Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/15

Good evening ladies,

I tried to work out yesterday but I was not able to give it my all so I stopped. I think I just need to take a break. We are having a really hard time. Today was better but we miss him so much. Bob is really depressed. Chester was his buddy and best friend if I dare say.

Today's Live class looks great and hoping it motivates me to do it Saturday.

Lynda....I thought GOT was awesome. Loved the ending. Hoping JS and Sansa kick butt. The tasting sounds delicious. Thanks for making me smile with your snow comment. :)

Valerie...hope all goes well with the builder. Sounds beautiful where you are building.

Deb...funny you should mention Windows 10. Our laptop has never prompted me to download. Was going to speak with my IT department.

Judy...hoping your appt goes well tomorrow. I have the bonus week of SB's Spring Challenge I have been meaning to send you. She starts her Summer Challenge on Monday. Thinking I may just continue with her challenges for now.

Diane Sue...I gain weight very easily, but I also lose it easily too. I am very fortunate at my age that once I make up my mind it comes off rather quickly. I have put 5lbs back on since last year that I really would feel better if it was gone. I just haven't tried.

Have a good night all.

Hi Ladies,

New Orleans was great, but it was nice to get back home and to get back on track with my workouts and eating healthy. The food was amazing!!

Lori, I'm so sorry to hear about Chester. It going to take a long time to get over it. I used to cry every time I looked our my kitchen window and not be able to see my boxer Astro. He has been gone 4 years and I still miss him. He was lucky to have had a loving family.

Judy, I had shingles 3 years ago on my right upper hip. I discovered a few pimple like spots and did not scratch them. I happened to have my physical scheduled for the next day and was able to catch it in time I had to take the anti-viral for 7 days and she also gave me an ointment to prevent the spreading. My rash did hurt a lot and I could not sleep at night. It felt like someone was pricking me with needles. Hope that you get good news tomorrow. My insurance will only pay for the vaccine at the age of 60.

Valerie, have a great trip.

Garance, I also loved GOT's episode on Sunday.

Deb, how is your leg?

Hi to Diane Sue!

Josie

Lori, it will take awhile and I understand how you feel with working out. It is hard when your heart is somewhere else. I can lose the weight quickly if I set my mind to it. I sometimes drop weight just because my activity increases and I forget to eat. Then I make up for it:) I have a low end and a high end I allow. I won't let myself go below 110. I look pathetic then and my clothes seem to hang on me. I won't go over 120 without putting some work into stopping it. Either way, my clothing size never changes. But I used to stay on the low end and rarely gain much. There was a time many years ago when I was down to 98. I look at those pictures and think how awful I looked. It wasn't because I didn't eat or anything like that. After I had my son I had a time period where I just was not putting on weight.

Josie, I am always glad to be home after vacations. There is nothing like routine and your own bed.

I'm back..we had a bunch of issues while traveling so I could hardly post. all went well with the builder. we like him. things are more relaxed in MT. we will be starting soon. there are big things like.... making sure water can be accessed, need to drill the well, and getting power to the site. if there's nio water, that's end of story, but we have neighbors with water so should be OK. wow, I'm tired. we drove a long way today.

Good morning, & Happy Friday!

I still like Friday's even though it does not really matter....No workout yesterday, just didn't feel like it for some reason.

Judy, Do you now have Windows 10 or did you go back to 8? Good luck with your check up today.

Diane Sue, you brought up the DVD drive and I forgot to test mine....will do so when I sign off from here. 7 meals of codfish in one day? Ugh....does not sound appetizing at all. It sounds like you had a great time with your grandchildren. I can see how it could be pretty tiring though.

Lynda, LOL on your plants and if they will survive when it starts snowing. I have 2 hanging baskets of geraniums. they have survived the recent cold spells. :). You never did mention what you thought of the ending of The Good Wife..

Lori, I feel so bad for you and Bob...I know this is a cliché', but time is the only thing that helps. Have you ever read aout the Rainbow Bridge? I would be surprised if your IT department says to go ahead with the download. If you Google it, all say to wait until they get more bugs out of it.

Josie, Welcome Back! Yes, it's always nice to come home. I have never been to New Orleans but have wanted to see it. Maybe some day. My leg is fine, it has been a week now with no re-occurance of that weird pain. Thanks. Countdown to the ride is?

Valerie, it sounds like you had a productive trip. Is there a stream or anything like that on your land? Our friends had some property out of the city that had no electricity and it was so expensive to run it to their cabin that they decided not to bother. It was a hunting cabin, not really a house to live in. They were pretty close to a town too.

Anyone have any fun plans for the weekend?

Meeting my friend for breakfast this morning, maybe a workout before..

Take care,

Deb, it is a gorgeous spot. windblown and sage brush. we have a couple junipers.. ..big bushes, but mostly scrub land. the view is lovely and we will have elk and deer during the winter. maybe large animals like bears or wolves passing through. there is a dead deer and an elk carcass near our driveway. this is the "north slope" outside of Yellowstone NP near Emigrant peak. there is a creek not too far away, and a large lake, but our property is dry and austere. not a lot of gardening going to happen. there are lots of people spread out around the area so it's really not isolated. we will have electricity and propane heat. this will be a nice decent sized house but not luxurious. one level, close to 2000 sq ft.

I am wrestling also with the constant commands to upgrade to windows 10. I would give it a try but DH doesn't want to. he's better at this stuff than I am. we had some kind of melt down between the iphone hotspot and the ipad and need to reset it. it refused to work at all. it was working fine and suddenly wanted a password. seemed wrong so I cancelled the request but then it stopped working altogether and I could not connect the ipad at all. too hard to mess with that kind of thing driving. you jiggle all the time and can touch things you don't intend to touch.

I'm one of those people who gains weight at the drop of a hat, exercise or not. and it won't come off. I have to be hungry most of the time to lose. in fact, I've found that if I'm NOT hungry, I'm gaining. I'm the only one in my family who is in the normal range though so it is worth the struggle. I focus on portion control these days. I need to look back and see what I missed about 7 cod meals in a day. oh my. I remember trying Atkins diet back in the 80's. I was sooo hungry... I tried to eat fish and ate piece after piece until I'd eaten 6-7 and I was hungrier than before I ate anything. that was when you would test your urine for ketones. supposedly if you expelled ketones, you were in "fat burning" mode. I could barely get there, and if I ate even a piece of lettuce I would go out of it. I was pretty sick feeling all the time and realized my metabolism does not work that way. I need to get back on a program where I track my food and activity but not WW this time. will look at my fitness pal

we met our neighbor last night ... she's a biologist, & came to get our frozen bat. a coincidence... she lives not 5 minutes away. we had a very interesting talk with her last night about bats and swifts.

Lori, Deb is right. there is no way to feel better about this, at least not yet. Our pets are so close to us, it's a huge loss that you get reminded of constantly. Lynda, I did the same thing with our dog as your DH. I started carrying him up stairs, helping him to stand. all of a sudden, I knew we had to do it . we had the vet come out and did the same, buried him under a tree in our yard. I have always felt we waited too long and made him suffer. big dogs especially, it seems like all of a sudden, everything fails... You gave
Chester a wonderful life!. a lovely video.

I just got back from my appointment. I didn't have shingles after all. The result from the skin scraping was "acute contact dermatitis or insect bite". I'm really glad it wasn't shingles, but I wish I they would have called me with the results earlier in the week so I could have stopped taking the antiviral medicine.

Lori-I was the same way when we lost Tiger. I couldn't focus on my workouts very well and I just needed to take a break. It takes a lot of time to recover from such a devastating loss. You and Bob are in my thoughts.

Josie-I'm glad you caught your shingles early and got the antiviral medicine right away.

Diane Sue-I think it's good to have a weight range with a low and high end. I try to stay in a range too and have been pretty consistent the past few years, especially since adding in Cathe's workouts and more strength training.

Valerie-My Fitness Pal is great! I think you will like it.

Deb-we stayed with Windows 10. It seems more stable now than when we first installed it. I installed a software program that makes the Windows 10 menu look like Windows 7. It's called Start10:

Hi to Lynda!

Hi everyone--

No workout for me this morning because I went off to have my blood work done.

Deb, I liked the ending of GW and also wondered if they left the door open for a spin off of some kind. So many interesting characters and fates. I think I read in EW that the writers for GW are also coming up with a new show. Uncommonly good writing for TV IMO.

Valerie, good luck on the well-drilling. Around here, people often have problems because parts of the land are so clayey and they have to drill so deep to find water. We, on the other hand, have a great well and never any problems with enough water, but our soil is very different too. Yeah, that's what happened with our dog--Kim's buddy, Zack. He just couldn't let go until it became painful just to look at the dog's face--so crumpled. Very hard losing a companion. My little schnauzer just died in her sleep, a heart attack, very sudden. After those two, we just didn't want a dog until Max.

Diane Sue, I wish I could get down to that weight, but I don't think I have been that low since my teens. Ever since menopause I have had to watch my weight and portion-size, and I do little mini-fasts on the weekend. I weigh 134 according to my last physical a week ago. I hope I was wearing 2 lbs. of clothing!!

Judy, I am surprised they didn't get back to you sooner on that diagnosis. Well, at least you know what shingles are and when you can get a vaccination. Age 60 appears to be the magical number for insurance companies

Lori, I think all of us here love our pets so much that we can feel in our hearts your grief. It must be especially hard on Bob if he is at home most of the time now and doesn't have his buddy. Does Nilla feel strange with Chester gone?

Welcome back Josie!

Today I did 3 21 Day Fix Extreme workouts. I started with 21 Day Fix Challenge, this was a bonus workout. I really liked it. It was surprising since she had you get out the mat and you start out with the inch worm. I t just kept adding on and I got more and more fatigued. Those last 3 rounds of everything were tough. This was 30 minutes and I burned 195 calories. My max hr was 146. I probably could have got it a bit higher but I was being really careful with the shoulder and the knee. I then did 21 Day Fix Extreme Upper body, 33 minutes, 129 calories. I went very light on this because my biceps and triceps are still sore from Wednesday's 4 giant sets from the ice workouts. I used 10's and 5's. I mainly wanted to see what the workout was like. I finished off with 21 Day Fix Extreme Yoga, 30 minutes, 91 calories. Total time was 93 minutes and I burned 415 calories.
I have to run errands so I will come back and finish reading and respond to posts. I have my youngest granddaughter 8 coming for a sleepover tomorrow night :D Gertie will love it. She loves to play with Gertie.

Deb, I had been reading everything that I could find on Windows 10 to help decide if I wanted to do it. One of the people that said their dvd drive quits said they tried to go back to Windows 8 and still could not get their dvd drive back. My aunt did it though and she said her dvd drive was working. These upgrades and updates can be really confusing. My Windows 7 laptop lost the audio during one of it's updates and I could get it back if I went back to before the update. After a year though I could not do that anymore. Then about a year later(recently) it just started working again. The updates kept failing. I had even tried external speakers but it wouldn't work. Anyway, it is still working since I got it back. My aunt was having problems getting her pictures and some of her files after going to Windows 10.

Valerie, my husband did Adkins once and he lost so much weight. He was back down to near the weight he was when we were married. It lasted for several months but he is picky and would only eat green beans for a vegetable. He got very tired of green beans. He won't touch them now. I believe the fat is what is supposed to help with energy and cannot imagine fish making a person feel full. I am rarely ever hungry. I eat a lot more fat than most people do with the Paleo eating. I like fish cooked different ways and with sauces and veggies but, not a steady diet of it. Also I think a person would have to take care when buying the fish so they don't get too much mercury. Your vacation home sounds really nice. I was about to suggest if you were to stay short periods of time a generator would do. Having all of the utilities would be so much nicer.

Judy, I am surprised that they didn't call you sooner. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, I waited 3 weeks for lab results and had to call the office. They had them and I have no clue how long. That is a relief that it is not have shingles. I am saving that link for if I end up with Windows 10. I use the old desk top on my Windows 8. I am much better working around Windows 7.

Lynda, menopause never made much of a difference in my weight. It started earlier for me though. I had a partial hysterectomy for cancer when in my 30's and they said I would probably experience it earlier. It just lasted for years between peri menopause of menopause. My daughter's golden lab played with and ran with my son in law and grandson and laid down in the sun never to wake up again. They were all in shock. I don't think that there I any way to lose a beloved pet. My Mudd was so sick and at 2 in the morning I had her lying with her head in my lap looking up at me. It was devastating. My vet had said that one of the women in their office had the same thing happen. It was tick born illness and by the time she met him at the office it was too late. Mudd was my buddy and always there with me through all of the years my husband was out of country. I miss her a lot.

Judy that is unfortunate you were not diagnosed correctly. I agree, someone should have let you know sooner. still, shingles is not a walk in the park, so just be glad you didn't have it. skin rashes are hard to diagnose. my rash had a stinging burning prickly sensation to it, and it hurt like crazy putting clothing over it. I get strong reactions from insect bites too, if that's what it was. It is an expensive vaccine and I would ask your doctors advice on if it's a good idea to get it sooner than 60, 62, whenever your insurance will cover.

diane sue, I apparently don't metabolize fat very well. I lost nothing on atkins and was sick besides. too bad about the green beans. I love most vegies. my blood sugar got so low on atkins I was shaking, dizzy, cold sweats, absolutely miserable. and hungry!! OMG I was so hungry! lasted about a week. People kept telling me to keep going and I'd adjust, but I didn't. You are right on the fish and mercury. I will eat fish about once a week. I weighed 110 lbs when I was in 6th grade! we are a bunch of big boned, stocky, hefty people. not a small thing about my family. menopause made it easier to gain and harder to lose but I've managed to stay about the same. I just eat less.

Valerie, we all metabolize our food differently. My daughter tried using one of my pretty strict Paleo cookbooks once. It didn't last very long. She was dizzy and sick. I told her she should have added some fruit and nuts and maybe sweet potatoes. She just gave up, She has always had a blood sugar issue. She has learned to keep a nutrition bar or something with her when she is out. Everyone I know that did Adkins had the nausea and sick feeling through the first couple of weeks including my husband.

Judy, I had a rash that no one seemed to be able to diagnose. My daughter had me meet her at her office one morning and she did a scraping to check under her microscope. She had some term she used for what she thought that I had and said it would probably disappear in 6 months to a year. It was a little over a year. It came on suddenly when I went to my Dad's funeral. I personally think it was just part of a whole two years of stress. I had knee surgery, lost my Dad and at the same time was trying to pack because our house sold fast, then we had to find a house and stayed with my daughter for several months, moved into our house and I lost my dog Mudd. It only recently went away.

Good morning,

Windows 10 Hell!!! My printer was gone yesterday when I tried to print something. I reloaded it etc but it wouldn't stay Online. I had that issue before with the old windows and had fixed it. I tried to do the same thing to fix it, and got a Windows error that there was something wrong with the PC and it had to be restarted. That was the beginning. I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with Microsoft, and they could not figure out what is wrong. everything works until I try to use the keyboard, then it gets that error and shuts down and restarts.
icon_mad.gif
I have another call with a higher level tech person scheduled for 5:00 pm today. Wish me luck.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD WINDOWS 10!!

Valerie, the land sounds nice. 2000 square feet is pretty big. I don't think our house is that big.

Judy, good that it wasn't shingles, but too bad they had to find out after you already too the mod for a week. Thanks for that link. I'll look at it once I see what happens today. They sai that they may have to reinstall the whole program, the one I have may be corrupt. Not sure how that can be. I asked if I should just try another keyboard and he said it looks like mine is ok. He was keying with his and no issue....huh? I am tempted to just swap out the keyboard and see what happens.

Lynda, I also read somewhere that there is a new show coming by the writers of GW. I liked seeing Will again.

Diane Sue, great workouts! How old is Gertie? I can't imaging eating only green beans. I would not want any more either if I was your husband. LOL. That rash you had does sound stress related. When my Mom passed away, I all of a sudden got a small bald spot on my head. The dermologist said it was "alopicia (sp?) which is caused by stress. It went away after a while and the hair grew back.

Hi to Lori & Josie,

Have a good weekend,

Deb, Gertie is two. She will be 3 in August. Still pretty much a puppy :) Windows 10 sounds like a nightmare. My younger daughter went through a stressful time and had hairloss. My other daughter gave her something to help and I think she used a special shampoo. Stress can really throw the body off.

Okay I guess that is clear!. no windows 10. did you download it or did it do it by itself? Hope you get it worked out today. what brand of printer is it? what version of windows did 10 replace? DH and I have 2 different brands a Dell, and an HP, and I have an ancient HP printer while he has a newer multifunction. I can foresee issues.

Deb, we hope to be able to use the house for 10-15 years. I am 68 now and would like to think longer, but who knows what the future holds? it's possible we could move there full time, but it's also possible we won't enjoy it enough to balance out the costs, and then we'd sell it. so we are building something that would (we hope) appeal to a wide range of buyers. 3 br, 2 bath, master, open floor plan with great room/kitchen. propane heat, air. no frills, like hot tubs. It has a gorgeous view. a smaller house might be harder to re-sell. there are a lot people living part time in the area. there will be very very little landscaping. no lawn. we are aiming for very low maintenance.

Green beans ( home grown) are one of my favorite vegies but even I get tired of them by september. I pick them when they're small and tender and need about 1 minute to cook. I like most vegies so I keep a good variety & try new preparations all the time.
for got to say, we did a 25 mile ride yesterday.

Anyone interested: I have a newer HP desktop PC which had Windows 8 installed when I bought it. I did not voluntarily install Windows 10...it just popped up while I was using the PC and started the download. I have an HP printer that is probably not part of the main issue. The error I get seems to be about the keyboard drivers. If I google this, it is a common thing, sort of like the person that had the DVD drive not work....Depending on your computer, a lot of the drives are not compatible with Wondows 10.

Deb, when I was trying to find a fix for my audio on the one computer, I found that sometimes something like the keyboard or dvd drive or my audio drive, were not made by the company that made the computer because it cost them less to use. When the updates happen that stuff will not always update and be compatible. I am sure that is going to be the issue. Just like the issues with iphones and ipads when you get some of the new updates before they have the bugs ironed out and the apps get all of their stuff upgraded too. I went back and made sure my settings were set to ask for any upgrades or updates. Hopefully that works.

Valerie, I am sure you will enjoy the home for quite some time. My Dad was still driving and pulling a travel trailer around at 85. You are active. It is good to think about resale ahead of time just in case.

Today I did Ice Low Impact Sweat pre-mix 5 both workouts with the blizzard blast and core 2, 69 minutes, 416 calories. I lowered the step to 6 inches when I did the blizzard blast and the last set of the jump on and off the step with plie jumps, I did as just straight jumps on the floor. I also did 18 minutes of 21 Day Fix Extreme Yoga again.
