Pentagenarians & Beyond: w/b 3/1

Good morning,

No workout today, but I did get 11, 528 steps in yesterday. Still trying to figure out why I have no audio on any of the LIVE workouts. For those that posted and are interested in the protein ball snacks, this one looked interesting: Hope the link works!

Carolyn, thanks for the idea for a substitute for agave. I agre that people are overreacting to the Corona virus issue. There were 2 families here in our county that were suspected to have the virus, but thankfully all tested negative. In Westchester county, ( outside of NYC) a man tested positive, then his wife, son, daughter and neighbor that drove him to the hospital all tested positive. I wonder how many people in NYS die each day from the flu? They never publicize that.

Diane Sue, nice job on the RAW workout. We also use Webroot for anti-virus stuff. I like the idea of maple syrup also as a substitute for agave. I remember I had a can of agave in my cupboard, then read somewhere or other that it had such a high sugar content, people were not using it as much. I didn't know there was a "quick" version of steel cut oats. Did you use the regular version for yours? I have a ton of that already, so would try that first.

Hi to Judy,

Take care,

Today I did Step, Jump, and Pump, the step plus weights premix. That was 48 minutes and 265 calories burned. My average heart rate was 123 and maximum heart rate was 167.

Diane Sue, do you use steel cut oats in your protein balls? I use old fashioned oats for that purpose. I have steel cut oats (had some today) but I can’t imagine using them raw.

Deb, nice job with your steps yesterday. I hope you get your Cathe Live audio to work soon. I use mostly honey or maple syrup, but I also have some date syrup that is good in oatmeal or plain yogurt.

Hello to Valerie and Judy.

This morning I did Jessica Smith Youtube Fat burning abs: full length hiit cardio & core, 31 minutes, 132 calories, heart rate 122/156, 1,672 steps. I really felt this should have been higher on both steps and calories. I did not do any of the modification options. It had impact in it and squat thrusts. I was disappointed. It was way better than the cardio ab workout that I own of hers. I then did I Max 4 combos only premix, 27 minutes, hert rate 122/157, 128 calories, 2,585 steps finishing with Step Boss Chair stretch, 16 minutes, heart rate 91/107, 16 calories, 16 steps. Total time 74 minutes, 276 calories, 4,273 steps. I still feel like these numbers are really low. Oh, well!

Deb, thanks for posting that. I will check it out. I have read negative about agave too. I don't remember what it was though. I thought it was supposed to be better for the glycemic index or something though. I use honey. Maybe sometime I will try maple syrup with vanilla whey. Yesterday I used the quck steel cut oats. I have been using regular steel cut oats though. I don't think it seemed much different with the quick cooking. Kind of gives it a crunchy feel, but I like it.

Carolyn, yest I use steel cut oats in my protein balls. I tried some of my sprouted oats once and like the steel cut better. I have never tried date syrup.

Pretty sure its Bobs red mill that makes the quick cooking steel cut oats. they are fine but I got sick of oats after a few years and only have them occasionally.
I have maple syrup, agave and honey. honey crystallizes easily and is a process to re-dissolve. neither of the others do. I use maple syrup in salad dressing, but it ends up being a few molecules by them time it gets mixed into the olive oil and vinegar, mustard, and shallot. I like all of them and would definitely over eat them if I went by taste alone. protein balls also sound like something I should not have around. I would eat them up and feel guilty later. I think agave is nutritionally more like HFCS because it has a lot of fructose. for me, I think of all as equivalent, things I need to watch volume because they all taste so good and I could easily over eat. .

we did a mt bike this morning, 1 hr 40 min. our usual ride. nice morning here.

This morning I did Cardio Slam, the premix with low impact modifications. That was 49 minutes and 327 calories burned. My average heart rate was 126 and maximum heart rate was 145.

Hello to everyone and have a wonderful day.

Hi all,

Today I did Cardio Coach, 35 minutes, 248 calories.

Carolyn, nice job on Step, Jump & Pump and Cardio Slam. I also like maple syrup, ever since doing the NG workshop. It is a lot easier to use than honey.

Diane Sue, I think my FitBit is not recording my HR correctly, so, I would say my calorie burns are not right either. The one today had my average HR at 126 ( which is really low for me) and the maximum at 178!! No way I was ever at 178. I was looking at the watch here and there, and it was always way lower than I felt like I was working. I kept trying to move it around on my arm, as sometimes it showed no HR at all. I see that Trader Joe's is supposed to have some KETO approved protein balls for sale. I'm sure they will be out of them all the time.

Valerie, never thought to use maple syrup in a salad dressing to sweeten it a bit. Thanks for the tip! Yes, honey is always crystalized, and a friend that makes honey said you should never put it in the microwave to dissolve. She said put the container in warm water. That would take forever!

Hi to Judy,

Have a great evening!

We are traveling to Montana today about 2/3 of the way. So no workout today. Planned to go but we’re not sure about which day. So here we are! I
Deb I do the hot water melt. You have to pull out honey Container and reheat the water a dozen times. If there is one tiny crystal left it will recrystallize the honey quickly. Agave and maple syrup don’t do that but maple syrup has the special flavor That agave lacks. It’s a vinaigrette dressing and not really sweet but very pleasant, my favorite dressing.

Good morning,

no workout today, woke up with a UTI... :( I am waiting for the DR to return my message. On a positive note, I did get 11, 360 steps yesterday.

Valerie, safe travels! I have honey in the house, but avoid using it due to what you described. What is your recipe for the vinaigrette dressing that uses maple syrup?

Hi to Carolyn, Diane Sue & Judy,

Take care,

Today’s workout was High Reps which was 66 minutes and 339 calories burned. My average heart rate was 120 and maximum heart rate was 158.

Deb, I’m so sorry that you are going through that again. I never heat honey in the microwave. Like Valerie, I loosen it up in warm water.

Valerie, I’m glad that you had a safe trip. I imagine that it feels good to be away from large groups of people.

Hello to Judy and Diane Sue.

No workouts as yesterday was my eyelid surgery. I did Kelly's Raw Stretch yesterday before my surgery. It depends on how much swelling and bruising I have tomorrow whether I start getting in some activity. I have been lying around with an icepack over my eyes every few minutes as they said 10 on 10 off or watch television and ice during advertisements. I am listening to podcasts while I ice. No icing while sleeping though. My right eye is doing pretty good but the left is really swollen. They said that is not unusual and everybody swells and bruises at different levels.
Wondering what others think about which Jessica Smith workout series is better? The Transformation one or Walk Strong 3?

Carolyn, yes I use steel cut oats. They do get a bit softer as they sit in the refrigerator. I think they give a bit more texture to the protein balls. Great job on the workouts

Deb, I am sorry you are dealing with the uti again. I wish the doctor could help you find a solution so you don't have to keep going through this.
I keep hoping that Fitbit will come up with an update that makes their trackers more accurate. It seems when they are doing well, they start trying to develop new features or a new tracker and they mess everything up. Mine stopped losing the heart rate for a few days after I set it back to default, but the last workout I did with it, it lost the heart rate once that I know of. I usually buy small jars of honey and use them before they crystalize. When I have had honey that crystalized, I find that putting it in dressings it seems to dissolve and it does in baked goods. I sometimes have set it in warm water to soften it a bit. I used maple syrup in a tahini salad dressing I made recently. It was good.

Valerie, glad you made it. Enjoy your day.

Diane Sue, I’m glad that your eye surgery went well. I don’t have a Jessica’s Transformation program. In addition to the three Walk Strong 2.0 workouts that you have, I have the 30 Day Plan and Walk Strong 3. The 30 Day Plan includes a 15 minute, 30 minute, and a 40 minute walk as well as some other workouts. Walk Strong 3 has the most variety, in my opinion. The workouts are more challenging than Jessica’s other programs, but again there is a variety.

the dressing is an Ellie Krieger recipe.
1.5 TB cider vinegar
1 tsp Dijon mustard
2 tsp maple syrup
1 TB chopped shallot
1/4 tsp salt
3 TB olive oil
1/8 tsp pepper

I double it and process with a stick blender. once mixed, it won't separate. it will last a week at least in the frig. don't skip the mustard. it's the emulsifying agent that keeps it from separating. Her salad has lettuce, a pear, blue cheese, pecans. I don't like blue cheese or pecans. I use dressing as a basic vinaigrette on all salads.

Deb I hope you get tough on your doctor. you don't want to keep getting UTIs this often. you don't want to revisit c. diff from using antibiotics so much.

we snowshoed two places today in the park. 3 hours total. pooped! beautiful sunny warm day. lots of critters to look at.
Diane sue.... did they suggest sleeping semi upright in a chair if possible? it usually helps curtail swelling if you don't lie flat. Do you have a recliner chair? DH always does this when he has dental work and he has very little swelling. its hard to sleep upright but a recliner will help get to a middle ground. Hope you have great results!! both DH and I will likely need this eventually too.

Good morning,

I went to the Urologist office, instead of an "urgent care" facility. I was lucky that the NP had an opening. Of course the sample I gave showed no level of bacteria, but she sent it for a culture anyway. This is what happened the last time. They cannot explain why I would have all the symptoms of a UTI, but the culture came back negative. It looks like the same thing will be happening this time. Even those "little OTC red pills" are not working today. I may be calling their after hour coverage for a script.

Diane Sue, I hope the swelling is down and things are better for you today. I just noticed the FitBit problems recently. It may have been going on for a while. I keep looking at the HR being recorded, because of the blood pressure incident I had before....first time I had done that regularly, and that is how I picked up on the strange numbers. That and the "zero" HR number.

Valerie, that snow shoeing sounds wonderful! thanks for the recipe. I have everything except the mustard, and I can see how that would be an important ingredient. I plan on picking some up. I have tried to be very careful with anti-biotics, when they are needed. Taking them with a negative culture is so against everything I have been doing, but it is the only way the symptoms go away. Not sure what it can be if not a UTI. Then it's back in 6 weeks or so. This has been so CRAZY!!

Carolyn, great job on High Reps.

Hi to Judy,

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

I felt like doing PHA workouts this week so Wednesday I did S & S PHA and yesterday I did a timesaver premix from PHA 2. I'm working this weekend, but shorter shifts so it won't be too bad.
My Fitbit stopped working last week and I've decided to upgrade my Apple Watch and stop using a Fitbit. The new Apple Watch works with the Peloton too so that will be good, and I found a sleep app for Apple Watch that seems to work as well as the Fitbit one.

Deb-I didn't get a chance to try out any Live workouts but I will this week. Are you still having the sound issue?
That's odd that your culture came back negative but you have all the symptoms of a UTI. I hope you feel better soon.

Diane Sue-I have Walk Strong Total Transformation System. It's a good one, but not as challenging as WS 2 or WS 3. I agree with Carolyn, Walk Strong 3 is Jessica's most challenging series and it has a lot of variety. I think you would be happy with it. I hope you heal quickly from the surgery.

Carolyn-Great job with High Reps! That's another one I need to do again.

Valerie-It's good that you got away from the crowds. It's getting crazy here even though there haven't been any cases of Coronavirus yet. They are monitoring a few people in Lansing and it sounds like they expect an outbreak there.

Have a good weekend,

Judy

I really need some stretching and movement. I have been lying propped up the last two days waiting for swelling to go down. It is better this morning. Left eye is still the puffy one, but right even has some of the redness and bruising fading a bit. I am going to try Raw stretch and tone and maybe Jane Adams energy yoga. I will see how I look after sitting up for awhile. My shoulder work me up hurting last night. I don't know why, I must have laid on it wrong. They have me sleeping with two pillows and I am still using my neck roll. I shoved my small roll and go pillow under the side of my torso and this seemed to alleviate it some.

Carolyn, thanks. I went to Jessica's site and read up on the workouts and read reviews and descriptions on Amazon. I think the Transformation one might be a little short on some of the things I would want. Walk Strong 3 does look like it has a lot of variety, but I feel it doesn't have as much for the walking workouts. I know I have the Have Fun ones and the Build Strength and Balance. So I might be wanting one with the Walks and then the Walk Strong 3. Is the strength work good in Walk Strong 3?

Valerie, we have a recliner, but it pushes my head forward and makes my neck hurt. As they instructed me to sleep with two pillows, I have been propping pillows up on the couch against the arm and sitting at an angle. I usually do this anyway when I am watching a movie or something. It works better for my neck and shoulder issues. I always put my small pillow behind my low back to help with the posture and curve there. I just cannot sit upright on the couch without finding my posture going wrong and neck starting to hurt.
I made an Asian dressing, sort of a vinaigrette, that they actually said that you could store it un refrigerated for awhile. I only made half of the recipe. I used tamari in it and halved the amount of the tamari and used coconut aminos because of the sodium. Maple syrup and Dijon mustard in it as well. I am trying to watch what I use for dressings because it sure racks up the fat calories.

Deb, I am so sorry you are not getting the help you need. How frustrating that it does not show up on the test.
When I opened my Fitbit app this morning it did an update. We will see if that helps anything. I noticed Fitbit had some new clock faces that I have not seen. That is the Fitbit clock faces.

Judy, I am sure you will enjoy the Apple watch. I think that I would want one if it worked with my fitness equipment. Good workouts this week. Thanks on the Jessica Smith workouts. I got the impression that the Transformation on would be lighter.

Today I did WS3 Cardio Hit which has boxing inspired moves. That was 31 minutes and 208 calories burned. My average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 155. Then I did her Gentle Yoga, hips and knees practice. That was 22 minutes and 49 calories. I am making an unexpected trip tomorrow, so probably won’t get in a lot of workouts next week. My daughter has some medical issues going on and I want to be with her for support.

Diane Sue, you are correct, WS3 doesn’t have the walking workouts for cardio. That’s why I like having the 30 Day Plan. The strength workouts are pretty good.

Judy, nice work with the PHA workouts.

Deb, it must be very frustrating to have these recurring infections.

Valerie, your salad dressing recipe looks good. I make a similar vinaigrette.

Have a great afternoon everyone.

I recommend sleeping in a chair because I know it works, but I cant do it myself. I can't sleep upright. our recliner is flat enough so your head and your whole torso is held somewhat up. anything is better than flat for reducing swelling.
we did another snowshoe this morning but much shorter. the snow is crusty in the morning but as it warms up it starts to collapse under foot and becomes very very difficult to travel on. sometimes you stay on top, and sometimes one or both feet fall in 2 feet down. so went for an hour and got back before it got too dicey .

Deb I think any mustard will do, does not have to be Dijon. if I don't have shallot I use a tablespoon of onion and its fine too. hope you get some kind of useful information before too long.
Carolyn hope all works out OK for your daughter.
