remember to do the stretching/ recovery workouts. I went to the Farmer’s Market but I forgot to get arugula! I was searching for it in my bag until I realized that I never picked it up! I like to use it in my lunch salad for variety and I was planning to add some to a farro salad tomorrow.

Valerie, nice job with the 15 mile ride. I’m glad that the tubing works well for you with bicep curls. I’m enjoying the way that Cathe uses the tubing in STS 2.0. She uses it much more than in previous workouts and I can really feel the difference.

Judy, great job with the 45 minute Peloton ride and Body Parts Triceps express.

Diane Sue and Cathy, yay for Body Parts Shoulders. We all did the same workout. I don’t dread the body part workouts like I thought that I would. I think it’s the variety of exercises and the new moves that Cathe has incorporated. I also like the form pointers that she gives such as emphasis on the scapular plan with lateral raises. It seems like a lot of current research went into the planning the exercises in this series.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Valerie-I like using tubing for arm work too. I find that I am using it more than I used to.

Carolyn-I need to get better about taking more rest days. 2 rest days a week sounds perfect. I really like the body part workouts too.
