Where's Deb this morning? I will start this off hopefully someone else isn't doing the same thing while I type. Deb, High Reps didn't take you out , did it?

Took saturday off formal exercise. very wet and rainy weekend here. Sunday I did STS disk 2. I won't have an uninterrupted run with STS this time so I'm going to try to push a little and maybe get through meso 1 before we go on a weeks vacation in april.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Hi Valerie and any later posters--

Where are you, Deb, our faithful leader?

Yesterday I did Booty Barre (63 min.) and today I did KCM's double Bootcamp circuit (55 min.).

I am having serious problems adjusting to the time-change. I feel like I am dragging myself out of bed in the morning. I am okay later, after working out, but it's going to take awhile.

Had a just-okay weekend, but going out tonight to a big dinner with all of the local chefs using local stuff on the menu. I hope the portions of all these courses are very, very small. If not, I will be bringing home a moveable feast.

We are going to Boston this coming weekend to visit our younger son and see DH's sister and her family. Should be fun. I will be on spring break.

Monday

Hi all,

sorry to be mia. Got a very nasty virus on my PC, and cannot get it looked at until Friday morning,

I am using DH's lap top and am not used to the keyboard so ignore any typos please.

My friend;s mom died Friday afternoon, so this weekend was mosting going to wake, then the funeral this morning. She had a good life, she was 97.

Valerie, I really liked High Reps, although I skipped the second grouping of leg exercises, the static lunges and paper plate ones. Did all the rest, really liked the core work in this one, like STS Total Body, a lot of different moves

Garance, I hate the time change too, and wonder why we can't give it up. Some states (like a part of Arizona I think) don't do at all.

Going to sign off now, will hopefully be back in the am.

Take care,

I solved the time change by working from 9am Saturday until 4:30am Sunday.

I woke up to 2-3 inches of snow today. That was not in the forecast.

My brother has come to stay this week to help with my mother.

Joan

Tuesday

Good morning ladies!

Back on DH's lap top. My PV will not be fixed until Friday morning, I actually have to take off time from work so that I am here and available when the tech calls. They do it remotely from Denver or wherever their headquarters are. This morning I did a 30 minute I-Tread.

Joan, get some sleep!

Signing off, this keyboard is enough to drive me crazy!

Take care,

Deb, good to hear you're Ok but too bad your computer isn't. I've been lucky, haven't had a problem like that in forever. I liked the paper plate moves in HR. I've gotten to even enjoy them! I get tired of lunges and squats so anything different seems almost fun. Laptops are so hard to type on. I've never understood why the keyboard is way up at the top where there's no palce to rest you hands. does anyone type with the arms up in the air???

yesterday another day of Yardmax. Had a small piece of a low fat brownie after lunch and it was so GOOD. other wise stuck on the diet, and was ravenous all night. my stomach growls so much it wakes me up. I don't want to weight too often though, I lose so slowly it can be depressing.

I agree, joan. get some sleep. all the articles about weight loss lately mention the importance of getting enough sleep. I know I have much less appetite control when I get over tired. just a thought.

I don't mind the time change that much but would prefer it to stay the same too. needles aggravation. I don't understand who benefits and frankly never did. . AZ doesn't change but I was thinking there are other places too, like parts of Indiana maybe.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dancin' Abs (60 min.).

Deb, glad to see you are back. I worry because I still remember Jen and Linny just suddenly disappearing, and we never found out why. 97 is a very long life, but it sounds like the final months were pretty hard on your friend. I would not mind living long if I could remain active and no senility. If I were crippled and senile, no. (Sorry if I am sounding morbid.) Max is really confused by daylight savings. His inner clock is set for me to come home at 5:15-5:20. He sits at the top of the driveway, poised to race down and around. Now he goes to the top of the driveway, but I am already parked in the carport. I wonder how long it will take him to adjust.

Gee, Valerie, your dieting sounds absolutely draconic. Could you give yourself one cheat day? I know how hard you work out, so it seems very unfair that with all that discipline you cannot melt those pounds off. I think half of Indiana does not go on/off daylight savings. Some really weird thing.

Joan, you must really love your work. I'd be crazy with a schedule like that.

Where are you Josie and Cathy?

Lynda, I HAVE to be draconian to lose. I had a roommate who would cut to half a sandwich at lunch from a whole one, and she'd lose a couple pounds in a week. I wish!!
My sister had metabolic studies when she was 10-12 yo. she was fat and couldn't lose. the plan was for her not to gain more, to hold steady and let her growth in height take care of it. well, it didn't work. she's obese. even had her stomach stapled and bypassed, and didn't help. my brother is obese. my mother is fat, and her sisters were all obese. Bad genetics. bad eating habits, poor exercise factor in too. I keep my weight stable, not constantly gaining but losing is really really hard. interestingly all the women lived to mid to late 90's. (my mother is 91) the fat didn't impact their life span.

My biggest issue is portion control. good food, just too much of it.

I second the idea of a long life being useless if you're demented or crippled. my mother's feet are so bad she can barely stand to shuffle to the bathroom. Have an aunt in assisted living. she's almost blind and deaf so just "enduring". I hope hope not to end up like that. it's an awful existence.

Hi Ladies,

Sorry for not posting last week, but I have been very busy at work. We are moving to another office and had to do some officemax. My training is going well and it will be over on April 1st. This weekend I will be riding my bike for a 65 mile ride from Orange County to Solana beach. This was my longest ride last year when I was training for the ALC ride.

Garance, my dog Astro is also confused on the time change. It is funny to see how it affects us all.

Valerie, I don't know how you do it! Your diet sounds terrible.

Joan, I agree. Go to sleep!

Deb, I also don't like to use a lap top. I'm sorry to hear about you DF's mom.

Hi Cathy!

Josie

Wednesday

Good morning,

Had to go to dinner with my boss and his boss last night, so I was very tired this morning and did not get up to do a workout. Tonight is a dog club meeting that DH wants me to go to, so it will be a very late night.

Well sad news on the puppy front, all 8 from the first litter have died, and only 3 left from the second litter, 2 boys and 1 girl. Our friend said they are hoping that the girl will be one that they keep for show, but if not, we would have first pick of her. I asked him about getting a "mellow" boy and if he had any experience with 2 wire boys living together in harmony. Waiting for his reply. We're not sure what we are going to do if this doesn't work out, maybe switch breeds, "oh my!!".

Josie, wow those workouts must have done wonders for your leg strength to be able to do that ride so soon.

Valerie, I worry about being a burden to someone, and also, what will happen to DH and me if either of us is gone, and we are ill like that. We have no kids to depend on, or anyone really. I see what my friend did for her mom and what Joan does, and hope that I go before that. I was really upset when my dad died, he just got up, made his morning pot of coffee, went on the couch to wait for it, and died before he got his first cup. It was either a stroke or heart attack. His fear was going into a nursing home, he could not even think about it. I am so glad he did not have to do that.

Garance, Max is so cute and funny. Maybe we should look into something like him or an English cocker, or maybe a Springer Spaniel. I think my first dog must have been some type of English sheppard. She looked just like Max. Back then, no one knew what any dog was, they were all from the spca and assumed to be mixed breeds.

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did P-57 vol. 2 (57 min.). The abs section on this is an absolute killer.

Deb, that's very sad about the puppies. Are wire fox terriers very prone to such a high mortality rate? Max is definitely a sweet-tempered dog and he is very well-socialized. Loves other dogs--even when they don't always love him back.

Josie, you and Valerie both amaze me with your stamina. How long does it take for you to bike 65 miles?

Big afternoon teaching The Last Emperor. After spring break, it's up to the students. Colloquia presenting their research on one of the directors. Nice for me.

Deb, I worry about the same thing. I think having children so you have someone to take care of you when you're old is a bad reason to have them, unless other reasons are far more important. but yes, I'm seeing alot of people reliant on their children. or sisters & brothers. DH ( being a physician) sees plenty of the nursing home/ assisted living side of things and we agree we don't want to end up there. sitting in a room dwindling away, physically, mentally, or both. not how I want my life to end. FIL is dwindling but has refused to go to a care facility but he is an EXTREME burden now on his wife & children. There just aren't a lot of good choices.

Too bad about the puppies! I've only owned one dog, a dobie & got him as an adult. around 1 yr old. He was a wonderful dog and I never regretted it. getting an young adult you can tell the personality and how big it will probably be, always a big question with mixed breed puppies. I was working, traveling a lot and didn't want to deal with the puppy months. a young adult is still a good candidate for obedience training etc. I followed the same approach with my cats. One adopted us after 4th of july chaos one year. when she passed, I went to a cat shelter and have gotten adult cats. one was 11 yo, the second about 1 yr. so many animals, so few homes. so it's a different approach but it's worked well for us.

Josie, terrific! Tell us more about how your training program has gone. My legs are never the issue on long rides, my issue is sit bones. even with padded shorts I get pretty darn sore.

Thursday

Good morning,

I am tired and could have slept in for about another hour. I went to the dog club meeting last night, imostly to support DH. it was nomination night and John thought that a lot of people were going to go for the treasurer's job which he has had for about 8 years. Well no one stepped up, I figured as much. It is a thankless job that people don't realize how much time he has to spend on it. Next month is the election.

Garance, apparently with the first litter of 8, the mom must have had some type of infection, plus there were too many puppies and they did not have enough room to develop. Even though 2 made it to being born, they figure they had contracted the infection as well. So sad. I am not sure why the one from the second litter didn;t make it. Only that sometimes that happens, even with healthy litters, one may be too weak.

Valerie, I've been thinking about getting insurance that will cover any type of long term care, but haven't taken even the steps to look into it. some of the nicer places can run $8000 a month and up. Can you imagine the nice hotel you could stay in for that kind of money, with room service for all meals? Its crazy

Hi to Josie, Joan & Cathy,

Take care,

Lynda, I wonder the same thing. how long would it take to go 65 miles? It depends on wind, hills, group you're with, traffic etc. 15 miles in an hour is reasonable in decent conditions. we seldom have conditions that good. the trail we ride always has walkers with dogs, kids, plus lots of roads to cross. 34 miles on a good day takes us 2 1/2 hrs even though sections we are going 20 mph. if you need to totally stop multiple times and wait for vehicle traffic if lowers your speed considerably.

Did a fast 1 hr walk yesterday checking out a new park area we thought might be good for mt biking. It wasn't that good but the walk was nice and got us outside instead of in the gym. finally some decent looking weather for the weekend. we've had endless gray skies, rain, wind, thunder, hail. blech. I want spring!

Deb, the dog club.. is it specifc to breed of dog? like is it a wire hair terrier group? or general dog lovers group?

I am soooo hungry when I wake up in the morning.... gotta be doing something.

today we're going to get a load of manure-compost to spread. we pick it up and wheelbarrow it around so it's a lot of work. shoveling and more shoveling. it's been way too wet to till the garden yet but if no more rain for 3 days maybe this weekend. we need to plant things soon, cool weather stuff that is. lettuce peas, sweet peas, broccoli

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Zumba Live (55 min.).

Deb, my DH is currently treasurer for an assn. of soccer referees, and yes, his fellow refs have no idea how time-consuming it can be to keep track of everything. He always gets in a dither when the current President wants to spend tons of money on a restaurant meal to go with a meeting. That's really sad about the puppies. Max came from a litter of 6 and they were all fine. They have two females, so there was already a new litter from the other female when we picked up Max. Did you see the picture over at the open forum of that darling Australian Shepherd puppy? Deb, the older you get, the more expensive long term care insurance premiums are.

Gosh, Valerie, if it takes 2.5 hours for 34 miles, then it probably takes 4-5 for 65. I just don't think I would want to spend that many hours doing anything, much less biking. Hiking maybe in a beautiful place with a lot of stops.....but even then probably not. There are too many things I love to do--sewing, knitting, cooking, time with friends, reading, museum shows, dance performances, movies, dancing, even shopping when I am in the mood.

We are off to Boston tomorrow afternoon. DS made reservations at a French restaurant, Aquitaine, and then on Saturday we will be having dinner with sil and bil. Looking forward to a break from my teaching--2 weeks.

Changed our mind about the manure, will do that saturday. we cut down a load of photinia ( big plants), had to chip/shred them. It's an awful job but the pile was in the way of the truck with the compost/manure. so we dealt with it first. there's manure & lots of green stuff so it's only mildly fragrant but great fertilizer.

I know some serious cycling groups go at a much quicker pace. If it's "open road" you get to speed and maintain it. where we ride, it's constant slowing, speeding up, stopping etc. we probably average 10 mph with all the obstacles. we've gone on plenty of rides that took 4-5 hours. I hope Josie chimes in. we've spent 6 hours mt biking many times, but not constant riding. Hiking we routinely spent 6+ hours, not counting the drive to the trailhead and back.

Assisted living is very expensive. and...you pay extra for every little thing over 'basic". It's safe, you don't have to "do" anything except maybe personal laundry, and you can pay to have that done. buses take you to doctor appts etc. food is prepared for you & served to you. some places even allow small pets. Much "nicer" than nursing homes, but still awful.

Good morning,

I am off today to wait for the call from the tech folks that are hopefully going to fix my computer. I have an 8 am apt. They are supposed to call me then and work on it remotely. Keep your fingers crossed, I am getting a back ache working on this lap top.

I will be meeting my friend for lunch, she has not gone out like that in almost a year. She went to a play last night, her son and his girlfriend bought tickets for them to all go together and she felt guilty because it was only 2 days since she buried her Mom. She is from the old school and feels she should be home grieving. She has been with her mom for almost a year at home 24/7. I told her to go and not worry about anything. No one is going to find fault after what she had done for her Mom.

Valerie, the dog club started out 52 years ago as an AKC Obedience club. It is for all breeds. Now we are also very involved in agility, another AKC dog sport. Did you ever do any of the charity rides Our company is very involved with the Ride for Roswell, ( cancer institute), it's a 25 mile ride where you ride for money, or sponsor the riders. Lots of our employees volunteer to do registration etc.

Garance, DH is very protective of the clubs money. When he took it over it was a mess, money missing all the time, books all messy, etc, He fixed all that and we have been able to stay in the black because he runs it with an iron hand. People are almost afraid to ask him to spend money on stuff. It's kind of amusing. I did see that Aussie puppy, very cute. We are kind of looking at Springer Spaniels, but I wouldn't say seriously yet. They need room and lots of exercise I would think, if you read up on them or look at the breeder's sites. If we had a place like yours I wouldn't hesitate to get a dog like that, but is it hard in the city, even though we do have a good sized fenced in yard.

Anyone have any plans for the weekend? I know Valerie will be moving manure around!

Take care,

Deb, it's 5 am here so you must be getting your computer fixed as we speak. hope they're able to clean it up with minimal disruption. any clue where the virus came from? I run Norton and DH mcafee. neither of our systems have had any issues.

we did yardmax for a couple hours yesterday morning, and later I did bike warmup and then disk 3 legs, all of it. every little thing. ouchie. I have some sore spots on my side hip area but it went away pretty quickly. also did Ab section of HR.

Question: when I want to go to one chapter on a disk, is there a faster way to get to it than by going to "chapters" and then click thru each exercise title one at a time? Abs are at the end and it's a pain to get to it. I thought from "Chapters" you could maybe go backward but I can't get my player (new) to do that. I'll try SNM if no one knows.

I've done Coremax umpty dozen times and like a change. High Reps Abs is still too hard for me to do without breaks but I like the exercises and tempo.

Deb, I think you're right sticking to a somewhat smaller dog in the city especially with more than one. shedding is another issue. I'm no fan of purse dogs that seem so popular but more medium size.

Yipes. after a year hope your friend takes a well deserved vacation, doing something/everything she likes. I can't imagine anyone being critical of her not sitting home grieving. after that long, her the grieving has been worked through. she's probably massively relieved it's over even if she doesn't say it in those words.

Hi,

all clean! It took the guy about an hour and a half, he did all the updates to my virus software, updated adobe flash player etc, althougn he didn't have to. He was in Dublin Ireland. I love that, so cool that he can be working on my pc from half way around the world.

Valerie, I don't know of any faster way to get to a particular chapter on a DVD except the way you said. I hate that the new workouts don't include the warm up in the pre-mixes. I have to go to the chapter list, do the warm up, then go back to the pre-mixes to select the one I want. At least this is how it is in Total Body, I haven't tried the pre-mixes on High Reps yet.

Off to go to lunch.....it's beautiful here today, about 52 degrees and sunny, just like spring!!

Great. all clean! I hate itwhen my computer has a problem but haven't had a virus in a loooong time.

It's spring like here too. partly sunny, will be in 50's later. all weekend looks decent. saturday is the newly designated manure day. It's not really "manure". a local firm generates compost from chicken & cow manure, and a lot of green materials. It can be applied to the soil surface directly and mixed in or used as mulch. It's excellent overall fertilizer, non chemical which we prefer although it requires shoveling. we used it as mulch last year and liked it so much we will get more this year. .

Lynda, have a fun time in Boston... I don't know how you eat all these restaurant meals and don't gain weight. You're lucky, enjoy!

I go to yoga and then get my hair trimmed, then groceries. but it's sunny & not raining. whoopee!
