Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/3

Hi Everyone,

Wednesday I did STS M2 D14 Legs and yesterday I did an hour on the Peloton. I called Home Depot and am on leave for the rest of May. If things look better I will be going back to work in June, but if not I will remain on leave.

Deb-I hope you are doing well this week.

Valerie-I'm glad you liked the salmon! I thought the topping was perfect. I will be making this one again soon.
Great job with the weight loss!

Diane Sue- That sounds like a bad experience at the doctor's office, considering everything that is going on now.

Lori-My schedule has been ridiculous since I've been off work. I've been staying up late, sleeping in and not starting my workouts until later in the day. Chris has to be up to start his work from home day by 8 am but some days I sleep in until 9 or 10.

Carolyn-we have several packages of chicken and meat in the freezer. We might do a short grocery run this week to see if we can pick up a few more.

Judy

I lost the ability to sleep in long ago. 7 is late for me. even if I'm up late, I cant make it up in the morning so don't stay up or I'm in for a rough day following.
Costco had a lot of beef and pork and turkey but no chicken. packages of wings was about it. I don't like those. nothing there after the skin is off. I read some survey a while ago about what parts of chicken wings people eat, maybe I brought it up here. I'm in the fussy minority who won't eat the weird cartilage on the ends. ugh. revolting. I'm fussy about icky texture in all food.
I have a Costco package of chicken breasts frozen. I'd buy another if I found one but that's 2 trips and no chicken. lots of salmon this time. farmed atlantic salmon and sockeye. sockeye is so much better. I would eat salmon way more often if I didn't have to contend with DH.

Diane sue I want to clarify. since you have ongoing allergy issues, be sure it isn't just sleeping with your mouth open causing the dry mouth. my problem went away when pollen decreased. most of the allergy meds dry out your mouth too.

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, both workouts, for 45 minutes and 335 calories burned. My average heart rate was 134 and maximum heart rate was 159.

Diane Sue, it sounds like you had a good rest day yesterday. Your appointment with the arthritis center doesn’t sound like they are well organized for the current situation. Soaking foods before preparing them definitely requires some planning. I always soak dried beans. I soak them overnight or for several hours starting as soon as I get up. I find that beans are best when I don’t try to rush the process and just allow them to cook until they are where I want them to be.

Judy, great job with STS Legs and the Peloton rides. I want to try that salmon recipe that you gave us last week. It looks delicious. I have a similar recipe that cooks the salmon under the broiler. We are well stocked with fish, turkey, chicken, and ground bison so I’m not too worried.

Valerie, your air fryer purchase seems to be a success. Now I’m reconsidering it. Which one did you get?

Hello to Deb and Lori. Have a wonderful day everyone.

the brand is Innsky. the one thing I got from reading reviews is most people want bigger than what they bought. so this one is 10.5 qts. was around $125 plus tax. its not that big. has a window and a light. I had in mind making myself salmon. it seems silly to heat up the big oven for a 5 oz piece of fish. this is toaster oven size. will do things a toaster oven does. it is a bit loud because a fan runs when its on. I never broil. have electric oven. it has "closed door broiling", which means the broiler is completely useless. it turns off when you open the oven door. with the door closed, you cant see what's broiling.... not even a little. easier to find another way to cook something.
with this small oven, I could see the salmon cooking and the coating browning nicely. the sweet potato cooked fine but not different from the regular oven and not any faster. when I make it again I might take a minute off the cooking time.

already I think a normal oven will do things just as well, or very close. I hate turning it on when warm in summer. I will move the toaster oven over to our vacation house.

I don’t cook beans often but when I do I pre soak. Much less cooking time and the texture is better. Mostly use canned beans since quantity is usually right.

Hi all,

Yesterday I did LITE Stacked Sets Lower Body, 41 minutes, 290 calories. No workout today.

Lori, maybe Gigi has grown out of destroying the plants? You can only hope right? Our backyard issue is rabbits coming in and leaving little piles of poop pellets that the dogs love to eat...ugh! We have blocked every way we think of that they may be getting in but still somehow they do. I hear you on the workouts. Can you imagine doing them at 4:30 am again? We have not gotten our checks either. I understand why you would not want to go out right now.

Valerie, sounds like the air fryer is a keeper!

Diane Sue, Wow, that appointment was very strange. I am surprised that they did not have better processes in place. I would be stressed and doing a lot of sanitizing too! John is gearing up for whenever he can reopen, making sure he is well stocked with masks, gloves and he has ordered 2 no-contact thermometers. Also will do what the vet has been doing with having people call from the parking lot when they get there, and call them up individually. Did you do the game meeting? We usually don't like self-check out either, but during these times, we prefer it. I have been just drinking decafe coffee on its own. Just in the morning though. I am not into any flavors, or creamers. I like it very strong though, so have to put in a lot more beans than they call for.

Judy, wow, sleeping in until 9 or 10...that is a record for you. Are you going to bed a lot later? I can understand why you would not want to go back to HD too soon.

Carolyn, nice job on the KCM cardio workouts!

Take care,

Today I did Coffey Fit Raw Box and Kettlebell 2 which I have done before, but did not have written out, 31 minutes, heart rate 116/163, 132 calories, 1,748 steps. I used a 15# dumbbell like Kelly and followed Kelly on the heavy bag for boxing most of the time rather than the 3# used by her cohost. Kelly does say you can upload this with a weighted best for a challenge. I need to make that note when I print it up. I then did Raw Pyramid Lower Body 39 minutes, heart rate 98/119, 175 calories. I finished with Fitbit Yoga Studio beginner flexibility (medium), they have easy, medium, hard on most workouts. This was 15 minutes, 16 calories, heart rate 80/101, 22 steps.

Valerie, I generally have a pen in my front purse pocket and in my checkbook. But, I have been using the crossbody bag that is pretty much the size of my checkbook wallet and forgot a pen. I just carry my license, keys, and credit card with me. Also cell phone. I wish I had remembered that. Yes, sjogrens. I take hydroxychloroquine which is the generic for paquenil. I had read that too. My arthritis doctor said there is another prescription, but seems to think I should try the other things because the medicine is asymptomatic?? Anyway I have had this going on for 6 years. It has just gotten worse. I drink water, use lozenges, use dry mouth rinse and toothpaste. It does not help much. I wake all night with my mouth completely devoid of saliva all the way down my throat. It feels like dry hard cracked ground looks. It makes me cough when it gets like that. I end up drinking water, sticking a lozenge and some dry mouth gel in my mouth and go back to sleep and an hour later I am awake with the same thing. It is miserable. I have to be very cautious of eating salty things as I really pay for that. It is just way worse than just the mild dry mouth thirsty. I have read about methotrexate and I do not want to have to use that stuff. My daughter mentioned Sjogrens when I had mentioned the problem to her. I had read about it and wondered as it can be a part of the rheumatoid arthritis. I am not happy about it. This is another reason I have tried to avoid allergy meds, but with all of the allergens and wind here lately and the covid virus I started taking it. I don't take the decongestant one though. When this started it was occasional. It has progressed. I understand what you were saying and yes, if I am coughing and sneezing with the allergies it makes things worse night and day. I don't even really track water often as I have water around me constantly. Another tough thing about going out as I usually have a bottle of water with me in my purse. Have to protect my teeth.
I love salmon. I need to make some tomorrow. I have several recipes that I really do like.
At least they checked temps and stuff before we went inside the waiting room. My doctor was professional. The only person that touched me was they guy trying to get the blood pressure heart rate cuff on me.

Judy, your days sound like mine. I find myself up till 12 -1 am and sleeping till 9. It partly depends on how many times I am awake. Sun peeking around the cracks of the curtains sometimes jars me awake though. I feel like my day is mostly gone by the time I get my workout in. I want to switch it around a bit. I seem to have plenty of meat right now. I did pick up a small roast when I went to Sprouts because if the family comes the 17th for birthdays I will probably add it to one of the other two I have. Depends on size and how many come. We are splitting up family days as others have plans this coming Sunday. So some this Sunday, but I am not cooking on mothers day. I will get pizza and make birthday cake for my youngest grandson and maybe his brother if he comes.

Carolyn, nice work with Cardio Quick Fix both workouts. I do soak beans and use some kombu to help the digestibility. I have not cooked dried beans in a very long time though. I know nuts has something to do with soaking is like a fermenting process that makes them more digestible or something like that. A lot of the paleo cookbooks have you soak nuts before using them in cooking and sauces. I get a bit impatient when I want to make a dish with a sauce and I forget I was supposed to soak the nuts. I have skipped that step in awesome sauce before, but the final product is not quite the same as I think there is more moisture in the nuts when they are soaked.

Valerie, that almost sounds like the Nuwave oven that I used to have. My daughter had given it to me when our oven quit as she had two. I usually package my salmon in two 5 oz pieces and cook them both at one time. I use the second the next day by reheating in the oven or skillet. Sometimes I flake it and make something like a salmon potato salad recipe (no mayo) that I got from a whole 30 cookbook. I think they used canned or packets, but baked works fine. This was a fast and easy cookbook.

Deb, glad you got in the lower body workout yesterday. I hope that you are feeling better and improving. I usually have 1 to 2 cups of coffee in the mornings. It varies though as if I have the ingredients since it is warmer, I make a smoothie, iced matcha, or something like that with macadamia milk. It keeps me from wanting half and half. That is also the reason for flavored coffee, is it helps me use something else other than half and half. I am pretty much down to 1 TBS of whatever coffee whitener I use. I like the oatmilk creamer from So Delicious, Better Half coconut and almond milk mix is good and low fat, I just do not like sweet in my coffee very much so additions need to be no sweetener, or only slight. The coffees with other things in them also have enough flavor change which alleviates bitter taste. I guess I am picky about coffee. I don't like it weak, but I don't like it to taste like they roasted the beans till they are burn and almost ashy tasting. I go for light roasts when I can. Mushroom coffee blends seem to be smoother tasting. I think maybe the Immune Wildcrafter coffee may be what is making me dizzy. Not sure yet, so I am leaving it out a couple of days. I have used astralgus though. Maybe the elderberry in it? not sure. I have elderberry cold medicine, but never used it. Yesterday I drank the calm coffee late and had the rest and recovery collagen from Ancient nutrition and I actually got excellent 91 sleep score on my sleep with the fitbit. This was a first for me. Most of the time it has been fair, but lately it has been half fair and half good. I was really tired and nodding off during a movie before I went to bed though and less sleep the day before. They used a no contact thermometer at the arthritis center. My daughter in law had said when she went she had to wait in her car till they called her in. I guess this is their next phase. I got there early and waited in the car till time for my appointment.

Deb & Diane Sue- Yes that is a record for me, lol! I have been going to bed a lot later. I haven't been getting to bed before midnight, sometimes 1 AM. I haven't kept hours like these since I was in my twenties.

I wasn't being critical about having a pen. Ive done it for years when I wen on a "no more headcolds" campaign and stopped using common surfaces. using my own pen was one of the first things I changed.

when I started the dry mouth I looked up sjogrens because I knew it was a symptom of that. I use a well known medical site, like Mayo clinic or Cleveland Clinic. there are many others but I have good luck with these. you go to the main site, and like Mayo has a category of (alphabetical) diseases and illnesses, so look it up, and there's a section on symptoms and causes, and another tab on diagnosis and treatment, and then a doctor tab where they list specialists in their clinic system. it is written in clear language and doesn't get too technical but is informative and pretty specific when possible. not suggesting "self diagnosis" , but when something isn't working right, it can point you in the right direction and help you ask the right questions, and also non medical measures you can use. easy to use. the dry mouth was very unpleasant but my problem went away when the pollen load dropped.

did stacked upper body again and the ab workout. going to go skiing tomorrow or try. might be a little warm but we will give it a try.

Valerie, thanks for the link. I am pretty sure I have looked at this before. I have researched and Web MD and Mayo are ones I usually think of as best sources. I have all of those symptoms except not sure about the swollen salivary glands. Not sure how I tell I have that one on my own. When I took the statin for a short time it seemed to make things worse and my tongue got sore and swollen in the back of my mouth along with mouth sores. I am not using it. Over several years I have went through the different symptoms with doctors and talked to my dentist. Amazing that they all attribute the different health issues to the other health issues which I guess would probably be correct. I do find if I let up on hydroxychloroquine that all symptoms seem to get worse. I still only take 1 tablet most of the time rather than the 2 that was prescribed. It does have side effects and I don't like trying to navigate during the day feeling dizzy and wiped out. So, I take 1 tablet at night. The doctor is okay with this. Once in awhile I get desperate and take 2. But, I prefer taking the least amount of meds as possible. I will have to do more research. I use moisture eye drops at night and sometimes in the daytime.

No restorative sleep last night according to Fitbit. I was up quite a lot and went to bed late after vacuuming and cleaning. For restorative sleep the heartrate drops below the resting heartrate slightly. The app says it should look like a sling overnight as it drops and returns to resting heart rate. Sometimes I get up and down all night. Last night there was none. I am finding the use of the Fitbit premium interesting. Still not sure about paying for what I get monthly.

This morning I did Muscle Max timesaver for 60 minutes and 303 calories burned. My average heart rate was 119 and maximum heart rate was 154.

Diane Sue, I am with you on soaking nuts! I like to make almond milk in the Vitamix occasionally because it is so rich and creamy. It’s really good in oatmeal and would be an excellent coffee creamer for those who use it. Unfortunately, the almonds need to soak for 12 hours and I never remember to do that.

Valerie, I have canned beans for quick things (like the enchiladas that I plan to make for dinner today), but I cook dried beans at least once a month. We get 3 or 4 meals from one pound of beans, depending on how I use them. A recently discovered favorite is a white bean gratin—sometimes referred to as pizza beans. With the tomato sauce and cheese it’s a hit even with the grandchildren.

Judy, staying up later is a nice luxury which reminds me of vacations. I can never stay up late and I can’t sleep late in the day. I’m glad that your leave of absence was extended.

Deb, does your husband have a full time practice?

Hello to Lori.

diane sue make sure you read the diagnosis and treatment tab, there were some suggestions for things to alleviate some of the symptoms. also a list of questions to think about before you go in to be seen at a rheumatologist. it sounds unpleasant condition to say the least. even my short bout with dry mouth was very unpleasant.

we went xc skiing this morning. 4.5 hours. warm and sunny out. went uphill for a couple hours, ate lunch then skied back down. a lot faster going out. snow is patchy now so we have to ski a bit, then hike a bit, then skis back on,. etc until we get to solid snow. as usual, nobody but us there. we pick very obscure places.

white bean gratin sounds good! cheese is a real weak spot for me , and I keep it shrink wrapped so I have to think about it before grabbing some.

Today I did Raw Cardio Overload 2 wearing a 8# vest this time since Kelly wears a 6 and I have been doing it with a 4# vest. I had a great workout, but my Fitbit lost my heart rate at one point and went off the charts for a bit, 38 minutes because I jotted some notes this time, heart rate 137/209, 1,901 steps. I then did Cathe Fit Split Low Impact timesaver, 27 minutes, 122 calories, heart rate 120/153, 1901 steps. I finished with Fit BIt Barre 3 Total Body Reset which was sort of yoga, barre, mobility and stretch combo, 10 minutes, heart rate 104/127, 206 steps. Total time was 75 minutes, 375 calories, 5,067 steps.

Valerie, I did read over the other stuff. About tests that can be done. That one medicine's side effects sounds like what my arthritis doctor was talking about with the flushing and sweating. I wonder if the liquid saliva that was mentioned is something prescription that they are talking about or just something like the gel I use. I have been using a moisturizing eye drop that sort of leaves a film over the eye for a little while. I am curious how my blood work will come out. It takes a few days for it to show up on my portal. I switched to an ophthalmologist this year for my eye exams. He did a lot this time, but it is split in two parts as it can cause a bit of eye strain adding in some of the stuff they do with visual field and the tests with eye drops and stuff. This is the surgeon that did my eyelids as well. He has his own eye surgery center. My daughter in law has been using him. He mentioned some cataracts starting to form or something. I seem to see okay though, so I guess it must not be bad. I have those floaters the right eye drives me nuts sometimes.
It gets difficult to know which doctor to talk to about this stuff. It seems I need to pick the one that I think would be more apt to deal with this, I can talk to my doctor at my physical which I think is this summer. She is the one that sent me to my arthritis doctor and the heart doctor. It always seems require extra appointments because they are not going to do anything extra on the routine visits.

Carolyn, I bet a Vitamix would make making nut milks so much easier. I have made almond milk and hazelnut milk and added a bit of vanilla to some of it and it was a wonderful creamer and delicious on oatmeal. It takes so many nuts and so much work without a lot of extra equipment. I always hated throwing out the pulp. Sometimes I froze some of it and tossed it into banana bread.
