Good morning,

Today I did KCM's Split Sessions- upper body. Haven't done this one is a while, forgot that I liked it a lot. :)

Valerie, it's good to be cautious and stick to upper body workouts for a while. I don't even think you should do the elliptical, it still involves the legs, especially calves.

what is everyone up to today? Lots of HouseMax for me....took too much time off yesterday for fun things, now all the stuff on my list is still there to be done.

good morning deb. I've been walking quite normally and have had zero discomfort. this is the most bizarre injury( or whatever it is) that I've ever had.

They told me my lab results would be posted online in a couple hours but nothing . we think the on call doc was wrong and that my pcp has to sign off on the before I will have access, and since she was not on call this weekend it probably won't happen unril Monday.

DH said that if there were any worrisome values, someone would have called. I'm not so sure about that on a weekend. whatever. I still have a purplish area under one eye but its not worse, maybe even a little better, and no other spots. my leg feels pretty good so I will do something today like burn sets and core. I may sit on the spin bike to get an idea of whether that might work. same with the elliptical.
we are joining the rest of you ( except Josie) with snow. probably no more than an inch though.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did RK with 1 lb. gloves.

Valerie, what a strange injury--and you have no idea how it happened. How did they detect a tear in your gastrocnemius without an MRI? Knowing how active you are, I'm sure this is disappointing.

Yesterday was so spring-like--reached into the 50s and the sun was brilliant. Very mild today as well. Went to see The Great Beauty but was not blown away. There is a certain self-loathing peculiar to wealthy Italians I think, or at least it comes through in a lot of their films. The film owes a great deal especially to Fellini, but also Antonioni, but does not really achieve either the satiric heights of Fellini or the world-weary anomie of Antonioni. It was okay.

DH is still suffering from a nasty cold, so we will not be going out tonight as we usually do. I think I may watch Dallas Buyers Club on Amazon Instant video this afternoon because it's no longer in the theaters and I would like to see it before the Oscars next weekend.

Well Deb and Lori, it sounds as though we are in for another Arctic blast later in the week. Sigh!

Hi to Josie and Judy!

a very strange injury. There are problems with one group of antibiotics (quinolones) causing potential connective tissue problems but not much we could find with the meds I took. I took 2 antibiotics at the same time as prescribed.... it gets hard to sort out if there's a connection at all. most of the issues are GI ...nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea etc. I am never bothered by that.

the back of knee pain/top of calf issue ( to my understanding) is a "rule out" diagnosis. docs start with a list of the things it could be, then eliminate them, one at a time. what's left is what you probably have.
I had an ultrasound ... ruled out DVT & bakers cyst. (whew!) I can't get MRI's because of my pacer. then a physical exam by an orthopod indicated no meniscus or ligament instability issues so pretty much the only thing left is a gastroc tear which fit with what I was describing. a small one, as I am a lot better already, but I won't overdo. I had meniscal injury and an ACL tear on my left knee 10 years ago so I know what that felt like and where, and this was not the same at all. I never had a right knee injury but the discomfort from the shoes is unlikely to cause this. we may never know. I know I will be careful if I ever need this antibiotic combo again. it's always hard to prove 'cause and effect".

During one of the snowboard competitions during the early Olympics, one snowboarder fell in the halfpipe. when they replayed it slowly you can clearly see his tibia/fibula shoved upward out of line from his knee... that was the end of (at least) his ACL. awful to watch.

Lynda hope you dodge DH's cold. so hard when you are in the same house. I am looking forward to DBC... please review it if you get to watch it.

As it turns out, it's raining in California this week, and we had snow and ice here so we would not have left as planned anyway. so I will be around for the Oscars... love awards shows even if it does drag out too long.

Good morning,

Today I did Walk Fit for 35 minutes on the treadmill.

Well it's the start of another week, and it's snowing again.

Valerie, do you think that the leg and bruise issue could come from the meds for your fingers? Since you don't remember hurting yourself...and the timing was right. Doesn't make sense though. Very strange.

Garance, how was that movie? I looked at it over at Amazon Prime...I think it's free there...I can't wait to watch the finale of DA tonight or tomorrow...not sure when yet.

Hi to Judy, Josie, & Lori,

Work, then class tonight...

Take care, and stay warm!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did LLA (48:33).

Deb, I watched Dallas Buyers Club at Amazon, but it's not free ($4.99). That's still cheap as far as movie tickets go. I found it very moving. It's based on the life and death of Ron Woodruf, played by Matthew McConaughy. He is a real Texas redneck and homophobe at the beginning of the film, and something of a con man and womanizer. When he finds out that he has AIDS (from unprotected sex with prostitutes) and the doctors tell him he has about 30 days to live, he doesn't believe it at first because he thinks this is a disease for homosexuals. He tries to be part of an AZT trial being conducted at a local hospital but is refused and instead finds someone at the hospital willing to steal the drug for him. When he runs out of this option, he heads to Mexico where there are other drugs available not approved by the FDA and after several months of taking these drugs, he loads up his car with a huge supply, dresses as a priest, and cons his way over the border with the drugs. He sets himself up as a club, and with a monthly fee of $400, members are given their drugs. He also enlists the help of a transgender gay, self-named Rayon and played with extraordinary tenderness and sweetness by Jared Leto. Of course, all of this ends badly, with complications from the FDA and big nasty pharma, but Ron really grows as a character, coming to care deeply for Rayon as a fellow suffering human being, but also just striving to give his one life meaning. He prolongs his life from 30 days to seven years and never gives up his fight against the FDA and the big pharmaceutical company that wants a monopoly on drugs for HIV. I can really understand why McConaughy and Leto have been nominated for Oscars. It's really hard to be credible when you fully transform your essential character, your soul, over the course of a 2 hour film, but McConaughy does it. Riding a bull in the rodeo becomes something of a metaphor for his courage and sheer stubborn will to live.

That's my review for you, Valerie.

Spring has departed and we are back in the deep freeze. Ugh!

Deb, I will be interested to hear what you think of DA's finale.

Hi Ladies,

My ride went well and the other workouts that I posted. Today is my day off so no workout. I just need to go to the market.

Garance, thank you for the review. I will watch it later on today.

Lori and Judy, the body pump classes are by Les Mills and are taught by trained instructors, but the good thing about taking the class at the gym is that it's a bit different every time.

Valerie, hope that you feel better soon.

Hi to Deb!

Josie

Deb, we ALL do some pretty hard stuff routinely. all I did was a bike ride... doesn't even stress the calf. but it was sore for a while and I thought it was the shoes. so yes, I will never prove it, but I think it was the meds. When you look up any medicine, there is a list a mile long of problems. some are well documented and are common, like the GI issues with most antibiotics. the rest of the list is more obscure things that may or may not be related..... basically any drug potentially can cause anything.

DH and I went shopping this morning, walked all around Costco, the parking lot, and not even a twinge of discomfort. the bruise under my eye is fading. this is just too weird. I feel fine. normal. it is not what I expected after Friday.
forgot to say I DID do an upper body workout yesterday. ch, sh, ba. plus core 1. the only thing I did differently was push ups / planks on my knees just in case the toe position might stress the calf. I will do bi's and tris core 1 today but I am getting less worried about it. still won't get on treadmill, but I think the elliptical or bike will be fine.

Lynda... thank you for the detailed review. you do a way better job than the newspaper. looking forward to this one.

Good evening ladies!

Well never got to have dinner with the girls on Sunday. Coming home on Friday after work I hit a pothole. When I went to go do errands on Saturday it was flat. I was not happy since I just bought 4 new tires less than 2 weeks ago. I put air in it to get me to the tire place only for them to confirm that the tire is ruined and I need a new one which they would need to order since my car is still very unique. I have a little Fiat. I think I was foaming at the mouth. So the donut went on and I drove home and there it stayed until this morning. My DH had to work on Sunday for a few hours so no way was I driving over an hour to dinner with a donut tire. Just not safe to do this.

Valerie...wow so sorry to read of all your troubles. Crazy how it all came on suddenly. I agree with Deb about the timing with the antibiotics for your hand. This is all very strange.

Lynda...I really did not care if I saw Dallas Buyers Club, however, your review completely changed my opinion. Great review.

Jose and Deb...thanks on the tip for Les Mills Pump. I will pass on it. Sounds like something I would get bored with quickly. I started taking inventory of my workouts and have decided I really do not need any more. I need to concentrate on what I have before I start to buy more. Hoping Cathe does not come out with anything soon though. I may not be able to restrain from buying hers though.

We had such a nice weekend and this week cold again! :(. Oh... I actually did a p90x3 workout tonight instead of having a rest day! Yeah!

Good morning,

No workout today, too tired from getting home late last night after class. We had a good time there though so it was worth it.

Garance, thanks for the review! I watched part of the DA finale before class, and will watch the rest tonight.

Josie, the Les Mills classes all look great, and would be fun to do "live". The DVD's, not so much. Like you mentioned, the same class every time was very repetitive and got to be boring.

Valerie, it sounds like everything is back to normal, I would agree, it was probably the meds.

Lori, what's up with tires this year? I think 2 or 3 of us had to get tires fixed or replaced.. I feel the same way about workouts right now, however KCM is filming again, and her next 2 sound like ones I would like...I agree, I hope Cathe puts off any new workouts for a while, I don't want to buy any more, but can never turn down her presales.

Judy, how is FIL doing with the oxygen etc?

Work, then home to watch the rest of the Downton Abbey finale. I got my replacement DVD's yesterday, and they are a lot different. I can't believe it's already over.

Good Morning Everyone,

I took both Saturday and Sunday off of working out. I really felt like I needed a short break and we had to spend quite a lot of time at FILs both days so it worked out ok. Yesterday I did an hour of spinning and core max 1. Today I think I will do Muscle Max.

FIL had a rough weekend. He is having a hard time dealing with Oxygen.
It's more emotional than physical though. He caught on how to use it pretty quickly but he doesn't like it. We tried to take him out to dinner and he refused, saying he doesn't want to be seen in a restaurant with oxygen on. I wasn't expecting that. Having the Oxygen generator in his living room is a constant reminder of how ill he is. He was somewhat in denial of his condition before but now he can't deny it. His cable went out Sunday, which didn't help things, as watching TV is the only thing he does now. DH tried to fix it but it was a Comcast issue, so there was nothing he could do. It's back on now. FIL goes back to the Pulmonary doctor next week and has another memory assessment the last week of March.

Lynda-thanks for the great review of the Dallas Buyer's Club. I didn't even know what it was about, but now I want to see it too.
We are also back in the deep freeze :(

Valerie-I agree it was probably the medicine you had to take that caused the problem. They all have side effects, some worse than others.

Lori-I'm sorry about your flat tire :( It's too bad you didn't get to go to the dinner. I feel the same about not needing any more workouts, I still have quite a few that I haven't done yet.

Deb-I can't believe DA season is over already! I'll be interested in hearing how everyone felt about the ending.

Hi to Josie!

Judy

I'm going to yoga this morning. yesterday I did flextrain bi's and tris and 15 min on the elliptical. again, all fine. no discomfort whatsoever. I thought I'd be limping and off without workouts for at least a week... this is completely unexpected. I am nervous though, thinking it can't be healed this quickly. Friday I was on crutches!! and in a wheelchair! the next morning it was "gone". off to cl;ass

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Afterburn (54:00).

Valerie, do you have a follow-up on the gastrocnemius issue? It does seem strange (like you went to a faith healer--hah!) to be in a wheelchair one day and not even gimpy the next. On the other hand, it's also great to be feeling good again.

Judy, your FIL sounds like his ego has been crushed and he is now embarrassed by his illness. It's really too bad that he has such a limited social life because I'm sure he would discover there are many elders afflicted with similarly humiliating conditions. Aging is no fun. All you can do is soldier on I guess and hope that he yields to the realization that your husband and you cannot be his sole supports for independent living.

Lori, that is really irritating to have new tires and then need to replace them. I am thinking of going back to the XTrain rotations with a few tweaks in March and recycle some old workouts in here and there. I remember liking the Drill Max 60 min. premix and I haven't done AT or Cardio Supersets in a long time.

Deb, I ended up liking the DA finale better than I expected after reading the EW blurb-review. I do agree that the 8 month lapse is kind of weird because almost everything seems the same except that Edith is no longer pregnant. Boy did she recover her flapper flatness quickly!

Hi to Josie in enviably warm lala land!

there is another group of antibiotics ( quinolones) that are known for being implicated in tendon ruptures, but not the two I was on. the two drugs together... hard to be sure. plus I was taking some NSAIDS for the discomfort. I do know that the calf pain and subsequent tear started while on the 2 antibiotic combo. I've taken the NSAID for short periods many times before without problems. the problems disappeared abruptly..... within 24 hours of finishing the antibiotics. I was too nervous about it to do much on Saturday. the spontaneous bruising has never happened before either. so I personally am quite sure this was connected to the meds.

Loti the stinks about the tire. tires are so expensive too. and I just read sunday that new cars will be eliminating even the bicycle size spare tire /jack . being replaced will be a tire inflation kit to save weight and expense. hard to imagine! I would not feel OK in a car without a spare. sometimes tires are damaged and are not "inflatable".

we watched Captain Phillips last night. Excellent movie. tom hanks... terrific as usual. I don't think he was nominated for best actor but he is very good. maybe people just expect he will always be excellent and he doesn't get any more honors? I knew about the boat hijackings that occurred a few years ago off Somalia, but I didn't know that this was a huge container ship. I was under the impression it was a smaller vessel.... not a small sailboat which seems understandable and unfortunate, but this was a huge commercial vessel. wow. and they were basically unarmed and unable to defend themselves against a couple determined Somalis in a teeny motor boat with automatic rifles. since it seems not to happen anymore, I imagine boats are now better able to defend themselves. excellent movie though. highly recommended.

Judy, I agree with Lynda. FIL is so isolated he doesn't realize that most people his age need some sort of support. O2, walkers, canes, wheelchairs, hearing aids, vision issues like mac degeneration and on and on. people both worse off, and better off with a wide range of things "wrong" that don't work right anymore. if he were in more of a community setting he might feel more like "one of the gang".

Lynda, I'm not planning to follow up with anyone on this further. I'm better. It's in my record what I was on and if I ever need to be again, I will be way careful about any unexplained muscle pains. Ill restart workouts with riding and elliptical and upper body weights, and then gradually reintroduce workouts with more intense calf involvement. it still tore something and even if it feels normal, I will respect that for a few weeks and not over stress it.

I'm trying to skip over any words about DA as I won't see if for a while yet and don't want spoilers.

Good morning,

Woke up at 3:00.....dozed for a bit then got up at 3:50 and did a premix from All Out HIIT. That core section is tough.

Judy, my Dad and MIL went through the same thing when they were told that they had to be on oxygen 24/7. Embarrassed to go out etc. My Dad would wear it when he was in his house, but not outside. I agree with others, when/if he was in an assisted living place and others wore it too, he probably would not feel so bad about it.

Valerie, it seems like your mystery disease is gone! Good news.

Garance, took your lead and did a premix from All Out Hiit this morning, as I had forgotten all about it...I may try to insert some of the other XTrain stuff in my workouts.

DA SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER!! :)

I liked the finale of DA, but it didn't seem like the end...I kept thinking my DVD was shorted or something...the last scene was Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Carson in the water right? Who would have ever thought..?

HI To Josie & Lori,

Work, then home to hibernate... Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Burn Sets ch, ba, sh (50:43).

DA CONVERSATION WITH DEB: DON'T READ

Deb, that was definitely the last scene. I thought that whole thing about the letter was pretty lame, given how many plots are still hanging fire. I also thought it was weird that we leap over 8 mos. but except for Edith, everything seems about the same in terms of other relationships.

BACK TO OTHER DIALOGUE

Deb, I actually like Core 1, and do not especially like Core 2, although I haven't done this one in a long time. The core in Flextrain is kind of tough for me too. It seems to hurt my hips to do those side-to-side twists with a leg or legs in the air. I admire your fortitude working out at 4 in the morning.

Really cold here with a nasty wind. Hibernation sounds lovely.

Valerie, glad to hear you seem back to normal.

Thanks for separating out the DA stuff.... I want a few surprises left.

did a bike ride today, 25 miles. all fine, not a twinge. I forget if I posted yesterday, but did 30 on the elliptical yesterday. calf is totally unaffected and seems completely normal, like nothing happened. I am totally confused with how this turned out.

I like the core 1 and I know I did core 2 but haven't done it in a long time...so long I don't remember what I didn't like. core 1 flows easily for me from one exercise to the next, and no dread factor. I like the flextrain one too but I decided to make sure I didn't cause any leg problems and stick to easy, repetitive leg moves for a little longer.

wow Deb that's strong work for 4 am.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your comments regarding FIL, I totally agree and hopefully we will be able to move him to assisted living soon. I hate to see him isolate himself even more just because he is embarrassed.

I was hoping that I wouldn't have to post any more sad news but it looks like Echo has FIP:(. Last week she started limping and having trouble using her back legs. We went to the vet again and this time they knew something was wrong as she can barely stand up now. She has lost weight too. Based on her symptoms and blood work the vet says he thinks she has the "dry" form of FIP. He did more blood work today to try to come closer to a diagnosis but there really isn't a test the will say for certain if she has it.

I don't know much about FIP but I am learning and it's a horrible disease. I can't believe that we are going to lose our 3rd cat in less than 6 months.:( It's just one of those things that you risk happening when you adopt kittens that have been around lots of other cats, like in a shelter.

I am trying to make sense of it all, losing Tiger & Misty and now this, in such a short period of time. :( I have come to the conclusion that everything happens for a reason and I am glad she is with us. We will take care of her and make as comfortable as we can for whatever time she is with us.

Judy, I am so sorry to hear about Echo...:(. She will have had a wonderful time with you and your DH, even if it is shorter than you expected. She is loved and well cared for, and that is all that counts.

Good evening ladies!

Been doing great with workouts...Ruthless in the morning and P90x at night. Tonight i did not workout out though. Just wasn't feeling it.

Valerie...wow what a weird thing to happen. Glad all seems better with you. You are so fortunate. You are correct with new cars and no spare. When I bough my car 2 years ago I paid for the "option" to have a spare. Can't imagine not having one.

Lynda and Deb...you girls are funny with the spoiler alerts! I still have not watched the finale but of course I read your comments!!! Does not bother me that I know. Not with this series. Seems like this season was kind of lackluster. Some things were good and intense but to me it was not as good as prior seasons. Perhaps when I watch the finale I will think differently.

Judy...I am so sorry to hear about your FIL. This must be so difficult. Oh and Echo. Oh no. I do not no what FIP is and after I type this I plan to look up. I am the same way and believe things happen for a reason too. You were meant to care for this wonderful animal. It still does not make it easy on you to do so especially so soon. My thoughts and prayers are with you...between your FIL and now your kitty. :(
