Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/16

diane sue that is exactly what the delivery person could get blamed for, and get a bad mark on his record or fired. I called amazon yesterday and explained what happened , and that the driver was not at fault. since I am the account holder my statement should protect him. if sister had any money, an electric fence would be good, but she has a fenced back yard. the dog was in the house this time. if she stands with the door open, she should put the dog somewhere else. the first event happened less than a week ago, so this was time #2. dog didn't get a chance for #3. I feel bad this happened, its bad for everyone, but blaming the driver is just ridiculous.

Valerie, I am glad that you called Amazon.

I was looking at some of my print outs from the Arthritis Foundation and it says that glucosamine can increase cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. For some reason I thought it was chondroitin and bought Schiff glucosamine without chondroitin. I guess when you think about it it comes from shellfish. I have to go over what I am using for my joints I guess. Some of the supplements are blood thinners. The doctor suggested a low dose aspirin, but really I worry about adding that. What made me go back and check is I am having some surgery to lift my outer eyelid that casts shadows over my eye and obstructs some vision. They said do not take any aspirin and I was thinking a lot of things like curcumin and bromelain are also blood thinners. Also fish oil.

This morning I did LiTE Pyramid Pump Lower Body, up only premix. That was 35 minutes and 169 calories burned. My average heart rate was 116 and maximum heart rate was 156. This is the workout that has the side and rear slides on the disc. I don’t like doing the full five sets each of those moves. I also did Jane Adams Gentle Yoga evening practice for an additional 28 minutes and 33 calories.

Valerie, I’m glad that you called Amazon in support of the driver. You don’t want someone to lose their job over another person’s negligence.

Diane Sue, I didn’t realize that about glucosamine raising cholesterol. You certainly have to be careful with supplements the same as you do with prescription medication.

Hello to Deb and Judy.

Thank you for your support... DH did not like that I called amazon, but he doesn't know my sister like I do. I wanted to be SUIRE no one lost a job or was disciplined for this. have not heard from sister which is just fine.

Diane sue I agree with carolyn. aspirin is well researched, but supplements, especially their strength, is not as predictable and they might be additive. I would stop taking anything in question well ahead of time. My mother got to the point where she had to push her upper eyelid out of the way. DH also has lid overhang. I would not hesitate to get this fixed. I have not heard this about glucosamine. its the only supplement I take.

we skied this morning. it was a lovely morning but the snow was awful. it got worse as it warmed up. we went for an hour, and then tried to get back down without killing ourselves. dry and fluffy in the shade and crusty and icy or sticky in sunny spots. I used to be a strong xc skier but I'm having a tough time with new skis and boots. the old skis were delaminating in layers so we had to switch. bad conditions don't help the process.
yesterday we worked on our replacement garden wall. the landscape bricks are heav

Today I did Step Sync, 58 minutes, heart rate 117/144, 272 calories, 5,810 steps. I also did Jessica Smith youtube 1 mile walk and talk stress relief, 15 minutes, 78 calories, heart rate 121/152 (surprising after what I got for Step Sync) 1,852 steps. I walked faster than she was a did some as a light jog though. For stretching I did Jane Adams morning energy yoga segment, 22 minutes, heart rate 85/95, 22 calories, 96 steps. Total time was 95 minutes, 7,758 steps, 372 calories. I thought maybe my Fit Bit Blaze still being linked to my cell phone might be affecting the Versa 2 so removed it this morning. It didn't make a difference. I can't even find the Blaze. It was lying on the desk turned off in my workout room. I know it has been turned on because my phone kept trying to sync to the blaze this morning. I think my 5 year old grandson may have done something with it. I have looked all over the place. Will ask him tomorrow. I found a Mexican Black Bean Spaghetti recipe that I used to make a lot when I was doing a vegetarian type diet. I want to get the stuff and make it again. I used to keep the ingredients around all of the time. I stocked up on black bean pasta when I would visit Oklahoma City.

Carolyn, yes, you do have to be careful with supplements. I try to only buy well known sources that are monitored and look for things that should not be taken with my medications. I imagine there are many people who do not do that. I also list all of them with my arthritis doctor. If I quit something they take it off. But, the responsibility really belongs to me. I did go and read up on types of collagen and whether it works too. Studies shows it does help and should be taken on an empty stomach with vitamin C. But, I probably should avoid the marine collagen. I also have been trying to find a link to some of my problems. I was taking mostly all types of collagen mixed like Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen. Right now I am using a joint formula from Garden of Life in tablets that has chicken collagen with things like curcumin and boswelia in it.
I am not real fond of doing gliding discs on the lower body workouts. It was uncomfortable on my knee the other day when I did PHA 3 lower body only mix with one foot on the step and the other on the disc.

Valerie, I think you did the right thing. There are a lot of supplements that can interact with blood thinners and also cause problems with diabetics. I set back most of my supplements for now till I am done with the procedure. I don't think I will go back to taking the glucosamine. I have used it off and on for years though. My daughter was the one that pointed out to me that I would be a candidate for that lid surgery. She says she has a lot of elderly patients that come in to her office that have had it done and were glad they did. It just seems like the last couple of years it has gotten way worse. When my allergies get bad and my eyes get puffy it is even worse. My daughter says she thinks she will have the same thing happen. I guess she has seen enough stuff on it since she is a dermatologist.
We had a few snow flakes this morning, but nothing to stay on the ground. It is too warm for that. I am glad because I pick up my grandson tomorrow.
On dosages, I go on the low side. If I went for the doses even the arthritis foundation suggests it seems like way too much. It would be triple the one fish oil capsule I take a day. I am sensitive to a lot of stuff anyway.
Sorry the skiing was bad. Good that you spent some time on the garden wall.

This morning I did Lite Cardio Party, 40 minutes, heart rate 116/156, 227 calories, 3,925 steps. I wanted to do back so did Lite Muscle Meltdown back skipping pull over moves and adding moves from Physical Therapy, 22 minutes, 45 calories, 335 steps, heart rate 95/108. I finished with Jessica Smith Gentle Yoga neck and shoulders and a couple of minutes of foam rolling, 22 minutes, 25 calories, heartrate 84/99, 31 steps. Total time 84 minutes, 297 calories.
I need to get ready to go pick up my grandson so will check back later.
Weights
Back Giant sets 12 reps each move 3 rounds
1 arm row 20# db all rounds
skipped pull over and used a band looped over my spin bike for the right angle and did straight arm pull downs 12 reps all rounds
1 arm wide row 15# all rounds
skipped 1 arm pullover and rnd 1 did standing band rows 24 reps round 1, round 2 I did 12 reps of standing band pull downs and 12 of the band rows, round 3 I did side lying rotators with 5# 12 reps on each side
(It took me a bit to decide which moves to use, I probably should have used 3 # for the rotators as that is what they used for me at first till we dropped the weight at PT.

Today I did Step Sync, combos 1, 2, and 3 and no finished product. My time was 47 minutes with 357 calories burned. My average heart rate was 134 and maximum heart rate was 159.

Diane Sue, I see that you did the full Step Sync workout yesterday. It’s odd that your Fitbit data is lower now. I had noticed that our readings were similar in the past. Great job with Cardio Party, Muscle Meltdown Back, and JS Gentle Yoga neck and shoulder flow.

Hello to Valerie, Deb, and Judy.

Here is what it says about glucosamine on the herbs and supplements section of the arthritis foundation website:

Glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, N-acetyl glucosamine

Origin: Major component of joint cartilage. Supplements are derived from the shells of shellfish (such as shrimp, lobster and crab) or from vegetable sources.

Claims: Slows deterioration of cartilage, relieve osteoarthritis (OA) pain and improves joint mobility.

What we know: Glucosamine produced in the body provides natural building blocks for growth, repair and maintenance of cartilage. Like chondroitin, glucosamine may lubricate joints, help cartilage retain water and prevent its breakdown.

Studies:  In 2016, a large multinational trial found combined glucosamine and chondroitin to be as effective at reducing pain, stiffness and swelling in knee OA as the NSAID celecoxib, without the cardiovascular and GI side effects of celecoxib. But another 2016 analysis of eight trials of glucosamine and chondroitin found equal numbers of studies showing positive effects and neutral effects. Mayo clinic researchers say evidence supports trying glucosamine sulfate – not glucosamine hydrochloride – with or without chondroitin sulfate for knee OA, especially because the supplements are “inexpensive and side effects are few and far between.”

Dosage: Capsules, tablets, liquid or powder (to be mixed into a drink). Often combined with chondroitin. Phillip Barr, MD, a physician at Duke Integrative Medicine in North Carolina recommends 500 mg to 3 grams of glucosamine and chondroitin a day in divided doses. He also advises patients to stay on the

supplements for at least a month to see if they take effect. After a month, they may stop taking them if they don’t see any improvement.

*Glucosamine may cause mild upset stomach, nausea, heartburn, diarrhea and constipation, as well as increased blood glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride and blood pressure.

*Don’t use glucosamine if you are allergic to shellfish.

*People with glaucoma or intraocular hypertension may also have worsening eye pressure if they take a glucosamine supplement.

Carolyn, I keep trying to work on figuring out why things have changed on my fitbit. It seems my heart rate is lower than normal on the readings as well. This is way lower than any of my heart rate monitors readings have been. I guess I should be happy the readings are not really high. Step Count seems pretty good, although I noticed someone else that did the Step Boss I Max 4 the same day I did had near 6,000 steps when I had over 4,000. So, maybe that is low too.

Diane Sue, when I did the first half of IMAX 4 on Wednesday I had 2565 steps. The step count can vary based on how you move your arms. Have you checked your profile data on Fitbit to make sure it’s accurate? The only other thing that comes to mind is the tightness of your wrist band. That can also affect the accuracy.

We mt biked this morning, the last dry day here for a while again. 1 hr 50 minutes . felt harder than usual this morning but I did it. I was still tired from the ski yesterday. not as muddy as last time. not dry but we didn't get sprayed with mud tossed up by the tires.

I've taken glucosamine for years and never noticed anything. positive or negative. I do one tablet a day. I also take vitamin D 3x a week during winter here.
Id love to get thru Cardio party. maybe someday.

Hi Everyone,
I need to get caught up on posts. Wednesday I did Flex Train and a 30 minute Peloton ride. Yesterday I did a 45 minute Peloton ride and today I did Tabatacise, Tabatas 1-4.

Valerie-I'm sorry about your sister's dog :( It must be so frustrating for you. You definitely did the right thing to call Amazon.

Carolyn-Nice workouts this week!

Diane Sue-You have the Fitbit Versa? I thought I read that there were some issues with accuracy. Have you contacted Fitbit support? Maybe they would send you a new one.
I remember reading the Glucosamine could increase blood sugar but I didn't know about cholesterol.

Hi to Deb!

Judy

Carolyn, I try to move my arms more and even add extra hops and steps here and there trying to get things up. I have loosened and tightened the watch. I bought my Fit Bit from Amazon. Mine is the Versa 2. The thing is it was working well and then they had the update and everything slowed down. Eventually I will just try to take the time to take it back to the factory settings. I have been over settings on my dashboard.

Valerie, I take vitamin d every day because I tend to stay in as much as possible to avoid allergens. I have take glucosamine off and on for years. Nice that you got a ride in before the rains hit. I think that Cardio Party is one of Cathe's more fun workouts.

Judy, I have not contacted Fitbit support yet. Everything I look at tends to lead you to try the forums and read all of their articles before contacting someone. Not sure if they will help since I got it from Amazon. I chose the Versa 2 because I read that there were problems with the screens breaking on the Versa Lite. Nice workouts this week.

This morning I did WS3 One Mike of Motivation for 15 minutes and 104 calories burned. My average heart rate was 125 and maximum heart rate was 142. Then I did Ab Circuits Stability Ball Abs which was 20 minutes and 62 calories burned. Average heart rate 102 and maximum heart rate 130.

Judy, great job with Flex Train, Peloton rides and Tabatacise this week.

Valerie, that’s great that you were able to mountain bike yesterday.

Diane Sue, you should try Fitbit customer service, especially since you have only had the Versa 2 for a short time. They helped me with my husband’s Charge 2 a couple of years ago and that was an Amazon purchase. I think that Amazon is an authorized seller for Fitbit.

Deb, I hope that you are having a good week.

Cardio party looks like a lot of fun… I watch it while I'm on the elliptical because its energizing, I have to watch something, regular TV doesn't work well.
vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin A,D,E,K all are. your body stores it , and extra is not flushed out in your pee. I get it at Costco. it's a higher amount than is recommended for daily use so I take it 3x a week in fall, winter, spring. I used to take calcium supplements but quit years ago when there was some questions raised, and I get a lot of calcium in my regular diet. I'm going to bring the glucosamine up with DH since he is always battling his cholesterol level and losing. he has cut back a lot on sweets for a few weeks to lose a few pounds, but its not so easy to get chol levels checked to see if its made any difference.

Judy, I told her a dozen times how sad it was that she lost her dog so tragically but she was so mad she wasn't listening. there is some twisted thinking there... I should get her compensation to pay for dog's cremation by blaming some innocent party? some dogs are more "street smart" than others, but its the pet owners job to protect them and she failed to do it. it felt almost prophetic to hear this happened so soon after I gave her a big lecture on how lucky the dog was the first time, and how she needed to make sure it didn't happen again. she kept going back to "how would I feel if it was my dog". I'd feel terrible but I wouldn't blame someone else for my negligence.

This morning I did Raw Intervals 5, 36 minutes, 109/146 heart rate, 125 calories, 1,745 steps. Used 5 and 10#. I had to do some of my own moves as this is shoulder intensive, has some squat thrust moves, plank work. I used my rebounder for the cardio segments. Weights are compound moves. I remember now looking at this one and deciding it was not doable as is. I went to the wedding shower and picked up my prescription the called in for my eye lids when I have the surgery and some more things for the birthday dinner tomorrow. I got the German chocolate cake finished and I made a big pan of brownies with pan frosting and oreos for my granddaughter who will be turning 12. I am so glad I have it finished and am not still in the kitchen finishing and cleaning. It seems most of the time I am in there preparing things late at night. It leaves me tired the next day.

Carolyn, some day I am going to get Walk Strong 3. It looks like a really good set to have. I just wish it was not so costly. I guess I should try to contact customer service with my Fit Bit Versa. I think I have tried everything, but taking it back to factory reset and starting over. I just don't think my heart rate should be where it is, although when I looked at resting heart rates each day it is the same as it has always been. But, the readings are much lower than I feel it should be for workouts that I have been doing.
Consequently the calorie burns are way lower. I did read something about them making adjustments for more accurate numbers with the algorithms. Not sure what that meant.

Valerie, I take my water soluble supplements like my B 12 methyl folate on an empty stomach in the mornings and then have the fat soluble with oatmeal later. I only take 1 lower dose D a day. I have read that about some vitamins being built up in the system because it cannot use all of it. I generally take note that if I went outside and did yard work in the sun, I do not need a dose of D. It does not take much time outside to get what we need. I do not use calcium that often. Too many conflicting things on it. I used to because my doctor recommended it. For awhile I was taking Rainbow light magnesium plus that was mainly magnesium with some plant based ingredients and it did have some calcium in it.
Sorry that your sister is mad.

Good morning,

Today I did Live PHAT 2, 48 minutes, 296 calories. The audio cut out at the 25 minute mark, had to finish the workout with no sound. I wrote it up on the LIVE forum, but they said they had no issue with it.

It was a bad week last week. Kylee had some urinating issues in class on Tuesday. She just kept urinating, no control at all. I took her to the vet Wednesday morning, they did blood work and tested her urine. Long story short, all her numbers for gall bladder, etc were way high again, also protein in her urine. I was in class on Thursday when they called and said they wanted to do an x-ray of her gall bladder, stomach, liver, kidneys and found something in her stomach lining that looked like either a metal or plastic piece. They kept her overnight on fluids and some meds to coat the stomach lining. Luckily it moved the piece, which was no longer there on Friday morning. Needless to say, it was a worrisome week. All this came about, and still no reason found for the urinating. Will be going for a re-check this afternoon, and to pick up some new meds to address the urinating problem.

Judy, great that you subscribed to Live etc again. Do you use the On Demand feature much? I have almost all her DVD's and thought that was mostly for doing your own workouts with the Workout Manager etc. I looked through all the Live workouts and wrote down all the PHA ones to do. My plan is to do 2 of those a week, along with some cardio days.

Diane Sue, I feel for you with the appointments etc. John and I were just commenting on after 60, it seems like all we do is go for DR appointments, or talk about DR appointments with friends. :) I am not a fan of tofu either. Will need to go look at the KCM new DVD's. She doesn't have a website any longer correct? Where do you see them? My uncle had that surgery for droopy eye lids and was really happy that he did. I also read that about glucosamine and stopped taking it. For me, it is more the weight.

Valerie, spring? I am so envious of you. :) That is sad about the dog that your sister got. You think she would have learned something the first time it got out. I think you calling Amazon was a good thing to do. I read that calcium and vitamin D should be taken with vitamin K2. Since K2 has some clotting issues, I do not take it any longer, since I already have a clotting syndrome. Interesting that you are not feeling full with the WW plan you are on.

Carolyn, great job on Pyramid Pump! Are you doing Cathe's February rotation? You are do good at the WW program! I have yet to sign up. :(

Take care,
