Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/26

Happy New Year! I’m taking a rest day today. Does anyone else cook/eat certain foods for New Year’s Day, or is that mostly a southern thing? We always have black-eyed peas, greens and pork roast. The peas are for good luck in the new year and the greens are for money. As I listened to a food historian discuss these traditions this morning I started to wonder about other people’s family traditions.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Happy New Year to everyone!

it was loud for a whole last night but I slept OK. it was only about 15 degrees ( plus covid) so the festivities with brief.
no special traditions here. dont eat pork. tried black eyed peas/greens. know it's for "good luck" but I wasn't crazy about them. just Ok. I like greens ...collards, mustard greens, kale. DH is not so positive though.
In Wisconsin... new years parties served raw beef and onions for NYE. and egg nog made with raw egg. I tried it the beef once. that was enough for life. Yuck. ground sirloin with chopped raw onions, salt, pepper, on cocktail rye bread slices. not sure if the tradition continued because potentially a huge infection source, e. coli etc. as is the egg nog.
my family would often make a dinner something like standing rib roast or ham. I didn't continue it.
DH and I made whatever we liked at the moment. tried for something special that took a little prep. I might make shrimp creole tonight but getting push back from DH. I'm more adventurous than he is.

this is a pic of a red breasted sapsucker in case you've never seen one. they are beautiful.

Black-eyed peas are my least favorite and I only cook them for new year’s. Greens are a different matter—I love all of them. I cook collards, kale, Swiss chard, turnips, and mustards.
