Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/19

Good morning,

I did not sleep well last night, I may have gotten 3 hours of sleep. Not sure why.

Valerie, it sounds like your suggestion to your sister to move into an assisted living place would be the best for her. What are her reasons for not wanting to do it? I sometimes feel like I have too many older Cathe DVD's and maybe should think about selling a bunch on Ebay, but something stops me from doing that. My MIL lived in a town in Ca that had a service to bring library books to people who could not get out to the library. All she had to do was tell them what type of books she like, authors she liked, and they brought new ones to her each week, took the ones she had read back. We don't have anything like that, but I always thought that was a great thing for those that could not get around. Hope you can find a new DR that you like nearby.

Josie, have fun with the Peanuts, and I bet it will be a tiring weekend, but worth it. :).

Lynda, so nice that your son will be home for the tournament this weekend! Compound Light Weights, another "5" rating! I like the "sushi" that is all cooked stuff in it. We had California rolls the other day..they were great. The restaurant's name is Wasabi. Mostly I guess I just don't like the idea of raw fish, and some of the health concerns. All the lunch entress were cooked dishes.

Judy, great ride! Good luck at the DR appointment, hope he is able to help with your allergies.

Diane Sue, your workouts amaze me. How you can do those for almost 2 hours. :). I do remember now that you mentioned those KB workout names....I had Providence and maybe Newport.

Lori, how was the step part of that Summer Live workout you did? anything dancy? I switched to always using the Low Qualify and I have not had any issues since. I hope I can get to a level of barre that is not so hard, and that I look forward to doing them. I think they are great for lower body slimming etc. I don't think I will ever get to the level you are at, with ankle weights etc,

Any fun plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Deb I tried to convince her before she got her current dog, a german shepherd. sister wants a big aggressive looking dog for the neighborhood she lives in. after her previous dog died I thought it the best chance to get her downsized into something with more services as it was likely she isn't going to drive again. many senior facilities allow small pets and so she could have a dog and a cat if she wanted. as it is now, every place she needs to go requires help from someone, and people burn out on helping. everyone steps up if it's a short term recovery from a surgery with an end in sight, but when it looks like forever, they see it as an unending inconvenience. She doesn't need assisted living, but a senior apartment with driving services would help immensely ... but she has no money and owes everyone.

she has one adult child who totally cut communication. the other is distant from the area. she and brother are not on speaking terms. she's relied on a cousin H. H is resenting doing things for her lately. So sister has boxed herself into a place where she's reliant on the good will of a dwindling # of others for basic needs and is seeing help slip away. the city she lives in does not provide a lot of support services.
Selling her house and moving would require help from a lot of people who may not be interested in doing it. she is not a good housekeeper either, and I doubt the house is worth much.
another issue has come up.... I see doing too much for her as 'enabling" ... letting her put off tough choices. I order online and let her pay the costs. I let some things slide, but think she should pay for her entertainment stuff . I let her pay the shipping charges on the books I order for her. if she can't afford it, she has to adjust her wants. I bought her a phone when her stopped working and picked up her cable bill before, but it's a bottomless pit! apparently people think I should be paying for more to "rescue" her. she owes many thousands in medical bills with more on the horizon. huge problem with no good answers. she was hoping to inherit some $ when our mother passes but she is still living and my brother and his wife have taken over and I would not be surprised if nothing is left.

Thank you all for letting me think out loud. DH has had enough of this and wants me to mostly cut her off too but I don't feel OK doing that. but.

Deb, sushi with "cooked" stuff might be ok for me ... DH will barely eat seafood ....even cooked, so sushi is probably not going to be a destination for us. if I could pick a taste off someone else's plate, I'd try .

off to do some shopping. workout later today.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Live low impact hard strikes with 1 lb. gloves (58 min.). Good but too many bear crawls and inchworms at the end. I guess you could stop after taking off the gloves, but the work she does at the end is nice and intense--with 10 lb. dumbbells.

Judy, I hope you get some relief--feeling either stuffed up or groggy is no fun.

Valerie, it sounds like you are caught between a rock and a hard place--damned if you do help her with increasing expectations and damned if you don't help her with pressure from others to rescue her. It sounds like you have done enough for someone who doesn't know how or even wants to rescue herself. I don't know where she lives, but in this area Elder Services and the VNA have all kinds of services for transportation, home cleaning, a free lunch program, and there are computers available at both the public library and the college library for people to use. Her city must be pretty poor if it doesn't have any programs to help her. It's really sad that she is estranged from her child. Look at everything Tony Soprano does for his mom--and what a godawful mom she is!

Deb, I love wasabi--it's such a different kind of hotness. Clears the sinus and makes my eyes water. Off to see a flamenco troupe tomorrow at Jacob's Pillow. It sounds like we will have lovely summery weather. I hardly see my son when he is off golfing, but maybe for dinner tomorrow night.

Great workouts, Diane Sue! I don't remember any childhood friends with allergies. Now it seems like there are all these allergies I never knew about--peanuts, latex--and those epi pens for anaphylactic shock.

Lori, I haven't done much barre lately, but I definitely did a lot a few years ago--Booty Barre, Cardio Barre, P-57, Rockin' Models (best music on this one).

Josie, have fun with your peanuts!

Good evening ladies!

This morning was low impact sweat 1 and a sb pretzel target. No workout tonight. Always hard for me to workout on a Friday after work. I like to kick off my shoes and start the weekend with a glass of wine!

Deb...the step portion is not dancy at all. Just blasts and like running man, some jump freezes. The hardest was jump up then down into a burpee and those are not crazy intense so this is completely doable. It is long, close to an hour so you can easily break into 2 workouts. So sorry about your sleepless night. I have been sleeping lke a baby since our CEO left! Looks like a new one will be starting in a few weeks. Nothing could be as bad as what we just had so I am looking forward to meeting him.

Valerie...so sad about your sister. You can think out loud in this group all you want. We are hear to listen. Sounds like a sad sad situation. One of my dearest friends was always having serious money problems and coming to us all the time. I helped her out many times but then she would spend money on silly things. Made no sense to me so I stopped as I felt I was enabling her to behave this way. It was tough but needed to be done.

Lynda...I like the live hardstrikes a lot. You all know how I feel about bear crawls so I cut them down when I have had enough. :). I am the same way, do not rememebr anyone with allergies growing up and agree everyone does now. I tried several of the barre workouts you mentioned and I did not fall in love with barre until I tried out SB's streaming site. Once I started I knew this was for me. Have a great visit with your son. Mine is visiting on Sunday and we are looking forward to it. Hard to believe GOT finale is here already!

Have a great night all!

Today I did Ripped with Hiit Circuit Upper Body, 46 minutes, 276 calories. I used my HR7 Bluetooth today with the new Polar Beats App. I like the app. It worked well till somewhere in the middle it decided to go up to 200 and then drop to 0. I tried to give it time to right itself then finally paused and switched straps. It went back to working right after that. I then did Ice Muscle Meltdown Biceps, 15 minutes, 83 calories and X Train Burn sets triceps, 14 minutes, 43 calories. I ended with Brook Benton's Butts and Guts Kettlebell workout Express Abs using a 20# kettle bell, 11 minutes with the 2 minute stretch, 60 calories. Total time was 86 minutes, calories burned 472.
Biceps Giant sets 12 reps 3 rounds of 5 exercises
standing curl 17.5#, 17.5#, 17.5
hammer curl 17.5#,17.5#,17.5#
Preacher curl in stability ball 12#, 15#,15#
Incline curl on ball 15#, 15#,15#
concentration curl on ball 15#, 17.5, 17.5#
Triceps
triceps push ups 3 sets
dumbbell lying extension 15's ,15, 15, 10 reps, 10 reps, 14 to failure
one arm kickbacks 15, 15, 15 10,10,15 to failure
burn set tubing overhead extensions

Deb, I won't get rid of any of my Cathe workouts. I just know that if I do I will up and decide I might want to do one and then not have it. I am sorry that you didn't get any sleep. That makes for a very miserable day.

Valerie, I am sorry that your sister is like that. It is easier to help someone who is trying to help themselves. Her being your sister would make it hard to set back and watch her struggle and I can understand your husband getting tired of it. I don't think anyone should rely on someone to die and leave them money. A larger dog would require more expense for food than a small dog. I am sorry that you have to worry about this.

Linda, I have not done that live workout. I think that I would like it. I like bear crawls and inchworms. I used to add inchworms as part of my warm up before my workouts. Rachel Cosgrove had those in one of her programs.

Lorie, I don't remember many allergies when I was growing up. No peanut allergies etc.. I just watched a video feed about the increase in the US of allergies, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases. They said the big companies like Monsanto and Dupont have a big push with FDA on the use of GMO foods. Soy, peanuts, and corn products that are genetically modified to be toxic to insects so that they can have more produce from their crops. They say that there is not enough to harm humans but, some say it is too much. It is in way too much of the food and babies are given formula with these GMO products. Animals are fed GMO products. In fact there is someone up there from Monsanto that started working for the FDA and some stuff was supposedly pushed through without much testing. Just thought I would share that. An interesting note, my daughter's best friend and her husband have 3 children and adopted 2. Somehow the two adopted children got the same allergies to nuts and other foods that their other children. This couple are both doctors. Anyway they have been doing some adjustments and one of them is getting better. It must be something they are feeding them. I started watching for the no gmo on the labels.

Good morning & Happy Weekend!

Still no rain here....nothing in the forecast until maybe Monday. It's tough to keep the grass green.

Valerie, no problem with airing your thoughts here....that is sad about your sister. She needs someone actually there that would put their foot down and just get her moved etc. Too hard to do from a distance. She must be on Social Security/Medicare? Lynda mentioned VNA...that may be an option for different services to help? Definitely a smaller dog and/or cat would have been better.

Lynda, have fun at Jacobs Pillow today. :).

Lori, good idea to kick off your shoes and have that glass of wine! That is what Fridays are all about. Agree, nothing like a good night's sleep.

Diane Sue, great workouts! That sounds like a good documentary. I have been reading articles on Monsanto and GMO's etc. I agree that there should be something on labelling. I also do not remember any kids with allergies growing up. Why do you supposed that is? I think all of that, and of course our resistance to antibiotics is connected to food/crops that are produced now, and the increase in processed food.

Hi to Judy & Josie,

Agility class today and going to the hospital for a bit,

Take care,

Never got to a workout yesterday. no reason except out of time.

I feel bad for my sister. she has gotten herself into this spot in spite of a lot of financial help over the years from our parents although she seems to have forgotten it now. she never learned to use a computer and seems not to want to, says she's too stupid to learn. sometimes I feel I am "enabling" her by looking up things for her, buying her things on amazon. she avoids any contact with a computer and has a terrible time even setting up a land line phone system. I've given her 3 phone/answering machines.
I see no future where she will get a computer. she has no way to get to a library and even if she could, she doesn't know how to use a computer. no cell phone either. I might get for her for safety when she is walking to call for help. I think she is on a Medicaid program and retired on SS disability. she lives in Milwaukee & has all her life. I moved from there in the early 70's so don't feel well versed on what is public services are available.
there is no one there "to put a foot down" on her... she made this last decision to get another big dog shortly after her previous dog passed. I recruited cousin H and we both tried to convince her it was in her best to make a change, but she didn't do it.... finding a new place to live would be a challenge without a computer or driving ability.

apparently I am now under fire for "letting" her pay for what I order for her on amazon. crap. damned if you do, damned if you don't. I don't nickel and dime her, let her keep a running total & send a check when she can. she orders mostly used books for a penny each, but shipping is $3.99 per book from 3rd party used book stores. I'm not trying to "squeeze" her but trying to keep her somewhat responsible for what she wants. I've looked up dozens of things for her, printed them, mailed them to her.

I agree that allergies seem more common now than 50 years ago. one theory is that children don't have exposure to dirt and bacteria like they used to. less outdoor time, super clean sanitized homes. their immune systems, without those challenges, turn on formerly innocuous things resulting in more allergies and sensitivities. Not sure I buy into that. food ingredients have changed. I'm not paranoid about it, but wheat, corn, soy, sugar. almost impossible to avoid GMO ingredients.

I was stunned to see how much epi pens cost and families with allergic kids would need to have several around so there'd be one when needed.

I

Today I did Ice Low impact sweat both workouts and blizzard blast, 54 minutes, 398 calories according the the Polar HR7 and Polar app. It is over a hundred calories more if I use the stats on Calorie burned app. I will keep with the polar though. I love the new app and the read outs on it. I will have to post a picture of my cardio workout on the app today. I also did Les Mills Combat Strength and Stretch, 19 minutes, 71 calories.

Deb, we have not had rain for awhile now, and really hot temperatures. I have to go out in the evenings and water down my plants. We keep getting critical alerts on our electricity smart hours. It shoves our thermostat up a couple of degrees from where it is set and it ends up being 84 degrees in the house from 4-6 o'clock. If I lower it I pay 48 cents a kilowatt hour. This is way more than the rate on non peak hours which is around 7 cents.

Valerie, I am in agreement about the germs and not being outside enough. Even my doctor daughter told my younger daughter to quit trying to sterilize her house like she does. With Daycare she is constantly afraid of everyone getting sick. She uses anti-bacterial sprays on everything and washes everything including putting he toys all through the dishwasher. Then she uses the essential oil diffuser with Thieves oil to help bacteria in the air. We can't survive in other countries without lots of precautions where the people that live in r conditions manage somewhat. I am going to get some local pollen and try it once this allergy season is done. "whenever that is" . I also heard that they are trying to make a law where the companies that put the non gmo on their labels will not be able to do it anymore. That way the companies that use the gmo products can hide it. I hope they do not take away the Organic labeling. I als read you can purchase nonorganic or gmo free labeled milk and dairy if you T It is a hormone used to produce more milk.

Trying again with a screen shot.
