Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/24

Good morning.. we did wood loading and unloading and some wood splitting yesterday. then I did PHA premix which probably was not the best idea. oh my I am sore this morning. there is a lot of bending, twisting and lifting with the wood to begin with, not to mention swinging that ax. I'm better after being up for a while but not one of my brighter moves. DH went out this morning for more of it, but no thank you, I will not be doing that.
Cathe is the first person I bought workouts from. I used to see her occasionally on a Fitness TV channel. there was some other person named Sharon, a group of 4 people who did mostly weights, Cory Everson, Kiana something. as I remember they were all on different programs, unpredictable times and days, but Cathe stood out as someone who was serious and who I didn't think would get annoying after a few weeks. all of a sudden, the fitness TV channel disappeared and I remember searching around for Cathe on the Internet. Must be 20 years ago. I bought one DVD from Kathy smith, looked at it about once and tossed. no WAY! not even in my dreams. Before that I watched light TV like Oprah, series, while using the treadmill or elliptical. I can't follow anything very involved, like a movie, while exercising. each activity distracts me from the other.

we are going to an Oscar party. we can't get the broadcast because the signal gets jammed every year. normally we get that station, but not the oscars. and they wonder why viewership has dropped off! cousin has cable so going there to watch. I haven't seen most of the movies yet, but we will have fun anyway.

Today I decided to have an active rest day. I did Ellen Barrett’s 15 Minute Quick Cardio, from her 7 Day Challenge dvd. I followed that with Element Yoga with Alanna Zabel, the Flexibility Practice which was 23 minutes.

Valerie, you were very ambitious yesterday. That’s a lot of upper body work!

Hello to everyone and have a wonderful day.

Valerie, cutting wood and stacking it is more work than a lot of workouts. I remember those workout shows. I used to watch them and follow along with a few once in awhile.

Carolyn, I had an active rest day today too. I did Coffey Fit Raw stretch this morning.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. We have the end of a horrible wind storm, gusts up to 75 mph. It started yesterday afternoon. Actually, they went door to door in the lake shore communities to make sure all were ok and suggested evacuation. Did not make it mandatory however.

Valerie, I could see how you would be hurting after all of that! I think the first workouts I bought were Jane Fonda, a book or something like that. Then I got into The Firm videos. They were Beta format and were $50 each! You had to pay in advance to fund their production, similar to how Cathe has the presales, but there was no discount. Did you have fun at the Oscar party?

Hi to all....hope you had a great weekend!

Today I did Metabolic Blast + the Calorie Crush. My time was 56 minutes with 298 calories burned. Average heart rate was 115 and maximum heart rate was 148. I’m still learning some of the new moves in this workout, but I like it overall.

Deb, wind gusts like that can be frightening. It’s like a hurricane. It’s good that you didn’t have to evacuate.

Valerie, I hope that you enjoyed your Oscar party. I watched about an hour of it, but I haven’t seen any of the movies. I’m not much of a movie person, so I don’t usually see them unless someone else wants to do so.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

Yesterday I did a spin premix from cycle sweat. I was kind of sore to begin with so I did a ten minute warm up on the bike watching the calorie crush from Revd up rumble. would need to moderate the jumping, there's a lot, but doable with modifying. after 10 min, I put on cycle sweat and did a premix for another 35 min . it doesn't have the count down timer but I ended up with 50 min spinning . I haven't used this disk much because I miss the timer. Its hard for me to push myself if I don't see an end point. Dh went out and did more chopping but I needed to let those body parts get the day off.

we had a great evening! cousin and his wife are absolutely genius at a party celebration . Tai sets up such beautifully arranged plates of food, I am in awe. (I have zero skills). She can make a tray of vegetables and fruits look like artwork. she had a string of gold beads strung out on the table, and some champagne flutes with a raspberry floating in sparkling wine. printed up Oscar ballots so we all voted before the show and tabulated our scores. none of us had seen many nominated movies /documentaries but it was a FUN show. Moved right along, lots of interesting people and costumes and funny and touching moments. I'm sure many went over my head because I haven't seen most movies yet. They had a prize for whoever won the Oscar ballot quiz and I kicked butt there. I am very good at guessing! none of us had seen more than a few of the movies or documentaries , but the winners were a diverse group of people. a little political commentary but not over the top. so we had a really fun evening. from what I've read, not sure Green Book should have been the winner, but I seldom agree on best Picture award. I enjoy movies with subtitles, on the home screen, and without the ridiculous volume in movie theaters. IMO the Oscars program was a huge success. I love awards programs and this was FUN.

Deb, Judy and Lori...hope you are getting thru the latest winter blast! 75 MPH is scary and damaging. we did not head for MT again because weather is awful there. blizzards , snow, roads closed. its nice again here so we are in the right place.

Today I did Lite Metabolic time saver #1 calorie crush skipping the stretch, 17 minutes, met 8.60, 130 calories, heart rate average 131, max 163, 1,718 steps. I then did Ripped with Hiit Lift It Hiit It Legs, 41 minutes, met 9.0, 319 calories, heart rate 116 average, 144 max, 2,098 steps. Total time was 58 minutes, calories burned 449 calories, 3,816 steps. I still have such sore shoulders and neck pain. I am trying to work around using that area. I spent some time with my therapy balls this morning and did some stretching before I started.

Diane Sue, would you tell me again your thoughts about Ancient Nutrition Collagen? I am having hair problems again and I think I should go back to using collagen powder. I used Vital Proteins before.

Good evening all,

I have not read posts but will do so tonight and post in more detail tomorrow. Work has been a challenge. My CEO that I LOVED resigned last week. I am devastated. We have a new person that started today. He does seem nice and I am trying to be optimistic. Somehow, I have managed to keep up with my rotation. I did sub in a couple a bounces. Made me feel better.

Valerie...I did quickly breeze through and noticed the wind comment. The wind is insane. Just walking to my car tonight after work I felt I was in the middle of a hurricane. Driving home branches were everywhere.

I will catch up tomorrow!

Hope everyone is having some great workout!

Carolyn, here is a run down from Dr Axe on the different types of collagen and uses.
I have pretty much stuck with the multi collagen since it has them all in it. When I have taken the Mercola joint formula it has the Egg shell membrane collagen in it. I think the type 1 and 3 is generally put in skin hair and nail products and egg shell is supposed to be good for that as well. I have spent so much time lately reading stuff on collagen and other joint help products. Dr Axe does have the beauty collagen formula, but I have not tried it. I tried the beauty and sleep one in lavender and have not tried again since they do have another flavor now. I am using the multi collagen rest and recovery at night and multi collagen regular in the mornings. I think they are just coming out with a collagen and protein powder combo. I saw something on Amazon, which seems to come out with things before they show up on the website. This last time I tried the Cold Brew Multi collagen. I won't do that again. For one thing it has some caffeine in it. It is not sweet which is why I bought it, thinking it would replace a cup of coffee. I ended up adding it to a half cup of coffee with hot water because it was not strong enough. Then I mixed it into plain yogurt with dark chocolate chips : ) Plain seems best to me. I don't know if I want to try another flavor. They have developed a lot. I have used vital proteins off and on. I really can't say that I noticed anything with it, as I mostly use Ancient nutrition. I would not veer off to unknown brands because China is know for bad quality collagen products.

Deb, those winds sound terrible. You probably had things flying all over the place outside. I remember my son having the cover come undone and blow away off of his hot tub when we had really high winds. Fortunately that does not happen often. I remember pre paying for those Firm workouts and they were quite costly.

Carolyn, I have taken a liking to the Lite Metabolic workout and calorie crush. Nice work today. I hope the above post helps. I probably gave you way more info than you needed. I definitely notice a difference when I try not using the collagen for awhile.

Valerie, I hardly ever choose Cycle Max for the same reason. Once the others came out, I would rather use them. The count down timer is a motivator. The Oscar party sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

Lori, that has to be a bit discouraging losing the CEO that you liked. I hope the new one is just as good. Be safe when you go out! That wind and branches flying sounds worrisome.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday.

Carolyn, good job on getting that Calorie Crush down. :) I am using the multi collagen rest and recovery multi collagen that Diane Sue recommended.

Valerie, that party sounds great! Sure would make a pretty boring TV show worth watching. LOL. I never see any of the movies so don't even try to watch that....even if I had a TV..LOL

Diane Sue, sorry about the neck/shoulder pain. What do you think set it off? Yes, all garbage cans and totes flew around, the grill cover blew off, even being weighted down with large stones. No damage as far as we know, but we don't dare look at the roof right now for any missing shingles. We didn't find any around the yard or house so we think we are ok.

Lori, that's too bad about the loss of the CEO that you really like. I hope the new one does not make any drastic changes.

Hi to Judy,

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did a short Peloton ride after work and today I did Barlates Drop Sets, Chest & Back. We are expecting a snow storm starting tonight and going through tomorrow, then another one on Friday. Training at work is going well. Yesterday was mostly going over safety training on the computer. Tomorrow I will be there for opening then doing training on the floor.

Deb-We had high winds here too, but not as bad as you did. That sounds really scary.

Lori-I'm sorry that your CEO resigned :( I hope that the new one will be a good one too. That's great that you have been keeping up with your workouts.

Carolyn-Great job with Metabolic Blast and the Calorie Crush!

Diane Sue-Thanks for the info on the collagen. I finally ordered the rest & recovery one. I'm looking forward to trying it.

Valerie-I so agree about the countdown timer! I think that's why I love Pedal Power and do it more than Cycle Sweat. Having a timer makes a big difference to me. Some of Jessica Smith's workouts have timers too and I tend to prefer those over the ones that don't.

Take care,

Judy

Today I did Cardio Party Calorie Crush (Step) followed by Cardio Party round 1 only. My time was 40 minutes with 317 calories burned. My average heart rate was 135 and maximum heart rate was 174. I wanted to start with the Calorie Crush but didn’t see a premix like that. I enjoyed the step portion even though I couldn’t get all the steps. It will be easier the next time because of the repetition.

Lori, I’m sorry that your CEO resigned. It’s hard to have turnover like that when you don’t know what to expect from the next person. I’m glad that you were able to get your bouncing in.

Diane Sue, thanks for the info on Collagen. It confirmed much of what I thought. I ordered the Ancient Nutrition plain variety. Dry skin and thinning hair are problems associated with my thyroid condition. It was much better when I was using the Collagen and I regret that I stopped.

Judy, it must feel good to start the training for your new job.

Hello to Deb and Valerie.

Today I did Cathe Low Impact Challenge from the low impact series, 51 minutes, heart rate average 146, max 179, met 7.50, 4,677 steps, 332 calories. I then did Coffey Fit Raw Just Step , 24 minutes, heart rate 148 average 173 max, 157 calories, met 8.3, 2221 steps. I finished off with Barre Amped Stretch upper body and ball, 22 minutes, 35 calories, met 2.0, 95 steps. Total time was 97 minutes, 524 calories, 6,993 steps.
Getting ready to give Gertie another bath with medicated shampoo. I got a medicated spray today. For some reason she has little bumps, most are gone, but flaking like crazy and she at first had lost some little spots of fur. Odd that it is only on one side of her body. I thought at first it was the Frontline Gold because I had put it on a week before this all developed. It seemed like a lot more came out of the tube than usual and it was kind of running all over the place. I got it from the vet though. The only other thing different is instead of Blue Basics salmon dog food I bought the Blue Buffalo Wilderness Salmon because there was some reviews saying the basic was making dogs sick. I could find no recall. That was about the same time as the Frontline was applied. Still thinking it might have something to do with that. I hope I can get it cleared up without a vet visit. She is not wild about sitting in the shower for 10 to 15 minutes with the shampoo on. It does not smell good. Last time I just put it on and rubbed it into her fur and let her lie on her bed with a towel covering then showered her.

Deb, yes, I can understand not being able to look at the roof right now. I hope it stays intact. I have looked over my calendar and notes and I think my neck and trap issue started around the 15th. The reason I remember this is I did double standing and calorie crush then floor premix from Lite Metabolic. The next day when I did mainly cardio, I felt some discomfort wearing the weight vest doing Raw cardio overload. I remember being relieved getting it off. That was a Friday and last Monday I did Fit Split Metabolic and was sore so did most of last week as lower and cardio till Thursday when I did Raw home Gym Intervals with the tread climber and there was quite a bit of shoulder and back movement with the weight intervals, also I felt my shoulders and neck tighten just holding onto the handles of the tread climber. Silly me, I followed that with Ripped with Hiit upper circuit and Pyramid Pump biceps and triceps(avoided shoulders on the Pyramid) From Friday through this week so far I have not done any weights that were shoulder and upper back intensive. I pushed too hard and am paying for it.

Judy, we started out in the 40's and temps are dropping. It is 28 right now and we have wet weather coming in. So, much for the spring like weather. When do you actually start working there? I don't imagine people are heading to the garden center quite yet. I like the flavor of the rest and recovery multi collagen.

Carolyn, I have thought I would rather do the calorie crush from Cardio Party and from Metabolic to the beginning of a workout instead of on the end. I have moved it by using just it and the warm up and then moving on to the rest. I think it is much better that way while I have the most energy. Cardio Party Calorie Crush is a lot of jumping, easily modified and really is doable anyway since it is short and intense, not a full long workout of that type of work.
I have extreme dry mouth all of the time along with skin. I have added more fish oil Mega red 1000 mg to my supplements. The Arthritis foundation recommends up to 2.6 gm two times a day for osteo arthritis and RA. I had only been taking one capsule a day. I have read that fish oil helps with dry mouth and skin and hair. Also along with that and my collagen supplements I make sure I take some hyaluronic acid separately if there is not some added to my other joint supplements.
I need to place my order for some more multi collagen. I started to last night and got side tracked.

Glad I am not sounding like a wuss. I like to see how much time I have before the end of each spin song. It lets me decide how "all out" I can go, and for how long. I have all 4 spin workouts but use the 2 with timers more. yesterday I did cycle sweat for 20 or 25 min and then Stacked upper, twice thru the first 2 segments, and only once thru the last segment. 35 min or so. Judy, I like cycle Sweat even without the countdown timer, and am trying to use it in short segments so the timer doesn't matter as much. I wanted a good warm up and 20 min of spinning does that. for a full workout though, I agree, I am likely to hold back so Im sure I can finish. If I see remaining time, it helps me judge how hard I can go.
most of the soreness from wood chopping had resolved by yesterday but my sister called and had to call back before dinner, so workout got shortened a tad.

this morning we went snowshoeing for 3.5 hours. nothing technical, but the snow is very inconsistent and there is a lot of it, down very low so normal vehicles are stopped at the hwy junction. if it's not plowed, you are not driving up off the main hwy. big snow berm and too deep immediately.
snowshoeing is more work than you expect. the snow was alternately hard /crusty or soft, deep, and powdery. skiing would be very hard with conditions switching every few yards. we went several miles, it was beautiful outside sunny and cold, 25 or so. we need to do taxes tomorrow so we will recover then. maybe do a road ride in the afternoon if its not too cold.

Deb, I'm an awards show junkie! I love them. I haven't seen most nominees. too hard to see in theaters. I wish the volume wasn't so loud. I watch with my hands over my ears, and I like to watch with subtitles. I use award shows to line up what I want to see at home as they are released.
against my better judgement..... we watched Roma last night. Blech. Yuck. what a pointless, wretched, tedious uninteresting movie. Lynda (garance), if you read this thread, tell me what you thought. no idea why it was nominated for anything, or why the woman was nominated for best actress. I didn't think it looked very good from the clips I'd seen, but we tried anyway. NO. don't waste 2 hours 15 min of your life. I kept thinking since it was nominated for many awards there must have been redeeming qualities somewhere. No.
Lori, its awful to lose a boss you really like, and then have to start over with an unknown quantity. hope new guy is OK.

Good morning,

PT exercises yesterday, including the bike for 10 minutes. Kudos to all of you that can do those workouts! I have a really hard time staying on for 10 minutes.

Judy, true to form, we are getting your weather prediction from yesterday as ours today. We are supposed to get a storm tonight, 5-6 inches of snow. Good luck at the new job! :).

Diane Sue, it does sound like Gertie may have had a reaction to the Frontline. I hope the bath helps. Do you think it was the vest that started it all?

Valerie, I'm with you....I may want to see a movie after all the hoopla is over, but seeing your experience with that one, I don't even think I will read anything about them. I hate to admit, but I have no idea what was nominated or any of the actors etc.

Hi to Carolyn & Lori,

Take care,

Deb, I am not the best at fitness equipment workouts. That is why I mostly use Kelly's home gym intervals so I can break up the cardio segments into short bursts.
My neck and traps were already bothering me some when I wore the vest. The weight of it though was really bothering me and aggravated it though.

Today I did PHA 2 which was 48 minutes and 188 calories burned (the calories seemed low today, not sure why). My average heart rate was 103 and maximum heart rate was 143.

Diane Sue, nice work with Low Impact Challenge, Raw Step, and Barre Amped Stretch. Low Impact Challenge is a workout that I never choose these days. I have done it many times, but I didn’t care for it. Your comments about fish oil reminded me that I haven’t been taking that either. I need to get back to it.

Deb, it’s good that you were able to do the PT exercises and bike riding. I like the bike, but haven’t used it in a while. I have to adjust to the feel of the seat every time that I start using it again.

Valerie, I like count down timers too. That’s great that you were able to go snow shoeing yesterday. Some of the movies from the Academy Awards show looked interesting and I thought that I might make an effort to see them, but Roma isn’t one of them. My impression was that it would be depressing and a little boring.

Hello to Lori and Judy. Have a great afternoon everyone.
