Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/26

Hi again,

Today I did Ripped w/HIIT Chest, Shoulders, & Triceps, 39 minutes, 139 calories.

Carolyn, what a great gift idea for your granddaughter! A future chef in the making. So funny that you mentioned your conversation with your granddaughter regarding the science of cooking/baking. John and I were talking about the different flours that are available, and why you would use one over the other for different types of bread, as well as the different yeasts, how they react etc. Nice that you had your investment club meeting and made the decision to buy stocks now.

Valerie, great that you solved the EW printing problem. I do the same thing you do with recipes I want to print from All Recipes web site. Yes, I am sure the first time I have John help with the coloring will be an "event" for sure. I never thought about the rinsing. The little I do regularly for the top of my head only, has never been a problem with rinsing. We have a hand held sprayer for our shower head in the tub which is how I do my hair regularly, just kneel on the floor and bend over the tub. Do you think this would still work with a head full of dye? I was really surprised when I read that Boeing was opening up.

Diane Sue, wow, those were a lot of different parts of workouts etc that you did the other day ( Thursday) I don't know how you keep track of all of them, and more so, how you plan them. So cute that your 5 yo grandson is so interested in cooking. I didn't realize that in HS, the driver ed classes also taught about car maintenance....we did not have Driver Ed at my high school. I have not put gas in my car either since early March. John has though, and I made sure to remind him about the gas pumps, and the key pad for selecting etc. We are on a monthly program with a local gas/car wash company where we pay a monthly fee, get no limit on washes, and a big discount on gas. No need to go in or pay with cash etc.

Lori, glad to hear that Bob is doing better. :)

Judy, I don't blame you for now going back to HD this soon. I would agree with your DR, the risk is too high. It amazes me when I read about places like Georgia where they have given the Ok for hair and nail salons to open. Talk about close contact!

Take care,

carolyn I also meant to comment on what a nice gift that is. so many people and families don't cook anymore, such a sad loss of a useful skill. even if you don't do it every day, a useful lifelong ability to have. I'd hate to be dependent on whatever frozen stuff the store has, or drove thru/take out. its creative and fun and uses so many ingredients you would never be aware of if you don't shop and cook. for me it led to gardening too, to grow some of my own vegetables. fresh homegrown vegies are such a treat. and leads to its another skill, gardening. which leads to birds and wildlife. well its just all interconnected, isn't it? a vegie/fruit garden is 100x more fun and useful compared to an acre of grass! Again, I know not everyone will have the opportunity but exposure changes your whole outlook on the world. I used to bake a lot of bread but I don't eat much of it anymore so I don't do it that often. another activity that teaches how things work.

I saw some pics of nail salons and I can see how that might work. trial and error. hair salons look to be a bigger problem to solve. even if everyone wears a mask, you cant do it without physical closeness and touching. I see gas stations not a great risk. sanitize or use gloves after handling the pump. touching the cc screen. do it all, then sanitize and it should be good. we've been doing gloves for a long time to prevent getting the gas stink on my hands so its normal behavior for us, only now I wash gloves often.

we will see in a few weeks if this is manageable.

This morning I did a light warmup with WS3 One Mile of Motivation for 15 minutes and 115 calories burned. Average heart rate was 131 and maximum heart rate was 154. Then I did Element Yoga with Alanna Zabel, Flexibility Practice. That was 23 minutes and 41 calories burned.

That subscription for my granddaughter has been a bigger hit than I anticipated. One month it included an activity for making chicken Caesar salad and tacos. This month the focus is fizzy beverages and smoothies. They usually have a small garden and have already planted some vegetables and flowers. Kids like to eat things that they have a hand in producing.

Hello to Everyone and have a great day.

Today is a rest day of sorts. I did Fit Bit yoga workouts. Yoga Studio Connection to Core A (they have different lengths of connection to core A and B) This nw was 36 minutes, 34 calories. I just click on the log workout at the end of the workout and do not pull it direct from my watch. This one had 70 steps. It was a lot of core moves that are yoga based involving planks and lying work raising legs and pulses, crunch with leg lifts. I then did Barre 3 Undo and Renew which is a nice mobility and stretch yoga style, 11 minutes, 30 calories 89 steps.

We did a road ride this morning, 25 miles and 2 hours 7 minutes. same ride took us 2.5 hours last week. traffic was less today, got an earlier start plus we had a tail wind for half the ride. one bad driver came close to hitting DH but didn't. a big lab ran out and threatened us, me especially. the biggest danger is falling, most dogs are just chasing/barking. I yelled at the dog, then he went after DH but the owner was outside, called the dog back saying he was sorry, the dog wouldn't bite and was just dumb. Yep, agree there. still a 100 lb lab can knock a bike over pretty easily if you panic and get off balance avoiding him.. I didn't. did get off with the bike between me and the dog while I was yelling at him. we have never had trouble on this ride before. its in the tulip field area and most people keep their dogs fenced.

Today I did JS Stride and Step. This was 30 minutes and 227 calories burned. My average heart rate was 134 and maximum heart rate was 157. Jessica Smith has a Calm and Strong rotation going. While I’m not really following the rotation, I used it for inspiration this week.

Valerie, great job with your ride yesterday. I’m glad that you didn’t fall after being chased by that dog. That’s the part that I would hate! I had too many experiences like that when I was growing up.

Diane Sue, nice job with yoga and stretching yesterday.

Hello to Deb, Judy, and Lori.

carolyn I decide if I can outrun the dog, determines what's next. dog saw us coming, was out in the road ahead.... so no way. I shout at the dog.... loud, angry, stop with the bike between us. use the bike as a defense barrier. as soon as I stopped, dog charged after DH who was now a little past me. the owner was outside, called him back. didn't look like a dog who'd bite but chasing is bad too, a matter of being hit sideways and knocked down. sometimes we carry bear spray in the bottle holder. we've never had a problem on this ride. gets a lot of bike traffic. this was an outlier, owner apologized. next time we will carry bear spray. I've bear sprayed dogs before, dog will not forget it. we always carry bear spray on our mt bikes because of where we ride. could be bears, cougars, but the commonest threat is an unleashed aggressive dog. or a crazy person. we've accidentally sprayed ourselves before, it's unforgettable and not recommended.

Hi,

Today I did Walk Fit vol 1 on the treadmill, 30 minutes, 198 calories. I had to walk slower towards the end....have been without caffeine for the last 3 days. In some of the material I have from one of the after hours clinics, it says to help with UTI's you should avoid caffeine, alcohol and spicy food. Alcohol is simple for me, also spicy foods, but caffeine? Not so good.

Valerie, that had to be really scary with that lab chasing the bike! I hate when people let their dogs run free and don't see how dangerous that is. Saying he "won't bite" when he can just knock you off your bike is so stupid. My cousin rides her bicycle a lot ( she was the one that rode from NYC to Buffalo (550 miles) for a charity. She has pepper spray with her all the time.

Carolyn, Nice job on WS3, and Stride and step. I read an article about businesses in Georgia opening, slowly of course. They showed a man that either just worked or owned a hair salon, and showed him doing dye on a women's hair. They were both masked. I think hair may be safer than nails. There is a lot of close contact with manicures and pedicures.

Diane Sue, good job on the yoga workouts.

Hi to Lori & Judy,

Take care,

Deb, yes, Georgia is slowly reopening. I was shocked by the nonessential businesses that were allowed to open last Friday and today. Salons, barber shops, tattoo parlors, restaurants, bowling alleys, and movie theaters. I really hope that people here will follow the guidelines for doing this safely. If not, this could lead to a disaster. I will continue to stay home except for necessary trips out.

Today's workout was Coffey Fit weights. I had to go run errands so that was it. Hit Sprouts and the bank. I looked at Big Walmart by the bank and the parking lot was packed. No way was I going to go there as I would have spent the entire afternoon getting through there. I need some Zertec but not bad enough to go battle a crowd. Overpriced at Amazon. I have some Claritin generic so it will do till I can get some.
Raw 7 Strong
strength done in 7 rounds of 7 reps and 7 exercises Kelly uses a 33 # barbells and 20# dumbbells. She does say some moves would be better with heavier if you have them and can have them ready. She chose the weight that would work for everything and power curl press was the deciding factor. Step or bench needed
5:35 warm up
rnd 1-5
single arm row I used 20# till round 5 and switched to 25#
power curl press 15# dumbbells for me
squat 20# dumbbells (really could go heavier here)
suitcase deadlifts 20# dumbbells (could have went heavier)
bench press 20# dumbbells
dips 32# barbell rnd 1 hip thrust was done 1st then Kelly switched it for the remainder
hip thrust 32# barbell
Rnd 6-7 all done with the barbell
exercise 1 done as 7 underhand rows and 7 overhand rows exercises 3-7 all done with the barbell
ends with 2 rounds of 20# overhead pullover to sit up followed scissors

Valerie, our next door neighbor online had a man talking about these people that let their dogs hang out with them outside off leash. He had a little dog run out at him on his bike and he had to maneuver to keep from hitting it and nearly fell off the bike. He told the people they needed to put their dog on a leash. Since we have walking and bike trails through our area, it seems like they would want to keep their dogs on leash. We do have leash laws. Like the guy next door whose dog scared the Amazon guy away because it was off leash. Seriously though it usually just stays by the garage door and watches. I would never do that myself. I do work to teach Gertie to stay in the yard even if the gate is open, by occasionally leaving it open and telling her to stay. I don't want another dog that takes off like a shot like our last dog did. She took off at the first opportunity. Maybe the dog would learn a lesson with bear spray.

Carolyn, I really like the Step and Stride workout. So is the rotation on her website? They are opening up businesses like that here too. Tattoo parlors and nail salons seem like more of a hazard to me. I am not really afraid of going out all that much here though. Just not real worried about it. I don't get my nails done and won't be going to a tattoo parlor myself :) They have allowed some business to be open that I thought should not have been if they were making others close up. I personally think they are taking away our freedom to think for ourselves like we are all stupid. I don't want to see this going on and on. I know not everyone agrees.

Deb, I could understand why caffeine and alcohol would cause problems. I read that a lot about spicy food for inflammation and lack of sleep. I run into all of those things often as things to be avoided. Heart issues as well. I love spicy foods. No real problem with giving up caffeine for the most part, other that special coffee flavors and blends that I like only coming with caffeine in them. No alcohol in my house so that is not an issue either.

Some dogs are scarier than others .....pit bulls and shepherds. Several dogs together will do things a single dog would not. Some will go to edge of their property and stop. Dogs that run into the street and chase are the problem. many of those get hit by cars. We will take bear spray next time. We’ve ridden this route for years so don’t expect it to be ongoing. It didn’t scare me but made me mad.
this state is reopening some things next week. Outdoor recreation mainly. Will get details today. Looking forward to mt biking opening up. Not sure about hair and nail salons here.

Good morning,

Today I did 4DS Kickbox Legs, weight only premix, 37 minutes, 203 calories.

Carolyn, tattoo parlors? essential? and movie theaters are beyond scary to me. Are they going to seat people 6 feet away from each other in all directions? Yikes!

Diane Sue, friend of mine said the same thing, they went to a local large supermarket Saturday, and said the parking lot was full..."just like a regular Saturday". I am dumbfounded. As for the UTI and irritated bladder info, if e-coli is the bacteria found to be causing the infection, I have to ask, what does caffeine have to do with that? I have been staying away from spicy foods since my acid reflux issues, and I have not had any alcohol for at least 15 years, so no worry there. It's coffee that is my big thing.

Hi to Valerie, Lori, & Judy,

Take care,

I got up late and need to go get my workout in.

Valerie, Pit Bulls would scare me. People who have them should know to keep them on leash as they are not trustworthy. My sister in law went to help her aunt and uncle out and they have one and it bit her leg and tried to attack her when she went in their house. They just excused the dog and that was it.

Deb, here is an answer that I read on caffeine and UTI

Caffeine is considered a diuretic that is irritating the bladder and makes you feel the frequent urge to empty your bladder which decreases hydration in the body. If your body is dehydrated, your urine becomes concentrated with salts that irritate your bladder and therefore can worsen this symptom of UTI. Excessive urine production from caffeine intake may indirectly increase your risk of UTI if you resist the frequent urge to urinate as needed and thus harbor bacterial growth in your urine. During your recovery from UTI, I recommend that you drink plenty of water to flush UTI-causing bacteria through your urethral tract as well as drinking unsweetened cranberry juice, which helps prevent bacteria from binding to your bladder. I hope you find the information helpful. However, if you have more concerns about the possibility of an UTI relapse, I would suggest a consultation with a primary care physician for more information. Good luck.

No workout for me today. I needed to go grocery shopping and wanted an early start. I didn’t think that ordering online would work today because I needed so much. Going early works well because the store is not crowded and they have, or, are in the process of restocking. I also needed gasoline in my car for the first time in 7 weeks.

Deb, great job with 4 Day Split Kickbox Legs premix. That’s a good choice. The 4 Day Split series has some nice options. Many businesses have opted to wait a little longer before reopening. The Governor gave a list of 39 conditions that they must meet to ensure safety for workers and customers. Many businesses can’t meet those requirements in such a short span of time.

Diane Sue, nice work with Coffeyfit Weights. The JS Calm and Strong rotation is on her website. She gives a choice of dvd or Youtube workout.

Hello to Valerie, Judy, and Lori.

Today I did Kelly Coffey TLC (train like a contender) workout 1 boxing, 33 minutes, heart rate 121/156, 159 calories, 3,310 steps. I wore my 1 1/2 # gloves. I then did Fit Split Kickboxing and stretch skipping the warm up, 23 minutes, heart rate 129/161, 122 calories, 2,114 steps. I did Fit Split bonus abs (forgot how much time is spent on the hands) 13 minutes, heart rate 96/122, 30 calories 163 steps. I finished off with Fit Bit Down Dog yoga for upper body tension (really is total body with extra stuff for upper body) 16 minutes, 45 calories, 25 steps
Total time was 85 minutes, 356 calories, 5,612 steps.

I was thinking that today that maybe Walmart was so packed because people are stocking up after getting their stimulus checks. Maybe we will have some empty shelves again. Hope not.

Carolyn, I hate having to work around all of these problems to get shopping and things done. It makes it unpleasant. Glad mornings are working for you. Sprouts has been fine for me if I go weekdays even in the afternoon. Lots of aisles were empty of people and I was able to walk straight up to the cashier. This last time seemed funny as the lady at the register was wearing the vented mask which I know protects her. From what I understand one kind mostly protects others from the person wearing them and the vented ones protects the wearer. There is some protection for self, but it really depends on the mask and construction of it.

Went xc skiing today. it actually is a little hiking rolled in too since we could not drive to solid snow. we were stopped very low by some downed trees and a huge boulder on the road. we knew we could cut the trees and move them but the boulder must have weighed 300 lbs. we thought maybe we could swivel it off the road, but when I grabbed it, a big chunk came off. so we worked on that. DH had a small hammer and we broke up the whole thing. the rock was shale, were able to break off 10 to 20 lb chunks and toss them away, and got the whole thing removed. this was a first for us, never happened before, totally unexpected. we then sawed the trees into chunks, rolled them out of the way, drove another mile or two until a big snow patch stopped us. still patchy but we walked until it was pretty solid, and skied from there. 4 hours up and back down. its quiet, pleasant, nobody around. remote unpopulated area.

this state is opening a little but so far outdoor recreation only. no hair, nail salons or tattoo parlors! no restaurants. that's OK, we have kept the numbers down here compared to most places so as long as we have outdoor things opening up, I'm fine. I need to do some shopping tomorrow, but nothing too extensive so will head to grocery early for fruit and vegies. no crowds early as long as I avoid senior hour.

I don't understand the limitations on caffeine, alcohol or spicy food. my sister thinks tomato soup is spicy! I think 5 star Thai is spicy. I have a glass of chardonnay most nights but I don't think that's a lot.
I do drink a lot of water. only one cup of caffeinated coffee am, and decaf after that. coffee being a diuretic, I would think emptying the bladder more often would be a good thing as long as fluid intake is good. cranberry juice... mother used to drink it a lot because she had chronic UTI. unsweetened cranberry juice is some wowza-sour stuff. she thought it helped but she drank sweetened juice.
I would focus on drinking more water, maybe a lot more. I drink minimum 75 ounces a day of plain water, not counting other fluids, usually more. its on the WW tracking system now because it helps with weight loss and hunger management. sometimes when you think you're hungry you're really thirsty.

Hi Everyone,

Sunday I did a Peloton ride, yesterday I did STS M2 Back & Biceps and today I did STS M2 Legs. I added on Jessica Smith's Power Posture Walk this afternoon.

Deb-great workouts this week! I'm trying to cut back on caffeine a little but I couldn't give it up completely.
I agree with Valerie, I would drink more water. That's another thing I'm trying to do too. I'll always have my morning coffee but I'm trying not to have much more caffeine after that.
I hope Michigan goes slow in opening things back up, especially in this county.

Carolyn-It's been at least 7 weeks since I put gas in my car too. I don't blame you for staying home. I was surprised that the Georgia governor opened things back up so quickly. I will be staying home for a while after things open up here too.

Valerie-That is scary about the dog chasing your bike! I've had a few encounters with stray dogs when I was out running and biking. It's good that you didn't get injured.
I'm not sure when I will feel comfortable going to the hair salon again. They might be opening up here as soon as May 15th but I'm pretty sure I won't be going in for at least another month or more. There are still way too many new cases every day in Metro Detroit for me to feel comfortable.

Diane Sue-Nice workout today! I agree about Walmart, probably people spending their stimulus money. I haven't been out enough to see how busy the stores are but traffic noise has gone up a lot in the past couple of days so I think people are starting to go out more. I'll have to go to CVS to pick up my Allegra D this week but I can use the drive through so it won't be too bad.

Hi to Lori!

Judy

Deb, I was not encouraging you ignore directions, just wondering about the logic. I don't understand the thinking though. I like all those things! me, I would modify, but not give them up. I can understand all those things making reflux worse.

going to hit a store this afternoon. probably Costco.

Most of our covid cases were in 3 counties, I live in one, where the first cases were. I was thinking government could open things up in other counties, but nothing stops people who live in one county from traveling to another and possibly spreading the virus. its a tough call because the pressure to reopen things is immense, as is the pressure to keep it locked down. like us, we plan to go to MT this month and supposedly we would quarantine for two weeks after we got there. no way! if I thought I'd been exposed I wouldn't travel but we are careful and don't take any risks outside of occasional shopping. our outdoor activities are no where near anyone.

in other excitement, I ordered an air fryer. I've been intrigued for a long time and I've read enough, want to try one. I need to check and see when it comes. Prime has not been two days lately.

Good morning,

Today I did Ripped W/HIIT Low Impact HIIT, 30 minutes, 190 calories.

Diane Sue, thanks for all the UTI info!

Carolyn, glad that there are things in place that businesses have to do before they can open. John has been getting info from the dental associations about what he needs to do to reopen as well. Yes, the debate on masks and what each can, or can't do continues!

Valerie, wow, your clearing "workout" before you actual workout was more than you needed! I drink unsweetened cranberry juice, but it is concentrated to the point that you could not drink it alone. I mix it with water and count it as my water intake. Have been drinking 8-10 glasses of water each day. What I have read is mostly like what Diane Sue posted.....the caffeine acts as a diuretic, so it negates the water, and irritates the bladder, making the bladder more susceptible to bacteria lingering in there. I am now drinking only decafe coffee, and just a couple of cups in the morning. Want to hear what you think of the air fryer once you get it.

Judy, great job on the workouts! Are you going to continue with STS? I hope we have a lot of protective processes in place before we open thinks like restaurants. I don't know how they will ever have sporting events or large concerts like in the past. I would probably go to my hair salon if they were all wearing masks, and I would definitely wear a mask as well as gloves.

Lori, how are things going with you?

Take care,
