Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/10/22

changed our minds. rode for almost 2 hours. we have an early appt tomorrow so will be staying here tomorrow, so did the ride anyway. it was OK but they put down a lot of chunky large gravel on the roads. hard to ride on. when it gets pounded in it's OK. hard to ride on before that.. saw some spring ducks, a pair of wood ducks, ring necked ducks and buffleheads. also a dead canadian goose. hate to sound hard hearted but I hate geese. they have spread everywhere, don't migrate, poop everywhere, and squeeze out other water birds. a hunting season on them would be high on my happy list. they must taste terrible or people would be shooting them.

Today I did CDorner to the Beat Cardio, with a little of her latest step hiit workout which had too much going down into a plank so I stopped and skipped part of the warm up of the to the beat workout. I liked the music on To the Beat, but had to modify swinging my arms in circles and the boxing moves that were in part of it. Also skipped most of the just moving with different arm moves. Total time for both was 46 minutes, heart rate 127/167, 232 calories, 4,323 steps. Chris had Donna and another woman working out with her. I did my pt strength work adding moves for both arms. I ended up with 11 moves and used the strength setting on my Garmin. It recognized some of the body parts. I added some of the moves to the little pics of muscles used. I don't know why, I just felt like adding them. This was 30 minutes of work with rests or 22:52 min of work. Probably not accurate because I would start a move and remember it was still timing the rest time. I used 8# dbs and did bent over rows. I could not figure what I could use for the cable weight rows standing I have been doing. That was an estimate of weight as I know it is more than 5#. Tubing and Bands were easy to figure out. I used my shorter padded barbell for the weighted bar lying move that he had me do and then my 9# weight bar for the reverse grip pullover. This burned 65 calories hear rate 91/110, 97 steps. I finished off with CDorner 30 minute mobility stretch Rock Ballads with a chair. This also had Donna and the other woman in it. I liked it and there was not a bunch of stuff on the hands. Some standing. It worked well for me. Music was good although not really what one would expect for a stretch workout. This was 30 minutes, heart rate 76/100, 46 calories.
Total time was 1 hour 46 minutes, 343 calories, 4420 steps.
My surgeon says I do not need to come back unless there is a problem. I need to keep working on the rotator cuff. He gave me another prescription for PT and I am going to go once a week for a bit till I can get suggestions of what I can sub for some of the equipment he uses. Plus I think I can still use some of the stretches. I wish my arm was straighter, but I guess that is near impossible as the turning of my elbows and hand s jutting out at the wrists are part of the arthritis and what caused me to talk to the doctor about it to begin with. I have my mammogram and bone scan the end of the month and then will try to get the eye and arthritis appointments all set. I guess dentist as well. Too many things I have put off because of the shoulder.

Valerie, I always thought geese were fun to watch till our last house. They pooped all up and down the street where they had the bicycle lanes and walking paths. They would come into our circle and poop all around the mailboxes and the center island in the middle. It is not pretty. Once I took my grandchildren to a park with their lunches they earned from the library for reading. We tried to sit at the concrete picnic table to eat and it had poop all around it and on the table and they swarmed around us trying to get the kids food. One of them snapped at my granddaughter's hand. We did not even go to the playground as they were there too. We went home to eat. So, I really do understand your feelings. Nature can be nice to watch, but that is not nice.

Carolyn, Morning Energy has been my favorite Jane Adams yoga workout. I think I have the evening one and if I remember right it is a bit longer. I always think I will do this evenings, but when I find the time I would rather just go to bed. Nice work with the Afterburn timesaver.

Judy, you are doing well getting in workouts in along with all of those steps at work.

Cathy, I have had my dogs at various times try to catch things. They never intend to kill them, but by the time they carry them in the house they are mutilated. I always felt bad when they would catch a bird and I couldn't save it. I have had squirrels numerous times. At our last house there was a lizard pursuit in the middle of the night. I thought I had gotten rid of it. My dog woke me up with it. It got away and I moved furniture and hunted for it. Originally it was hanging on the front of the fireplace. I gave up and went back to bed. When I got up in the morning the tail was lying by the door. Don't know where the rest went. Sometimes they shed their tails to get away. It depends on the lizard. It is kind of dry here right now. They mentioned a frost last night for those that have plants out that might need covered. I do not think it got that cold though. I had a couple of sprinkles on my car when I went to my appointment.

I used to think the geese were interesting and a sort of romanticized symbol of fall, as in "flying south for the winter" in the v-shaped formation and honking. that was a long time ago! in this area, and from what I've read in most places, they have reproduced way beyond a disruptive level. they eat and poop and poop everywhere. they love parks, lawns, and golf courses but they are big and aggressive and pushy. yeah, they're cute when they are goslings but grow up into big noisy pooping machines. green greasy poop that almost can't be avoided, gets in the tread of shoes, on sidewalks, everywhere. used to be efforts to control numbers but there was public disapproval, like spraying or addling the eggs so they didn't hatch, things like that. there is duck hunting season, why not a goose hunting season? Now THAT I would support. I'd even do it myself. I assume geese taste bad or there would be hunters clamoring for the chance. hunters like to shoot anything that moves. my grandmother ate duck and goose., but mostly commercially raised. it was foul, dark, greasy. sometimes people do something to unbalance mother nature, and I think that has happened here. I'd support efforts to fix that.

my sisters telephone is not working well so I bought her a new one. she is too inept to trouble shoot the existing one and it might be malfunction or a problem with her service. got her a new land line phone. OMG she got the batteries in right( after coaching) but could not get the battery cover back on. there is a manual , there are pictures, I finally got her to line up the cover and slide it back on from the bottom. it charged overnight if she did that right. I dread buying her new things. I don't think she used the can opener I got her. I don't understand if its vision or mechanical issues. I wonder if she is playing dumb just so someone will talk to her. today will probably be showing her how to use it via telephone. I have to look up the manual and go thru the parts she needs one step at a time. hopefully the old phone works well enough so she can get the basics done. she never learned to use the answering machine even though I went thru it, called her, left messages, had her play them back etc. she doesn't do it again and keeps picking up the phone for unknown callers even though I have told her not to, a million times now and counting. I don't understand how anyone can be so inept.

Today I did JS Pyramid Power Walk for 30 minutes and 206 calories burned. My average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 171. I made a quick trip to Costco to get a new kitchen trash can. I picked up a bag of avocados while I was there and I was shocked by the price. The $5.99-6.99 bag was $9.39!

Valerie, nice job getting your 2 hour ride done yesterday. I am not a fan of geese! They are quite aggressive. I was chased by a goose when I was a child, something that terrified me at the time. They look impressive flying in formation, but when they are on the street they will not move for cars. That’s good that you could help your sister get a new phone. Am I correct in thinking that she has some type of seizure disorder? She sounds like she has that poor initiative and reasoning skills that can accompany some neurological issues.

Diane Sue, great job with CDORNER cardio, Mobility training, and your PT strength exercises. I never do the Jane Adams Evening practice at night! I’m not sure why she calls it that. I like it because of the good lower body stretching. She uses a chair for forward folds and down dog which takes stress off of the shoulders. Many of the lower body poses are also done with the chair.

Hello to Judy and Cathy. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Yesterday I shopped, got my second booster and then a bit after 5, bye bye power. My parents had lost theirs early and gotten it back and then lost it again not long after we did and again got it back. Was super windy so lots of small outages. Came back on just before 8:30. Still light enough we hadn't had to find light sources and thankfully while not warm, not real cold either. They even beat there estimated restoration time by 20 minutes. Today I did the Finished Combo workout I made. Have to say it rather spoiled me for doing regular step workouts as I have no patience with the breakdowns before the finished combo. Just not as fun. LOL

Carolyn great job with AfterBurn and Pyramid Power Walk! I find avocados tend to fluctuate a lot in price over the year. That's really pricey! The regular size are currently about $2.30 here, though I often buy the small ones since they tend to get fully used in one go.

Valerie glad you got a ride in, but large gravel and riding are not a fun combo. They don't hunt geese there. Not only can they be hunted during regular waterfowl season here, and dang there are some really cool ducks in that group, but they have an additional month tacked on just for the geese. They keep trying to make it legal to hunt cranes here, but so far haven't managed it. Your sister sounds like such a challenge for you, and it's good of you to continue to try and help her.

Diane Sue you are making such fantastic progress with your rehab! Our dogs just generally killed things, too, with one amazing exception. We had a dog that had been a stray, but looked exactly like a flat coated retriever. She brought up a baby bunny once, eyes still closed, and unhurt. She actually gave it to me, and I grabbed the leash and put it on her and darned if she didn't lead me right back to the nest. I put it back and she was confined to her kennel for a week instead of being allowed free access to the whole back yard when she was out. For the most part though they didn't survive her.

Today I did Coffey Fit Raw Step Boxing doing my own moves for the boxing, although this is a bit slower and I can reach out at some angles. I wanted to see what it is like. They suggest egg weights or light dumbbell to increase intensity. At the end instead of the arm moves I did step moves. This was 29:35 minutes, heart rate 123/142, 2,337 steps.
I then did Cathe Boss bands timesaver legs, glutes and core, adding the stretch from Boss Loops to lengthen stretching and I also did my door frame stretches for my shoulders. Total time was 38:56 minutes, 92/124 heart rate, 100 calories, 503 steps. Total time was 68 minutes, 247 calories, 2,840 steps.

Valerie, I think people have eaten goose. At least I remember old movies where they had goose instead of turkey for holidays. I know nothing about hunting really. My daughter brought over some bacon wrapped goose or duck or something her father-in-law had killed, and they thought was wonderful. Daughter hated it and one bite, and I got rid of all of it. I hope you don't have to spend long explaining things to your sister.

Carolyn, that seems like a lot of money for avocados. I have not paid a lot of attention as I usually buy two each shopping day and that is enough as I am the only one that eats them. I like them mashed on seed bread toast in the mornings.
I used to have turkeys chase me till my Dad said they have fun doing it and I learned that yelling at them and going back at them aggressively they would leave me alone. The farmer that had the land the cottage was on where we lived in England had turkeys running all over. They would get in the back yard and my mother hated it.
I have the chair Jane Adams workout. I forgot about that one. It is one that I did quite a bit when having the neck and shoulder problem before.

Cathy, those power outages are not fun. We sure rely on all of that. I always worry it will stay off too long and we have two refrigerator freezer combos full of food.
CDorner does the longer more choreographed step workouts which are usually on Saturdays. It slows me down sometimes as she breaks it down, as I have done hers long enough that I do not need too much breakdown. Sometimes people will have a hard time when she is doing it live and she shows it slow again. I just keep up the sped up version. My heart rate drops fast when she slows back down. Then it takes longer to get it back up.
That is great that your dog bought the bunny unharmed. I would have done the same keeping my dog in for awhile. I did that once when I spotted the mother cardinal coaxing her little birds out of the nest and across the yard. They used our wood pile to help fly up short bounces till they went over the fence to a pond area. I knew if either my Dane or the Lab went out those babies would not live.

Cathy that would be terrible to allow hunting cranes. they are so easy to spot, and they just stand there! make those loud calls so you can't possibly miss them. now, hunting canadian geese would not be difficult because they are usually in full attack mode themselves. there are so many!!
we don't get as many power outs as we used to but they also don't get fixed as quickly either so a mixed bag. after you've been thru a few they are inconvenient but not as big a deal as I used to think.

diane sue my grandmother liked fatty meat, especially dark. fat and grease. she got a duck ( muskovey??) or a goose from her son( my uncle) for xmas most years but they were purchased not hunted. she roasted them but they were gross. easy to see why they float so well. she flooded everything in butter, cream, gravy. she'd eat fat rather than lean, like the Jack Sprat thing! I think that's how I came to dislike it so much. she used to make my school lunches and always was adding fatty things where they didn't belong like butter on peanut butter(UGH) , cream on cereal instead of milk. I hate the feeling my mouth is coated in fat. so she was helpful in an odd way. she also liked german food and made sauerkraut and other smelly german dishes. I could smell it cooking before I got into our house, and it smelled like that for days after. I hate german food, all of it.

did the shopping today and yes, produce prices have taken a huge jump. avocados had not but berries were much higher. I bought one avocado. I over eat them when I have a bag of them, like from costco. I love them, especially avocado toast on seed bread. this one is going on a tostado.

we had one cat who was a hunter/ killer, but our last cat liked to play nicely with others, even little bunnies. first cat was a great mouser, not sure about kitty #2 since he never brought us any gifts. he's been gone a few years now and I haven't been able to get another kitty. love having them but we are traveling more and it's hard to take a kitty along in a small camper.

took yesterday off.

Last workout for Chest and Back today and after not having a problem last week, I made the incorrect assumption that I'd be able to manage this week. I did, but wow was it hard! Phew I'd even had a good nights sleep.

We never ate game animals growing up and I stopped in meat in '88, but from what I've heard goose is very greasy. Valerie your Grandma would have gotten along with my Grandpa just dandy, the man LOVED fat. He'd trim the fat off his meat and eat it straight. He lived to 96, but strokes at 92 basically took his mind and body with them. Even before that his doctors didn't know how he was functioning as he was all bent over and full of arthritis, but it was stubbornness plain and simple. He was still puttering around his farm. And totally yuck on the smell of German food. He was half German/half English and my grandma would make it for him. We got to avoid that generally, but my Dad liked it and my Mom made it for him sometimes. Stunk up the whole house. The hunters in Michigan basically want to be able to shoot anything that moves. Lower Michigan is part of the cranes migration route and we get thousands of them in the fields in the spring and fall. They would be totally sitting ducks. After migration in the spring, they disperse and you rarely see them in more than a family group.

Diane Sue great job with the Boxing and Boss Bands workouts!

We are doing a "heavy" garden day. I am taking a break now after lunch.
Cathy that is funny... my grandmother also lived to a ripe old age, almost 98. in decent health, considering, but she had bad arthritis. She used to slice fat off whatever meat it was (especially pork) and just eat it plain. she cooked the awful German stuff. my mother ate it but didn't cook much of it. they all liked sausage-y things, bratwurst, german potato salad, and smelly stinky cheese like limberger. House was closed up tight in winter, so whatever got cooked permeated everything and it still smelled a week later. cream sauce on everything. creamed corn, carrots, cabbage, spinach, onions, and on and on. started with good vegies but overcooked and then further destroyed by cream sauce. I refuse to eat things that don't pass the smell test. why would I eat something that smells like 2 week old gym socks?
I quit meat entirely when I was in my early 20's. I never made anything my family cooked except some desserts. have softened my position now and will eat poultry and fish. I still use it like a condiment, not as the main focus of a meal. I use fruit/vegies and complex carbs for that.

that's true of hunters everywhere.... if it moves, shoot it! after all, it's the only way to be sure....
that's why I don't understand lack of a hunting season for Canada geese.

This morning I did Total Body Giant Sets, the same timesaver that I did last week. My time was 39 minutes with 213 calories burned. Average heart rate was 122 and maximum heart rate was 155. The bag of avocados that I bought last week was $4.99, so yesterday’s price was a big jump. I expect it’s a short jump and the price will go down soon. Probably had to do with supply chain issues and the many trucks of produce that were stuck at the Texas/Mexico border. I saw a Mexican restaurant owner discussing the price of avocados on a news clip recently.

Cathy, power outages are no fun. I’m glad that it didn’t last too long. Nice job finishing the last Chest and Back workout and doing you Finished step Combos.

Diane Sue, great job with Coffeyfit Raw Step Boxing and Boss Bands Legs Glutes and Core timesaver. We both eat a piece of avocado almost every day. I like it on toast and my husband puts it on his turkey sandwiches.

Valerie, I can understand why you would avoid high fat foods. We never used butter as a spread on bread, and no one wanted the fatty part of the meat. As I think back on it, we actually ate a lot more vegetables than meat. My parents always had a large garden and they grew a lot of what we ate. That’s good that you took the day off yesterday.

Hello to Judy.
