Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 3/6

Lori, stay quiet until you feel better. I get over a virus much quicker if I stay warm and quiet, rest, and skip workouts. I've never been one to workout when I feel bad. it makes me feel worse! no point in that.

well, we ended up having an intense wind and rain storm yesterday. started the night before. we were lucky, power just flickered once or twice. we waited until afternoon and then did a mt bike trial run between storms. didn't want to be riding in trees when the wind was blowing hard. 1 hr 20 minutes, at the tree farm where we rode the roads. when the wind picked up again we went back to the car. several big trees down but we felt OK safety-wise about riding carefully. we wanted to road ride today but expect the trail will be closed in sections for clean up. the wind gusts got to 109 mph in the mountains with sustained of 60-80, and it went on for 24 hours. very messy.

I especially like buying cosmetics online. I used to HATE cosmetics in department stores. they always try to upsell you "stuff". plus, it stinks from all the perfume. I buy unscented. all that "fragrance" gives me a headache. when we are hiking or riding, it's always funny to pass other people and "smell" them for a long distance before and after they pass. men and women. I bought DH some shaving cream from Costco but it came only in "sea breeze" scent. he used it twice, could NOT stand the smell, and neither could I. of course it came in a 3 pack so I'll donate the unopened containers. ugh. I've gotten way more sensitive to fragrances as I've gotten older.

Deb, the LBB workout has some similar moves, and I can stop the disk and insert therapy moves. the floor work of LBB I've been using that way for a long time now. If I'm doing bridges ( therapy) with the band, I can go right into hydrants, and then the leg raises. I do better with a disk. there aren't any firewalker moves on LBB, but I can stop the disk and insert them. I don't like the warm up on LBB using the step so use the treadmill or elliptical. I hate step and jacks.

Today I did Cathe Live legs with weights and stability ball 56 minutes, 284 calories followed by Live To the Mat stopping at 30 minutes, 95 calories. Total time was 86 minutes and calories burned 379. I stopped at the side plank leg raise.
Not so many errors today :)

Judy, I order dog food, coffee, food items, makeup, and many things from Amazon. I have had prime for years. I used to order Nature tint hair color in bulk packs from Amazon till my color started getting gradually darker. I think the ultra large nylabones I by my dog through Amazon are sent through Chewy.com Kelly's Body shop was one of the first workouts I was able to use after knee surgery. I would do the cardio with the upper body a lot. I like the picture of Shadow in the Chewy Box. I remember throwing the paper grocery bags on the floor and my cat would have a ball playing in it. My rabbit Harvey loved it too. He was so funny till my dog got rough and we had to finally give him to our granddaughter. They would play together when the dog was a pup about his size. A lab and rabbit are probably not destined to be close friends forever. I have read that Aloe Vera Juice lowers cholesterol.

Deb, I had to go back and look to see what I had said since I have a 21 month, 5 year, a5 year, and 18 year grandsons LOL I guess it would be the 5 year old. I have him here again today because his school closed early today for an away game. He was not feeling well yesterday so I guess that is why he was a bit of a pill. Much better today. I enjoy Cathe's mistakes and personable personality. It gets funny sometimes. It took so many months for my knee and I lived 100 miles away from my doctor so when it finally came to surgery I had to choose a surgeon myself in the city I was living in. I should have came and stayed with family in Oklahoma City while I recovered. I just didn't want to have to drive the trip back and forth post surgery and for follow up. Then also since I was using a hospital out of town it took longer to get the okay and they wanted money up front. It was about 6 months of pain and waiting for me. I had to go pick up my own MRI films to take to the surgeon with me. I still have them because he gave them back to me. Funny thing about that surgeons office that I kind of liked. They had a big sign saying wash your hands and sinks outside the restrooms. No sinks in the restroom. People were much more likely to wash since the waiting room was right there.

Lori, I am sorry that you are so sick. My husband says the same thing if I don't work out. He knows that I am totally out of it if I do not workout. Then when I am sick or like now with the neck he tries to get me to stop.

Lynda, I am sure that you are enjoying yourself in Boston right now. My son and his family are headed to NY Tonight. There family visits different states every year. His wife has family in NY and her mother is from there but now in FL she still has the NY accent.

Josie, I am glad the your friend is improving some. It sounds like she has a lot of healing to do. Nice work on the weight loss.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I just didn't feel it.

Judy, cute pic of Shadow! that's great that Chris is doing the eating plan with you. I would be interested in what you come up with. Will you limit eggs? I know they say that eggs do not cause high cholesterol, ( that is the thing these days. before they were the big "no-no" for anyone trying to lower their cholesterol). I used to eat eggs every day, but have lost my taste for them. I maybe had had 1 or 2 in the weeks before my blood work was done, and my overall number was down 9 points from last year. That, and I added a teaspoon of flax seed meal a day. I was thinking that maybe this helped.

Lori, I hope you feel better....get a lot of rest this weekend!

Josie, great job on the weight loss! :). Good to hear your friend is on the mend. Were you able to speak with her? Aloe Vera juice? you drink it? I never heard that there was a version that you could drink...mmmm interesting.

Valerie, that storm sounds scary, I don't think I would have continued the ride. Is this a typical March for your area? Did you use the bike/rack that you had the issue with?

Diane Sue, those leg workouts are tough on their own, but to do both? Yikes. :). What kind of dog food do you get from Amazon? I used to get a lot of Nylabones from there, until Kylee cracked a tooth....the vet told me not to use them any more. :(. The dogs really miss them. Now all they can "chew" are Kong type things, and they have to be the Kong Extreme versions or they decimate them. I can see why you would have the surgery close by, all that travelling would not be good afterwards. Where were you living at the time? Funny about no sinks in the restrooms....I never saw that before, but I like your reasoning....makes people wash afterwards because they are being watched.

Lynda, have a great trip!

Agility class this morning, then we have a play to go to later this afternoon,

Hope everyone is having a good weekend,

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Last night I did KCM Plateau Buster, both workouts. It was definitely a metabolic workout, with weight moves and cardio drills in between. My heart rate was up the entire workout and I burned 330 calories in 45 minutes. The more I do KCM workouts the more I like them. I printed out her Winter 2016 rotation last night and am going to use it to come up with a 6 week rotation using Cathe, KCM & Spinervals.

Deb-I will be limiting egg yolks. I've been eating eggs every day so hopefully it will make a difference. The whites don't have any fat or cholesterol so I can have all of those I want but I will only have 1 yolk a day. The recommendation is to have <7% of your daily calories as saturated fat, or for me, no more than 15 g/day. I'm going try to keep it at 12 grams per day. My doctor did say that the cholesterol in eggs does not increase blood cholesterol, but it is the saturated fats in dairy, whole eggs & meat. I'm going to get monthly cholesterol checks at our CVS Minute Clinic. We have one close by and that will help to see if my dietary changes are helping.
It's great that yours went down!

Lori-I'm sorry you are so sick :( I hope you start to feel better soon.

Josie-I'll definitely try the Cholest-off. Also, I will be giving up red meat. An HDL of 108 is really good! Great job on the weight loss too!

Diane Sue-I've had Amazon Prime for a few years too. I order a lot of things from Amazon. You can find almost anything on Amazon.
I tried Aloe Vera juice when I worked at the health food store, maybe I will try it again.

Valerie- I agree about buying cosmetics from department stores. It's much easier to buy them online.

Hi to Lynda!

Have a great weekend!

Judy

Hi Ladies,

I decided not to run this morning and slept in a little bit. I'm going to go to the gym and take Zumba before Bodypump. My DD is coming over later so that we can hang out and catch up :).

Deb, I'm not the one who mentioned Aloe Vera juice, but my grandparents and my mom and dad used to drink it. They use to buy it from a company called Forever Living. It is also available at Trader Joe's in half gallon containers. I don't even know why they used to drink it. I have not been able to talk to my DF, but she is able to text me once in a while.

Judy, I also add chia seeds and flex seeds to my daly oatmeal. My DH is also on my eating plan. He has no choice since I'm the cook in the family ;)

Diane Sue, my grand kids are 11, 8, 6, 4 and 1. The last 3 are a handful when they come to visit.

Lori, hope that you are feeling better today.

Valerie, that storm was scary. The only time I have been caught in a storm was on my second Aids ride. They stopped the ride when I got to mile 40. It was very scary!

Garance, have a great time!

Josie

All I can say about diets is that everyone is different...unless someone has a insanely bad diet........ fast food, coke, poptarts, chips, fries for their main nutrition. after that it gets weird. I do best on a fairly low fat mostly vegetarian diet. lots of fruit, vegies, complex carbs. some boneless skinless chicken, non fat dairy. olive oil. I eat a few eggs not many. DH eats the same things although he eats a lot more sweets and desserts. our blood chemistry results are very different. very. always have been. Keep in mind that the total cholesterol number includes HDL so if your HDL is high that will push up the "total" number.
we did a road ride yesterday but cut it short at 20 miles total as it started raining at the 10 mile mark so we turned around. 1 hr 40 minutes.

I try to buy things locally but it seems that item by item, I can't find things locally and end up at Amazon.

Deb, we get storms coming in from the Pacific much of the year.... that's the direction of the jet stream. unusual in summer but it's happened. the mountains and the coast get much more severe conditions. we had gusty winds gusts to 40-50, and quite a bit of rain. it was noisy and kept us awake. we did our ride in between some periods of gusty wind, so it was pretty quiet for the time we were riding. the roads at the tree farm felt safe to ride, although we bailed and headed for the car when it wind started picking up again.

we use a regular bike rack on our Outback. I forget... Thule or Yakima. the camper can only carry bikes on the ladder. some put bikes on the front grill, but they get totally covered in dead bugs. the rack doesn't look like much, and we need to take the bikes apart to get them on it. we looked at a special rack shop, that's all that's available. we added some padding to the bumper to keep the bikes even MORE motionless. we are assuming this was a freak accident.

Judy, my kitty needs a special kidney stone diet. his food is expensive. I will look at that site and see if they carry it. Darling pic of
Shadow. good luck on your diet tweaks.

Today I did Live Step on it 50 minutes 385 calories. I then put on live Steptastic skipping the first 8 minutes since I didn't need a warm up and stopping after the second higher intensity segment and combined combos 1 and 2, forwarded to the cooldown stretch. This was 30 minutes and 224 calories. Total time was 80 minutes and calories burned 609.

Deb, here is the kind of dog food I buy, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000W5SLB8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01 I generally get the bison and venison. That is really interesting about the nylabones. I have to get the Big Chew Monsters because they are the only ones that hold up for several months. I have never had a dog have that happen. I can't do rawhide because they are consumed in a few minutes. We do have a couple of the Kong toys that have held up but even some of those have been chewed apart and I had to throw them out. I lost my other dog that was a lab mix and she was even faster at chewing up the bones than Gertie is. She was 9 years old and the vet thought she had tick born illness when I took her in. We have changed to the oral flea and tick medicine instead of the Frontline. I don't give her soup bones. I had the other dog shred one once and vomited up blood with the shavings. It really scared me. I think Gertie would really miss her Nylabone. She will leave the others and run downstairs to drag her Nylabone up to chew on when I am working out. It is either that or her claws. I trim her claws which are tough. I had the vet do it the last time I was in and she still chews on them. I was living in the northern part of the state, not far from the Kansas border in Ponca City when I had the surgery. We lived there for over 2 years and I was glad to move back to where the family is all within 20 miles. When I buy Aloe Vera Juice I mix it with orange juice or tart cherry juice. Also I try to buy a brand that is pure aloe vera juice, not a lot of additives. I think last time I ended up with Lily of the Desert which didn't have to many additives. If you do a search Aloe Vera is supposed to do quite a few good things. It is supposed to help with arthritis. I am not so sure of that myself though. It helps with cancer patients along with chemo. Lowers cholesterol.

Judy, my cholesterol numbers were off for awhile. It was unusual because I had lab reports before that saying wow! in notes on the cholesterol and how good the numbers were. I started Paleo after this and definitely eat quite a lot of eggs. I think maybe since I added back in the super greens powder and went back to more large salads with multiple greens along with changing up the oils and fats. I use mostly coconut oil which is a saturated fat and olive oil. When I went for my physical the numbers were great again. I have read so many conflicting things on cholesterol and health. I have always watched protein powders because some of the whey proteins in particular, have lots of cholesterol in them. I have read that there are other links to cholesterol besides just fats. I was recently thinking about getting Kelly's Plateau buster workouts. I think I have most of her workouts but there are a few that I do not have. I really like her stuff.

Josie, I did daycare for all of my grandchildren till the youngest. I took them to and from school too. When we moved away for a couple of years they had to make other arrangements but most of them were older and my daughter was teaching so hers were able to wait at the school with her. She has the youngest now and decided to stay home. For the most part they are pretty well behaved, at least till the 5 and 8 year old get together and then they kind of ransack my workout room and upstairs space. Last family gathering I went upstairs and my rebounder was out with the bosu on top and they had been swinging on the heavy bag and jumping. Also they decapitated my Baby Lips lip balm. So I guess you would say they are a handful at times :) When I watched them all of the time they knew what they were not allowed to do.
Enjoy your visit with your daughter today :) I am glad to hear that your friend is at least able to text you.

Valerie, the total number is something that many don't think about when it comes to cholesterol. My husband and I eat quite differently so we are a whole lot different. I would love for him to like vegetables and casseroles. He is meat and potatoes and Mcdonalds for the most part. I buy fruit to keep here for him to encourage healthier snacks being available. I peel oranges and put them in baggies. I hadn't thought about the bugs and putting the bikes on the front. I do not enjoy being away from home in storms. Maybe it is because of where I live.

We are just starting to get more places locally to buy what I want and need.
