Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/20

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Chiseled Upper Body with core 1 (52:48). I liked it because there were a lot of new moves. Still don't like the side-leaning windmills and hate the bear crawls--too hard on my knees.

Lori, that is such a beautiful gift! I'm sure your DH will give it a prominent place in your home. I love Helen Mirren, too, but you won't like her role as Hedda Hopper. What a witch/bitch--just plain crazy to make sure Hollywood is commie free. There is some newsreel footage too, and some of it includes Reagan as a cold warrior. John Wayne wasn't all that savory either. Trumbo served during WWII, but Wayne did not--never left Hollywood, but turned into another crusader for the black list.

Deb, as you can see, I did get my dvds yesterday. I thought I would get them Saturday, but for some reason they went to Springfield first.

I think I will preview Low impact sweat for tomorrow.

Hi everyone--

Exactly how I felt about this one today. I really like the chest moves on the floor doing the core move at the same time, but HATE the windmills and the bear crawls. I cannot keep my one arm up holding the weight on the windmills, so did it with only the one weight that goes down your leg.

back from therapy they worked me hard. will leave legs alone the rest of today. upper body later today. in therapy I am doing some moves I saw on the links you posted Judy, and also several moves cathe uses in LBB and elsewhere. fire walker kinds of things, bridges with a band. walking with a band around ankles. trying to stretch out my IT band. My knee is is not cooperating much. . so if it hurts, I don't do it. squats are off the table for now. I think I can go down stairs a little better. just hoping.
so as planned, I did ch, back, sh, x-train. plus core 1. I expect to be pretty sore tomorrow a lot of firewalker kinds of moves. a lot!!

I especially like movies and documentaries about the parts of history I missed because I was a kid or wasn't paying attention. things that weren't in history books yet, and that you may have lived through time wise , but were totally unaware. If your family wasn't politically involved, you missed a lot. they voted but that was about it.

Good morning & Merry Christmas Eve Eve...:)

I woke up at 3:00 for some reason, could not get back to sleep. Up at 3:40....I guess a nap in on the schedule for today.

Lori, I am planning on Lower Chiseled tomorrow or Friday...any of those moves we don't like? Wall Squats with the ball? Low Ends? LOL....:).... As for a rotation, I think I will do the easiest one first, like HIIT...I like how she has them progressively harder. The E-workbook is such a great idea.

Valerie, good for you for holding out on starting the new workouts...smart to concentrate on your PT stuff right now.

Lynda, glad your DVD's came....and I saw that we had similar feelings about the Chiseled Upper Body one. I have not viewed any of the Blasts or Muscle Melt Downs yet. I want to do each workout, on it's own...except for the Sweat ones...they are kind of short unless you do both together... I didn't like the Discus throw move....

Judy, how is your hip flexor? any better today?

Josie, what are you up to?

The exercise bike is being delivered today....and I will be gone with my cousin getting a mani/pedi. Our gifts to ourselves. LOL.

Take care,

Good morning ladies!

Yesterday I did both of the low impact sweat. I was thinking they are short so makes sense to do them both. Well I was really surprised how intense the second half was. The first workout I thougt was great but the second really made me a sweaty mess. Loved it. I did go a little heavier with weights throughout both workouts and may have jumped instead of keeping low impact in some areas. I just could not help myself to jump with certain exercises! Regardless of my modifications I thought this workout was easily upper intermediate.

Deb...the step portion is used for the entire workout. Which are drills throughout. I used the same amout of risers as cathe and was fine. When doing a choreographed step workout I usually use one riser. Being only 5'2 with 2 left feet I always felt 1 riser was plenty for me. The lower chisel has no ball wall squats!!! This workout is like cardio leg blast but no step and has plenty of rest inbetween sets. When I did it I needed to shorten the rest a bit and that was better for me and I think I increased the weights used too. Ugh is right up that early.

Lynda...lol! About Helen. Witch or not I will still love her. :). Today I am going to try out Upper Chiseled to give my legs a rest. I am with you with the bear crawls. Hater here too!

Valerie...yes good you are getting through PT before trying the ICE. Keeping with upper body workouts make sense. I love using fire walker loops and all the exercises along with them. I feel they get you deep.

This week I have been redoing our kitchen cabinets. They were painted and although they looked very nice I was bored with the color and wanted to go with a cream color. They were a country green before and have been this way since we moved in almost 16 years ago. I am using the Rustoleum Cabinet Restoration kit and so far I am pleased.

Hi to Josie and Judy!

Did a shorter premix of Rock;m Sock'm....one where 5 things are removed....it was 35 minutes. My HRM must be on the blink....I think the strap is too loose and it loses the connection to the watch....I will be sewing it to make it shorter.

As for the workout, I liked it, not too hard as is, and you can make it more difficult by using gloves with weights.

My pet peeve of course is the "modifier" She only modified 2 of the moves, I think...she was jumping all over with the rest of them. I will shut up about this now....not sure why but it just irks me...

Hi Everyone,

I think I strained a hip flexor doing To The Mat. Yesterday I did my yoga tune-up dvd and did a lot of stretching. It feels better today but still sore. It wasn't a problem with the workout, I just didn't warm up enough and I probably should have stopped a couple of times instead of trying to do all of it the first time through. I have to admit, I am getting frustrated with my lower body injury issues but I am also starting to think that years of doing "quad dominant" exercises (spinervals and biking in general) is the problem. I think one of my goals for 2016 will be to work on glute activation and spend more time on strength training and Cathe cardio workouts and less time on quad dominant workouts.

My ICE dvds arrived yesterday. I like the rotations in the manual. I think I might start with the "All ICE Rotation" Level 2 in January. That has one rest day a week and if I don't feel challenged enough I can add in some other workouts or the blizzard blasts.

Tomorrow we are driving to Indiana for Christmas. We'll drop the kitties off for boarding :( and pick them up on Saturday when we return.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did low impact sweat (46:13). I thought the first routine was a lot easier than the RWH low impact hiits. I only used one riser on the second and this one was a bit more challenging. Basically, no dread factor on this routine as a whole. I will probably enjoy doing this one a lot.

Judy, it sounds like you have a good plan for the new year. I haven't really looked at the rotations yet. I'm just experimenting. I don't really know why, but my outside hip flexors were sore after the chiseled upper body with core 1 yesterday. I guess it was all of the leg stuff in both. I don't really care for bicycles. Have a great Christmas and safe travels tomorrow!

Lori, you probably need to do all of the blasts and add impact and heavier weights to make these workouts challenging for you. I, on the other hand am enjoying the prospect of something on the light side. I just don't think my body recovers as quickly as it used to from working out. Helen Mirren does vindictive with panache--she's just so versatile as an actress. DH wants to go to The Force Awakens on Christmas Day, and since he doesn't often want to see a film, I think we will be going.

Deb, on the side leaning windmills, I have no trouble on the left side, but difficulty getting down there on the right. Must be some kind of imbalance in my body to work on. I cheat on bear crawls because of my knees.

Valerie, I agree with Deb--you should wait until you feel on the mend with PT before doing these new workouts.

News flash ... 60 minutes of fire walkers (and variations) and bridges with a band around knees WILL make you sore. not as bad as I expected. both sides are equally sore. somehow, I have been letting my left leg do a little more than the right. I got all moves in workouts done over years. when I watch in a mirror, it's pretty amazing the minor form infractions I do to take pressure off the right. he does a deep tissue massage on the IT band that about kills me. He had me tense my VMO ( vastus medialis oblique) and hold it, releasing gradually. it fires well but he agrees very hard to isolate it. loads of stretching. so my assignment is to repeat yesterday. I will do some regular cardio, like treadmill and elliptical. there is no way to favor one side with those machines. Glad to hear the new workouts look good. the weather here is absolutely awful. rain and more rain, tons of snow in the mountains. totally different than last year. terrible driving conditions for those who need to travel. passes closed half the time for avalanche control. we are getting some snow right now, nothing that will accumulate.

I am convinced riding has a part in this. Judy, yes "quad dominant" movement. the problem area is most obvious middle part of the squat move. lots of clicking and snapping and discomfort. that is where the patella mal-alignment is most obvious. I am looking at everything, even how I sit at my desk chair. this is an issue that has developed over years. I had trouble with warrior position in yoga on this side as well. I thought I was mixing things up enough, and although I knew I was letting the right side off easy when hiking, I thought the other things balanced it out. there is also a chance thi is just a structural issue and there's no particular cause. I've got other joint problems.
Drive carefully, people get distracted and it will be busy on the roads everywhere.
I can't remember who is trying sitting on a ball at their desk..Deb, is it you? How is that working out? Remember the "no dread factor" when john starts using it. you want him to enjoy this so he'll do it regularly. I know what you mean about DVD errors...on Pedal Power cathe specifically stays, (and shows) not to swing shoulder area side to side while riding, and the lady in the front row to her right is doing exactly that, and continues to do it. It annoys me... she should have corrected her . it's right at the beginning so I almost think they should have restarted. Every time I see it I wonder why they let it slide.

Lynda that would be a brave move The Force this weekend. We will go but after the crowds settle down a little. Helen Mirren is a favorite of mine too. Love Judy Densch too. British movies and series seem to be better vehicles for "mature" women than the US market.
Someone mentioned Last Tango in Halifax..started watching it yesterday. DH is not thrilled but I think I'll like it. also started a series called Bloodline. looks decent, lots of well known people, based in florida. hopeful.... people look like it IS florida with the humidity making a mess of hairdos.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Tonight I did ICE Muscle Meltdown-Triceps and Icy Core 1. I really like ICE so far. I'm looking forward to starting the rotation.

Valerie-that sounds like an intense pt session! I may end up back in pt too. At least now I feel like I know what the problem is. Last year I really didn't understand the connection. All of the biking I was trying to do was probably undermining the pt I was doing at the time.

Lynda-I don't think I recover as well as I used to either.

Deb-my hip flexor feels a little better. I'll be staying away from lower body work for a few more days so that should help too.

Hi to Lori & Josie!

I hope to check in while we are in Indiana but in case I can't, I hope you all have a wonderful and safe Christmas!

Judy

I was playing with Imikimi tonight and made a couple of Christmas cards

Merry Christmas Eve!

We made the meat balls for the Chili Con Queso appetizer we will be bringing, guacamole and the actual queso dip will be made today. John's bike was delivered yesterday, it's really nice. I can use it with any Cardio Coach workout, and probably a spin one...I think I will try to find a short one on YouTube to test that out and see if I like it.

Lori, that sounds like a big project! Are you repainting the cabinets or taking the paint off to get back to wood? The cabinets in our kitchen that were here when we bought the house were painted, and I think I painted them 2 or 3 times over the years before we had the kitchen remodeled. It's a tough job, but makes a big difference once it's done.

Judy, love the cards! I need to go over and see that site. Have a safe trip and a wonderful holiday!

Lynda, I agree, I like these for the lower intensity. I think I will eliminate the weight in the arm that goes up in that windmill exercise. At least until I can get the motion down right.

Valerie, yes, that was me sitting on the stability ball at my computer desk. I like it, because it helps me stop slouching. Not sure yet if it is helping my core, but I do find myself holding it in to keep the ball steady when I type. :). Have not found an error in the DVD...like the one you mentioned...that would bug me too! Just the "reluctance" of Amanda to do any modifications.

Hi to Josie,

A workout, then the dogs need grooming and baths. Yippee!

Take care,

I'm looking at everything that could affect my knee. when I sit at my desk, I cross my ankles under the chair, left over right. trying not to. I couldn't do that sitting on a ball. my ball might be too high for me to sit on and still type. will test.
I did 20 treadmill, 20 elliptical, therapy exercises, stretches yesterday. a little more than an hour. I have some sore spots but not as bad as I anticipated. since I am so unhappy doing squats, I'm thinking of adding in some step ups on right. seems like similar muscle activation as squats, not exact but close.

Judy those cards are adorable! do you have a foam roller? do you find it useful?

Deb, I got the same impression on Pedal Power. lady doing exactly what cathe was telling everyone NOT to do. I noticed it the first time I did the DVD. seems more obvious every time.
make sure you know how to adjust the bike. I mark the spots with a sharpie so it's easy to go back and forth. DH and I like it set differently. Ours came with toe baskets. we tossed the leather strap. just got in the way. I clean off the marked settings, change as needed. I don't like to get going, find it's set wrong, have to stop and reset.

this is just hilarious

Hi everyone and Merry Christmas Eve!

This morning I did the Metabolic Total Body (47:53). Another one I like with minimum dread. Only a couple times I felt like my heart rate was getting a little too high and no problem matching Cathe's weights.

Deb, I just previewed the kickbox Rock'm Sock'm and I see what you mean about Amanda. I will modify the countless jacks which I think are especially tough on the knees. KCM's modifier for jacks does half-jacks. I agree it's irksome. I still think I will like this one. The bike sounds great and it will get double duty if you use it as well.

Judy, those cards are great. The weather looks relatively calm where you are so you shouldn't have any trouble today. I have been listening to the awful airport delays. I cannot imagine flying anywhere at this time of year anymore.

Valerie, your weather sounds pretty repetitious--just a lot of rain. At least this may help with the drought in California if it's snowing in the mountains and they will get the melt later in the year. I thought of you yesterday when I was driving to the Honda dealer to get a recall done on our old car--that awful airbag problem on the older cars. There was a fascinating podcast from Radiolab on what happened to the dinosaurs when that asteroid hit. It was fascinating and it was new information about raining glass particles so hot they made the blood boil in any creature. It turns out Radiolab has several seasons of scientific podcasts. This one was season 12, episode 3. I am also listening to the new Serial podcasts on Bo Bergdahl, also fascinating.

We always go out with a couple on Christmas Eve for dinner, so we will be going to the Thai Garden. I will miss my sons, but we will still enjoy our small company.

Lori, that does sound like a major project. What will be your new color?

Valerie, there is a column today by Gail Collins on Trump that is also pretty funny. Reminds me of the general in Dr. Strangelove who was obsessed with "precious bodily fluids." Trump must never have had a mother who spanked him for having a potty-mouth.

I have time, looks like we're not doing much this year. thought we'd do something with cousin, but haven't heard back yet.

Lynda the rain does get tedious. I enjoy not dealing with snow most years, unless we want to by driving up higher. for variety, this morning it's snowing here. not supposed to stick at our elevation. the drought is officially over in WA. I know CA has gotten some rain and snow in the mountains but they need a lot more. we had a very wet December, and there is a load of snow in the mountains. El nino conditions, if they act as predicted, supposed to arrive January. so we will see.

Off to read the Gail collins column.

Good evening ladies!

I did not workout yesterday. Got an early start on the cabinets and things were just flowing nicely. The top cabinates are all done and I just put them all together last night. Started the bottoms yesterday too. I just need to layer on the protective top coat and they will be done too. Unfortunately, I am going to halt this project. We noticed last night Chester's ear is filling up again. He has an appt at 2pm today. We are a little pissed with this too. The vet gave us two options...we could could just have his ear lanced for $150 but only 50/50 chance it would solve the problem or we could do the surgery and solve the issue. Cost of this was about $1,000. Now it is back again so the surgery did nothing. My DH is off today so he is taking Chester to the vet. Let me tell you he will not be nice about this. Meanwhile, poor Chester is uncomfortable and if he has to have a cone there goes all my freshly painted cabinets!!!!! So that is why I am not putting the doors and finishing them up.

This morning I did do the low impact sweat 1 with the muscle meltdown biceps. Good quick workout.

Judy...glad your hip flexors are better. Have a fun time in Indiana!

Lynda...We are going with plain cream. Want to brighten up the kitchen. In a couple of weeks we are going to paint the kitchen and wallpaper one wall for accent. We will have more options with cream cabinets. It will look really nice when done. I hear you with the jumping jacks. I do them but wow there are a lot in this workout. I would prefer a different move.

Deb...yes repainting them. Love this restoring kit. I had used in in my bathroom a couple years ago and it really has held up well. So figured I'd use it in the kitchen. We also bought a new kitchen faucet. I am going to try and install on my own. This may be quite comical! Your dip sounds yummy!

Valerie...still amazes me that you can workout like you do! Good that you are taking notice with everything you do. There has got to be something that is causing this issue. I will look at that link when I finish here. I can use a good laugh!

Going to my son's GF's parent's home tonight. (That's a mouthful!) We get a long really well with them so this will be fun.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Valerie-I have a foam roller and some massage therapy balls. The foam roller is good for larger muscles and the IT band. The balls are good for smaller muscles and deeper tissue work.
